Abstract
Metallosurfactants combine the unique soft-matter properties of surfactants with magnetic functionalities of metal ions. The inclusion of iron-based species, in particular, can further boost the functionality of the material, owing to iron's ability to adopt multiple oxidation states and form both high-spin and low-spin complexes. Motivated by this, a series of hybrid inorganic-organic dodecylpyridinium metallosurfactants with iron-containing counterions was developed. It was established that using either divalent or trivalent iron halides in a straightforward synthetic procedure yields C12Py-metallosurfactants with distinct complex counterions: (C12Py)2[Fe2X6O] and (C12Py)[FeX4] (X = Cl or Br), respectively. A combination of techniques-including conductometry, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, single-crystal and thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements-provided in-depth insights into their solution and solid-state properties. The presence of different iron-based counterions significantly influences the crystal structure (interdigitated vs. non-interdigitated bilayers), magnetic properties (paramagnetic vs. nonmagnetic singlet ground state), and self-assembly (vesicles vs. micelles) of the dodecylpyridinium series. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the synthesis and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic metallosurfactants containing the μ-oxo-hexahalo-diferrate anion.

Abstract
Designing and integrating Fe(iii)-based spin crossover (SCO) complexes onto substrates remains a challenging goal with only a handful of examples reported. In this work, we successfully synthesized and characterized three [Fe(qsal-OR)2]NO3 (qsal-OR = 5-alkoxy-2-[(8-quinolylimino)methyl]phenolate) complexes, in which R = C12H251, C16H332, and C22H453 to explore the impact of alkyl chain on the modulation of SCO activity and potential for self-assembly on a glass surface. The SCO is found to be gradual and incomplete in all cases, with the LS state more stabilised as the alkyl group shortens. We also demonstrate that all complexes form stable Langmuir films and achieve good transfer ratios to the glass surface, with 2 being the best in terms of stability. This paves the way for the SCO modulation of complexes in this class and the development of SCO devices.

Abstract
The dimeric (gemini) as well as metallosurfactants exhibit enhanced physicochemical properties compared with conventional surfactants. By uniting the benefits of both, a series of novel dimeric metallosurfactants of the type (12-2-12)[MBr4] (M = Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) was successfully prepared by the reaction of the dimeric surfactant bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecyl)ethylene-1,2-diammonium dibromide, 12-2-12, and the MBr2 salt. Structures and magnetic properties of the materials were studied comprehensively in the solid state, while their micellization was explored in solution. The obtained results unveil that the incorporation and the choice of transition metal more significantly influence surfactants' structures ((12-2-12)2+ cations adopt V-, U-, or trans-conformations) and the magnetic features (metal ions form 1D or 2D magnetic lattice) than their solution properties. However, all synthesized metallosurfactants display improved self-assembly properties compared with the metal-free precursor. The investigated systems represent a fruitful platform for the development of multifunctional materials as they are simple to produce, can be obtained in high yields, and show advanced properties both in solution and in the solid state. Notably, this work unveils a simple approach to the design and synthesis of novel low-dimensional magnetic systems of great potential for future spintronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
The field of spin-crossover complexes is rapidly evolving from the study of the spin transition phenomenon to its exploitation in molecular electronics. Such spin transition is gradual in a single-molecule, while in bulk it can be abrupt, showing sometimes thermal hysteresis and thus a memory effect. A convenient way to keep this bistability while reducing the size of the spin-crossover material is to process it as nanoparticles (NPs). Here, the most recent advances in the chemical design of these NPs and their integration into electronic devices, paying particular attention to optimizing the switching ratio are reviewed. Then, integrating spin-crossover NPs over 2D materials is focused to improve the endurance, performance, and detection of the spin state in these hybrid devices.

Abstract
In coordination chemistry and materials science, terpyridine ligands are of great interest, due to their ability to form stable complexes with a broad range of transition metal ions. We report three terpyridine ligands containing different perfluorocarbon (PFC) tails on the backbone and the corresponding FeII and CoII complexes. The CoII complexes display spin crossover close to ambient temperature, and the nature of this spin transition is influenced by the length of the PFC tail on the ligand backbone. The electrochemical properties of the metal complexes were investigated with cyclic voltammetry revealing one oxidation and several reduction processes. The fluorine-specific interactions were investigated by EPR measurements. Analysis of the EPR spectra of the complexes as microcrystalline powders and in solution reveals exchange-narrowed spectra without resolved hyperfine splittings arising from the 59 Co nucleus; this suggests complex aggregation in solution mediated by interactions of the PFC tails. Interestingly, addition of perfluoro-octanol in different ratios to the acetonitrile solution of the sample resulted in the disruption of the F ⋯ ${\cdots }$ F interactions of the tails. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation of fluorine-specific interactions in metal complexes through EPR spectroscopy, as exemplified by exchange narrowing.

