Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) as a trace contaminant has been reported, due to widespread use in the plastics industry. This study applied the 35 kHz ultrasound (US) to activate four different common oxidants (H2O2, HSO5-, S2O82-, and IO4-) for BPA degradation. With increasing initial concentration of oxidants, the degradation rate of BPA increased. The synergy index confirmed that a synergistic relationship between US and oxidants. This study also examined the impact of pH and temperature. The results showed that the kinetic constants of US, US-H2O2, US-HSO5- and US-IO4-decreased when the pH increased from 6 to 11. The optimal pH for US-S2O82- was 8. Notably, increasing temperature decreased the performance of US, US-H2O2, and US-IO4- systems, while it could increase the degradation of BPA in US-S2O82- and US-HSO5-. The activation energy for BPA decomposition using the US-IO4- system was the lowest, at 0.453nullkJnullmol-1, and the synergy index was the highest at 2.22. Additionally, the ΔG# value was found to be 2.11 + 0.29T when the temperature ranged from 25 °C to 45 °C. The main oxidation contribution is achieved by hydroxyl radicals in scavenger test. The mechanism of activation of US-oxidant is heat and electron transfer. In the case of the US-IO4- system, the economic analysis yielded 271 kwh m-3, which was approximately 2.4 times lower than that of the US process.

Abstract
Although periodate-based advanced oxidation processes have been proven to be efficient in abating organic contaminants, the activation properties of different periodate species remain largely unclear. Herein, by highlighting the role of H4IO6-, we reinvestigated the pH effect on the decontamination performance of the H2O2/periodate process. Results revealed that elevating pH from 2.0 to 10.0 could markedly accelerate the rates of organic contaminant decay but decrease the amounts of organic contaminant removal. This pH-dependent trend of organic contaminant degradation corresponded well with the HO· yield and the variation of periodate species. Specifically, although 1O2 could be detected at pH 9.0, HO· was determined to be the major reactive oxidizing species in the H2O2/periodate process under all the tested pH levels. Furthermore, it was suggested that only H4IO6- and H2I2O104- could serve as the precursors of HO·. The second-order rate constant for the reaction of H2I2O104- species with H2O2 was determined to be ∼1199.5 M-1 s-1 at pH 9.0, which was two orders of magnitude greater than that of H4IO6- (∼2.2 M-1 s-1 at pH 3.0). Taken together, the reaction pathways of H2O2 with different periodate species were proposed. These fundamental findings could improve our understanding of the periodate-based advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract
Sea has historically been subject to high anthropogenic pressures of direct and indirect loads of emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) from intensive industrial and agricultural activities. Photoactivated periodate (UV/IO4-) is an innovative oxidation technique that was never tested in seawater as pollutants matrix. In this work, we attempted to investigate the treatment of seawater contaminated with chlorazol black (CB) dye, as a model of EOPs, using photoactivated periodate process. It was found that periodate (0.5mM) assisted-UV treatment of CB (20mgL-1) in seawater resulted in 13.16-fold increase in the initial degradation rate, compared to UV alone, and 82% of CB was removed after 40min face to 38% under UV alone. The beneficial effect of UV/IO4- treatment is strongly dependent on operational parameters. More interestingly, SDS surfactant, as an organic matter, did not affect the degradation process, making UV/IO4- a promising technique for treating seawater contaminated with EOPs.

Abstract
In this paper, the effect of periodate (IO4-) on the ultrasonic degradation at 300kHz of Brilliant Blue R (BBR), an organic dye pollutant, was investigated. The experiments were realized in the absence and presence of periodate for various operating conditions including initial solution pH (2-8) and delivered ultrasonic power (20-80W). It was found that periodate greatly enhanced the sonochemical degradation of BBR. The degradation rate increased significantly with increasing IO4- concentration up to 10mM and decreased afterward. With 10mM of periodate, the degradation rate was 2.4-fold higher than that with ultrasound alone. The chemical probes experiments showed that periodate activation into free radicals (IO3, IO4 and OH) takes place by sonolysis and iodine radicals contribute significantly in the oxidation process. It was found that the periodate-enhanced effect was strongly experimental parameters dependent. The advantageous effect of periodate increased significantly with decreasing power and the best enhancing effect was obtained for the lowest power. Correspondingly, the periodate-enhanced effect increased with pH increase in the range 2-8 and it was more remarkable at near alkaline condition (pH 8). A reaction scheme for periodate sonolysis was proposed, for the first time, discussed and then used for interpreting the obtained results.
