Abstract
The 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (bpp) ligand family is widely recognized for its versatile coordination abilities and broad functionalization potential. This review examines bpp and its modifications at the pyridine ring's 4-position, focusing on their influence on magnetic, optical, and electronic properties. Key applications discussed include spin crossover (SCO), single-ion and single-molecule magnetism (SIM and SMM), luminescence, redox flow batteries (RFBs), and photonic devices. We provide a comprehensive overview of ligand modifications involving carboxylates, extended aromatic systems, radicals, and redox-active units such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), alongside supramolecular architectures. The review highlights fundamental design principles, particularly the role of substituents in tuning the SCO behavior, photophysical properties, and self-assembly into functional nanostructures. Notable advancements include SCO-driven conductivity modulation, reversible luminescent switching, and amphiphilic bpp-based vesicles for multicolor emission. By analyzing the interplay between ligand structure and magnetic, optical, and electronic functions, we provide insights into the potential of bpp derivatives for advanced materials design. This review presents recent experimental and theoretical developments, offering a foundation for future exploration of bpp-based compounds in multifunctional devices.

Abstract
Multifunctional magnetic materials have broad application prospects in molecular switches and information storage. In this study, four mononuclear Fe(II) complexes are synthesized using a series of pyrenylhydrazone ligands HL1-4. Two deprotonated ligands are coordinated to the iron(II) ions in an enolic form, leading to neutral complexes FeII(Lx)2·xsol with a FeIIN4O2 octahedral coordination environment. Magnetic measurements suggest that complex Fe(L1)2·2ACE (1·2ACE, ACE = acetone) is mainly low spin below 300 K and complex Fe(L3)2·ACE (3·ACE) is high spin, whereas complexes Fe(L2)2 (2) and Fe(L4)2·6H2O (4·6H2O) exhibit gradual spin crossover behavior. The spin states of complexes 1-4 are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The substituent effect on the magnetic properties of the complexes is significant in this system. Temperature-dependent fluorescence emission spectra show the coexistence but no coupling effect of spin crossover and fluorescence for complexes 2 and 4·6H2O.

Abstract
Reaction of 2,4,6-trifluoropyridine with sodium 3,4-dimethoxybenzenethiolate and 2 equiv of sodium pyrazolate in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature affords 4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenylsulfanyl)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L), in 30% yield. The iron(II) complexes [FeL2][BF4]2 (1a) and [FeL2][ClO4]2 (1b) are high-spin with a highly distorted six-coordinate geometry. This structural deviation from ideal D2d symmetry is common in high-spin [Fe(bpp)2]2+ (bpp = di{pyrazol-1-yl}pyridine) derivatives, which are important in spin-crossover materials research. The magnitude of the distortion in 1a and 1b is the largest yet discovered for a mononuclear complex. Gas-phase DFT calculations at the ω-B97X-D/6-311G** level of theory identified four minimum or local minimum structural pathways across the distortion landscape, all of which are observed experimentally in different complexes. Small distortions from D2d symmetry are energetically favorable in complexes with electron-donating ligand substituents, including sulfanyl groups, which also have smaller energy penalties associated with the lowest energy distortion pathway. Natural population analysis showed that these differences reflect greater changes to the Fe-N{pyridyl} σ-bonding as the distortion proceeds, in the presence of more electron-rich pyridyl donors. The results imply that [Fe(bpp)2]2+ derivatives with electron-donating pyridyl substituents are more likely to undergo cooperative spin transitions in the solid state. The high-spin salt [Fe(bpp)2][CF3SO3]2, which also has a strong angular distortion, is also briefly described and included in the analysis.

