Abstract
A series of (E)-1,2-diaryldigermenes, (Eind)ArGeGeAr(Eind) [Ar = phenyl (2), thiophen-2-yl (3), 9,9-dimethyl-2-fluorenyl (4) and 2,2'-bithiophen-5-yl (5)], supported by the fused-ring bulky 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octaethyl-s-hydrindacen-4-yl (Eind) groups, have been obtained as yellow-orange to red crystalline solids by the reaction of 1,2-dibromodigermene, (Eind)BrGeGeBr(Eind) (1), with ArLi. In the crystals of 2-5, the digermene cores show a flexible nature adopting a trans-bent geometry with the trans-bent angles (θ) between the Ge-Ge vector and the CEind-Ge-CAr plane of 34.04(12)° (2), 38.3(3)° and 38.8(3)° (3), 33.69(12)° (4) and 39.30(13)° (5). In the UV-vis spectra, strong π-π* absorptions have been observed with an absorption maximum at 451 nm (ε = 1.3 × 104) (2), 455 nm (ε = 9.7 × 103) (3), 480 nm (ε = 1.3 × 104) (4) and 497 nm (ε = 1.4 × 104) (5), retaining the GeGe double bond in solution. The absorption data and DFT calculations provide evidence for the intrinsic π-conjugation between the GeGe chromophore and aromatic rings involving the narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gaps (ΔE) with the extension of the carbon π-electron systems.

Abstract
The synthesis of P,N-phosphaalkene ligands, py-CH═PMes* (1, py = 2-pyridyl, Mes* = 2,4,6-tBu-C6H2) and the novel quin-CH═PMes* (2, quin = 2-quinolinyl) is described. The reaction with [Rh(μ-Cl)cod]2 produces Rh(I) bis(phosphaalkene) chlorido complexes 3 and 4 with distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination environments. Complexes 3 and 4 show a pronounced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) from Rh into the ligand P═C π* orbitals. Upon heating, quinoline-based complex 4 undergoes twofold C-H bond activation at the o-tBu groups of the Mes* substituents to yield the cationic bis(phosphaindane) Rh(I) complex 5, which could not be observed for the pyridine-based analogue 3. Using sub- or superstoichiometric amounts of AgOTf the C-H bond activation at an o-tBu group of one or at both Mes* was detected, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) studies suggest an oxidative proton shift pathway as an alternative to a previously reported high-barrier oxidative addition at Rh(I). The Rh(I) mono- and bis(phosphaindane) triflate complexes 6 and 7, respectively, undergo deprotonation at the benzylic CH2 group of the phosphaindane unit in the presence of KOtBu to furnish neutral, distorted square-planar Rh(I) complexes 8 and 9, respectively, with one of the P,N ligands being dearomatized. All complexes were fully characterized, including multinuclear NMR, vibrational, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, as well as single-crystal X-ray and elemental analysis.

Abstract
We report the mass-selected slow photoelectron spectra of three reactive organophosphorus species, PCH2, and the two isomers, methylenephosphine or phosphaethylene, HPCH2 and methylphosphinidine, P-CH3. All spectra were recorded by double imaging photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy (i2PEPICO) using synchrotron radiation and all species were generated in a flow reactor by the reaction of trimethyl phosphine with fluorine atoms. Adiabatic ionisation energies of 8.80 ± 0.02 eV (PCH2), 10.07 ± 0.03 eV (H-PCH2) and 8.91 ± 0.04 eV (P-CH3) were determined and the vibronic structure was simulated by calculating Franck-Condon factors from optimised structures based on quantum chemical methods. Observation of biradicalic P-CH3 isomer with its triplet ground state is surprising because it is less stable than H-PCH2.

