The Tishchenko reaction mediated by organo-f-complexes: the myths and obstacles

For over a century, the Tishchenko reaction has been a valuable technique for synthesizing esters from aldehydes, serving a variety of applications in different domains. Beyond the remarkable advances in organoactinide and organolanthanide chemistry over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the research of the electrophilic d0/fn chemistry of organoactinide and organolanthanide compounds due to the captivating interplay between their structure and reactivity, and their exceptional performance in various homogeneous catalytic processes. The remarkable influence of ligand design, both in terms of steric hindrance and electronic properties, on the catalytic activity of organo-f-element complexes in organic transformations is well-established. However, the traditional view was that the significant oxophilicity of actinide and lanthanide complexes makes them unfavorable for reactions involving oxygen because of catalytic poisoning and their applications have been relatively limited, primarily focused on hydroalkoxylation, small-molecule activation, and cyclic ester polymerization. This review dissects the intricate interplay between ligand design and catalytic activity in actinide and lanthanide complexes, specifically in the context of the Tishchenko esterification.

Alpha-metalated N,N-dimethylbenzylamine rare-earth metal complexes and their catalytic applications

This perspective summarizes our group's extensive research in the realm of organometallic lanthanide complexes, while also placing the catalytic reactions supported by these species within the context of known lanthanide catalysis worldwide, with a specific focus on phosphorus-based catalytic reactions such as intermolecular hydrophosphination and hydrophosphinylation. α-Metalated N,N-dimethylbenzylamine ligands have been utilized to generate homoleptic lanthanide complexes, which have subsequently proven to be highly active lanthanum-based catalysts. The main goal of our research program has been to enhance the catalytic efficiency of lanthanum-based complexes, which began with initial successes in the stoichiometric synthesis of organometallic lanthanide complexes and utilization of these species in catalytic hydrophosphination reactions. Not only have these species supported traditional lanthanide catalysis, such as the hydrophosphination of heterocumulenes like carbodiimides, isocyanates, and isothiocyanates, but they have also been effective for a plethora of catalytic reactions tested thus far, including the hydrophosphinylation and hydrophosphorylation of nitriles, hydrophosphination and hydrophosphinylation of alkynes and alkenes, and the heterodehydrocoupling of silanes and amines. Each of these catalytic transformations is meritorious in its own right, offering new synthetic routes to generate organic scaffolds with enhanced functionality while concurrently minimizing both waste generation and energy consumption. Objectives: We aim for the research summary presented herein to inspire and encourage other researchers to investigate f-element based stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. Our efforts in this field began with the recognition that potassium salts of benzyldimethylamine preferred deprotonation at the α-position, rather than the ortho-position, and we wondered if this regiochemistry would be retained in the formation of lanthanide complexes. The pursuit of this simple idea led first to a series of structurally fascinating homoleptic organometallic lanthanide complexes with surprisingly good stability. Fundamental studies of the protonolysis chemistry of these complexes ultimately revealed highly versatile lanthanide-based precatalysts that have propelled a catalytic investigation spanning more than a decade. We anticipate that this summative perspective will animate the synthetic as well as biological communities to consider La(DMBA)3-based catalytic methods in the synthesis of functionalized organic scaffolds as an atom-economic, convenient, and efficient methodology. Ultimately, we envision our work making a positive impact on the advancement of novel chemical transformations and contributing to progress in various fields of science and technology.

Cholesky Decomposition-Based Implementation of Relativistic Two-Component Coupled-Cluster Methods for Medium-Sized Molecules

A Cholesky decomposition (CD)-based implementation of relativistic two-component coupled-cluster (CC) and equation-of-motion CC (EOM-CC) methods using an exact two-component Hamiltonian augmented with atomic-mean-field spin-orbit integrals (the X2CAMF scheme) is reported. The present CD-based implementation of X2CAMF-CC and EOM-CC methods employs atomic-orbital-based algorithms to avoid the construction of two-electron integrals and intermediates involving three and four virtual indices. Our CD-based implementation extends the applicability of X2CAMF-CC and EOM-CC methods to medium-sized molecules with the possibility to correlate around 1000 spinors. Benchmark calculations for uranium-containing small molecules were performed to assess the dependence of the CC results on the Cholesky threshold. A Cholesky threshold of 10-4 is shown to be sufficient to maintain chemical accuracy. Example calculations to illustrate the capability of the CD-based relativistic CC methods are reported for the bond-dissociation energy of the uranium hexafluoride molecule, UF6, with up to quadruple-ζ basis sets, and the lowest excitation energy in the solvated uranyl ion [UO22+(H2O)12].