Abstract
We report the multi-step synthesis of the tetradentate 2-(naphthalen-2-yl)-5-[N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole ligand (LTetra-ODA) along with its corresponding [FeII(LTetra-ODA)(NCBH3)2]·1.5CH3OH (C1) complex, which is the first mononuclear 1,3,4-oxadiazole based Fe(II) spin crossover (SCO) complex, and its zinc analogue [ZnII(LTetra-ODA)(NCBH3)2]·0.5H2O (C2). The spin transition is followed by variable temperature (VT-) X-ray crystallography of [Fe(LTetra-ODA)(NCBH3)2]·1.5CH3OH (C1) at 120 and 220 K. The magnetic susceptibility measurements on the bulk sample recorded from 2 to 300 K show that the complex exhibits a complete abrupt reversible spin transition with a T1/2 of 207 K. The loss of the lattice solvent methanol shifts the T1/2 slightly to around 210 K. The spin transition in solution for [Fe(LTetra-ODA)(NCBH3)2]·1.5CH3OH (C1) was followed using the VT-1H-NMR Evans method in CD3CN, with a T1/2 of 357 K. Solid state VT luminescence studies provide some preliminary evidence of interplay of luminescence and spin transition in the [Fe(LTetra-ODA)(NCBH3)2]·1.5CH3OH (C1) complex.

Abstract
Abstract
4-(2,6-Di(2H-indazol-2-yl)pyridin-4-yl)benzoic acid (1) and 10-(2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridin-4-yl)anthracene-9-carboxylic acid (2) were required for adsorption studies on Ag(111), with a view to subsequent iron(II) complexation and formation of well-ordered spin-responsive self-assembled monolayers. While the generation of these compounds has remained elusive, several intermediates and by-products were obtained, potentially useful as dipyrazolylpyridine-related derivatives and for metal ion coordination. 3,5-Dichloro-2,6-diindazolylpyridine-4-amine, which forms as a mixture of regioisomers, was synthesised, the mixture separated, and the components characterised (3,5-dichloro-2,6-di(2H-indazol-2-yl)pyridin-4-amine; 3,5-dichloro-2-(1H-indazol-1-yl)-6-(2H-indazol-2-yl)pyridin-4-amine; 3,5-dichloro-2,6-di(1H-indazol-1-yl)pyridin-4-amine). Their iron(II) complexes have been prepared and fully characterised, including single crystal X-ray structure determination. The complexes are instructive examples of the influence of ligand design (“steric jamming”) on the spin-crossover (SCO) activity of FeII centres. Bulky substitution, which entails twisted ligand conformation, increases intramolecular crowding. This prevents contraction of the metal coordination sphere, which would be a prerequisite for thermally inducible SCO. Mössbauer spectroscopy has revealed that the complexes remain predominantly high-spin (HS) between 20 and 200 K, and that a mixture of conformational HS isomers is present in the microcrystalline solid.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) active iron(II) complexes are an integral class of switchable and bistable molecular materials. Spin-state switching properties of the SCO complexes have been studied in the bulk and single-molecule levels to progress toward fabricating molecule-based switching and memory elements. Supramolecular SCO complexes featuring anchoring groups for metallic electrodes, for example, gold (Au), are ideal candidates to study spin-state switching at the single-molecule level. In this study, we report on the spin-state switching characteristics of supramolecular iron(II) complexes 1 and 2 composed of functional 4-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-ylethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L1) and 4-(2-(5-(5-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)ethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L2) ligands, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed stretching-induced spin-state switching in a molecular junction composed of complex 1, taken as a representative example, and gold electrodes. Single-molecule conductance traces revealed the unfavorable orientation of the complexes in the junctions to demonstrate the spin-state dependence of the conductance.