Abstract
Two acyclic tetradentate Schiff base ligands, HLX-OH (X = H and Br), were synthesised by 2:1 condensation of either 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde or 5-bromo-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and 1,3-diamino-2-propanol and then used to prepare six mononuclear complexes, [FeII(HLX-OH)(NCE)2], with three different NCE co-ligands (E = BH3, Se, and S). The apparent solution spin crossover switching temperature, T1/2, of these 6 complexes, determined by Evans method NMR studies, is tuned by several factors: (a) substituent X present at the 5 position of the pyridine ring of the ligand, (b) E present in the NCE co-ligand, (c) solvent employed (P'), and (d) potentially also by speciation effects. In CD3CN, for the pair of NCE = NCBH3 complexes, when X = H, the complex is practically LS (extrapolated T1/2 ∼624 K), whereas when X = Br, it is far lower (373 K), which implies a higher field strength when X = H than when it is Br. The same trend, X = H results in a higher apparent T1/2 than X = Br, is seen for the other two pairs of complexes, with E = Se (429 > 351 K, ΔT1/2 = 78 K) or S (361 > 342 K, ΔT1/2 = 19 K). For the family of three X = Br complexes, the change of E from BH3 (373 K) to Se (351 K) to S (342 K) leads to an overall ΔT1/2(apparent) = 31 K, whereas the decreases are far more pronounced in the X = H family (BH3 ∼624 > Se 429 > S 361 K). Changing the solvent used from CD3CN to (CD3)2CO and CD3NO2, for [FeII(HLBr-OH)(NCE)2] with either E = BH3 or S, revealed excellent, and very similar, positive linear correlations (R2 = 0.99) of increasing solvent polarity index P' (from 5 to 7) with increasing apparent T1/2 of the complex (E = BH3 gave T1/2 300 < 373 < 451 K , ΔT1/2 = 151 K; E = S gave T1/2 288 < 342 < 427 K, ΔT1/2 = 147 K). Several other solvent parameters were also correlated with the apparent T1/2 of these complexes (R2 = 0.74-0.96). Excellent linear correlations (R2 = 0.99) are also obtained with the coordination ability (aTM) of the three NCE co-ligands with the apparent T1/2 in both families of compounds, [FeII(HLX-OH)(NCE)2] where X = H or Br. The 15N NMR chemical shifts of the nitrogen atom in the three NCE co-ligands (direct measurement) show modest correlations (R2 = 0.74 for LH-OH family and 0.80 for LBr-OH family) with the apparent T1/2 values of the corresponding complexes.

Abstract
The novel vacuum-evaporable complex [Fe(pypypyr)2] (pypypyr = bipyridyl pyrrolide) was synthesised and analysed as bulk material and as a thin film. In both cases, the compound is in its low-spin state up to temperatures of at least 510 K. Thus, it is conventionally considered a pure low-spin compound. According to the inverse energy gap law, the half time of the light-induced excited high-spin state of such compounds at temperatures approaching 0 K is expected to be in the regime of micro- or nanoseconds. In contrast to these expectations, the light-induced high-spin state of the title compound has a half time of several hours. We attribute this behaviour to a large structural difference between the two spin states along with four distinct distortion coordinates associated with the spin transition. This leads to a breakdown of single-mode behaviour and thus drastically decreases the relaxation rate of the metastable high-spin state. These unprecedented properties open up new strategies for the development of compounds showing light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) at high temperatures, potentially around room temperature, which is relevant for applications in molecular spintronics, sensors, displays and the like.

Abstract
A novel one-dimensional malleable spin-crossover (SCO) complex {[Fe(MPEG-trz)3](BF4)2} has been successfully synthesized by molecular self-assembly between 4-amino-1,2,4-triazoles (MPEG-trz) grafted with a long flexible chain methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG) and metallic complex Fe(BF4)2•6H2O. The detailed structure information was illustrated by using FT-IR and 1H NMR measurements, while the physical behaviors of the malleable SCO complexes were systematically investigated by using magnetic susceptibility measurements using superconductivity quantum interference device (SQUID) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This new metallopolymer exhibits a remarkable spin crossover transition behavior, between two spin quantum states (Fe2+ ions): high spin (HS) state (quintet state) and low spin (LS) state (singlet state), at a specific critical temperature with a slender hysteresis loop of 1 K. DFT computations revealed the partial rules of HOMO-LUMO energy levels and spin density distributions of different four-position substituted [Fe(1,2,4-triazole)3]2+ derivatives with different length of repeat units in polymer complexes. This can go a step further to depict the spin and magnetic transition behaviors of SCO polymer complexes. Furthermore, the coordination polymers possess an excellent processability due to an outstanding malleability, which can be easily shaped into a polymer film with spin magnetic switching properties.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) active iron(II) complexes are an integral class of switchable and bistable molecular materials. Spin-state switching properties of the SCO complexes have been studied in the bulk and single-molecule levels to progress toward fabricating molecule-based switching and memory elements. Supramolecular SCO complexes featuring anchoring groups for metallic electrodes, for example, gold (Au), are ideal candidates to study spin-state switching at the single-molecule level. In this study, we report on the spin-state switching characteristics of supramolecular iron(II) complexes 1 and 2 composed of functional 4-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-ylethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L1) and 4-(2-(5-(5-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)ethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L2) ligands, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed stretching-induced spin-state switching in a molecular junction composed of complex 1, taken as a representative example, and gold electrodes. Single-molecule conductance traces revealed the unfavorable orientation of the complexes in the junctions to demonstrate the spin-state dependence of the conductance.

