Abstract
The selective capture of radioactive cesium, strontium, and lanthanides from liquid nuclear waste is of great significance to environmental remediation and human health. Herein, the rapid and selective removal of Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3+ ions is achieved by two metal sulfides (FJSM-SnS-2 and FJSM-SnS-3). Both structures feature [Sn3S7]n2n- layers with the mixed cations of [CH3NH3]+ and [Bmmim]+ (1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium) as templates. However, the ratios and arrangements of mixed cations in the interlayered spaces are distinct. It is unprecedented that [CH3NH3]+ and [Bmmim]+ in FJSM-SnS-2 are alternatingly arranged in different interlayered spaces, whereas they in FJSM-SnS-3 are located in the same interlayered spaces. It is the first time that the ionic liquid cation and protonated organic amine have been simultaneously incorporated into metal sulfides. Both compounds show high capacities, rapid kinetics, and a wide pH active range for Cs+, Sr2+, and Eu3+. Even under excess Na+ ions, both show excellent selectivity in capturing trace Sr2+ and Eu3+ ions. FJSM-SnS-3 presents the highest KdEu to date. They still retain high removal efficiency even after intense β and γ radiation. Moreover, it is first confirmed by the in situ tracking method of mass spectrometry that the large-sized [Bmmim]+ ions are exchangeable. It is found that the arrangement of cations between interlayered spaces is a crucial factor affecting ion exchange performance. This work will likely change the consensus that large-sized organic cations are difficult to be exchanged and thus further highlight the great potential of metal sulfide ion exchangers for radionuclide remediation.

Abstract
Rare earth elements (REY) are the lanthanide elements (Z = 57-71), which have an ever-growing occurrence in present-day industries, agriculture, and modern life. Consequently, environmental concentrations are expected to increase accordingly as a result of intensified utilization. Soils are an important sink for REY, yet little research has been conducted concerning activity, inputs, and lability in soil systems. This study evaluated the REY (lanthanides + yttrium) sorption and partition coefficients (Kd) in two broadly representative natural soils (A horizon), with contrasting mineralogy and organic character, formed under distinct environmental conditions: an Oxisol from Brazil and a Mollisol from the USA. Batch reactions of soils suspended in a background electrolyte solution of 5 μmoles kg-1 of Ca(NO3)2 at 1:100 solid to solution were reacted with 80 μmoles kg-1 REY added individually and in multi-REY competitive systems to evaluated adsorption after 3 h and 72 h over a wide pH range (from ca. 2 to 8). Results showed sorption was similar for all REY within each soil type when examined at the natural measured soil pH; Mollisol pH 6.85, Oxisol pH 4.35. However, REY sorption (by Kd) was nearly two-fold greater in the Mollisol compared to the Oxisol for the single REY experiments. Multi-REY competitive sorption reactions showed a decrease in Kd for both soils at 3 and 72 h, and to a greater extent for the Mollisol, indicating soil type had a strong effect on the sorption affinity of each REY. It was also observed that REY sorption increased from low to high pH (pH 2-8) in the Oxisol, and increased with pH from 2 up to the point zero charge (PZC) in the Mollisol, then stabilized. The varying REY Kd values from these two distinct and abundant soils, with and without REY competition, and over a range of pH are explained in terms of soil mineralogy (i.e., 2:1 clays in the Mollisol; oxides in the Oxisol) and organic matter content. Our findings show that soil characteristic controls sorption, precipitation, and cation exchange capacity, which are the key mechanisms for predicting REY fate and transport in the environment.

Abstract
The decontamination of U(VI) on graphene oxide/nano-alumina (GO/Al2O3) composites were investigated by batch, XRD, FT-IR and XPS techniques. The characterization results showed that GO/Al2O3 composites presented a variety of oxygen-containing functional groups, which provided the more surface reactive sites. The batch experiments indicated that sorption equilibrium of U(VI) on GO/Al2O3 composites was achieved within 30 min, and the maximum sorption capacity derived from Langmuir model was 142.8 mg/g at pH 6.5. In addition, the slight decrease of sorption capacity was observed even after fifth recycling times. These results indicated that GO/Al2O3 composites displayed the fast sorption rate, high sorption capacity and good regeneration performance. No effect of ionic strength revealed the inner-sphere surface complexation of U(VI) on GO/Al2O3 composites. FT-IR and XPS analysis demonstrated that the high adsorption of U(VI) on GO/Al2O3 was attributed to the various oxygen-bearing functional groups. In addition, the nano Al2O3 was transferred to amorphous AlO(OH) mineral phase by XRD pattern, which provided the additional reactive sorption sites. These observations indicated that GO-based composites can be regarded as a promising adsorbent for immobilization and pre-concentration of U(VI) from aqueous solutions in the environmental remediation.