Abstract
The synthesis of six 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine derivatives bearing dithiolane or carboxylic acid tether groups is described: [2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrid-4-yl]methyl (R)-lipoate (L1), 2-[(2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine)-4-carboxamido]ethyl (R)-lipoate (L2), 2-[(2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine)-4-carboxy]ethyl (R)-lipoate (L3), N-([2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrid-4-ylsulfanyl]-2-aminoethyl (R)-lipoamide (L4), 2-[(2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine)-4-carboxamido]acetic acid (L5) and 2-[(2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine)-4-carboxamido]propionic acid (L6). The iron(ii) perchlorate complexes of all the new ligands exhibit gradual thermal spin-crossover (SCO) in the solid state above room temperature, except L4 whose complex remains predominantly high-spin. Crystalline [Fe(L6)2][ClO4]2·2MeCN contains three unique cation sites which alternate within hydrogen-bonded chains, and undergo gradual SCO at different temperatures upon warming. The SCO midpoint temperature (T1/2) of the complexes in CD3CN solution ranges between 208-274 K, depending on the functional group linking the tether groups to the pyridyl ring. This could be useful for predicting how these complexes might behave when deposited on gold or silica surfaces.

Abstract
4-(tert-Butylsulfanyl)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L) was obtained in low yield from a one-pot reaction of 2,4,6-trifluoropyridine with 2-methylpropane-2-thiolate and sodium pyrazolate in a 1:1:2 ratio. The materials [FeL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅solv (1[BF4 ]2 ⋅solv) and [FeL2 ][ClO4 ]2 ⋅solv (1[ClO4 ]2 ⋅solv; solv=MeNO2 , MeCN or Me2 CO) exhibit a variety of structures and spin-state behaviors including thermal spin-crossover (SCO). Solvent loss on heating 1[BF4 ]2 ⋅x MeNO2 (x≈2.3) occurs in two steps. The intermediate phase exhibits hysteretic SCO around 250 K, involving a "reverse-SCO" step in its warming cycle at a scan rate of 5 K min-1 . The reverse-SCO is not observed in a slower 1 K min-1 measurement, however, confirming its kinetic nature. The final product [FeL2 ][BF4 ]2 ⋅0.75 MeNO2 was crystallographically characterized, and shows abrupt but incomplete SCO at 172 K which correlates with disorder of an L ligand. The asymmetric unit of 1[BF4 ]2 ⋅y Me2 CO (y≈1.6) contains five unique complex molecules, four of which undergo gradual SCO in at least two discrete steps. Low-spin 1[ClO4 ]2 ⋅0.5 Me2 CO is not isostructural with its BF4 - congener, and undergoes single-crystal-to-single-crystal solvent loss with a tripling of the crystallographic unit cell volume, while retaining the P 1 ‾ space group. Three other solvate salts undergo gradual thermal SCO. Two of these are isomorphous at room temperature, but transform to different low-temperature phases when the materials are fully low-spin.

Abstract
We present a new example of a mononuclear iron(ii) complex exhibiting a correlated spin-crossover (SCO) transition and strong fluorescence, whose coordination sphere is saturated, for the first time, by six phosphorescent ligands. The interplay between SCO and light emission properties in the thermal region of the spin transition was investigated by means of magnetic, fluorescence, optical absorption and optical microscopy measurements on a single crystal. Overall, the results show an excellent correlation between fluorescence and magnetic data of the present gradual transition, indicating an extreme sensitivity of the optical activity of the ligand to the spin state of the active iron(ii) ions. These results open the way for conceiving new prototypes of pressure and temperature sensors based on this synergy between SCO and luminescence properties. In particular, the fact that cooperative SCO material is not a prerequisite for obtaining such synergetic effects, is useful for the design of thin films or nanoparticles, in which the cooperativity is reduced, for appropriate implementation in nanosized devices to enhance the sensing properties at the nanoscale.

Bilayer Thin Films That Combine Luminescent and Spin Crossover Properties for an Efficient and Reversible Fluorescence Switching. MAGNETOCHEMISTRY 2019. Abstract
We report on the vacuum thermal deposition of bilayer thin films of the luminescent complex Ir(ppy)3, tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III), and the spin crossover complex [Fe(HB(tz)3)2], bis[hydrotris(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)borate]iron(II). Switching the spin state of iron ions from the low spin to the high spin state around 337 K leads to a reversible jump of the luminescence intensity, while the spectrum shape and the luminescence lifetime remain unchanged. The luminescence modulation occurs due to the different UV light absorption properties of the iron complex in the two spin states and its magnitude can therefore be precisely adjusted by varying the film thickness. These multilayer luminescence switches hold potential for micro- and nanoscale thermal sensing and imaging applications.

