Abstract
Encapsulation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in confined spaces has been extensively explored as it dramatically alters the molecular dynamics and physical properties of the API. Herein, we explored the effect of encapsulation on the molecular dynamics and physical stability of a guest drug, salicylic acid (SA), confined in the intermolecular spaces of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based polypseudorotaxane (PPRX) structure. The sublimation tendency of SA encapsulated in three polymorphic forms of the γ-CD/PEG-based PPRX complex, monoclinic columnar (MC), hexagonal columnar (HC), and tetragonal columnar (TC), was investigated. The SA sublimation rate was decreased by 3.0-6.6-fold and varied in the order of MC form > HC form > TC form complex. The 13C and 1H magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and 13C spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) indicated that the encapsulated SA molecules existed as the monomeric form, and its molecular mobility increased in the order of MC form > HC form > TC form complex. In the complexes, a rapid chemical exchange between two dynamic states of SA (free and bound) was suggested, with varying adsorption/desorption rates accounting for its distinct molecular mobility. This adsorption/desorption process was influenced by proton exchange at the interaction site and interaction strength of SA in the complexes, as evidenced by 1H MAS spectra and temperature dependency of the 13C carbonyl chemical shift. A positive correlation between the molecular mobility of SA and its sublimation rate was established. Moreover, the molecular mobility of γ-CD and PEG in the complexes coincided with that of SA, which can be explained by fast guest-driven dynamics. This is the first report on the stability improvement of an API through complexation in polymorphic supramolecular host structures. The relationship between the molecular dynamics and physical properties of encapsulated API will aid in the rational design of drug delivery systems.

Abstract
Recently, inclusion complexes formed from cyclodextrins (CDs) and surfactants have been found to play complex and important roles in supramolecular self-assembly. In this work, the self-assembly of perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)/γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) in aqueous solution was investigated. The sole PFNA solution assembled into spherical uni-lamellar vesicles under certain concentrations as revealed by freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM) images. Interestingly, when γ-CD was added into the PFNA solution, one novel kind of cyclodextrin-based hydrogel with a crystal-like structure was obtained. The morphology of the hydrogels was inerratic parallel hexahedron or regular hexahedron as revealed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Furthermore, the hydrogels were transformed into crystalline precipitates, which were composed of highly uniform tetragonal sheets with excellent crystallinity and homogeneous size distribution just by changing the γ-CD concentration. More amazingly, the crystal-like hydrogels were sensitive to shear and switched to solutions in their morphology with bar-like and rod-like aggregates and smaller square sheets under different shear rates, and the hydrogel-solution transition behavior was a reversable process. 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) measurements were performed to lead us to propose the formation mechanism of the above aggregates. Hopefully, our studies will cast new light on the fundamental investigations into the self-assembly of supramolecular systems of fluorinated surfactants and CD molecules and provide a new idea for smart material design.

Abstract
Analogous to nucleic acids, the building blocks of nucleic acids and their derivatives are widely used to create supramolecular architectures for application mainly in the field of biomedicine. Here, we describe the construction of a multi-stimuli responsive and toxic dye adsorbing heterotypic hydrogel system formed using simple nucleoside-fatty acid conjugates. The nucleolipids are derived by coupling fatty acid chains of different lengths at the 5' position of ribothymidine and uridine. The nucleolipids in the presence of a strong base (e.g. NaOH) undergo partial hydrolysis, which triggers the self-assembly of the hydrolysed components resulting in the formation of heterotypic hydrogels. Notably, the gels are formed specifically in the presence of Na+ ions as other ions such as Li+ and K+ did not support the hydrogelation process. Systematic analysis by microscopy, NMR, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and rheology indicated that the deprotonated nucleolipid and fatty acid salt interdigitate and provide necessary electrostatic interactions supported by Na+ ions to set the path for the hierarchical assembly process. Notably, the hydrogels are highly sensitive to external stimuli, wherein gel-sol transition can be reversibly controlled by using temperature, pH and host-guest interaction. One of the hydrogels made of 5'-O-myristate-conjugated ribothymidine was found to selectively adsorb cationic dyes such as methylene blue and rhodamine 6G in a recyclable fashion. Taken together, the easily scalable assembly, multi-stimuli responsiveness and ability to capture and release dyes highlight the potential of our nucleolipid hydrogel system in material applications and in the treatment of dye industry wastes.

Abstract
The self-assembly of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) mixed with a fluorocarbon surfactant, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), in aqueous solution was studied. Interestingly, the 1:1 inclusion complex, PFNA@α-CD, was verified to form by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance measurement. Also as the building block, the PFNA@α-CD complex was further self-assembled into worm-like micelles under lower concentrations while hydrogels were self-assembled under higher concentrations. The hydrogels were composed of unilamellar vesicles with polydisperse size, which were clearly detected by freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy measurements. Besides, the vesicle hydrogels showed high viscoelasticities and a substantial elastic characteristic. Also as revealed by the results of Fourier transform infrared measurements, the driving force for the vesicle and worm-like micelle formation was the hydrogen bonding between α-CD molecules. Then, these vesicles were densely packed to form hydrogels. As far as we know, the self-assembly of CDs and fluorocarbon surfactants based on host-guest inclusion in aqueous solution has been limitedly reported. Our work successfully constructed hydrogels consisting of vesicles through the self-assembly of the α-CD/PFNA complex for the first time and will also provide a better understanding and enrich the fundamental research of the self-assembly behavior of the CD/fluorosurfactant complex.

