Abstract
We report β-PbF2:Er3+/Yb3+ nanocrystals (NCs) modified with 6-aminocaproic acid (6AA) via wet chemical etching of glass ceramics (GCs). NCs body-doped with trivalent rare-earth (RE3+) ions were released from the GCs by etching of the glass matrix and modified with bifunctional 6AA ligands to enhance their water solubility. They have good stability in water with an average diameter of 56 nm and display efficient green (521, 550 nm) and red (660 nm) emission under the excitation of a 940 nm laser. High absolute sensitivity (S A) and relative sensitivity (S R) (0.0027 K-1 and 1.18% K-1, respectively) and high resolution (0.25 K) were achieved for temperature sensing in the biological temperature range, using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. All of the experimental results indicate that the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped NCs modified with 6AA may potentially be useful as fluorescent biological temperature sensors.

Abstract
The mechanism of C-H activation in selective oxidation reactions of short-chain alkane molecules over transition metal oxides is critically affected by the balance of acid-base and redox sites at the surface of the catalyst. Using the example of manganese tungstate we discuss how the relative abundance of these sites can be controlled via synthetic techniques. Phase-pure catalysts composed of the thermodynamic stable monoclinic MnWO4 phase have been prepared using hydrothermal synthesis. Variation of the initial pH value resulted in rod-shaped nano-crystalline MnWO4 catalysts composed of particles with varying aspect ratio. The synthesis products have been analysed using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared, and photoelectron spectroscopy. In situ Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the dissolution-re-crystallization processes occurring under hydrothermal conditions. Ethanol oxidation was applied to probe the surface functionalities in terms of acid-base and redox properties. Changes in the aspect ratio of the primary catalyst particles are reflected in the product distribution induced by altering the fraction of acid-base and redox sites exposed at the surface of the catalysts in agreement with the proposed mechanism of particle growth by re-crystallization during ageing under hydrothermal conditions.

Abstract
Inorganic materials with controllable shapes have been an intensely studied subject in nanoscience over the past decades. Control over novel and anisotropic shapes of inorganic nanomaterials differing from those of bulk materials leads to unique and tunable properties for widespread applications such as biomedicine, catalysis, fuels or solar cells and magnetic data storage. This review presents a comprehensive overview of shape-controlled inorganic nanomaterials via nucleation and growth theory and the control of experimental conditions (including supersaturation, temperature, surfactants and secondary nucleation), providing a brief account of the shape control of inorganic nanoparticles during wet-chemistry synthetic processes. Subsequently, typical mechanisms for shape-controlled inorganic nanoparticles and the general shape of the nanoparticles formed by each mechanism are also expounded. Furthermore, the differences between similar mechanisms for the shape control of inorganic nanoparticles are also clearly described. The authors envision that this review will provide valuable guidance on experimental conditions and process control for the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles with tunable shapes in the solution state.

Abstract
Nanomaterials with both superhydrophobic surface properties as well as photocatalytic activities could have important industrial applications. Herein, we synthesized CeVO4 nanocrystals with hexagonal nanoplate structures from the reaction of decavanadate (K6V10O28⋅9 H2O) and CeCl3⋅H2O precursors via a hydrothermal method. This synthetic route has four advantages: 1) the reaction condition is relatively mild, 2) it doesn't need surfactants or templates, 3) it requires no expensive equipment, and 4) products are of higher purity. During synthesis, solution pH, and reaction temperature were found to play important roles in determining the growth process and final morphologies of the CeVO4 products. These products were characterized spectrophotometrically and via scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the wettability of the as-synthesized film CeVO4 nanoplates was studied by measuring water contact angle (CA). The largest CA measured was at 169.5 ° for a glass substrate treated with 0.06 g mL(-1) CeVO4 followed by 2 % 1 H, 1 H, 2 H, 2 H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. Finally, the CeVO4 nanoplates exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity in degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under UV irradiation and was stable even after repeated cycles of use.

Abstract
Multimodal molecular imaging has recently attracted much attention on disease diagnostics by taking advantage of individual imaging modalities. Herein, we have demonstrated a new paradigm for multimodal bioimaging based on amino acids-anchored ultrasmall lanthanide-doped GdVO4 nanoprobes. On the merit of special metal-cation complexation and abundant functional groups, these amino acids-anchored nanoprobes showed high colloidal stability and excellent dispersibility. Additionally, due to typical paramagnetic behaviour, high X-ray mass absorption coefficient and strong fluorescence, these nanoprobes would provide a unique opportunity to develop multifunctional probes for MRI, CT and luminescence imaging. More importantly, the small size and biomolecular coatings endow the nanoprobes with effective metabolisability and high biocompatibility. With the superior stability, high biocompatibility, effective metabolisability and excellent contrast performance, amino acids-capped GdVO4:Eu(3+) nanocastings are a promising candidate as multimodal contrast agents and would bring more opportunities for biological and medical applications with further modifications.

