Abstract
Three ethylmalonate-containing non-centrosymmetric copper(ii) coordination polymers with magnetic properties ranging from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetic ordering are synthetized under nearly identical conditions.

Abstract
Five manganese(II) complexes of formulas [Mn(2)(Etmal)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(L)](n) (1-4) and {[Mn(Etmal)(2)(H(2)O)][Mn(H(2)O)(4)]}(n) (5) with H(2)Etmal = ethylmalonic acid (1-5) and L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) (1), 4,4'-azobispyridine (azpy) (2), 4,4'-bipyridyl (4,4'-bpy) (3), and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) (4) were synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Their thermal behavior and variable-temperature magnetic properties were also investigated. The structure of the compounds 1-4 consists of corrugated layers of aquamanganese(II) units with intralayer carboxylate-ethylmalonate bridges in the anti-syn (equatorial-equatorial) coordination mode which are linked through bis-monodentate bpa (1), azpy (2), 4,4'-bpy (3), and bpe (4) ligands to build up a three-dimensional (3D) framework. The structure of compound 5 is made up by zigzag chains of manganese(II) ions with a regular alternation of [Mn(H(2)O)(4)](2+) and chiral (either Δ or λ enantiomeric forms) [Mn(Etmal)(2)(H(2)O)](2-) units within each chain. In contrast to the bidentate/bis-monodentate coordination mode of the Etmal ligand in 1-4, it adopts the bidentate/monodentate coordination mode in 5 with the bridging carboxylate-ethylmalonate also exhibiting the anti-syn conformation but connecting one equatorial and an axial position from adjacent metal centers. The manganese-manganese separation through the carboxylate-ethylmalonate bridge in 1-5 vary in the range 5.3167(4)-5.5336(7) Å. These values are much shorter than those across the extended bis-monodentate N-donors in 1-4 with longest/shortest values of 11.682(3) (3)/13.9745(9) Å (4). Compounds 1-5 exhibit an overall antiferromagnetic behavior, where the exchange pathway is provided by the carboxylate-ethylmalonate bridge. Monte Carlo simulations based on the classical spin approach (1-5) were used to successfully reproduce the magnetic data of 1-5.

Abstract
The 2,4,6-triethylbenzene-capped hexaamine macrobicycle with pyridyl spacers (pyr) was able to coordinate three copper(II) ions within its cavity. Potentiometric studies performed at 298.2 K in MeOH/H(2)O (50:50 v/v) and at ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO(3) revealed that trinuclear species predominate in solution from pH 5.0, the hydroxo complexes being the main species, which start forming at unusual very low pH values. The single-crystal X-ray determination of the trinuclear complex showed that the three copper centres have square-planar geometry, arranged in an almost equilateral triangle, and have carbonate bridging the three metal centres. The presence of carbonate resulted from fixation of atmospheric CO(2). The present study represents the first μ(3)-CO(3)-bridged trinuclear copper(II) complex located in the interior of a macrobicyclic cavity. The magnetic data of [Cu(3)(pyr)(μ(3)-CO(3))]·(ClO(4))(4) showed ferromagnetic intramolecular interactions [J=3.80 cm(-1), based on the Hamiltonian H=-J(S(1)S(2)+S(2)S(3)+S(1)S(3))] yielding a spin quartet, S=3/2, ground state. Density functional calculations on the experimental geometry of the trinuclear complex showed that the ferromagnetic nature of the magnetic coupling can be attributed to the syn-anti conformation of the carbonato bridge, and a magneto-structural correlation, based on the different conformations (syn-anti, syn-syn and anti-anti), is presented. The interesting properties observed, namely the lowering of the pK(a) of coordinated water molecules to unusual values and the good fit of the carbonate anion between the copper centres, derive from the special architecture of pyr.

Abstract
The first coordination compounds of 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylate anion (butca4-) of the formula [M2(butca)(H2O)5]n.2nH2O [M=Mn(II) (1), Co(II) (2), and Ni(II) (3)] were prepared and their X-ray crystal structures and magnetic properties investigated. The three complexes have a very similar two-dimensional structure which consists of (4,4) networks, 1 and 2 being isostructural. The tetracarboxylate ligand acts as a 4-fold connector leading to two-dimensional (4,4) networks of metal atoms, this topology being possible because of its planar conformation. The nodes of these networks are formed by dinuclear motifs which exhibit the unusual (mu-aqua)bis(mu-carboxylate) bridging unit which is analogous to that observed in some molecules of biological interest. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1-3 show that 1 and 2 are antiferromagnetically coupled systems whereas 3 exhibits a ferromagnetic behavior. The analysis of the magnetic data of 1-3 through a simple dinuclear model allowed the determination of the values of the magnetic coupling (J) -3.6 (1), -1.2 (2), and +1.47 cm(-1) (3) with the Hamiltonian being defined as H=-JSA.SB. The countercomplementarity between the two bridges (aqua and syn-syn carboxylate) accounts for the trend exhibited by the values of the magnetic coupling in this family.

Abstract
A three-dimensional homometallic complex [Co(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(btec)(2)(bpp)](n) is built from the mixed hydroxide/carboxylate bridged cobalt(ii) chains linked by the 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate (btec(4-)) anion and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)-propane molecule (bpp). Within each chain, two mu(3)-OH-bridged metal triangles connect to each other by sharing a common vertex to give rise to a bow-tie type Co(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2) subunit, which is joined to adjacent subunits by four mu(1,1)-carboxylate bridges to form a step-like metal-oxygen backbone. The magnetic studies revealed that the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferrimagnetic interactions resulted in a ferrimagnetic-like behavior of the homometallic chains. Below a critical temperature (T(N) = 12.5 K), bulk antiferromagnetic ordering was observed at low field due to the weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions. A metamagnetic transition occurred at a magnetic field of ca. 5 kOe at 2 K.

Abstract
Two manganese(III) azide complexes capped with tetradentate Schiff bases were characterized structurally and magnetically. The replacement of halogens on the Schiff bases leads to a drastic structural alteration from a dimer (1) bridged by phenoxide to a one-dimensional chain (2) linked by azide in a single end-to-end mode. Notably, magnetic studies of 2 show the concomitant existence of spin canting and metamagnetism.
