Abstract
An efficient synthesis of sulfone structures through selenonium salts and sodium sulfinates was developed. Under the irradiation of a blue LED lamp, the two substrates generate aryl and sulfonyl radicals through the activation of the intermediate electron donor acceptor (EDA) complex, thereby synthesizing aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic sulfones in medium to good yields. The advantages of this strategy are metal-free, mild conditions and the leaving group is recycled to construct new selenonium salts.

Abstract
Divergent functionalization of α,β-unsaturated sulfones under copper catalysis is reported. Diastereoselective borylative allylation of alkenyl sulfones was achieved with a copper catalyst, allyl phosphate, bis(pinacolato)diboron, and LiOMe. In this method, the addition of a copper-boryl complex to alkenyl sulfone and subsequent allylic substitution rendered boroallylated products in good yield with excellent syn-diastereoselectivity. In contrast, a stronger base (KOt-Bu) promoted the reaction further toward the formation of (E)-skipped dienes, through elimination of the sulfonyl and boryl groups.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric hydroboration of alkenes is a powerful tool for the synthesis of natural products, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals via the versatile transformations of chiral alkyl boronic esters. However, the scope of available alkenes is limited to styrenes, activated alkenes, and compounds with directing groups. The catalytic enantioselective hydroboration of heteroatom-substituted alkenes is rarely explored and those catalyzed by earth-abundant metals are yet to be reported. Herein, we report a cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration of ketone-derived silyl enol ethers and provide a convenient approach to access valuable enantiopure β-hydroxy boronic esters. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee). This approach was applied in the successful synthesis of salmeterol and albuterol, demonstrating its potential to streamline complex molecule synthesis.

Abstract
A series of optically active β-hydroxy sulfones has been obtained through an oxosulfonylation-stereoselective reduction sequence in aqueous medium. Firstly, β-keto sulfones were synthesized from arylacetylenes and sodium sulfinates to subsequently develop the carbonyl reduction in a highly selective fashion using alcohol dehydrogenases as biocatalysts. Optimization of the chemical oxosulfonylation reaction was investigated, finding inexpensive iron(III) chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 ⋅ 6H2 O) as the catalyst of choice. The selection of isopropanol in the alcohol-water media resulted in high compatibility with the enzymatic process for enzyme cofactor recycling purposes, providing a straightforward access to both (R)- and (S)-β-hydroxy sulfones. The practical usefulness of this transformation was illustrated by describing the synthesis of a chiral intermediate of Apremilast. Interestingly, the development of a chemoenzymatic cascade approach avoided the isolation of β-keto sulfone intermediates, which allowed the preparation of chiral β-hydroxy sulfones in high conversion values (83-94 %) and excellent optical purities (94 to >99 % ee).

Abstract
Ketoreductase (KRED)-catalyzed asymmetric reduction of prochiral ketones is an attractive method to synthesize chiral alcohols. Herein, two KREDs LfSDR1-V186A/E141I and CgKR1-F92I with complementary stereopreference were identified towards reduction of apremilast prochiral ketone intermediate 1a. LfSDR1-V186A/E141I exhibited >99% conversion and 99.2% ee yielding an apremilast chiral alcohol intermediate ((R)-2a) at 50 g L-1 substrate loading. Furthermore, we investigated the substrate scope of β-keto sulfones by using LfSDR1-V186A/E141I and CgKR1-F92I to produce both enantiomers of the corresponding β-hydroxy sulfones, with good-to-excellent conversion (up to >99%) and enantioselectivity (up to 99.9% ee) being obtained in most cases. Finally, the gram-scale synthesis of (R)-2a was performed by employing the crude enzyme of LfSDR1-V186A/E141I and BsGDH to afford the desired enantiomer with >99% conversion, 85.9% isolated yield and 99.2% ee. This study presents a biocatalytic strategy to synthesize chiral β-hydroxy sulfones.

Abstract
Chiral organoboronates have played a critical role in organic chemistry and in the development of materials science and pharmaceuticals. Much effort has been devoted to exploring synthetic methodologies for the preparation of these compounds during the past few decades. Among the known methods, asymmetric catalysis has emerged as a practical and highly efficient strategy for their straightforward preparation, and recent years have witnessed remarkable advances in this respect. Approaches such as asymmetric borylative addition, asymmetric allylic borylation and stereospecific cross-coupling borylation, have been extensively explored and well established employing transition-metal catalysis with a chiral ligand. This review provides a comprehensive overview of transition metal-catalysed asymmetric borylation processes to construct carbon-boron, carbon-carbon, and other carbon-heteroatom bonds. It summarises a range of recent achievements in this area of research, with considerable attention devoted to the reaction modes and the mechanisms involved.