Abstract
In the present work, a novel non-lanthanide dual-modality contrast agent, manganese tungstate (MnWO4), has been successfully constructed by a facile and versatile hydrothermal route. With the merits of a high atomic number and a well-positioned K-edge energy of tungsten, our well-prepared non-lanthanide nanoprobes provide a higher contrast efficacy than routine iodine-based agents in clinics. Additionally, the presence of Mn in these nanoparticles endow them with excellent T1-weighted MR imaging capabilities. As an alternative to T2-weighted MRI and CT dual-modality contrast agents, the nanoprobes can provide a positive contrast signal, which prevents confusion with the dark signals from hemorrhage and blood clots. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that a non-lanthanide imaging nanoprobe is applied for CT and T1-weighted MRI simultaneously. Moreover, comparing with gadolinium-based T1-weighted MRI and CT dual-modality contrast agents that were associated with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), our contrast agents have superior biocompatibility, which is proved by a detailed study of the pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and in vivo toxicology. Together with excellent dispersibility, high biocompatibility and superior contrast efficacy, these nanoprobes provide detailed and complementary information from dual-modality imaging over traditional single-mode imaging and bring more opportunities to the new generation of non-lanthanide nanoparticulate-based contrast agents.

Abstract
Size-tunable crystalline core-crystalline shell Zn2GeO4 nanorods were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction. High purity Zn2GeO4 nanorods were obtained at pH = 7. The length of Zn2GeO4 nanorods (L = 50-100 nm) can be controlled through a one-step process, while micro-sized nanorods with an aspect ratio of the length to the diameter of 10 were yielded in a two-step process. The single crystalline nature of Zn2GeO4 nanorods with a core-shell structure was verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) measurements. The Raman study revealed that there is no oxygen defect in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals, suggesting that photoluminescence emission of Zn2GeO4 can be attributed to the presence of the interstitial Zn defect in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals. As the diameter of nanorods decreased, the excitation and emission peaks appeared to be redshifted due to the quantum size effect.

Abstract
Metal oxide nanomaterials have been intensively pursued for modern science and nanotechnology. Control over the size and shape of the oxide nanoparticles enables tunability of their unique properties sought for many useful applications. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the shape-controlled synthesis of colloidal oxide nanoparticles. We introduce the size- and shape-dependent properties of the oxide nanoparticles along with their potential applications and subsequent descriptions of the kinetic regime concepts of the formation of the monodisperse nanocolloids. Variations of the experimental conditions including capping molecules, precursor monomer concentration, and reaction temperature/aging have been explored to control the shape of the oxide nanoparticles in wet-chemistry syntheses. The different capping molecule-assisted synthetic methods of the hydro-solvothermal route, the two-phase route, heating-up thermolysis, and reverse micelle are presented as a collection of clear examples of the regular oxide nanoparticles. We also discuss the advantages and obstacles of the synthetic methods that have proven to be controllable and reproducible. The author concludes this review with valuable portraits on working hypotheses for the shape-controlled oxide nanoparticle synthesis.

New mesoporous β-Co(OH)(2) /brilliant blue G (G250) hybrid hierarchical structures constructed by thin mesocrystal nanosheets can be synthesized by a one-step refluxing process under the synergistic effect of CTAB and G250. This approach opens up an avenue to access new novel inorganic/dye hybrid materials with hierarchical structures for pigment and electrocatalytic application.

Abstract
A conventional and general route has been exploited to the high yield synthesis of many kinds of highly crystalline metal oxide and mixed oxide nanocrystals with different morphologies including belt, rod, truncated-octahedron, cubic, sphere, sheet via the hydrothermal reaction of inorganic precursors in aqueous solution in the presence of bifunctional 6-aminohexanoic acid (AHA) molecules as a capping agent. This method is a simple, reproducible and general route for the preparation of a variety of high-crystalline inorganic nanocrystals in scale-up. The shape of inorganic nanocrystals such as CoWO(4), La(2)(MoO(4))(3) can be controlled by simply adjusting the synthesis conditions including pH solution and reaction temperature. Further, by tuning precursor monomer concentration, the mesocrystal hierarchical aggregated microspheres (e.g., MnWO(4), La(2)(MoO(4))(3)) can be achieved, due to the spontaneous assembly of individual AHA-capped nanoparticles. These obtained AHA-capped nanocrystals are excellent supports for the synthesis of a variety of hybrid metal/oxide nanocrystals in which noble metal particles are uniformly deposited on the surface of each individual nanosupport. The photocatalytic activity of Ag/TiO(2) nanobelts as a typical hybrid photocatalyst sample for Methylene Blue degradation was also studied.
