Abstract
The suitability of 3-hydroxy-4-pyridylisoquinoline to operate as fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of metal ions was investigated. For that purpose, the interactions of the title compound with selected metal ions were investigated by absorption and emission spectroscopy. The complexation of Zn2+, Fe2+, Mg2+ with 1:1 and 2:1 stoichiometry leads to characteristic optical responses that depend significantly on the employed solvents, thus allowing for the fluorimetric identification and detection of particular metal cations in a matrix-based pattern analysis or by fluorimetric titrations. ![]()

Abstract
A label-free fluorescent aptasensing platform was fabricated and a simple and rapid method to detect Hg2+ ion in aqueous solution was put forward by means of berberine and Hg2+ ion-aptamer are as the fluorescence probe and the recognition element, respectively. Various factors including the concentration of berberine, Hg2+ ion and Hg2+ ion-aptamer, pH effect and the reaction time were investigated in detail. Under the optimal experimental conditions, in the sensing system, the fluorescence intensity changes displayed a calibration response for Hg2+ ion in the range of 0.1 μM to 10.0 μM and the detection limit was of 7.7 nM (S/N = 3). The fabricated label-free fluorescence aptasensor is not only conveniently but also effectively applicable used for analysis of Hg2+ ion in blood serum and tap water samples and the recovery range is of 96.0%-105.7%. In brief, this study offers an easy, economical and stable assay system for detecting Hg2+ ion in rough condition.

Abstract
A relay strategy has been proposed to design a new Hg(2+) chemodosimeter (TPE-S), by coupling Hg(2+)-promoted deprotection reaction with ketone-enol isomerization, realizing the multistage amplifying effect. Changes in both of color and fluorescence could occur immediately, and TPE-S displayed high selectivity for Hg(2+), other metal ions (Ag(+), Fe(3+), Cu(2+), Pb(2+), Co(2+), Cr(3+), Al(3+), Cd(2+), Mg(2+), Mn(2+), Ba(2+), Fe(2+), Ca(2+), Ni(2+), Zn(2+), Li(+), K(+) and Na(+)) gave nearly no disturbance to the sensing process. When fabricated as test strips similar to pH-indicator papers, immediate color change from colorless to purple could be visually observed by naked-eyes without the aid of any additional equipment, with the detection limit as low as 1 × 10(-7) M (Hg(2+) in aqueous solution). Due to its easy synthesis, high selectivity and sensitivity, combined with the portable test strips, TPE-S could be developed as a convenient and cost-effective tool for the detection of Hg(2+) in on-site inspections.

Abstract
By intelligent design, a new "turn-on" fluorescent probe (1-CN) was obtained based on the deprotection reaction of the dithioacetal promoted by Hg2+ ions, which could sense mercury ions sensitively and selectively, with the detection limit of 8×10(-7) M. Thanks to the apparent turn-on signal, 1-CN has been successfully applied to rapidly detect trace amounts of mercury ions as test strips and cell image.

Abstract
This review highlights the currently exploited working concepts of lab-on-a-molecule probes, with a particular focus on what is required for multianalyte detection and quantification in competitive assays. Both, chemosensor and chemodosimeter approaches are considered. The multifaceted design strategies and the orthogonal protocols are evaluated in order to identify and categorise the successful conceptions and to single out unknown territory and challenges for future work.