Anti-Markovnikov Intermolecular Hydroamination of Alkenes and Alkynes: A Mechanistic View

Hydroamination, the addition of an N-H bond across a C-C multiple bond, is a reaction with a great synthetic potential. Important advances have been made in the last decades concerning catalysis of these reactions. However, controlling the regioselectivity in the amine addition toward the formation of anti-Markovnikov products (addition to the less substituted carbon) still remains a challenge, particularly in intermolecular hydroaminations of alkenes and alkynes. The goal of this review is to collect the systems in which intermolecular hydroamination of terminal alkynes and alkenes with anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity has been achieved. The focus will be placed on the mechanistic aspects of such reactions, to discern the step at which regioselectivity is decided and to unravel the factors that favor the anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity. In addition to the processes entailing direct addition of the amine to the C-C multiple bond, alternative pathways, involving several reactions to accomplish anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity (formal hydroamination processes), will also be discussed in this review. The catalysts gathered embrace most of the metal groups of the Periodic Table. Finally, a section discussing radical-mediated and metal-free approaches, as well as heterogeneous catalyzed processes, is also included.

Catalytic regeneration of metal-hydrides from their corresponding metal-alkoxides via the hydroboration of carbonates to obtain methanol and diols

Thorium complexes decorated with 5-, 6-, and 7-membered N-heterocyclic iminato ligands containing mesityl wingtip substitutions have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes were found to be efficient in the hydroboration of cyclic and linear organic carbonates with HBpin or 9-BBN promoting their decarbonylation and producing the corresponding boronated diols and methanol. In addition, the hydroboration of CO2 breaks the molecule into "CO" and "O" forming boronated methanol and pinBOBpin. Moreover, the demanding depolymerization of polycarbonates to the corresponding boronated diols and methanol opens the possibility of recycling polymers for energy sources. Increasing the core ring size of the ligands allows a better performance of the complexes. The reaction proceeds with high yields under mild reaction conditions, with low catalyst loading, and short reaction times, and shows a broad applicability scope. The reaction is achieved via the recycling of a high-energy Th-H moiety from a stable Th-OR motif. Experimental evidence and DFT calculations corroborate the formation of the thorium hydride species and the reduction of the carbonate with HBpin to the corresponding Bpin-protected alcohols and H3COBpin through the formate and acetal intermediates.

Gold-Based Coronands as Hosts for M3+ Metal Ions: Ring Size Matters

The controlled, self-assembled synthesis of multinuclear coordination compounds can be performed via different approaches. Frequently, steric, geometric and/or electronic factors located at the ligand systems predefine the way in which metal ions can assemble them to large aggregates. For the compounds in the present paper, also the Pearson's acidities and preferred coordination geometries of the metal ions were used as organization principles. The ligand under study, 2,6-dipicolinoylbis(N,N-diethylthiourea), H₂L1^ethyl, possesses 'soft' sulfur and 'hard' nitrogen and oxygen donors. One-pot reactions of this compound with [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) and M³⁺ salts (M = Sc, Y, La, Ln, Ga, In) give products with gold-based {Au₃(L1^ethyl)₃}³⁺ or {Au₂(L1^ethyl)₂}²⁺ coronands, which host central M³⁺ ions. The formation of such units is templated by the M³⁺ ions and the individual size of the coronand rings is dependent on the ionic radii of the central ions in a way that small ions such as Ga³⁺ form a [Ga⊂{Au₂(L1^ethyl)₂}]⁺ assembly, while larger ions (starting from Sc³⁺/In³⁺) establish neutral [M⊂{Au₃(L1^ethyl)₃}] units with nine-coordinate central ions.