Abstract
Two phenyl ester and three benzyl ester derivatives have been synthesized from 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine-4-carboxylic acid and the appropriate phenyl or benzyl alcohol using N,N’-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide as the coupling reagent. Complexation of the ligands with Fe[BF4]2·6H2O in acetone yielded the corresponding [FeL2][BF4]2 complex salts. Four of the new ligands and four of the complexes have been crystallographically characterised. Particularly noteworthy are two polymorphs of [Fe(L3)2][BF4]2·2MeNO2 (L3 = 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl 2,6-di{pyrazol-1-yl}pyridine-4-carboxylate), one of which is crystallographically characterised as high-spin while the other exhibits the onset of spin-crossover above room temperature. The other complexes are similarly low-spin at low temperature but exhibit gradual spin-crossover on heating, except for an acetone solvate of [Fe(L5)2][BF4]2 (L5 = benzyl 2,6-di{pyrazol-1-yl}pyridine-4-carboxylate), which exhibits a more abrupt spin-transition at T½ = 273 K with 9 K thermal hysteresis.

Abstract
We propose a molecular switch based on copper dioxolene molecules with valence tautomeric properties. We study the system using density functional theory and a model Hamiltonian that can properly account for electronic correlations in these complex molecular systems. We compute the transport properties of the junction with a Cu-dioxolene unit sandwiched between gold electrodes and analyze its dependence on the valence tautomeric state of the molecule. We also study the effects of doping with ICl2 acceptor molecules on the magnetic and electronic features of the device. We find that in the absence of dopants, the Cu-dioxolene unit is weakly charged in a S = 1/2 spin state. However, the acceptors increase the charge state of the molecule and make possible a transition between the high-spin (S = 1) triplet and the low-spin (S = 0) singlet. The I-V dependence shows a manifestation of spin filtering and a voltage-induced multistable behavior that can have several applications in nanoscale electronic devices.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) molecules are versatile magnetic switches with applications in molecular electronics and spintronics. Downscaling devices to the single-molecule level remains, however, a challenging task since the switching mechanism in bulk is mediated by cooperative intermolecular interactions. Here, we report on electron transport through individual Fe-SCO molecules coupled to few-layer graphene electrodes via π-π stacking. We observe a distinct bistability in the conductance of the molecule and a careful comparison with density functional theory (DFT) calculations allows to associate the bistability with a SCO-induced orbital reconfiguration of the molecule. We find long spin-state lifetimes that are caused by the specific coordination of the magnetic core and the absence of intermolecular interactions according to our calculations. In contrast with bulk samples, the SCO transition is not triggered by temperature but induced by small perturbations in the molecule at any temperature. We propose plausible mechanisms that could trigger the SCO at the single-molecule level.

Tuning the Spin States of Two Apical Iron(II) Ions in a Pentanuclear Iron(II) Cluster Helicate through the Choice of Anions. CRYSTALS 2018. Abstract
Spin-crossover clusters with iron(II) high nuclearity are rare. By using 3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (bptH) as the ligand with two bidentate chelating sites, we successfully obtained three pentanuclear iron(II) cluster helicate compounds [{FeII(μ-bpt)3}2FeII3(μ3-O)][FeII2(μ-Br)(μ-bpt)(NCS)4(H2O)]·2H2O·C2H5OH (1), [{FeII(μ-bpt)3}2FeII3(μ3-O)][FeII2(μ-bpt)2(NCS)4] (2), and [{FeII(μ-bpt)3}2FeII3(μ3-O)]I2·2C2H5OH (3). Research on single-crystal structure and magnetism has indicated that tuning the spin state of two iron(II) ions in axial direction is successfully realized by regulating the different counter anions: one apical [FeII(bpt)3]− unit exhibits spin-crossover behavior while the other [FeII(bpt)3]− unit remains in low spin state in 1, both apical ions are of high spin states in 2, and are of low spin states in 3.