Abstract
The catalytic metathesis of C=C bonds is a textbook reaction that has no parallel in the widely studied area of multiple bonds involving heavier p-block elements. A high-yielding P=C bond metathesis of phosphaalkenes (ArP=CPh2 , Ar=Mes, o-Tol, Ph) has been discovered that is catalyzed by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC=Me2 IMe, Me2 Ii Pr). The products are cyclic oligomers formally derived from ArP=PAr [i. e. cyclo-(ArP)n ; n=3, 4, 5, 6] and Ph2 C=CPh2 . Preliminary mechanistic studies of this remarkable transformation have established NHC=PAr (Ar=Mes, o-Tol, Ph) as key phosphinidene transfer agents. In addition, novel cyclic intermediates, such as, cyclo-(ArP)2 CPh2 and cyclo-(ArP)4 CPh2 have also been observed. This work represents a rare application of non-metal-based catalysts for transformations involving main-group elements.

Abstract
We report the phospha-bora-Wittig reaction for the direct preparation of phosphaalkenes from aldehydes, ketones, esters, or amides. The transient phosphaborene Mes*P═B-NR2 reacts with carbonyl compounds to form 1,2,3-phosphaboraoxetanes, analogues of oxaphosphetane intermediates in the classical Wittig reaction. 1,2,3-Phosphaboraoxetanes undergo thermal or Lewis acid-promoted cycloreversion, yielding phosphaalkenes. Experimental and density functional theory studies reveal far-reaching similarities between classical and phospha-bora-Wittig reactions.

Abstract
A reactivity study of a β-diketiminate titanium(iii) phosphanylphosphido complex [MeNacNacTi(Cl){η2-P(SiMe3)-PtBu2}] (1) towards ketones such as benzophenone, 9-fluorenone, acetophenone, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone is reported. The reactions of 1 with aromatic ketones (without α-protons) directly lead to the Ti(iii) complex [MeNacNacTi(μ2-Cl)(OSiMe3)] (5) and Ti(iv) complexes with the pinacol condensation product [MeNacNacTi(OSiMe3)(η2-pinacolate)] (3), and phosphanylphosphaalkenes Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (2) and (fluorenyl)C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (6), respectively. The reaction with acetophenone leads to the titanium(iii) complex with the aldol condensation product as ligand [MeNacNacTi(Cl){OC{Me(Ph)}CH2(C[double bond, length as m-dash]O)Ph}] (8) and in parallel to phosphanylphosphaalkene (Ph)MeC[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (9) and 5. The reactions of 1 with cyclic ketones (cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone) lead to Ti(iii) complexes [{(ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Me)CHC(Me)[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)((CH2)4CO)}Ti(Cl){PtBu2-P(SiMe3)((CH2)4CO)}] (10) and [{(ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Me)CHC(Me)[double bond, length as m-dash]NAr)((CH2)5CO)}Ti(Cl){PtBu2-P(SiMe3)((CH2)5CO)}] (11), which are formed via the successive insertion of two molecules of ketone to one molecule of 1. The stability investigation of complexes 10 and 11 in a polar solvent (THF) revealed that under these conditions, the complexes decompose, resulting in titanium(iii) complexes with aldol condensation products and the expected phosphanylphosphaalkenes (CH2)4C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (10a) and (CH2)5C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-PtBu2 (11a). In the reaction of 1 with cycloheptanone, only the Ti(iii) complex with the aldol condensation product [MeNacNacTi(Cl){OC(CH2)6}CH(C[double bond, length as m-dash]O)(CH2)5] (12) was isolated. The structures 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 11b and 12 were characterized by X-ray spectroscopy, while all the phosphanylphosphaalkenes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
This article presents the synthesis of a new family of naphthyl-fused phosphepines through Ni-mediated C-C coupling. Interestingly, the chlorophosphine oxide intermediate shows strong resistance toward oxidation/hydrolysis owing to a combination of steric hindrance and pnictogen interactions. However, it can undergo substitution reactions under specific conditions. The optical/redox properties and the electronic structure of these new π-systems were studied experimentally (UV/Vis absorption, emission, cyclic voltammetry) and computationally (TD-DFT calculations, NICS investigation). Taking advantage of the luminescence of these derivatives, a blue-emitting OLED has been prepared, highlighting that these novel π-conjugated P-heterocycles appear to be promising building blocks for solid-state lighting applications.