An Arbitrarily Regulated Monomer Sequence in Multi-Block Copolymer Synthesis by Frustrated Lewis Pairs

Rapid access to sequence-controlled multi-block copolymers (multi-BCPs) remains as a challenging task in the polymer synthesis. Here we employ a Lewis pair (LP) composed of organophosphorus superbase and bulky organoaluminum to effectively copolymerize the mixture of methacrylate, cyclic acrylate, and two acrylates, into well-defined di-, tri-, tetra- and even a hepta-BCP in one-pot one-step manner. The combined livingness, dual-initiation and CSC feature of Lewis pair polymerization enable us to achieve not only a trihexaconta-BCP with the highest record in 8 steps by using four-component monomer mixture as building blocks, but also the arbitrarily-regulated monomer sequence in multi-BCP, simply by changing the composition and adding order of the monomer mixtures, thus demonstrating the powerful capability of our strategy in improving the efficiency and enriching the composition of multi-BCP synthesis.

Exploration of Ligand-Centered Hydride Transfer in La/Y-Catalyzed Deoxygenative Reduction of Tertiary Amides with Pinacolborane

A number of rare-earth metals and actinides have proven to be active in a wide variety of atom-efficient transformations. As compared to the related organometallic catalysts, the detailed mechanisms for the rare-earth metal-catalyzed reactions remain largely unexplored. Herein, the detailed catalyst activation process and reaction mechanisms of deoxygenative reduction of amides with pinacolborane (HBpin) catalyzed by Y[N(TMS)₂]₃ and La[N(TMS)₂]₃ complexes as well as a La₄(O)acac₁₀ cluster are investigated by density functional theory calculations. The M(III)-hemiaminal complex is disclosed to be the active catalyst for both the complexes and the cluster. During catalyst activation for both the Y and La complexes, the H-B bond polarity results in the formation of a transient M(III)-hydride intermediate, which is converted into an on-cycle M(III)-hemiaminal complex via facile migratory insertion. However, this kind of La(III)-hydride species cannot be formed for the La cluster. Starting from the M(III)-hemiaminal complex, the reaction proceeds via the ligand-centered hydride transfer mechanism that involves B-O bond formation, hydride transfer to B, C-O cleavage within the hemiaminal borane, hydride transfer to C, and σ-bond metathesis. The additional HBpin molecule is vital for the first hydride transfer that leads to the formation of [H₂Bpin]^- species. Our calculations reveal several important cooperative effects of the HBpin component during the hydride transfer processes. The improved mechanistic insights will be helpful for further development of selective C═O reduction.

A binuclear aluminium complex as a single competent catalyst for efficient synthesis of urea, biuret, isourea, isothiourea, phosphorylguanidine, and quinazolinones

The synthesis and characterisation of two mononuclear aluminium alkyl complexes with the general composition [Al(Me)₂{Ph₂P(E)N(CH₂)₂N(CH₂CH₂)₂O}] (E = Se (2a); S (2b)), and two binuclear aluminium complexes, [Al(Me)₂{Ph₂P-(E)N(CH₂)₂N(CH₂CH₂)₂O}(AlMe₃)] (E = Se (3a) and S (3b)), are described. The binuclear aluminium alkyl complex 3a proved to be a proficient catalyst for the addition of simple nucleophiles to heterocumulenes, leading to the synthesis of a variety of products such as urea, biuret, isourea, isothiourea, phosphorylguanidine, and quinazolinone derivatives, in contrast to its mononuclear analogues. Complex 3a is the first example of a single competent catalyst, which is also low-cost and eco-friendly and derived from a main-group metal, under solvent-free conditions either at room temperature or mild temperatures. Complex 3a possessed a wide functional group tolerance including heteroatoms, yielding the corresponding insertion products in good quantities and with high selectivity.

Route to Chemical Accuracy for Computational Uranium Thermochemistry

Benchmark spinor-based relativistic coupled-cluster calculations for the ionization energies of the uranium atom, the uranium monoxide molecule (UO), and the uranium dioxide molecule (UO₂) and for the bond dissociation energies of UO and UO₂ are reported. The accuracy of these calculations in the treatments of relativistic, electron-correlation, and basis-set effects is analyzed. The intrinsic convergence of the computed results and the favorable comparison with the experimental values demonstrate the unique applicability of the spinor representation of quantum-chemical methods to open-shell uranium-containing atomic and molecular species with uranium oxidation states ranging from U(0) to U(V).

