The glass phase in the grain boundary of Na3Zr2Si2PO12, created by gallium modulation

Na3Zr2Si2PO12 has been proven to be a promising electrolyte for solid-state sodium batteries. However, its poor conductivity prevents application, caused by the large ionic resistance created by the grain boundary. Herein, we propose an additional glass phase (Na-Ga-Si-P-O phase) to connect the grain boundary via Ga ion introduction, resulting in enhanced sodium-ion conduction and electrochemical performance. The optimized Na3Zr2Si2PO12-0.15Ga electrolyte exhibits Na+ conductivity of 1.65 mS cm-1 at room temperature and a low activation energy of 0.16 eV, with 20% newly formed glass phase enclosing the grain boundary. Temperature-dependent NMR line shapes and spin-lattice relaxation were used to estimate the Na self-diffusion and Na ion hopping. The dense glass-ceramic electrolyte design strategy and the structure-dynamics-property correlation from NMR, can be extended to the optimization of other materials.

Unraveling Sodium-Ion Dynamics in Honeycomb-Layered Na2MgxZn2-xTeO6 Solid Electrolytes with Solid-State NMR

All-solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have the potential to offer large-scale, safe, cost-effective, and sustainable energy storage solutions by supplementing the industry-leading lithium-ion batteries. However, for the enhanced bulk properties of SIB components (e.g., solid electrolytes), a comprehensive understanding of their atomic-scale structure and the dynamic behavior of sodium (Na) ions is essential. Here, we utilize a robust multinuclear (23Na, 125Te, 25Mg, and 67Zn) magnetic resonance approach to explore a novel Mg/Zn homogeneously mixed-cation honeycomb-layered oxide Na2MgxZn2-xTeO6 solid solution series. These new intermediate compounds exhibit tailorable bulk Na-ion conductivity (σ) with the highest σ = 0.14 × 10-4 S cm-1 for Na2MgZnTeO6 at room temperature suitable for SIB solid electrolyte applications as observed by powder electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A combination of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) reveals highly crystalline phase-pure compounds in the P6322 space group. We show that the Mg/Zn disorder is random within the honeycomb layers using 125Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resolve multiple Na sites using two-dimensional (triple-quantum magic-angle spinning (3QMAS)) 23Na NMR. The medium-range disorder in the honeycomb layer is revealed through the combination of 25Mg and 67Zn NMR, complemented by electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, we expose very fast local Na-ion hopping processes (hopping rate, 1/τNMR = 0.83 × 109 Hz) by using a laser to achieve variable high-temperature (∼860 K) 23Na NMR, which are sensitive to different Mg/Zn ratios. The Na2MgZnTeO6 with maximum Mg/Zn disorder displays the highest short-range Na-ion dynamics among all of the solid solution members.

Toward Understanding of the Li-Ion Migration Pathways in the Lithium Aluminum Sulfides Li3AlS3 and Li4.3AlS3.3Cl0.7 via 6,7Li Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Li-containing materials providing fast ion transport pathways are fundamental in Li solid electrolytes and the future of all-solid-state batteries. Understanding these pathways, which usually benefit from structural disorder and cation/anion substitution, is paramount for further developments in next-generation Li solid electrolytes. Here, we exploit a range of variable temperature ⁶Li and ⁷Li nuclear magnetic resonance approaches to determine Li-ion mobility pathways, quantify Li-ion jump rates, and subsequently identify the limiting factors for Li-ion diffusion in Li₃AlS₃ and chlorine-doped analogue Li_4.3AlS_3.3Cl_0.7. Static ⁷Li NMR line narrowing spectra of Li₃AlS₃ show the existence of both mobile and immobile Li ions, with the latter limiting long-range translational ion diffusion, while in Li_4.3AlS_3.3Cl_0.7, a single type of fast-moving ion is present and responsible for the higher conductivity of this phase. ⁶Li-⁶Li exchange spectroscopy spectra of Li₃AlS₃ reveal that the slower moving ions hop between non-equivalent Li positions in different structural layers. The absence of the immobile ions in Li_4.3AlS_3.3Cl_0.7, as revealed from ⁷Li line narrowing experiments, suggests an increased rate of ion exchange between the layers in this phase compared with Li₃AlS₃. Detailed analysis of spin-lattice relaxation data allows extraction of Li-ion jump rates that are significantly increased for the doped material and identify Li mobility pathways in both materials to be three-dimensional. The identification of factors limiting long-range translational Li diffusion and understanding the effects of structural modification (such as anion substitution) on Li-ion mobility provide a framework for the further development of more highly conductive Li solid electrolytes.

