Neutral copper–phosphido-borane complexes: synthesis, characterization, and use as precatalysts in Csp–P bond formation

Phosphido-borane-supported stannates

The reactions between SnCl₂ and three equivalents of the alkali metal phosphido-borane complexes [R₂P(BH₃)]M yield the corresponding tris(phosphido-borane)stannate complexes [L_nM{R₂P(BH₃)}₃Sn] [R₂ = iPr₂, L_nM = (THF)₃Li (2Li), (Et₂O)Na (2Na), (Et₂O)K (2K); R₂ = Ph₂, L_nM = (THF)Li (3Li), (THF)(Et₂O)Na (3Na), (THF)(Et₂O)K (3K); R₂ = iPrPh, L_nM = (THF)₄Li (4Li)]. In each case X-ray crystallography reveals an anion consisting of a trigonal pyramidal tin centre coordinated by the P atoms of the phosphido-borane ligands. These tris(phosphido-borane)stannate anions coordinate to the alkali metal cations via their BH₃ hydrogen atoms in a variety of modes to give monomers, dimers, and polymers, depending on the alkali metal and the substituents at the phosphorus centres. In contrast, reactions between SnCl₂ and three equivalents of [tBu₂P(BH₃)]M (M = Li, Na) gave the known hydride [M{tBu₂P(BH₃)}₂SnH], according to multinuclear NMR spectroscopy.

Copper(I)-Catalyzed Asymmetric Synthesis of P-Chiral Aminophosphinites

Herein, a copper(I)-catalyzed reaction of diarylphosphines and O-benzoyl hydroxylamines is developed. In the cases of symmetrical diarylphosphines, a series of aminophosphinites is prepared in high yields. In the cases of unsymmetrical diarylphosphines, an array of P-chiral aminophosphinites is synthesized in high yields with high enantioselectivity by using a copper(I)-(R,R_P )-Ph-FOXAP complex as a chiral catalyst. Based on several control experiments and ³¹ P NMR studies, a two-electron redox mechanism involving the dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation of unsymmetrical diarylphosphines is proposed for the copper(I)-catalyzed asymmetric reaction. Finally, one representative P-chiral phosphoric amide generated through the oxidation with H₂ O₂ is transformed to a chiral diarylphosphinate in high yield with retained enantioselectivity, which allows further transformations towards various P-chiral tertiary phosphines.

New discovery in crystallography: correlation of terahertz time-domain spectra with crystal structures and photoluminescence properties of mononuclear/binuclear diimine–Cu(i)-phosphine complexes

A method was provided for qualitatively determining the photoluminescence quantum yield of diimine–Cu(i) complex by the waveform of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy.

Synthesis, spectroscopic characterisation and transmetalation of lithium and potassium diaminophosphanide-boranes

A secondary diaminophosphane-borane (Et₂N)₂PH(BH₃) was prepared from a chlorophosphane precursor and LiBH₄ and metalated by reaction with anion bases (n-BuLi, KN(SiMe₃)₂) to yield the corresponding metal diaminophosphanide-boranes [(Et₂N)₂P(BH₃)]M (M = Li, K). Multinuclear NMR studies permitted the first spectroscopic characterisation of the metalation products and revealed the presence of monomeric (for M = Li) contact ion pairs in solution. NMR spectroscopic evidence that the ions in each pair interact via LiP- rather than LiH₃B-interactions as had been inferred for a Ph-substituted analogue was confirmed by DFT studies, which revealed also that the borane coordination plays a decisive role in boosting the PH-acidity of the original secondary diaminophosphane precursor. Transmetalation of the potassium and lithium diaminophosphanide-boranes with Cu(i) and Zn(ii) chlorides afforded the first functional transition metal complexes of a P-heteroatom-functionalised phosphanide-borane ligand. Both products were fully characterised. Thermolysis of the Cu-complex induced a reaction which involved transfer of an NHC ligand from the metal to the phosphorus atom and yielded a phosphaalkene NHC[double bond, length as m-dash]PH (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) as the major phosphorus-containing product.