Structural Diversity and Multielectron Reduction Reactivity of Samarium(II) Iodido-β-diketiminate Complexes Dependent on Tetrahydrofuran Content

The molecular structures of complexes [Sm(Nacnac)I(thf)_n] (Nacnac = HC(C(Me)Ndipp)₂^-, dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, thf = tetrahydrofuran) depending on the number of thf ligands are studied. The complete removal of thf from a known complex [Sm(Nacnac)I(thf)₂] leads to a tetranuclear product [Sm(Nacnac)I]₄ (4). The partial removal of thf results in mixtures of dinuclear [Sm₂(Nacnac)₂I₂(thf)] (2), trinuclear [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃I₃(thf)] (3), and tetranuclear [Sm₄(Nacnac)₄I₄(thf)₂] (4*) complexes and 4, depending on the conditions. The reaction of solvent-free SmI₂ with 1 equiv of K(Nacnac) results mainly in [Sm(Nacnac)₂] (1), while the interaction of 4 with certain amounts of thf allows obtaining pure 2 and 3 (with the admixture of 4*). Complex 4* is the exact dimer of 2, and both compounds are stable in solutions. Reactions with 3 and 4 as reductants are studied. 4 is oxidized by I₂ to stoichiometrically yield two products, mixed-valent tetranuclear [Sm₄(Nacnac)₄I₅] (5) and binuclear [Sm(Nacnac)I₂]₂ (6) complexes. In the reaction of 4 with ⁿBu₃PTe, a trinuclear complex [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃(μ-I)₃(μ₃-E)₂] (8, E = I or Te) is formed in small amounts, with the formation of 6 as the second product. 3 serves as a two-electron reductant in the reaction with ⁿBu₃PTe to yield a trinuclear complex [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃I₃(μ-Te₂)] (7). Complexes 2, 4, 4*, 5, 6, and 8 possess a unique flat Sm_xI_y core of heavy atoms, which is assumed to be a consequence of the Nacnac ligand geometry.

Chemodivergent Organolanthanide-Catalyzed C-H α-Mono-Borylation of Pyridines

Chemodivergent synthetic methodologies enable the efficient introduction of structural diversity into high-value organic products via simple chemical alterations. In this regard, C-H activation and functionalization of pyridinoid azines are important transformations in the synthesis of many natural products, pharmaceuticals, and functional materials. Reflecting on azinyl nitrogen lone-pair steric repulsion, its tendency to irreversibly coordinate metal ion catalysts, and the electron deficiency of pyridine, C-H functionalization at the important α-position remains challenging. Thus, developing earth-abundant catalysts for α-selective azine mono-functionalization is an attractive target for chemical synthesis. Here, the selective organolanthanide-catalyzed α-mono-borylation of a diverse series of 18 pyridines is reported using Cp*₂LuCH(TMS)₂ (Cp* = η⁵-C₅Me₅) (TMS = SiMe₃) and affording valuable precursors for subsequent functionalization. Experimental and theoretical mechanistic data reported here support the intermediacy of a C-H-activated η²-lanthanide-azine complex, followed by intermolecular α-mono-borylation via σ-bond metathesis. Notably, varying the lanthanide identity and substrate substituent electronic character promotes marked chemodivergence of the catalytic selectivity: smaller/more electrophilic lanthanide³⁺ ions and electron-rich substrates favor selective α-C-H functionalization, whereas larger/less electrophilic lanthanide³⁺ ions and electron-poor substrates favor selective B-N bond-forming 1,2-dearomatization. Such lanthanide series catalytic chemodivergence is, to our knowledge, unprecedented.