Abstract
The molecular structures and magnetic properties of homoleptic iron(ii) compounds [Fe(bpp-COOMe)2](ClO4)2 (1) and [Fe(bpp-triolH3)2](ClO4)2 (2) have been investigated to ascertain their spin crossover (SCO) behaviour. In these hexacoordinated complexes, the bpp (2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine) ligands adopt a mer-mer coordination mode and carry COOMe or C(O)NHC(CH2OH)3para substituents, respectively, on the central pyridyl ring. In spite of the almost equal donor power of the ligands to the iron(ii) centre, the two compounds feature different spin state configurations at room temperature. Compound 1 displays a highly-distorted octahedral environment around the iron(ii) centre, which adopts a high spin (HS) state at all temperatures, even under an external applied pressure up to 1.0 GPa. By contrast, 2 is characterized by a more regular octahedral coordination around the metal ion and exhibits a low spin (LS) configuration at or below room temperature. However, it shows a thermally-induced SCO behaviour at T > 400 K, along with Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping (LIESST) at low temperature, with TLIESST = 38 K. Since DFT (U)M06/6-311+G(d) geometry optimizations in vacuo indicate that both complexes should adopt a HS state and a highly-distorted coordination geometry, the stabilization of a LS configuration in 2 is ultimately ascribed to the effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which align the [Fe(bpp-triolH3)2]2+ cations in 1D chains and impart profound differences in the geometric arrangement of the ligands.

Abstract
Seven [FeL2][BF4]2 complex salts were prepared, where L is a 6-substituted 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (bpt) derivative. The complexes are all crystallographically high-spin, and exhibit significant distortions from an ideal D2d-symmetric coordination geometry. In one case, an unusual type of metal ion disorder was observed among a cubic array of ligands in the crystal lattice. The complexes are also high-spin between 3 and 300 K in the solid state and, where measured, between 239 and 333 K in CD3CN solution. This result is unexpected, since homoleptic iron(II) complexes of related 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine, 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrazine, and 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyrimidine derivatives often exhibit thermal spin-crossover behavior. Gas-phase density functional theory calculations confirm the high-spin form of [Fe(bpt)2]2+ and its derivatives is stabilized relative to iron(II) complexes of the other ligand types. This reflects a weaker Fe/pyrazolyl σ-bonding interaction, which we attribute to a small narrowing of the chelate ligand bite angle associated with the geometry of the 1,3,5-triazinyl ring. Hence, the high-spin state of [Fe(bpt)2]2+ centers does not reflect the electronic properties of its heterocyclic ligand donors but is imposed by the bpt ligand conformation. A high-spin homoleptic iron(III) complex of one of the bpt derivatives was also synthesized.

Abstract
This paper presents the synthesis of two highly soluble Fe(II) metallosupramolecular polymers with two counter anions from a novel back-to-back coupled hybrid ligand. The spin cross-over (SCO) temperature of polymers with BF4 and ClO4 counter anions is T1/2 = 313 K and T1/2 = 326 K, respectively. By following the top-down approach, one of the polymers (with ClO4 counter anion) is successfully solution processed using a lithographically controlled wetting technique to create laser readable high-resolution Archimedean (4,8(2) ) nanolattices (consist of diamagnetic octagons and SCO squares). The thickness and top area of each SCO square are ≈75 nm and ≈2 × 2 μm(2) , respectively.