Sorption of Eu (III) onto Nano-Sized H-Titanates of Different Structures. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2019. [DOI: 10.3390/app9040697] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/16/2022]
Abstract
Hydrogen titanates (H-titanates) of different nanostructures (nanotubes, nanowires, nanosheets) have been synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The europium (III) sorption from aqueous solutions onto nano-sized H-titanates was studied as a function of contact time, pH values, and initial Eu (III) concentration in batch experiments. Reversibility of adsorption of europium has been investigated as well. Nano-sized H-titanates can be used for tri-valent f-elements removal in polluted water treatment due to fast and efficient sorption of Eu (III).

Abstract
Magnetic biochar composites were successfully fabricated by pyrolysis of siderite and rice husk under N2 condition. The results of a variety of characterization implied magnetic biochar displayed porous structures with larger specific surface area. The batch adsorption experiments showed high adsorption properties of magnetic biochar composites toward U(VI) (52.63 mg/g at pH 4.0), whereas U(VI) adsorption was significantly influenced by Na2CO3 and HA. U(VI) adsorbed onto magnetic biochar was reduced to U(IV) by Fe3O4 according to XPS and XANES analyses. In addition, no significant effect of ionic strength of NaCl and EXAFS results, illustrated the inner-sphere surface complexation of U(VI) on magnetic biochar. Owing to the simple synthesis procedure, low cost, high adsorption efficiency, easy separation and environmental friendly, magnetic biochar can be considered as a potential adsorbent for the purification of U(VI)-bearing wastewater in environmental remediation.

Enhanced Adsorption of Zn(II) onto Graphene Oxides Investigated Using Batch and Modeling Techniques. NANOMATERIALS 2018; 8:nano8100806. Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized and employed as an adsorbent for Zn(II) removal from an aqueous solution. The adsorption isotherms showed that Zn(II) adsorption can be better described using the Freundlich model than the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Zn(II) on GO determined using the Langmuir model at pH 7.0 and 293 K was 208.33 mg/g. The calculation of thermodynamic parameters revealed that the process of Zn(II) adsorption on GO was chemisorptions, endothermic, and spontaneous. Kinetic studies indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model showed a better simulation of Zn(II) adsorption than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. On the basis of surface complexation modeling, the double layer model provided a satisfactory prediction of Zn(II) by inner-sphere surface complexes (for example, SOZn+ and SOZnOH species), indicating that the interaction mechanism between Zn(II) and GO was mainly inner-sphere complexation. In terms of reusability, GO could maintain 92.23% of its initial capability after six cycles. These findings indicated that GO was a promising candidate for the immobilization and preconcentration of Zn(II) from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Abstract
In this study, magnetic biosorbent was fabricated by chemical co-precipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) on the surface Paeclomyces catenlannulatus (P. catenlannulatus) by adding NaOH solution under N2 conditions. The influence of water chemistries (i. e. pH, reaction time, temperature, concentration and ionic strength) on Eu(III) biosorption towards magnetic biosorbent was elucidated by batch technique. The batch experiment showed that Eu(III) biosorption on magnetic biosorbent was independent of ionic strength, suggesting that inner-sphere-surface-complexation predominated Eu(III) biosorption. The biosorption kinetics showed the sorption equilibrium was achieved at reaction time of 24 h, and the maximum biosorption capacity of Eu(III) on magnetic biosorbent calculated by Langmuir model was 69.45 mg/g at pH 3.5 and 298 K. The regeneration experiments showed the slight decrease of biosorption capacity after the fifth recycles. These results suggested that this magnetic biosorbent presented the fast biosorption rate and high biosorption capacity for Eu(III). The results of XPS analysis revealed that various oxygenated function groups (e.g. carboxyl, hydroxyl groups) were responsible for the high effective biosorption of Eu(III). These findings manifested that this magnetic biosorbent could be as a high-effective material for the immobilization and pre-concentration of radionuclides from aqueous solution in environment remediation.