Control of Ionic Conductivity by Lithium Distribution in Cubic Oxide Argyrodites Li6+xP1-xSixO5Cl

Argyrodite is a key structure type for ion-transporting materials. Oxide argyrodites are largely unexplored despite sulfide argyrodites being a leading family of solid-state lithium-ion conductors, in which the control of lithium distribution over a wide range of available sites strongly influences the conductivity. We present a new cubic Li-rich (>6 Li⁺ per formula unit) oxide argyrodite Li₇SiO₅Cl that crystallizes with an ordered cubic (P2₁3) structure at room temperature, undergoing a transition at 473 K to a Li⁺ site disordered F4̅3m structure, consistent with the symmetry adopted by superionic sulfide argyrodites. Four different Li⁺ sites are occupied in Li₇SiO₅Cl (T5, T5a, T3, and T4), the combination of which is previously unreported for Li-containing argyrodites. The disordered F4̅3m structure is stabilized to room temperature via substitution of Si⁴⁺ with P⁵⁺ in Li_6+xP_1-xSi_xO₅Cl (0.3 < x < 0.85) solid solution. The resulting delocalization of Li⁺ sites leads to a maximum ionic conductivity of 1.82(1) × 10^-6 S cm^-1 at x = 0.75, which is 3 orders of magnitude higher than the conductivities reported previously for oxide argyrodites. The variation of ionic conductivity with composition in Li_6+xP_1-xSi_xO₅Cl is directly connected to structural changes occurring within the Li⁺ sublattice. These materials present superior atmospheric stability over analogous sulfide argyrodites and are stable against Li metal. The ability to control the ionic conductivity through structure and composition emphasizes the advances that can be made with further research in the open field of oxide argyrodites.

Opening Diffusion Pathways through Site Disorder: The Interplay of Local Structure and Ion Dynamics in the Solid Electrolyte Li6+xP1–xGexS5I as Probed by Neutron Diffraction and NMR

Solid electrolytes are at the heart of future energy storage systems. Li-bearing argyrodites are frontrunners in terms of Li⁺ ion conductivity. Although many studies have investigated the effect of elemental substitution on ionic conductivity, we still do not fully understand the various origins leading to improved ion dynamics. Here, Li_6+xP_1–xGe_xS₅I served as an application-oriented model system to study the effect of cation substitution (P⁵⁺ vs Ge⁴⁺) on Li⁺ ion dynamics. While Li₆PS₅I is a rather poor ionic conductor (10^–6 S cm^–1, 298 K), the Ge-containing samples show specific conductivities on the order of 10^–2 S cm^–1 (330 K). Replacing P⁵⁺ with Ge⁴⁺ not only causes S^2–/I^– anion site disorder but also reveals via neutron diffraction that the Li⁺ ions do occupy several originally empty sites between the Li rich cages in the argyrodite framework. Here, we used ⁷Li and ³¹P NMR to show that this Li⁺ site disorder has a tremendous effect on both local ion dynamics and long-range Li⁺ transport. For the Ge-rich samples, NMR revealed several new Li⁺ exchange processes, which are to be characterized by rather low activation barriers (0.1–0.3 eV). Consequently, in samples with high Ge-contents, the Li⁺ ions have access to an interconnected network of pathways allowing for rapid exchange processes between the Li cages. By (i) relating the changes of the crystal structure and (ii) measuring the dynamic features as a function of length scale, we were able to rationalize the microscopic origins of fast, long-range ion transport in this class of electrolytes.

Extremely Fast Interfacial Li Ion Dynamics in Crystalline LiTFSI Combined with EMIM-TFSI

Materials providing fast transport pathways for ionic charge carriers are at the heart of future all-solid state batteries that completely rely on sustainable, nonflammable solid electrolytes. The mobile ions in fast ion conductors may take benefit from structural disorder, cation and anion substitution, or dimensionality effects. While these effects concern the bulk regions of a given material, one may also manipulate the surface or interfacial regions of a polycrystalline poorly conducting electrolyte to enhance its transport properties. Here, we used ⁷Li NMR to characterize interfacial effects in crystalline lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) to which a small amount of ionic liquid EMIM-TFSI (EMIM: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation, C₆H₁₁N₂ ⁺) was added. We recorded longitudinal spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) curves M _z (t _d) that directly mirror the ⁷Li spin-fluctuations controlled by motional processes in such ionic-liquids-in-salt composites. Already at room temperature we observe strongly bimodal buildup curves M _z (t _d) leading to two distinct SLR rates differing by a factor of 100. While the slower rate does exactly reflect the temperature behavior expected for poorly conducting LiTFSI, the faster rate mirrors rapid motional processes that are governed by an activation energy as low as 73 meV. We attribute these fast processes to highly mobile Li⁺ ions in or near the contact area of crystalline LiTFSI and EMIM-TFSI. By using a method that characterizes motional processes from the atomic-scale point of view, we emphasize the importance of interfacial regions as reservoirs for fast Li⁺ ions in such solid composite electrolytes.