Mechanistic Studies Yield Improved Protocols for Base-Catalyzed Anti-Markovnikov Alcohol Addition Reactions

The catalytic anti-Markovnikov addition of alcohols to simple alkenes is a longstanding synthetic challenge. We recently disclosed the use of organic superbase catalysis for the nucleophilic addition of alcohols to activated styrene derivatives. This article describes mechanistic studies on this reversible reaction, including thermodynamic and kinetic profiling as well as computational modeling. Our findings show the negative entropy of addition is counterbalanced by an enthalpy that is most favored in nonpolar solvents. However, a large negative alcohol rate order under these conditions indicates excess alcohol sequesters the active alkoxide ion pairs, slowing the reaction rate. These observations led to an unexpected solution to a thermodynamically challenging reaction: use of less alcohol enables faster addition, which in turn allows for lower reaction temperatures to counteract Le Chatelier's principle. Thus, our original method has been improved with new protocols that do not require excess alcohol stoichiometry, enable an expanded alkene substrate scope, and allow for the use of more practical catalyst systems. The generality of this insight for other challenging hydroetherification reactions is also demonstrated through new alkenol cyclization and oxa-Michael addition reactions.

s-Block Metal Catalysts for the Hydroboration of Unsaturated Bonds

The addition of a B-H bond to an unsaturated bond (polarized or unpolarized) is a powerful and atom-economic tool for the synthesis of organoboranes. In recent years, s-block organometallics have appeared as alternative catalysts to transition-metal complexes, which traditionally catalyze the hydroboration of unsaturated bonds. Because of the recent and rapid development in the field of hydroboration of unsaturated bonds catalyzed by alkali (Li, Na, K) and alkaline earth (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) metals, we provide a detailed and updated comprehensive review that covers the synthesis, reactivity, and application of s-block metal catalysts in the hydroboration of polarized as well as unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds. Moreover, we describe the main reaction mechanisms, providing valuable insight into the reactivity of the s-block metal catalysts. Finally, we compare these s-block metal complexes with other redox-neutral catalytic systems based on p-block metals including aluminum complexes and f-block metal complexes of lanthanides and early actinides. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive, authoritative, and critical assessment of the state of the art within this highly interesting research area.

A Sacrificial Iminato Ligand in the Catalytic Cyanosilylation of Ketones Promoted by Organoactinide Complexes

Four new complexes containing the bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)thorium(IV) moiety, Cp*₂Th(L1)(Me) (Th2), Cp*₂Th(L2)(Me) (Th3), Cp*₂Th(L1)Cl (Th5), and Cp*₂Th(L2)Cl (Th6), were synthesized in quantitative yields via the protonolysis reaction of the metallocene precursor complexes Cp*₂Th(Me)₂ (Th1) and Cp*₂Th(Me)Cl (Th4) and the respective six- and seven-membered N-heterocyclic neutral imine ligands L1H and L2H. The molecular structures of all the complexes were established by single-crystal X-ray structure analyses. The synthesized complexes along with the precursor complexes were employed as catalysts for the cyanosilylation reaction of ketones with trimethylsilyl cyanide (Me₃SiCN). The removal of the iminato ligand is necessary to trigger the reaction, allowing the formation of the active catalyst.

Heterometallic CeIV/ VV Oxo Clusters with Adjustable Catalytic Reactivities

Heterometallic Ce^IV/M oxo clusters are underexplored yet and can benefit from synergistic properties from combining cerium and other metal cations to produce efficient redox catalysts. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of new Ce₁₂V₆ oxo clusters with different capping ligands: Ce₁₂V₆-SO₄, Ce₁₂V₆-OTs (OTs: toluenesulfonic acid), and Ce₁₂V₆-NBSA (NBSA: nitrobenzenesulfonic acid). Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) for all three structures reveals a Ce₁₂V₆ cubane core formulated [Ce₁₂(VO)₆O₂₄]¹⁸⁺ with cerium on the edges of the cube, vanadyl capping the faces, and sulfate on the corners. While infrared spectroscopy (IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) proved the successful coordination of the organic ligands to the Ce₁₂V₆ core, liquid phase ⁵¹V NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) confirmed the integrity of the clusters in the organic solutions. Furthermore, functionalization of the Ce₁₂V₆ core with organic ligands both provides increased solubility in term of homogeneous application and introduces porosity to the assemblies of Ce₁₂V₆-OTs and Ce₁₂V₆-NBSA in term of heterogeneous application, thus allowing more catalytic sites to be accessible and improving reactivity as compared to the nonporous and less soluble Ce₁₂V₆-SO₄. Meanwhile, the coordinated ligands also influenced the electronic environment of the catalytic sites, in turn affecting the reactivity of the cluster, which we probed by the selective oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). This work provides a strategy to make full use of the catalytic sites within a class of inorganic sulfate capped clusters via organic ligand introduction.

