Abstract
A core-substituted naphthalene diimide (1) was self-assembled with (Et3P)2Pt·2TfO into a triangular structure (2) whereas an equilibrium mixture of triangular and dimer or tetramer was obtained with Pd(dppp)·2TfO and Pt(dppp)·2TfO. The triangular structure for 2 was supported theoretically by PM6 calculations and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Complex 2, as compared to 1, shows a variable UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence as a function of solvent and is easily reducible during cyclic voltammetry. TEM and AFM imaging showed that 2 further self-assembles into nanostructures.

Abstract
Naphthalenediimides (NDIs) have been extensively studied due to their tunable luminescent properties. However, generally, the monomers or aggregates of non-core substituted NDIs exhibit low fluorescence quantum yields (ΦFL <10 %) in the solid state, which limit their applications as light-emitting materials and render their chiral species unsuitable for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Herein, a series of non-core substituted chiral NDIs that exhibit high luminous efficiencies (ΦFL up to 56.8 % for racemate and 36.5 % for enantiomer) and a strong CPL behavior in the solid state is reported. These significant improvements are attributed to the unique molecular conformation of the chiral NDIs and the formation of distinctive discrete dimers. The structures of the NDIs were significantly simpler and more accessible than those of other NDIs. The findings evidence that non-core substituted NDIs can exhibit strong fluorescence in the solid state and provide a new pathway to improve photophysical properties of NDIs.

Abstract
Pyrene is a fluorescent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and it would be interesting to determine whether its C═N-based conjugate can be used for sensing of aromatic analytes at its supramolecular aggregated state. For this purpose, we have synthesized (E)-3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)-N'-(pyren-1-ylmethylene)benzohydrazide (Py@B) by alkylation, substitution, and the Schiff base reaction methodology. The E-isomer of Py@B (E-Py@B) exhibits a bright fluorescence due to excimer formation in nonaromatic solvents. Upon photoirradiation with λ = 254 nm, it exhibits E-Z isomerization across the C═N bond at a low concentration (10-4 M), resulting in a quenched fluorescence intensity, and interestingly, upon photoirradiation with λ = 365 nm, the Z-isomer of Py@B returns to the E-isomer again, indicating that E-Z isomerization of Py@B is reversible in nature. The thick supramolecular aggregated morphology of E-Py@B changes to a flowery needlelike morphology after photoirradiation with λ = 254 nm. The UV-vis absorption band at 370 nm for 10-4 M Py@B in methyl cyclohexane (MCH) is due to excimer formation for closer proximity of pyrene moieties present in E-Py@B and changes to the absorption peak at 344 nm for its Z-isomer formation. The fluorescence spectroscopy results also support the fact that the optimum concentration of the E-isomer of Py@B is 2 × 10-4 M in MCH for excimer formation. From spectral results, it may be concluded that nonaromatic solvents assist in constructing the excimer, but aromatic solvents resist forming an excimer complex of E-Py@B. The fluorescent emission of E-Py@B in MCH is quickly quenched on addition of different aromatic analytes through both static and dynamic pathways. In the solid state, E-Py@B also senses aromatic vapors efficiently via fluorescence quenching. Absorbance spectra of a model molecule obtained using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations on a DFT-optimized structure indicate complex adduct formation between E-Py@B and aromatic analytes from the well-matched theoretical and experimental UV-vis spectra on addition of different analytes with E-Py@B.

Abstract
Fast, simple in use and highly effective voltammetric enantiosensor dedicated for determination of thalidomide (TD) enantiomers (especially towards the toxic (S)-enantiomer) in blood plasma is still desirable. Here we have proven that newly synthesized chiral naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivatives are excellent electroactive materials for TD enantiosensors. The recognition process relies on the specific interaction between the chiral NDI receptor and the thalidomide enantiomer of the opposite configuration. This unique specific interaction between (S)-thalidomide and (R)-NDI derivative counterparts, evident in the DPV voltammograms, was confirmed by molecular modeling. The demonstrated voltammetric enantiosensors are characterized by the low detection limit at the level of μg·L-1, wide analytical range from 5·10-4 - 10 mg·L-1, high selectivity and long lifetime. The results of the recovery rates showed a very good degree of accuracy towards the determination of (S)-thalidomide in the blood samples, so it can be successfully used in the analysis of clinical samples.