Abstract
The asymmetric hydroboration of alkenes has proven to be among the most powerful methods for the synthesis of chiral boron compounds. This protocol is well suitable for activated alkenes such as vinylarenes and alkenes bearing directing groups. However, the catalytic enantioselective hydroboration of O-substituted alkenes has remained unprecedented. Here we report a Rh-catalyzed enantioselective hydroboration of silyl enol ethers (SEEs) that utilizes two new chiral phosphine ligands we developed. This approach features mild reaction conditions and a broad substrate scope as well as excellent functional group tolerance, and enables highly efficient preparation of synthetically valuable chiral borylethers.

Abstract
The direct difunctionalization of inexpensive and widely available alkenes has been recognized as a strong and straightforward tool for the rapid fabrication of complex molecules and pharmaceutical targets by introducing two different functional groups on adjacent carbon atoms of common alkene moieties in a single operation. This synthetic strategy avoids the purification and isolation of the intermediates and thus makes synthetic schemes shorter, simpler and cleaner. In this family of reactions, the hydroxysulfonylation of alkenes has emerged as an increasingly promising strategy for the synthesis of β-hydroxysulfones, which are found in many biologically important molecules and widespread applications in organic synthesis. The objective of this review is to illustrate the advancements in the field of hydroxysulfonylation of alkenes with special emphasis on the mechanistic details of the reaction pathways. Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric remote conjugate borylation is challenging as the control of regioselectivity is not trivial, the electrophilicity of remote sites is extenuated, and the remote asymmetric induction away from the carbonyl group is difficult. Herein, catalytic asymmetric conjugate 1,6-, 1,8- and 1,10-borylation was developed with excellent regioselectivity, which delivered α-chiral boronates in moderate to high yields with high enantioselectivity. The produced chiral boronate smoothly underwent oxidation, cross-coupling, and one-carbon homologation to give synthetically versatile chiral compounds in moderate yields with excellent stereoretention. Furthermore, a stereomechanistic analysis was conducted using DFT calculations, which provides insights into the origins of the regioselectivity. Finally, the present 1,6-borylation was successfully applied in an efficient one-pot asymmetric synthesis of (-)-7,8-dihydrokavain.

Abstract
The Cu-catalyzed asymmetric carboboration of cyclohexadienone-tethered allenes has been achieved through regioselective β-borylation of the allenes and subsequent conjugate addition to cyclohexadienones, affording cis-bicyclic frameworks with acceptable yields and high to excellent enantioselectivities. Further conjugate borylation of the carboboration products proved to be a favorable kinetic resolution process, which improved the overall enantioselectivity. Finally, one-pot preparation of highly enantioenriched tricyclo[5.2.2.04,9]undecanes was developed from the cyclohexadienone-tethered allenes through β-borylation/1,4-addition and subsequent tandem oxidation/intramolecular aldol reaction.

An eco-friendly method for the synthesis of β-alkoxy sulfones via electrochemical alkoxysulfonylation reaction of styrenes with sodium sulfinates as sulfonyl sources has been established. The reaction is conducted in an undivided cell at room temperature and tolerates a wide scope of styrenes, sodium sulfinates, and alcohols. The reaction does not need any chemical oxidants and transition-metal catalysts, which provides a new and green access to β-alkoxy sulfones.

Abstract
Two catalytic asymmetric vinylogous aldol-type reactions of aldehydes with allyl phosphonate and allyl sulfone have been uncovered in good to high yields for the first time. The bulky ligand-(R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS-was found to be the key to perfectly control both regio- and enantioselectivities. Transformations of the vinylogous products (including Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons and Julia olefinations) were successfully realized by virtue of the phosphonate and sulfone moieties. Moreover, the present methodology was successfully applied in the asymmetric synthesis of natural products.

Abstract
A unified strategy for the construction of prevalent 1,3,5,... n (OH, Me) motifs based on consecutive copper-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate borylation (ACB) and methylation (ACA) reactions involving α,β-unsaturated 2-acyl- N-methylimidazoles is described. Good yields and high diastereoselectivities have been obtained in ACA and ACB reactions for both matched and mismatched pairs as illustrated in the synthesis of syn/ anti and anti/ anti (Me, OTBS, Me) and (OH, OTBS, Me) motifs.