Transition Metal-Catalyzed Hydroalkoxylation of Alkynes: An Overview

Oxygen-bearing motifs, mainly the congener heterocycles are ubiquitous due to their presence in various natural products and bioactive scaffolds. Although in literature, several strategies have been developed for their synthesis, hydroalkoxylation of alkynes has come forward as a method of choice and has been used extensively. In particular, hydroalkoxylation of alkynes has gained enormous attention from the synthetic community due to the rapid access to a very useful and reactive synthetic intermediate like 'enol ether'. Furthermore, to manifold the utility of these methods, reports have been developed elaborating the generation of 'enol ether' using hydroalkoxylation and their usage in various reactions in cascade or tandem manner. This review focuses on recent development on the hydroalkoxylation of alkynes for the synthesis of oxygen-containing entities.

A Rare-Earth Metal Retrospective to Stimulate All Fields

Formulating insightful questions and experiments is crucial to the advancement of science. The purpose of this Perspective is to encourage scientists in all areas of chemistry to ask more "What if?" questions: What if we tried this experiment? What if we used these conditions? What if that idea is not correct? To stimulate this thinking, a retrospective analysis of a specific field, in this case rare-earth metal chemistry, is presented that describes the "What if?" questions that could have and should have been asked earlier based on our current knowledge. The goal is to provide scientists with a historical perspective of discovery that exemplifies how previous views in chemistry were often narrowed by predominant beliefs in principles that were incorrect. The same situation is likely to exist today, but we do not realize the limitations! Hopefully, this analysis can be used as a springboard for posing important "What if?" questions that should be asked right now in every area of chemical research.

Rare-earth-metallocene alkylaluminates trigger distinct tetrahydrofuran activation

Thermal treatment of Cp*2YMe(thf) (Cp* = C5Me5), obtained from Cp*2Y(AlMe4) via donor-induced AlMe3 cleavage, in THF resulted in the concomitant formation of vinyl oxide Cp*2Y(OC2H3)(thf) and 2-ethylene-tetrahydrofuranyl complex Cp*2Y(2-C2H4-OC4H7) via the release of methane. In stark contrast, dissolving Cp*2La(AlMe4) in THF/n-hexane led to the quantitative formation of AlMe3-stabilized 2-tetrahydrofuranyl complex Cp*2La(2-AlMe3-OC4H7), with methane elimination.

Recent advances in the carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond formation from unsaturated compounds by s- and p-block metals

Researchers around the globe have witnessed several breakthroughs in s- and p-block metal chemistry. Over the past few years, several applications in catalysis associated with these main group metals have been established, and owing to their abundance and low cost and they have proved to be essential alternatives to transition metal catalysts. In this review, we present a detailed discussion on the catalytic addition of P-H bonds from various phosphine reagents to multiple bonds of unsaturated substrates for the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds with C-P bonds promoted by various s- and p-block metal catalysts, as published in the last decade.

Remodeling of N-Heterocyclic Iminato Ligand Frameworks for the Facile Synthesis of Isoureas from Alcohols and Carbodiimides Promoted by Organoactinide (Th, U) Complexes

A new class of actinide complexes [(L)An(N{SiMe₃}₂)₃] (An = Th or U) (Th1-Th3 and U1-U3) supported by highly nucleophilic seven-membered N-heterocyclic iminato ligands were synthesized and fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes were successfully exploited as powerful catalysts for the addition of alcohols to carbodiimides to yield the corresponding desirable isourea products at room temperature with short reaction times and excellent yields. Thorough stoichiometric, thermodynamic, and kinetic studies were carried out, allowing us to propose a plausible mechanism for the catalytic reaction.