Abstract
Facile control over preparation of organic building blocks and self-assembled aggregations to construct the desired materials remains challenges. This article reports selective dynamic covalent bonds formation and the corresponding self-assembly behaviors by using a dipeptide, glycylglycine (GlyGly), reacting with isomeric aromatic dialdehydes o-phthalaldehyde (OPA), p-phthalaldehyde (PPA), and m-phthalaldehyde (MPA) to demonstrate diversified aggregation forms caused by structure topology variations. Under alkaline condition, the aldehyde groups of phthalaldehydes can be connected with the amino groups of GlyGly by imine bonds as the dynamic chemical bonds. Owing to the fact that formation and dissociation of the imine bonds were reversibly pH-responsive, the reactions and aggregates assembled by their products were also reversibly controlled by changing pH. Three products, including two-armed product (OPGG, in which two GlyGly molecules were connected with one OPA molecule), single-armed product (PPG, in which only one GlyGly molecule was connected with a PPA molecule), and a mixture product (MPGG and MPG), as well as their different self-assembly behaviors, were obtained from OPA/GlyGly, PPA/GlyGly, and MPA/GlyGly systems, respectively, at the same condition of pH 8.6 in 90% methanol aqueous solution. However, for OPA/GlyGly system, another different type of product with benzopyrrole structure (OPG) was obtained by nucleophilic substitution via mixing OPA and GlyGly in water, which generated organic nanoparticles. Based on the results above, we conjectured the differences in dynamic covalent bond formation and supramolecular assembly clearly were influenced by the structure topologies of phthalaldehydes (OPA, PPA, and MPA). The experimental phenomenon verified the hypothesis as well, which may guide us to realize facile construction of selective reaction products and intelligent reversibly responsive materials with diverse morphologies and functions.

Abstract
In this review we intend to provide a relatively comprehensive summary of the work of supramolecular hydrogelators after 2004 and to put emphasis particularly on the applications of supramolecular hydrogels/hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials. After a brief introduction of methods for generating supramolecular hydrogels, we discuss supramolecular hydrogelators on the basis of their categories, such as small organic molecules, coordination complexes, peptides, nucleobases, and saccharides. Following molecular design, we focus on various potential applications of supramolecular hydrogels as molecular biomaterials, classified by their applications in cell cultures, tissue engineering, cell behavior, imaging, and unique applications of hydrogelators. Particularly, we discuss the applications of supramolecular hydrogelators after they form supramolecular assemblies but prior to reaching the critical gelation concentration because this subject is less explored but may hold equally great promise for helping address fundamental questions about the mechanisms or the consequences of the self-assembly of molecules, including low molecular weight ones. Finally, we provide a perspective on supramolecular hydrogelators. We hope that this review will serve as an updated introduction and reference for researchers who are interested in exploring supramolecular hydrogelators as molecular biomaterials for addressing the societal needs at various frontiers.

Abstract
The present work demonstrates one of the first examples of π-conjugated photonic switches (or photonic wave plates) based on the tailor-made π-conjugated polymer anisotropic organogel. New semicrystalline segmented π-conjugated polymers are designed with rigid aromatic oligophenylenevinylene π-core and flexible alkyl chain along the polymer backbone. These polymers are found to be self-assembled as semicrystalline or amorphous with respect to the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl units. These semicrystalline polymers produce organogels having nanofibrous morphology of 20 nm thickness with length up to 5 μm. The polymer organogel is aligned in a narrow glass capillary, and this anisotropic gel device is further demonstrated as photonic switches. The glass capillary device behaves as typical λ/4 photonic wave plates upon the illumination of the plane polarized light. The λ/4 photonic switching ability is found to be maximum at θ = 45° angle under the cross polarizers. The orthogonal arrangements of the gel capillaries produce dark and bright spots as on-and-off optical switches. Thermoreversibility of the polymer organogel (also its xerogel) was exploited to construct thermoresponsive photonic switches for the temperature window starting from 25 to 160 °C. The organic photonic switch concept can be adapted to large number of other π-conjugated materials for optical communication and storage.

Abstract
Anisotropy or alignment is a critical feature of functional soft materials in living organisms, but it remains a challenge for spontaneously generating anisotropic gel materials. Here we report a molecular design that increases intermolecular aromatic-aromatic interactions of hydrogelators during enzymatic hydrogelation for spontaneously forming an anisotropic hydrogel. This process, relying on both aromatic-aromatic interactions and enzyme catalysis, results in spontaneously aligned supramolecular nanofibers as the matrices of a monodomain hydrogel that exhibits significant birefringence. This work, as the first example of monodomain hydrogels formed via an enzymatic reaction, illustrates a new biomimetic approach for generating aligned anisotropic soft materials.

Abstract
A cross-linked supramolecular polymer network gel is designed and prepared, which shows reversible gel-sol transitions induced by changes in pH, temperature, cation concentration, and metal co-ordination. The gel pore size is controlled by the amount of cross-linker added to the system, and the material can be molded into shape-persistent, free-standing objects with elastic behavior. These features are all due to the dynamically reversible host-guest complexation and good mechanical properties of the cross-linked polymer network. No single organogel has previously been reported to possess all of these features, making this supramolecular gel an unprecedentedly intelligent soft material.