Abstract
The metal-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) reaction has emerged as a general and powerful approach for the construction of optically active compounds and is among the most significant and useful reactions in synthetic organic chemistry. In recent years, great progress has been made in this area with the use of various chiral metal complexes based on different chiral ligands. This review provides comprehensive and critical information on the enantioselective 1,4-conjugate addition of nonorganometallic (soft) nucleophiles and their importance in synthetic applications. The literature is covered from the last 10 years, and a number of examples from before 2007 are included as background information. The review is divided into multiple parts according to the type of nucleophile involved in the reaction (such as C-, B-, O-, N-, S-, P-, and Si-centered nucleophiles) and metal catalyst systems used.

Abstract
An efficient one-pot multistep strategy has been developed, comprising auto-oxidative difunctionalization of alkenes, oxidation of sulfides, and a further reduction of peroxides for the synthesis of complex β-hydroxysulfone derivatives from phenthiols and alkenes. This method has several advantageous characteristics, including readily available substrates, low-cost and environmental benign reagents, nontoxic and renewable solvents, and mild reaction conditions. The application of this transformation to the multigram-scale preparation of the anticancer drug bicalutamide is accomplished.

Abstract
Copper-catalyzed borylation of β-trifluoromethyl-α,β-unsaturated ketones was efficiently achieved by means of bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2), affording the enantioenriched products in good yields with high enantioselectivities. CuI and (R,S)-Josiphos consist of the most efficient catalyst system under mild conditions. In the absence of the chiral ligand, the reactions could be performed more efficiently to form β-ketone derivatives which were directly borylated and indirectly trifluoromethylated at the β-carbon atom of the α,β-unsaturated ketone substrates. The present protocol provides a promising method to access a stereogenic carbon center bearing both CF3 and organoboron functional groups.

Abstract
Multicomponent catalytic enantioselective transformations that entail the combination of butadiene or isoprene (common feedstock), an enoate (prepared in one step) and B2 (pin)2 (commercially available) are presented. These processes constitute an uncommon instance of conjugate addition of an allyl moiety and afford the desired products in up to 83 % yield and 98:2 enantiomeric ratio. Based on DFT calculations stereochemical models and rationale for the observed profiles in selectivity are provided.

In this report, we establish that
DM-Segphos copper(I) complexes
are efficient catalysts for the enantioselective borylation of para-quinone methides. This method provides straightforward
access to chiral monobenzylic and dibenzylic boronic esters, with
enantiomeric ratios up to 96:4, using a commercially available chiral
phosphine. Standard manipulations of the C–B bond afford a
variety of chiral diaryl derivatives.

Abstract
New Peterson reagents were prepared by introducing alkyloxy groups on the silicon atom in order to fix the conformation of the sulfone anion. The reagents 1d and 1e reacted with a variety of aldehydes after the treatment with Li-base to give Z-α,β-unsaturated sulfones with up to >99:1 selectivity in good to excellent yields. For the reaction with aliphatic aldehydes, CPME (cyclopentyl methyl ether) is the choice of solvent, while DME (1,2-dimethoxyethane) gave higher selectivity for the reaction with aromatic aldehydes.

Abstract
Broadly applicable enantioselective C-B and C-Si bond-forming processes catalyzed by an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) were recently introduced; these boryl and silyl conjugate addition reactions (BCA and SCA, respectively), which proceed without the need for a transition-metal complex, represent reaction pathways that are distinct from those facilitated by transition-metal-containing species (e.g., Cu, Ni, Pt, Pd, or Rh based). The Lewis-base-catalyzed (NHC) transformations are valuable to chemical synthesis, as they can generate high enantioselectivities and possess unique chemoselectivity profiles. Here, the results of investigations that elucidate the principal features of the NHC-catalyzed BCA and SCA processes are detailed. Spectroscopic evidence is provided illustrating why the presence of excess base and MeOH or H2O is required for efficient and enantioselective boryl and silyl addition reactions. It is demonstrated that the proton sources influence the efficiency and/or enantioselectivity of NHC-catalyzed enantioselective transformations in several ways. The positive, and at times adverse, impact of water (biphasic conditions) on catalytic enantioselective silyl addition reactions is analyzed. It is shown that a proton source can facilitate nonenantioselective background reactions and NHC decomposition, requiring the catalyst to surpass such complications. Stereochemical models are presented that account for the identity of the observed major enantiomers, providing a rationale for the differences in selectivity profiles of BCA and SCA processes.