Recent developments in highly basic N-heterocyclic iminato ligands in actinide chemistry

In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Earth-Abundant 3d Transition Metal Catalysts for Hydroalkoxylation and Hydroamination of Unactivated Alkenes

This review summarizes the most noteworthy achievements in the field of C–O and C–N bond formation by hydroalkoxylation and hydroamination reactions on unactivated alkenes (including 1,2- and 1,3-dienes) promoted by earth-abundant 3d transition metal catalysts based on manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc. The relevant literature from 2012 until early 2021 has been covered.

Zinc-Catalyzed Hydroalkoxylation/Cyclization of Alkynyl Alcohols

Despite the great interest in zinc catalysis for hydroelementation reactions, the use of zinc complexes as catalysts for the hydroalkoxylation of alkynyl alcohols has not been reported to date. Scorpionate zinc complexes have been successfully designed as precatalysts for the hydroalkoxylation reaction of alkynyl alcohols under mild reaction conditions. Zinc amide complex 8 has been shown to be an excellent precatalyst for the highly selective intramolecular hydroalkoxylation process to yield the corresponding exocyclic enol ethers. Kinetic studies have been performed and confirmed that reactions are first-order in [catalyst] and zero-order in [alkynyl alcohol]. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis provided evidence for the formation of an alkynyl zinc compound which has been shown to be a key intermediate in the hydroalkoxylation process. On the basis of the experimental results, a catalytic cycle is proposed.

How the Ancillary Ligand X Drives the Redox Properties of Biscyclopentadienyl Pentavalent Uranium Cp2U(═N-Ar)X Complexes

Relativistic zero order regular approximation (ZORA) density functional theory computations, coupled with the conductor-like screening model for solvation effects, are used to investigate the redox properties of a series of biscyclopentadienyl pentavalent uranium(V) complexes Cp₂U(═N-Ar)X (Ar = 2,6-Me₂-C₆H₃; X = OTf, C₆F₅, SPh, C═CPh, NPh₂, Ph, Me, OPh, N(TMS)₂, N═CPh₂). Regarding the U^V/U^IV and U^VI/U^V couple systems, a linear correlation (R² ∼ 0.99) is obtained at the ZORA/BP86/TZP level, between the calculated ionization energies and the measured experimental E_1/2 half-wave oxidation potentials (U^VI/U^V) and between the electron affinities and the reduction potentials E_1/2 (U^V/U^IV). The study brings to light the importance of solvation effects that are needed in order to achieve a good agreement between the theory and experiment. Introducing spin-orbit coupling corrections slightly improves this agreement. Both the singly occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the neutral U^V complexes exhibit a majority 5f orbital character. The frontier molecular orbitals show a substantial ancillary ligand X σ and/or π character that drives the redox properties. Moreover, our investigations allow estimating the redox potentials of the X = Ph, X = C₆F₅, and N(TMS)₂ U^V complexes for which no experimental electrochemical data exist.

Ln(ii) alkyl complexes: from elusive exotics to catalytic applications

The synthesis, structures and reactivity of isolable Ln^II (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) alkyl complexes are discussed. The application of Ln^II alkyl derivatives in a variety of catalytic reactions is considered as well.

Mild catalytic deoxygenation of amides promoted by thorium metallocene

The organoactinide-catalyzed (Cp*2ThMe2) hydroborated reduction of a wide range of tertiary, secondary, and primary amides to the corresponding amines/amine-borane adducts via deoxygenation of the amides is reported herein. The catalytic reactions proceed under mild conditions with low catalyst loading and pinacolborane (HBpin) concentration in a selective fashion. Cp*2ThMe2 is capable of efficiently catalysing the gram-scale reaction without a drop in efficiency. The amine-borane adducts are successfully converted into free amine products in high conversions, which increases the usefulness of this catalytic system. A plausible mechanism is proposed based on detailed kinetics, stoichiometric, and deuterium labeling studies.

