Electrocavitation in nanofluidics: unique phenomenon and fundamental platform

In this paper, we will highlight one phenomenon unique to nanofluidics: electrocavitation. Electrocavitation is defined as cavitation induced by electric fields. Cavitation in general occurs in a liquid when it is subjected to a pressure below its vapor pressure, where the liquid can break apart and form a cavity (bubble). This is frequently seen in macroscale systems, for example, rotating propeller blades on the turbines of ships or water columns in the xylem of trees. Electrocavitation in nanochannels was first reported when researchers applied electric fields within nanochannels containing electrolytes discontinuous in conductivity and found that bubbles formed within the channel. The reasons to highlight electrocavitation to both the lab-on-a-chip community and those interested in the fundamental understanding of cavitation in general are detailed below.

Isotachophoresis with emulsions

An experimental study on isotachophoresis (ITP) in which an emulsion is used as leading electrolyte (LE) is reported. The study aims at giving an overview about the transport and flow phenomena occurring in that context. Generally, it is observed that the oil droplets initially dispersed in the LE are collected at the ITP transition zone and advected along with it. The detailed behavior at the transition zone depends on whether or not surfactants (polyvinylpyrrolidon, PVP) are added to the electrolytes. In a system without surfactants, coalescence is observed between the droplets collected at the ITP transition zone. After having achieved a certain size, the droplets merge with the channel walls, leaving an oil film behind. In systems with PVP, coalescence is largely suppressed and no merging of droplets with the channel walls is observed. Instead, at the ITP transition zone, a droplet agglomerate of increasing size is formed. In the initial stages of the ITP experiments, two counter rotating vortices are formed inside the terminating electrolyte. The vortex formation is qualitatively explained based on a hydrodynamic instability triggered by fluctuations of the number density of oil droplets.

CE-MS for metabolomics: developments and applications in the period 2010-2012

CE-MS has emerged as a powerful technique for the profiling of (highly) polar and charged metabolites in biological samples. This review provides an update of the most recent developments in CE-MS for metabolomics covering the scientific literature from July 2010 to June 2012. The present paper is an update of two previous review papers covering the years 2000-2010 (Electrophoresis 2009, 30, 276-291; Electrophoresis 2011, 32, 52-65). Emerging technological developments used in CE-MS for metabolomics are discussed, such as the use of novel interfacing techniques for coupling CE to MS. Representative examples illustrate the applicability of CE-MS in the fields of biomedical, clinical, microbial, plant, environmental and food metabolomics. Concerning targeted and non-targeted approaches, a comprehensive overview of recent CE-MS-based metabolomics studies is given in a table. Information on sample type and pretreatment, capillary coatings and MS detection mode is provided. Finally, general conclusions and perspectives are provided.
