Abstract
Two heterometallic Cu(ii)–Cd(ii) polymers (1 and 2) with a 2D layer or 1D chain structure were obtained and their magneto-structural correlations were discussed, and 1 displayed antiferromagnetic ordering at lower temperature.

Abstract
The reactions of ligand N'-[(pyridin-2-yl)methylene]pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide (ppcd) with different copper salts (1, acetate; 2, perchlorate; 3, sulfate) in MeOH could afford one acetate-bridge tetranuclear discrete [Cu2(ppcd)(ac)2(H2O)(OH)]2·H2O (1), one-dimensional (1D) chiral chain [Cu(ppcd)]ClO4 (2), and a 1D-decker complex of a trinuclear copper(II) subunit, Cu3(ppcd)2(H2O)4(SO4)2 (3). Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that conformation isomerism of the ppcd ligand was associated with the configuration of -N-N- (trans or cis) and could induce the versatile coordination mode in the presence of different anions. The 1D chiral chain was interestingly obtained from the achiral rigid ligand in complex 2. Magnetic studies indicated that the magnitude of the antiferromagnetic coupling can be tuned because of the configuration isomerism [compound 1 is practically diamagnetic at room temperature (J ≈ -1000 cm(-1)), with a strong antiferromagnetic one (J = -255.4 cm(-1)) for 2 in the 1D uniform chain and an antiferromagnetic one (J = -123.6 cm(-1)) for 3 within the trinuclear copper subunit].

Abstract
Three Co(II)-malonate complexes, namely, (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Co(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(2) (1), (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Co(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (2), and (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Co(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](PF(6))(2) (3) [C(5)H(7)N(2) = protonated 2-aminopyridine, C(3)H(4)O(4) = malonic acid, NO(3)(-) = nitrate, ClO(4)(-) = perchlorate, PF(6)(-) = hexafluorophosphate], have been synthesized from purely aqueous media, and their crystal structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. A thorough analysis of Hirshfeld surfaces and fingerprint plots facilitates a comparison of intermolecular interactions in 1-3, which are crucial in building supramolecular architectures. When these complexes are structurally compared with their previously reported analogous Ni(II) or Mg(II) compounds, a very interesting feature regarding the role of counteranions has emerged. This phenomenon can be best described as anion-induced formation of extended supramolecular networks of the type lone pair-π/π-π/π-anion-π/π-lone pair and lone pair-π/π-π/π-anion involving various weak forces like lone pair-π, π-π, and anion-π interactions. The strength of these π contacts has been estimated using DFT calculations (M06/6-31+G*), and the formation energy of the supramolecular networks has been also evaluated. The influence of the anion (NO(3)(-), ClO(4)(-), and PF(6)(-)) on the total interaction energy of the assembly is also studied.

Abstract
Five manganese(II) complexes of formulas [Mn(2)(Etmal)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(L)](n) (1-4) and {[Mn(Etmal)(2)(H(2)O)][Mn(H(2)O)(4)]}(n) (5) with H(2)Etmal = ethylmalonic acid (1-5) and L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) (1), 4,4'-azobispyridine (azpy) (2), 4,4'-bipyridyl (4,4'-bpy) (3), and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) (4) were synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Their thermal behavior and variable-temperature magnetic properties were also investigated. The structure of the compounds 1-4 consists of corrugated layers of aquamanganese(II) units with intralayer carboxylate-ethylmalonate bridges in the anti-syn (equatorial-equatorial) coordination mode which are linked through bis-monodentate bpa (1), azpy (2), 4,4'-bpy (3), and bpe (4) ligands to build up a three-dimensional (3D) framework. The structure of compound 5 is made up by zigzag chains of manganese(II) ions with a regular alternation of [Mn(H(2)O)(4)](2+) and chiral (either Δ or λ enantiomeric forms) [Mn(Etmal)(2)(H(2)O)](2-) units within each chain. In contrast to the bidentate/bis-monodentate coordination mode of the Etmal ligand in 1-4, it adopts the bidentate/monodentate coordination mode in 5 with the bridging carboxylate-ethylmalonate also exhibiting the anti-syn conformation but connecting one equatorial and an axial position from adjacent metal centers. The manganese-manganese separation through the carboxylate-ethylmalonate bridge in 1-5 vary in the range 5.3167(4)-5.5336(7) Å. These values are much shorter than those across the extended bis-monodentate N-donors in 1-4 with longest/shortest values of 11.682(3) (3)/13.9745(9) Å (4). Compounds 1-5 exhibit an overall antiferromagnetic behavior, where the exchange pathway is provided by the carboxylate-ethylmalonate bridge. Monte Carlo simulations based on the classical spin approach (1-5) were used to successfully reproduce the magnetic data of 1-5.

Abstract
In the title complex, [Cu(C(8)H(3)NO(6))(H(2)O)(2)](n), the two carboxyl-ate groups of the 4-nitro-phthalate dianion ligands have monodentate and 1,3-bridging bonding modes, respectively. The Cu atom shows an approximate square-pyramidal coordination as it is bonded to O atoms from the carboxyl-ate groups of three 4-nitro-phthalate ligands and two O atoms of the non-equivalent coordinated water mol-ecules. Other Cu atoms in the coordination polymer are connected into a two-dimensional layer in the ab plane. The layers are aggregated to a three-dimensional structure through inter-layer hydrogen bonding involving an O atom of a nitro group. The whole three-dimensional structure is further maintained and stabilized by intra-layer hydrogen bonds between the O atoms of the carboxyl-ate groups and the coordinated water mol-ecules.

Abstract
Two Mg(II) malonate complexes with protonated 2-aminopyridine and protonated 2-amino-4-picoline as counterions, namely, (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Mg(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (1) and (C(6)H(8)N(2)H)(2)[Mg(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)] x 4 H(2)O (2) [C(5)H(7)N(2) = protonated 2-aminopyridine, C(3)H(4)O(4) = malonic acid, C(6)H(8)N(2)H = protonated 2-amino-4-picoline], have been synthesized from purely aqueous media, and their crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The role of lone pair...pi interactions in stabilizing the self-assembly process appears to be of great importance in both complexes. Additional weak forces like anion...pi and noncovalent O...O interactions are also found to be operating in 1. A rare combination of lone pair...pi and anion...pi interactions in 1, of the type lone pair...pi/pi...pi/pi...anion...pi/pi...lone pair, is observed, and this unusual supramolecular network is fully described here. An attempt to prepare an analogous complex with 2-amino-4-picoline resulted in 2, which is isomorphous with our recently reported transition-metal complexes of the type (C(6)H(8)N(2)H)(2)[M(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)] x 4 H(2)O (M = Ni/Co/Mn). A high-level DFT-D study (RI-B97-D/TZVP) has been used to characterize the different noncovalent interactions present in the solid state. We have also analyzed some crystal fragments to examine energetically some important assemblies that drive the crystal packing. Finally, we have studied the influence of magnesium on some hydrogen-bonding interactions.