Abstract
Reactions of Ph3GePCO with KP(t-Bu)2 and Ph3SiCl, or direct reaction with Ph3SiP(t-Bu)2 provides the (Z)- and (E)-isomers of the phosphaalkene (t-Bu2)PC(OSiPh3)P(GePh3) 2, respectively. These isomers interconvert thermally and photochemically, while 2 also undergoes silyl and phosphide exchange with silylphosphines, consistent with a mechanism involving the reversible silylphosphination of Ph3GePCO.

Abstract
Muonium (Mu), an H atom analogue, is employed to probe the addition of free radicals to the P=C bond of a phosphaalkene. Specifically, two unprecedented muoniated free radicals, MesP. -CMu(Me)2 (1 a, minor product) and MesPMu-C. Me2 (1 b, major product), were detected by muon spin spectroscopy (μSR) when a solution of MesP=CMe2 (1: Mes=2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) was exposed to a beam of positive muons (μ+ ). The μ+ serves as a source of Mu (that is, Mu=μ+ +e- ). To confirm the identity of the major product 1 b, its spectral features were compared to its isotopologue, MesPH-C. (Me)CH2 Mu (2 a). Conveniently, 2 a is the sole product of the reaction of MesPH(CMe=CH2 ) (2) with Mu. For all observed radicals, muon, proton, and phosphorus hyperfine coupling constants were determined by μSR and compared to DFT-calculated values.

Abstract
1,1'-Binaphthyl-substituted diphosphene 1 possessing a P[double bond, length as m-dash]P double bond and an axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl group was synthesized and fully characterized. Diphosphene 1 was prepared as an optically active form and thus is the first example of a chiral diphosphene. The CD spectra of 1 showed apparent circular dichroism in the longer wavelength region, caused by the P[double bond, length as m-dash]P moiety.

Abstract
The ubiquitous half-sandwich iron complex [CpFe(CO)2 Me] (Cp=η5 -C5 H5 ) appears to be a catalyst for α-phosphinidene elimination from primary phosphines. Dehydrocoupling reactions provided initial insight into this unusual reaction mechanism, and trapping reactions with organic substrates gave products consistent with an α elimination mechanism, including a rare example of a three-component reaction. The substrate scope of this reaction is consistent with generation of a triplet phosphinidene. In all, this study presents catalytic phosphinidene transfer to unsaturated organic substrates.

Abstract
Sterically large substituents can provide kinetic stabilization to various types of low-coordinate compounds. For example, regarding the chemistry of the group 14 elements, since West et al. introduced the concept of kinetic protection of the otherwise highly reactive Si=Si double bond by bulky mesityl (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) groups in 1981, a number of unsaturated compounds of silicon and its group homologs have been successfully isolated by steric effects using the appropriate large substituents. However, the functions and applications of the Si-Si π-bonds consisting of the 3pπ electrons on the formally sp2-hybridized silicon atoms have rarely been explored until 10 years ago, when Scheschkewitz and Tamao independently reported the model systems of the oligo(p-phenylenedisilenylene)s (Si-OPVs) in 2007. This review focuses on the recent advances in the chemistry of π-electron systems containing Si=Si double bonds, mainly published in the last decade. The synthesis, characterization, and potential application of a variety of donor-free π-conjugated disilene compounds are described.

Abstract
Oligomeric phosphaalkenes are readily characterized using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The high affinity of phosphines for silver ions permits the detection of the unadulterated polymer as [M + xAg]x+ions (x = 2–3). When the oligomers are oxidized using H2O2, the resulting phosphine oxide polymer may be treated with sodium ions to produce [M + xNa]x+ions (x = 2–3). Both methods predict a similar distribution of oligomers: Mnvalues of 3450 ± 100 Da and a PDI of 1.09 ± 0.01 cover both analyses. This distribution represents oligomers of the general formula Me(PMesCPh2)nH from n = 4–20, maximizing at ∼n = 10.
