Abstract
A simple catalytic synthesis of luminescent pyrimidines from benzamidines and alcohols is reported. These one-pot, acceptor-less dehydrogenative coupling reactions are catalyzed by a ruthenium hydrido chloride complex (1), supported by a chelating P^N ligand (L1) bearing a benzannulated phenanthridine donor arm. The pyrimidines thus produced are emissive in solution, with photoluminescence quantum yields reaching 72%. Details of the catalytic synthesis and characterization of the pyrimidines in both solution and the solid state are reported, along with computational modeling of the emissive excited states of representative examples.

Abstract
Two new functionalized 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines that were end-capped with cyanoacrylic acid or cyanoacrylic acid ester anchoring groups, which might allow their efficient functionalization on TiO2 or other metal-oxide semiconductor surfaces, have been synthesized and characterized by electrochemical, photophysical, and spectroscopic measurements. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of these 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines with extended π systems, in particular their LUMO energies, make them promising candidates to build up inorganic-organic hybrid photosensitizers for the sensitization of metal-oxide semiconductors (e.g., TiO2 nanoparticles and/or nanotubes).

A self-assembled dense monolayer based on a non-charged push–pull chromophore is clearly evidenced by electrochemical, XPS and STM analysis. Associated with good film properties a conducting behavior consistent with the structure of the SAM-organized push–pull is also shown.