Site preferences and ion dynamics in lithium chalcohalide solid solutions with argyrodite structure: II. Multinuclear solid state NMR of the systems Li6PS5−x Se x Cl and Li6PS5−x Se x Br

A comprehensive multinuclear (7Li, 31P, 35Cl, 77Se, 79Br) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study has been conducted to characterize local structural configurations and atomic distributions in the crystallographically disordered solid solutions of composition Li6PS5−x Se x X (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, X = Cl, Br) with the Argyrodite structure. In contrast to the situation with the corresponding iodide homologs, there is no structural ordering between the 4a and 4c sites, with the halide ions occupying both of them with close to statistical probabilities. Nevertheless, throughout the composition range, the 16e Wyckoff sites of the Argyrodite structure are exclusively occupied by the chalcogen atoms, forming PY4 3− (Y = S, Se) tetrahedra, indicating the absence of P-halogen bonds. 31P magic-angle spinning (MAS)-NMR can serve to differentiate between the various possible PS4−n Se n 3− tetrahedral units in a quantitative fashion. Compared to the case of the anion-ordered Li6PS5−x Se x I solid solutions, the preference of P–S over P–Se bonding is significantly stronger, but it is weaker than in the halide free solid solutions Li7PS6−x Se x . Each individual PS4−n Se n 3− tetrahedron is represented by a peak cluster of up to five resonances, representing the five different configurations in which the PY4 3− ions are surrounded by the four closest chalcogenide and halide anions occupying the 4c sites; this distribution is close to statistical and can be used to deduce deviations of sample compositions from ideal stoichiometry. Non-linear 7Li chemical shift trends as a function of x are interpreted to indicate that the Coulombic traps created by sulfur-rich PS4−n Se n 3− ions (n ≤ 2) within the energy landscape of the lithium ions are deeper than those of the other anionic species present (i.e., selenium-richer PY4 3− tetrahedra, isolated chalcogenide or iodide ions), causing the Li+ ions to spend on average more time near them. Temperature dependent static 7Li NMR linewidths indicate higher mobility in the present systems than in the previously studied Li6PS5−x Se x I solid solutions. Unlike the situation in Li6PS5−x Se x I no rate distinction between intra-cage and inter-cage ionic motion is evident. Lithium ionic mobility increases with increasing selenium content. This effect can be attributed to the influences of higher anionic polarizability and a widening of the lithium ion migration pathways caused by lattice expansion. The results offer interesting new insights into the structure/ionic mobility correlations in this new class of compounds.

Fuzzy logic: about the origins of fast ion dynamics in crystalline solids

Nuclear magnetic resonance offers a wide range of tools to analyse ionic jump processes in crystalline and amorphous solids. Both high-resolution and time-domain [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] NMR helps throw light on the origins of rapid self-diffusion in materials being relevant for energy storage. It is well accepted that [Formula: see text] ions are subjected to extremely slow exchange processes in compounds with strong site preferences. The loss of this site preference may lead to rapid cation diffusion, as is also well known for glassy materials. Further examples that benefit from this effect include, e.g. cation-mixed, high-entropy fluorides [Formula: see text], Li-bearing garnets ([Formula: see text]) and thiophosphates such as [Formula: see text]. In non-equilibrium phases site disorder, polyhedra distortions, strain and the various types of defects will affect both the activation energy and the corresponding attempt frequencies. Whereas in [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) cation mixing influences F anion dynamics, in [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) the potential landscape can be manipulated by anion site disorder. On the other hand, in the mixed conductor [Formula: see text] cation-cation repulsions immediately lead to a boost in [Formula: see text] diffusivity at the early stages of chemical lithiation. Finally, rapid diffusion is also expected for materials that are able to guide the ions along (macroscopic) pathways with confined (or low-dimensional) dimensions, as is the case in layer-structured [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text]. A comprehensive multinuclear (7Li, 31P, 75As, 77Se, 127I) NMR study has been conducted to characterize local structural configurations and atomic distributions in the crystallographically ordered solid solutions of composition Li6PS5-x Se x I (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) and in Li6AsS5I. Throughout the composition range, structural ordering between the atoms on the Wyckoff sites 4a and 4c is maintained, with the I− ions exclusively occupying the 4a sites. 31P magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) can serve to differentiate between the various possible PS4-n Se n 3− tetrahedral units in a quantitative fashion, indicating a preference of P-S relative to P-Se bonding. Each individual PS4-n Se n 3− tetrahedron is represented by a peak cluster containing up to five resonances, representing the five different configurations in which the PCh4 3− units are surrounded by the four closest chalcogenide anions occupying the 4c sites; the distribution of S2− and Se2− over these sites is close to statistical. Non-linear 7Li chemical shift trends as a function of x are interpreted to indicate that the Coulombic traps created by sulfur-rich PS4-n Se n 3− ions (n ≥ 2) within the energy landscape of the lithium ions are deeper than those of the other anionic species present (i.e. selenium-richer PCh4 3− tetrahedra, isolated chalcogenide or iodide ions), causing the Li+ ions to spend on average more time near them. Temperature dependent static 7Li NMR linewidths measured on Li6PS5I and Li6AsS5I indicate a two-step motional narrowing process characterized by a clear dynamic distinction between a more rapid localized intra-cage process and a slower, long-range inter-cage process. In the solid solutions this differentiation gradually disappears, leading to an overall increase of lithium ionic mobility with increasing selenium content, which can be attributed to the influences of higher anionic polarizability and a widening of the lithium migration pathways caused by lattice expansion. Furthermore, the low-temperature phase transition in Li6PS5I, which tends to immobilize the lithium ions below 170 K, is suppressed in the solid solutions. The results offer interesting new insights into the -structure/ionic mobility correlations in this new class of compounds.