Abstract
Structural and magnetic properties of a new spin crossover complex [Mn(4,6-diOMe-sal2323)]+ in lattices with ClO4−, (1), NO3−, (2), BF4−, (3), CF3SO3−, (4), and Cl− (5) counterions are reported. Comparison with the magnetostructural properties of the C6, C12, C18 and C22 alkylated analogues of the ClO4− salt of [Mn(4,6-diOMe-sal2323)]+ demonstrates that alkylation effectively switches off the thermal spin crossover pathway and the amphiphilic complexes are all high spin. The spin crossover quenching in the amphiphiles is further probed by magnetic, structural and Raman spectroscopic studies of the PF6− salts of the C6, C12 and C18 complexes of a related complex [Mn(3-OMe-sal2323)]+ which confirm a preference for the high spin state in all cases. Structural analysis is used to rationalize the choice of the spin quintet form in the seven amphiphilic complexes and to highlight the non-accessibility of the smaller spin triplet form of the ion more generally in dilute environments. We suggest that lattice pressure is a requirement to stabilize the spin triplet form of Mn3+ as the low spin form is not known to exist in solution.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) active transition metal complexes are an important class of switchable molecular materials due to their bistable spin-state switching characteristics at or around room temperature. Vacuum-sublimable SCO complexes are a subclass of SCO complexes suitable for fabricating ultraclean spin-switchable films desirable for applications, especially in molecular electronics/spintronics. Consequently, on-surface SCO of thin-films of sublimable SCO complexes have been studied employing spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, and results of fundamental and technological importance have been obtained. This Review provides complete coverage of advances made in the field of vacuum-sublimable SCO complexes: progress made in the design and synthesis of sublimable functional SCO complexes, on-surface SCO of molecular and multilayer thick films, and various molecular and thin-film device architectures based on the sublimable SCO complexes.

Abstract
The lanthanide directed self-assembly of chiral amphiphilic 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid based ligands 1 and 2 with various Ln(CF3SO3)3 (Ln = TbIII, SmIII, LuIII, DyIII) salts was studied in CH3CN and evaluated with the expected 1 : 3 and 1 : 1 Ln : Ligand species forming in solution. Ligand chirality was retained and transferred, as depicted by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements (for TbIII and SmIII), to the lanthanide centre upon complexation with high dissymmetry factor values for the SmIII complexes obtained (glum = -0.44 and 0.29 and 0.45 and -0.23 for the 4G5/2→6H5/2 and the 4G5/2→6H7/2 transitions of Sm·13 and Sm·23, respectively). The ability of the complexes to form stable Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface was also established while Langmuir-Blodgett films of Tb·L3 and Sm·L3 exhibited lanthanide luminescent emission.

Abstract
The spin-crossover (SCO) polymorph B (complex 1) of the known compound [FeII{N(CN)2}2(abpt)2], where abpt is 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, has been prepared in three different particle sizes averaging ∼300 (sample 1a), ∼80 (sample 1b), and ∼20 nm (sample 1c). Two independent octahedral molecules possessing Fe1 and Fe2 were found to be present in the crystal of B. Magnetostructural relationships had established that at room temperature both FeII sites are in the high-spin state (HS-HS), whereas a decrease in the temperature to 90 K induces the complete high-spin to low-spin conversion of the Fe1 site, with Fe2 remaining in the high-spin state (LS-HS). The three samples have been characterized by elemental analyses, ATR spectra, solution UV/vis spectra (to exclude resonance Raman effects) and powder X-ray diffraction patterns, while their morphological characteristics have been examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SCO behavior of the originally prepared sample 1a has been monitored in detail by variable-temperature Raman studies in the 300-80 K range using mainly low-frequency ν(Fe-N) and δ(NFeN) modes and the ν(C≡N) mode of the axial dicyanamido groups as spin-sensitive vibrations. The new peaks that appear in the low-temperature Raman spectra of the LS-HS form of the complex are reproduced in the calculated spectrum of the LS state of [FeII{N(CN)2}2(abpt)2]. The influence of the average particle size on the SCO properties of 1 has also been studied by variable-temperature Raman spectra. The studies indicate that, during the HS-HS → LS-HS transition, the latter form of the complex appears at higher temperatures for the smaller particles; the T1/2 shift accomplished by manipulating the particle size within a range of roughly 1 order of magnitude (300-20 nm) may be as high as ∼30 K. The SCO features of 1, as deduced from the Raman study, are in excellent agreement with those derived from a traditional variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility study, indicating the utility of the former.