Coinage metal coordination chemistry of stable primary, secondary and tertiary ferrocenylethyl-based phosphines

Ferrocene-based phosphines constitute an important auxiliary ligand in inorganic chemistry. Utilizing the (ferrocenylethyl)phosphines (FcCH2CH2)3-nHnP (Fc = ferrocenyl; n = 2, 1; n = 1, 2; n = 0, 3) the synthesis of a series of coordination complexes [(FcCH2CH2)3-nHnPCuCl]4 (n = 2, 1-CuCl; n = 0, 3-CuCl), [(FcCH2CH2)2HPCuCl] (2-CuCl), {[(FcCH2CH2)H2P]2AgCl}2 (1-AgCl), [(FcCH2CH2)2HPAgCl] (2-AgCl), [(FcCH2CH2)3PAgCl]4 (3-AgCl), [(FcCH2CH2)3PM(OAc)]4 (M = Cu, 3-CuOAc M = Ag, 3-AgOAc), [(FcCH2CH2)3-nHnPAuCl] (n = 1, 2-AuCl; n = 0, 3-AuCl), via the reaction between the free phosphine and MX (M = Cu, Ag and Au; X = Cl, OAc), is described. The reaction between the respective phosphine with a suspension of metal-chloride or -acetate in a 1 : 1 ratio in THF at ambient temperature affords coordinated phosphine-coinage metal complexes. Varying structural motifs are observed in the solid state, as determined via single crystal X-ray analysis of 1-CuCl, 3-CuCl, 1-AgCl, 3-AgCl, 3-CuOAc, 3-AgOAc, 2-AuCl and 3-AuCl. Complexes 1-CuCl and 3-CuCl are tetrameric Cu(i) cubane-like structures with a Cu4Cl4 core, whereas silver complexes with primary and tertiary phosphine reveal two different structural types. The structure of 1-AgCl, unlike the rest, displays the coordination of two phosphines to each silver atom and shows a quadrangle defined by two Ag and two Cl atoms. In contrast, 3-AgCl is distorted from a cubane structure via elongation of one of the ClAg distances. 3-CuOAc and 3-AgOAc are isostructural with step-like cores, while complexes 2-AuCl and 3-AuCl reveal a linear geometry of a phosphine gold(i) chloride devoid of any aurophilic interactions. All of the complexes were characterized in solution by multinuclear (1)H, (13)C{(1)H} and (31)P NMR spectroscopic techniques; the redox chemistry of the series of complexes was examined using cyclic voltammetry. This class of complexes has been found to exhibit one reversible Fe(ii)/Fe(iii) oxidation couple, suggesting the absence of electronic communication between the ferrocenyl units on individual phosphine ligands as well as between different phosphines on the polymetallic cores.

Preparation of phosphines through C-P bond formation

Phosphines are an important class of ligands in the field of metal-catalysis. This has spurred the development of new routes toward functionalized phosphines. Some of the most important C–P bond formation strategies were reviewed and organized according to the hybridization of carbon in the newly formed C–P bond.

Phosphoryl group as a strong σ-donor anionic phosphine-type ligand: a combined experimental and theoretical study on long-lived room temperature luminescence of the [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(Ph2PO)]+ complex

A phosphoryl Ru(II) polypyridyl complex was prepared in a one-pot process. Theoretical analysis suggests that the phosphoryl ligand may be viewed as a strong σ-donor anionic phosphine L-type ligand. State-of-the-art free-energy profile calculations on the excited states demonstrate that both favorable thermodynamic and kinetic factors are responsible for the remarkable room temperature luminescence properties of the phosphoryl complex.

Stoichiometric and catalytic synthesis of alkynylphosphines

Alkynylphosphines or their borane complexes are available either through C–P bond forming reactions or through modification of the phosphorus or the alkynyl function of various alkynyl phosphorus derivatives. The latter strategy, and in particular the one involving phosphoryl reduction by alanes or silanes, is the method of choice for preparing primary and secondary alkynylphosphines, while the former strategy is usually employed for the synthesis of tertiary alkynylphosphines or their borane complexes. The classical C–P bond forming methods rely on the reaction between halophosphines or their borane complexes with terminal acetylenes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of organometallic bases, which precludes the access to alkynylphosphines bearing sensitive functional groups. In less than a decade, efficient catalytic procedures, mostly involving copper complexes and either an electrophilic or a nucleophilic phosphorus reagent, have emerged. By proceeding under mild conditions, these new methods have allowed a significant broadening of the substituent scope and structure complexity.