Abstract
New nanoscale zerovalent iron/carbon (nZVI/C) composites were successfully prepared via heating natural hematite and pine sawdust at 800 °C under nitrogen conditions. Characterization by SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses indicated that the as-prepared nZVI/C composites contained a large number of reactive sites. The lack of influence of the ionic strength revealed inner-sphere complexation dominated U(VI) uptake by the nZVI/C composites. Simultaneous adsorption and reduction were involved in the uptake process of U(VI) according to the results of XPS and XANES analyses. The presence of U-C/U-U shells demonstrated that innersphere complexation and surface coprecipitation dominated the U(VI) uptake at low and high pH conditions, respectively. The uptake behaviors of U(VI) by the nZVI/C composites were fitted well by surface complexation modeling with two weak and two strong sites. The maximum uptake capacity of U(VI) by the nZVI/C composites was 186.92 mg/g at pH 4.0 and 328 K. Additionally, the nZVI/C composites presented good recyclability and recoverability for U(VI) uptake in regeneration experiments. These observations indicated that the nZVI/C composites can be considered as potential adsorbents to remove radionuclides for environmental remediation.

Abstract
The order of long-range atomic arrangement obviously decreases in the order MA3 > MA2 > MA1 and is inversely correlated with the adsorption abilities of these aluminas. Therefore, strongly disordered atomic arrangements enhance the As(v) uptake abilities of these aluminas.

Abstract
Herein the sorption of Eu(III) and (243)Am(III) on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied, and the results show that Eu(III) and (243)Am(III) could form strong inner-sphere surface complexes on CNT surfaces. However, the sorption of Eu(III) on CNTs is stronger than that of (243)Am(III) on CNTs, suggesting the difference in the interaction mechanisms or properties of Eu(III) and (243)Am(III) with CNTs, which is quite different from the results of Eu(III) and (243)Am(III) interaction on natural clay minerals and oxides. On the basis of the results of density functional theory calculations, the binding energies of Eu(III) on CNTs are much higher than those of (243)Am(III) on CNTs, indicating that Eu(III) could form stronger complexes with the oxygen-containing functional groups of CNTs than (243)Am(III), which is in good agreement with the experimental results of higher sorption capacity of CNTs for Eu(III). The oxygen-containing functional groups contribute significantly to the uptake of Eu(III) and (243)Am(III), and the binding affinity increases in the order of ≡S-OH < ≡S-COOH < ≡S-COO(-). This paper highlights the interaction mechanism of Eu(III) and (243)Am(III) with different oxygen-containing functional groups of CNTs, which plays an important role for the potential application of CNTs in the preconcentration, removal, and separation of trivalent lanthanides and actinides in environmental pollution cleanup.

Abstract
The adsorption of naphthalene on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in presence of Paecilomyces cateniannulatus (P. cateniannulatus) was conducted by the batch techniques. The morphology and nanostructure of GO were characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, and Raman. The adsorption kinetics indicated that the adsorption of naphthalene on GO and GO + P. catenlannulatus can be satisfactorily fitted pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. P. catenlannulatus inhibited the adsorption of naphthalene on GO at pH<4.0, whereas the increased adsorption was observed at pH>4.0. The adsorption of naphthalene on GO and GO + P. catenlannulatus can be better fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich model, respectively. The change in the conformation of GO was responsible to the increased adsorption of naphthalene by SEM and TEM images. According to FTIR analysis, naphthalene was absorbed by the oxygen-containing functional groups of GO, especially for –COOH. The finding in the study provides the implication for the preconcentration and removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environment cleanup applications.

Abstract
Herein, we report the in situ polymerization of 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (15DAN) and 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone (14DAA) on the surface of reduced graphite oxide (RGO). Synthesized RGO-P15DAN and RGO-P14DAA were characterized by FTIR, Raman, SEM, TGA and XRD. The adsorption capacity and adsorptivity of the synthesized composites were investigated by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) using 100 ppm aqueous solution of Pb(2+) ions. Further, we compared the results of the composites with those of poly 1,5-(diaminonaphthalene) (P15DAN), poly 1,4-(diaminoanthraquinone) (P14DAA), RGO, graphite oxide (GO) and graphite. Among the tested adsorbents, RGO-P15DAN demonstrated the high adsorptivity.