Abstract
We propose a simple method for predicting the spin state of homoleptic complexes of the Fe(II) d6 ion with chelating diimine ligands. The approach is based on the analysis of a single metric parameter within a free (noncoordinated) ligand: the interatomic separation between the N-donor metal-binding sites. An extensive analysis of existing complexes allows the determination of critical N···N distances that dictate the regions of stability for the high-spin and low-spin complexes, as well as the intermediate range in which the magnetic bistability (spin crossover) can be observed. The prediction has been tested on several complexes that demonstrate the validity of our method.

Abstract
Due to its amphiphilic property, graphene oxide (GO) can achieve a variety of nanostructures with different morphologies (for example membranes, hydrogel, crumpled particles, hollow spheres, sack-cargo particles, Pickering emulsions, and so on) by self-assembly. The self-assembly is mostly derived from the self-concentration of GO sheets at various interfaces, including liquid-air, liquid-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces. This paper gives a comprehensive review of these assembly phenomena of GO at the three types of interfaces, the derived interfacial self-assembly techniques, and the as-obtained assembled materials and their properties. The interfacial self-assembly of GO, enabled by its fantastic features including the amphiphilicity, the negatively charged nature, abundant oxygen-containing groups and two-dimensional flexibility, is highlighted as an easy and well-controlled strategy for the design and preparation of functionalized carbon materials, and the use of self-assembly for uniform hybridization is addressed for preparing hybrid carbon materials with various functions. A number of new exciting and potential applications are also presented for the assembled GO-based materials. This contribution concludes with some personal perspectives on future challenges before interfacial self-assembly may become a major strategy for the application-targeted design and preparation of functionalized carbon materials.

Abstract
Three bis-tetradentate acyclic amine ligands differing only in the arm length of the pyridine pendant arms attached to the 4,6-positions of the pyrimidine ring, namely, 4,6-bis[N,N-bis(2'-pyridylethyl)aminomethyl]-2-phenylpyrimidine (L(Et)), 4,6-bis[N,N-bis(2'-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-2-phenylpyrimidine (L(Me)), and 4,6-[(2'-pyridylmethyl)-2'-pyridylethyl)aminomethyl]-2-phenylpyrimidine (L(Mix)) have been used to synthesize nine air-sensitive diiron(II) complexes: [Fe(II)(2)L(Et)(NCS)(4)]·MeOH·¾H(2)O (1·MeOH·¾H(2)O), [Fe(II)(2)L(Et)(NCSe)(4)]·H(2)O (2·H(2)O), [Fe(II)(2)L(Et)(NCBH(3))(4)]·(5/2)H(2)O (3·(5/2)H(2)O), [Fe(II)(2)L(Me)(NCS)(4)]·½H(2)O (4·½H(2)O), [Fe(II)(2)L(Me)(NCSe)(4)] (5), [Fe(II)(2)L(Me)(NCBH(3))(4)]·(3/2)H(2)O (6·(3/2)H(2)O), [Fe(II)(2)L(Mix)(NCS)(4)]·½H(2)O (7·½H(2)O), [Fe(II)(2)L(Mix)(NCSe)(4)]·(3/2)H(2)O (8·(3/2)H(2)O), and [Fe(II)(2)L(Mix)(NCBH(3))(4)]·(3/2)H(2)O (9·(3/2)H(2)O). Complexes 3·(5/2)H(2)O, 4·½H(2)O, 5, 6·(3/2)H(2)O, and 8·(3/2)H(2)O were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, revealing, in all cases, both of the iron(II) centers in an octahedral environment with two NCE (E = S, Se, or BH(3)) anions in a cis-position relative to one another. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that all nine diiron(II) complexes are stabilized in the [HS-HS] state from 300 K to 4 K, and exhibit weak antiferromagnetic coupling. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed the spin and oxidation states of eight of the nine complexes (the synthesis of air-sensitive complex 3 was not readily reproduced).
