Synthesis and Characterization of 1H-Imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic Acid-Functionalized Silver Nanoparticles: Dual Colorimetric Sensors of Zn2+ and Homocysteine

A colorimetric assay has been developed for Zn²⁺ and homocysteine (Hcy) detection using functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs have been synthesized using silver nitrate, where sodium citrate is used as a stabilizing agent and NaBH₄ as a reducing agent. Then, the nanoparticles (citrate@AgNPs) were functionalized with 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (IDCA). UV-visible and FTIR spectra suggested that IDCA was functionalized on the surface of citrate@AgNPs through the N atom of the imidazole ring. The IDCA-functionalized silver nanoparticles (IDCA@AgNPs) simultaneously detected Zn²⁺ and Hcy from aqueous solution and showed different responses to the two analytes (Zn²⁺ and Hcy) based on the aggregation-induced color change of IDCA@AgNPs. They showed the color change from yellow to red, which was easily discriminated by visual inspection as well as UV-visible spectroscopy. The surface plasmon resonance absorbance values of Zn²⁺ and Hcy are 485 and 512 nm, respectively, when Zn²⁺ and Hcy react with IDCA@AgNPs. IDCA@AgNPs showed linearity with Zn²⁺ and Hcy concentrations, with the detection limit of 2.38 μM and 0.54 nM, respectively (S/N = 3). The IDCA@AgNPs showed excellent selectivity toward Zn²⁺ and Hcy compared to the different metal ions and amino acids, respectively. Optimal detection was achieved toward Zn²⁺ and Hcy in the pH range 3-10. In addition, IDCA@AgNPs were used to detect Zn²⁺ and Hcy from lake water, showing low interference.

Chemical Cross-Linking of Anatase Nanoparticle Thin Films for Enhanced Mechanical Properties

Titania nanoparticle-based thin films are highly attractive for a vast range of commercial applications. Although their application on polymer-based substrates is particularly appealing, the requirement of low process temperatures results in low mechanical stability. Highly crystalline anatase nanoparticles were used as the building blocks for coatings through a two-stage process. The main benefits of this method, over the more common sol-gel ones, are the relatively low temperature required for the production of metal oxide coatings, allowing the use of polymer-based substrates, and the defined crystallinity of the resulting thin films. Although in several cases moderate temperatures can be utilized for drying the films, the mechanical stability of the respective coatings remains a critical issue. In this contribution, we present a strategy to achieve network formation between TiO₂ nanoparticles in a preformed thin film on the basis of the cross-linking of the functionalized nanoparticles. In the first stage, the nanoparticles were functionalized by dicarboxylic acids, concurrently leading to a stable colloidal dispersion that could be utilized for dip-coating to obtain TiO₂ thin films with high homogeneity and optical transparence. During the second stage, the films were immersed in a solution of a diamine as the linker molecule, to achieve cross-linking between the nanoparticles within the film. It is demonstrated that indeed covalent bonding was realized and functional coatings with significantly enhanced mechanical properties were obtained by our strategy.

High spatial resolution mapping of individual and collective localized surface plasmon resonance modes of silver nanoparticle aggregates: correlation to optical measurements

Non-isolated nanoparticles show a plasmonic response that is governed by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) collective modes created by the nanoparticle aggregates. The individual and collective LSPR modes of silver nanoparticle aggregated by covalent binding by means of bifunctional molecular linkers are described in this study. Individual contributions to the collective modes are investigated at nanometer scale by means of energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy and compared to ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. It is found that the aspect ratio and the shape of the clusters are the two main contributors to the low-energy collective modes.

Tailoring Plasmon Coupling in Self-Assembled One-Dimensional Au Nanoparticle Chains through Simultaneous Control of Size and Gap Separation

We investigated the near- and far-field response of one-dimensional chains of Au nanoparticles (NPs) fabricated with high structural control through template guided self-assembly. We demonstrate that the density of polyethylene glycol (PEG) ligands grafted onto the NP surface, in combination with the buffer conditions, facilitate a systematic variation of the average gap width (g) at short separations of g<1.1nm. The overall size (n) of the cluster was controlled through the template. The ability to independently vary n and g allowed for a rational tuning of the spectral response in individual NP clusters over a broad spectral range. We used this structural control for a systematic investigation of the electromagnetic coupling underlying the superradiant cluster mode. Independent of the chain length, plasmon coupling is dominated by direct neighbor interactions. A decrease in coupling strength at separations ≲0.5nm indicates the presence of non-local and/or quantum mechanical coupling mechanisms.