Isocyanate Insertion into a La-P Phosphide Bond: A Versatile Route to Phosphaureate-Bridged Heterobimetallic Lanthanide-Coinage-Metal Complexes

A new route to heterobimetallic lanthanide-coinage-metal complexes is disclosed. The selective insertion of organic substrates such as phenyl iso(thio)cyanate into the La-P bond of the primary phosphido complex (PN)2La(PHMes) (1) (with PN- = (N-(2-(diisopropylphosphanyl)-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylanilide) yields the phospha(thio)ureate complexes (PN)2La(OC(NPh)(PHMes)) (2) and (PN)2La(SC(NPh)(PHMes)) (3) with retention of the PH protons. Subsequent deprotonation of the phosphaureate complex 2 with potassium hexamethyldisilazide (KHMDS, K[N(SiMe3)2]) leads to the polymeric complex [K{(PN)2La(OC(NPh)(PMes))}]n (4). Complex 4 was found to be an excellent precursor for salt metathesis reactions with copper(I) and gold(I) chlorides supported by an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC, 5 and 6) or a cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC, 7 and 8). This resulted in the unprecedented formation of heterobimetallic lanthanum-coinage-metal complexes, containing the first example of a μ,κ2(O,N):κ1(P)-phosphaureate bridging ligand. For an alternative route to complex 8 a direct protonolysis protocol between a new basic gold(I) precursor, namely (MeCAAC)Au(HMDS), and 2 was also investigated. The complexes have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography (except for 8).

Monoanionic Anilidophosphine Ligand in Lanthanide Chemistry: Scope, Reactivity, and Electrochemistry

We present the synthesis of a series of new lanthanide(III) complexes supported by a monoanionic bidentate anilidophosphine ligand (N-(2-(diisopropylphosphanyl)-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylanilide, short PN^-). The work comprises the characterization of a variety of heteroleptic complexes containing either one or two PN ligands as well as a study on further functionalization possibilities. The new heteroleptic complexes cover selected examples over the whole lanthanide(III) series including lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and lutetium. In case of the two diamagnetic metal cations lanthanum(III) and lutetium(III), we have furthermore studied the influence of the lanthanide ion (early vs. late) on the reactivity of these complexes. Thereby we found that the radius of the lanthanide ion has a major influence on the reactivity. Using sterically demanding, multidentate ligand systems, e.g., cyclopentadienide (Cp^-), we found that the lanthanum complex La(PN)₂Cl (1-La) reacts well to the corresponding cyclopentadienide complex, while for Lu(PN)₂Cl (1-Lu) no reaction was observed under any conditions tested. On the contrary, employing monodentate ligands such as mesitolate, thiomesitolate, 2,4,6-trimethylanilide or 2,4,6-trimethylphenylphosphide, results in the clean formation of the desired complexes for both lanthanum and lutetium. All complexes have been studied by various techniques, including multi nuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. ³¹P NMR spectroscopy was furthermore used to evaluate the presence of open coordination sites on the complexes using coordinating and noncoordinating solvents, and as a probe for estimating the Ce-P distance in the corresponding complexes. Additionally, we present cyclic voltammetry (CV) data for Ce(PN)₂Cl (1-Ce), La(PN)₂Cl (1-La), Ce(PN)(HMDS)₂ (8-Ce) and La(PN)(HMDS)₂ (8-La) (with HMDS = hexamethyldisilazide, (Me₃Si)₂N^-) exploring the potential of the anilidophosphane ligand framework to stabilize a potential Ce(IV) ion.

Ln(ii) and Ca(ii) NCsp3N pincer type diarylmethanido complexes – promising catalysts for C–C and C–E (E = Si, P, N, S) bond formation

The first examples of Ln(ii) (Ln = Yb, Sm) and Ca [NC_sp3N] pincer type diarylmethanido complexes were synthesized and successfully used as efficient and selective precatalyst for intermolecular C–C and C–E bond formation.

Regioselectivity Influences in Platinum-Catalyzed Intramolecular Alkyne O-H and N-H Additions

The steric and electronic drivers of regioselectivity in platinum-catalyzed intramolecular hydroalkoxylation are elucidated. A branch point is found that divides the process between 5-exo and 6-endo selective processes, and enol ethers can be accessed in good yields for both oxygen heterocycles. The main influence arises from an electronic effect, where the alkyne substituent induces a polarization of the alkyne that leads to preferential heteroatom attack at the more electron-deficient carbon. The electronic effects are studied in other contexts, including hydroacyloxylation and hydroamination, and similar trends in directionality are predominant although not uniformly observed.
