Abstract
Depositing platinum (Pt) interconnectors during the sample preparation process via a focused ion beam (FIB) system is an inescapable procedure for in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations. To achieve good electrical contact and avoid irreversible damage in practical samples, the microscopic evolution mechanism of FIB-deposited Pt interconnectors need a more comprehensive understanding, though it is known that its resistivity could be affected by thermal annealing. In this work, an electron-beam FIB-deposited Pt interconnector was studied by advanced spherical aberration (Cs)-corrected TEM combined with an in situ heating and biasing system to clarify the relationship of microscopic evolution to resistivity variation. During the heating process, the Pt interconnector underwent crystallization, organic matter decomposition, Pt nanocrystal growth, grain connection, and conductive path formation, which are combined actions to cause several orders of magnitude of resistivity reduction. The comprehensive understanding of the microscopic evolution of FIB-deposited Pt material is beneficial, not only for optimizing the resistance performance of Pt as an interconnector, but also for understanding the role of C impurities with metal materials. For the purpose of wiring, annealed electron-beam (EB)-deposited Pt material can be recommended for use as an interconnector in devices for research purposes.

Abstract
Electrocatalyst supports, in particular carbonaceous materials, play critical roles in the electrocatalytic activity and stability of precious metal group (PMG)-based catalysts such as Pt, Pd, and Au for the electrochemical alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) of fuels such as methanol and ethanol in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Carbonaceous supports such as high surface area carbon provide electronic contact throughout the catalyst layer, isolate PMG nanoparticles (NPs) to maintain high electrochemical surface area, and provide hydrophobic properties to avoid flooding of the catalyst layer by liquid water produced. Compared to high surface area carbon, PMG catalysts supported on 1D and 2D carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes show enhanced activity and durability due to the intrinsic effect of the underlying carbonaceous supports on the electronic states of PMG NPs. The modification of the electronic environment, in particular the d-band centers of PMG NPs, weakens the adsorption of AOR intermediates, facilitates breaking of the C-C bonds, and thus enhances the electrocatalytic activity of PMG catalysts. The doping of heteroatoms further facilitates the electrocatalytic activity for the AOR through the structural, bifunctional, and electronic effects, in addition to the enhanced dispersion of PMG NPs in the carbon support. The prospects for the development of effective PMG-based catalysts for high-performance alcohol-fuel-based PEMFCs is discussed.

Electrochemical Behavior of Pt–Ru Catalysts Supported on Graphitized Ordered Mesoporous Carbons toward CO and Methanol Oxidation. SURFACES 2019. Abstract
In this work, graphitized ordered mesoporous carbons (gCMK-3) were employed as support for Pt and Pt–Ru nanoparticles synthesized by different reduction methods. The catalysts displayed metal contents and Pt:Ru atomic ratios close to 20 wt % and 1:1, respectively. A comparison of the physical parameters of Pt and Pt–Ru catalysts demonstrated that Ru enters into the Pt crystal structure, with well-dispersed nanoparticles on the carbon support. The Pt catalysts exhibited similar surface oxide composition, whereas a variable content of surface Pt and Ru oxides was found for the Pt–Ru catalysts. As expected, the Pt–Ru catalysts showed low CO oxidation onset and peak potentials, which were attributed to the high relative abundances of both metallic Pt and Ru oxides. All the studied catalysts exhibited higher maximum current densities than those observed for the commercial Pt and Pt–Ru catalysts, although the current–time curves at 0.6 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) demonstrated a slightly higher stationary current density in the case of the Pt/C commercial catalyst compared with Pt nanoparticles supported on gCMK-3s. However, the stationary currents obtained from the Pt–Ru/gCMK-3 catalysts surpassed those of the commercial Pt–Ru material, suggesting the suitability of the prepared catalysts as anodes for these devices.

Abstract
Functionalized carbon nanotubes were used as a support for PtCo nanoparticles. Their performance as electrocatalysts for the electrooxidation of methanol was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR reflectance spectroscopy. The onset potentials for both the electrooxidation of methanol and the production of CO(2) shifted to less positive values for catalysts prepared with more oxygen groups on the support. Furthermore, the production of CO(2) was higher on catalysts prepared with functionalized carbon nanotubes. The functional groups play two different but complementary roles. On the one hand, they help to stabilize smaller PtCo particles of ca. 3 nm. On the other hand, they provide the -OH groups necessary for the total oxidation of methanol to CO(2) at potentials less positive than on nonfunctionalized supports. Remarkably, the consumption of carboxylic acid groups along with the production of water is observed in the infrared spectra of the functionalized supports recorded during the electrooxidation of methanol. This observation suggests that the -OH groups of the support can also react with methanol, forming water and an ester.