Abstract
A new molecular donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) triad, comprised of an electron deficient 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimide (NDI) unit covalently connected to two flanking photosensitizers, i.e., a bis-heteroleptic Ru(II) complex of 1,10-phenanthroline and pyridine triazole hybrid ligand, is described. The single crystal X-ray structure of the perchlorate salt of the triad demonstrates that the electron deficient NDI unit can act as a host for anions via anion-π interaction. Detailed solution-state studies indicate that fluoride selectively interacts with the D-A-D triad to form a dianionic NDI, NDI2-, via a radical anion, NDI•-. On the contrary, cyanide reduces the NDI moiety to NDI•-, as confirmed by UV-vis, NMR, and EPR spectroscopy. Further, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic studies reveal a low luminescence quantum yield of the D-A-D triad attributable to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process from the photoactive Ru(II) center to the NDI unit. Interestingly, the triad displays "OFF-ON" luminescence behavior in the presence of fluoride by restoring the Ru(II) to phenanthroline/pyridine-triazole-based MLCT emission, whereas cyanide fails to show a similar property due to a different redox process operational in the latter. The reduction of NDI in the presence of fluoride and cyanide in different polar solvents indicates that involvement of such deprotonated solvents in the electron transfer mechanism may not be operative in our present system. Low-temperature kinetic studies support the formation of a charge transfer associative transient species, which likely allows overcoming the thermodynamically uphill barrier for the direct electron transfer mechanism.

Abstract
The recycle, cleaning, and reuse of water are highly important for environmental remediation. This issue is addressed by creating a fluorescent zwitterionic spirocyclic Meisenheimer complex with high chelating propensity for toxic metals using low-cost starting materials and a one-pot synthesis technique. The resulting material is able to detect fluoride up to 12.8 ppb level and remove 82% aqueous fluoride from 1000 mL of 100 ppm fluoride solution in a single contact. The material demonstrates rapid kinetics and is capable of dropping the toxic metal ion (Pb/Hg/Cd) concentration below 0.2 ppb within 10 min. A resin-free, precipitation-free, and reusable technique has been developed for the removal of toxic metal ions and fluoride from extremely polluted water. Moreover, utilizing its extreme hydrophobicity, polystyrene sponges have been coated with the Meisenheimer complex to mop up oil spill and organic solvents from a biphasic mixture.

Single electron transfer-driven multi-dimensional signal read-out function of TCNQ as an "off-the-shelf" detector for cyanide. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2013; 5:6996-7000. Abstract
Herein we report the first applications of TCNQ as a rapid and highly sensitive off-the-shelf cyanide detector. As a proof-of-concept, we have applied a kinetically selective single-electron transfer (SET) from cyanide to deep-lying LUMO orbitals of TCNQ to generate a persistently stable radical anion (TCNQ(•-)), under ambient condition. In contrast to the known cyanide sensors that operate with limited signal outputs, TCNQ(•-) offers a unique multiple signaling platform. The signal readability is facilitated through multichannel absorption in the UV-vis-NIR region and scattering-based spectroscopic methods like Raman spectroscopy and hyper Rayleigh scattering techniques. Particularly notable is the application of the intense 840 nm NIR absorption band to detect cyanide. This can be useful for avoiding background interference in the UV-vis region predominant in biological samples. We also demonstrate the fabrication of a practical electronic device with TCNQ as a detector. The device generates multiorder enhancement in current with cyanide because of the formation of the conductive TCNQ(•-).