Abstract
Reaction of 2,6-difluoropyridine with 2 equiv of indazole and NaH at room temperature affords a mixture of 2,6-bis(indazol-1-yl)pyridine (1-bip), 2-(indazol-1-yl)-6-(indazol-2-yl)pyridine (1,2-bip), and 2,6-bis(indazol-2-yl)pyridine (2-bip), which can be separated by solvent extraction. A two-step procedure using the same conditions also affords both 2-(indazol-1-yl)-6-(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (1-ipp) and 2-(indazol-2-yl)-6-(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (2-ipp). These are all annelated analogues of 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine, an important ligand for spin-crossover complexes. Iron(II) complexes [Fe(1-bip)2](2+), [Fe(1,2-bip)2](2+), and [Fe(1-ipp)2](2+) are low-spin at room temperature, reflecting sterically imposed conformational rigidity of the 1-indazolyl ligands. In contrast, the 2-indazolyl complexes [Fe(2-bip)2](2+) and [Fe(2-ipp)2](2+) are high-spin in solution at room temperature, whereas salts of [Fe(2-bip)2](2+) exhibit thermal spin transitions in the solid state. Notably, [Fe(2-bip)2][BF4]2·2MeNO2 adopts a terpyridine embrace lattice structure and undergoes a spin transition near room temperature after annealing, resulting in thermal hysteresis that is wider than previously observed for this structure type (T1/2 = 266 K, ΔT = 16-20 K). This reflects enhanced mechanical coupling between the cations in the lattice through interdigitation of their ligand arms, which supports a previously proposed structure/function relationship for spin-crossover materials with this form of crystal packing. All of the compounds in this work exhibit blue fluorescence in solution under ambient conditions. In most cases, the ligand-based emission maxima are slightly red shifted upon complexation, but there is no detectable correlation between the emission maximum and the spin state of the iron centers.

Abstract
Three one-dimensional (1D) hetereobimetallic coordination polymers [Fe(II)(L)2(AgCN)2]·Solv (L = bpt(-), 1; L = Mebpt(-), Solv = 1.75EtOH, 2; L = bpzt(-), 3) with in situ generated AgCN species were synthesized by solvothermal reactions of Fe(II) salt, K[Ag(CN)2], and the corresponding ligands [bptH = 3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, MebptH = 3-(3-methyl-2-pyridyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole, and bpztH = 3,5-bis(pyrazin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole]. They were further characterized by X-ray crystallography, magnetic and photomagnetic measurements, and differential scanning calorimetry. Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that they are isostructural with 1D zigzag chain structures with rhombus {Fe2Ag2} units, in which the substituted bpt(-) ligand connects the Fe(II) ion and AgCN species in a cis bridging mode. Then the zigzag chains are packed into three-dimensional supramolecular structures by π···π interactions. Most importantly, weak Ag···N interactions (2.750 Å at 150 K) between the π-stacked neighboring chains present in complex 3. Magnetic susceptibility measurements exhibit that complex 1 displays characteristic paramagnetic behavior in the temperature range investigated. Complex 2 undergoes a gradual spin-crossover (SCO) with critical temperatures T(1/2)↓ = 232 K and T(1/2)↑ = 235 K, whereas 3 exhibits an abrupt SCO with critical temperatures T(1/2)↓ = 286 K and T(1/2)↑ = 292 K. The magnetostructural relationships suggest that the magnetic behaviors can be modulated from paramagnetic behavior to abrupt and hysteretic SCO near room temperature through adjustment of the electronic substituent effect and intermolecular interactions.

Abstract
The thermal and photo-induced switching properties of the recently published molecular spin crossover complex [Fe(H4L)2](ClO4)2·H2O·2(CH3)2CO () have been investigated in detail through Raman spectroscopy. Magnetometric and single crystal X-ray diffraction kinetic studies within the hysteresis loop have proven its metastable character, which allowed establishing the shape of the true, quasi-static hysteresis loop. This is related to the proximity of the temperatures of the thermal high to low spin SCO (T1/2↓) to those of the relaxation of the thermally or photo-generated metastable states (T(TIESST) and T(LIESST), respectively). Green light irradiation within the hysteresis loop results in a complete low to high spin photo-switch. In addition, the SCO of at room temperature can be induced by applying pressure, as followed by Raman spectroscopy.