With a Little Help from 31P NMR: The Complete Picture on Localized and Long-Range Li+ Diffusion in Li6PS5I

Li₆PS₅I acts as a perfect model substance to study length scale-dependent diffusion parameters in an ordered matrix. It provides Li-rich cages which offer rapid but localized Li⁺ translational jump processes. As jumps between these cages are assumed to be much less frequent, long-range ion transport is sluggish, resulting in ionic conductivities in the order of 10^-6 S cm^-1 at room temperature. In contrast, the site disordered analogues Li₆PS₅X (X = Br, Cl) are known as fast ion conductors because structural disorder facilities intercage dynamics. As yet, the two extremely distinct jump processes in Li₆PS₅I have not been visualized separately. Here, we used a combination of ³¹P and ⁷Li NMR relaxation measurements to probe this bimodal dynamic behavior, that is, ultrafast intracage Li⁺ hopping and the much slower Li⁺ intercage exchange process. While the first is to be characterized by an activation energy of ca. 0.2 eV as directly measured by ⁷Li NMR, the latter is best observed by ³¹P NMR and follows the Arrhenius law determined by 0.44 eV. This activation energy perfectly agrees with that seen by direct current conductivity spectroscopy being sensitive to long-range ion transport for which the intercage jumps are the rate limiting step. Moreover, quantitative agreement in terms of diffusion coefficients is also observed. The solid-state diffusion coefficient D _σ obtained from conductivity spectroscopy agrees very well with that from ³¹P NMR (D _NMR ≈ 4.6 × 10^-15 cm² s^-1). D _NMR was directly extracted from the pronounced diffusion-controlled ³¹P NMR spin-lock spin-lattice relaxation peak appearing at 366 K.

Tracking Ions the Direct Way: Long-Range Li+ Dynamics in the Thio-LISICON Family Li4MCh4 (M = Sn, Ge; Ch = S, Se) as Probed by 7Li NMR Relaxometry and 7Li Spin-Alignment Echo NMR

Solid electrolytes are key elements for next-generation energy storage systems. To design powerful electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, we need to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that are at the heart of the rapid ion exchange processes in solids. Such an understanding also requires evaluation and testing of methods not routinely used to characterize ion conductors. Here, the ternary Li₄MCh₄ system (M = Ge, Sn; Ch = Se, S) provides model compounds to study the applicability of ⁷Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-alignment echo (SAE) spectroscopy to probe slow Li⁺ exchange processes. Whereas the exact interpretation of conventional spin-lattice relaxation data depends on models, SAE NMR offers a model-independent, direct access to motional correlation rates. Indeed, the jump rates and activation energies deduced from time-domain relaxometry data perfectly agree with results from ⁷Li SAE NMR. In particular, long-range Li⁺ diffusion in polycrystalline Li₄SnS₄ as seen by NMR in a dynamic range covering 6 orders of magnitude is determined by an activation energy of E _a = 0.55 eV and a pre-exponential factor of 3 × 10¹³ s^-1. The variation in E _a and 1/τ₀ is related to the LiCh₄ volume that changes within the four Li₄MCh₄ compounds studied. The corresponding volume of Li₄SnS₄ seems to be close to optimum for Li⁺ diffusivity.

Rapid Low-Dimensional Li+ Ion Hopping Processes in Synthetic Hectorite-Type Li0.5[Mg2.5Li0.5]Si4O10F2

Understanding the origins of fast ion transport in solids is important to develop new ionic conductors for batteries and sensors. Nature offers a rich assortment of rather inspiring structures to elucidate these origins. In particular, layer-structured materials are prone to show facile Li+ transport along their inner surfaces. Here, synthetic hectorite-type Li0.5[Mg2.5Li0.5]Si4O10F2, being a phyllosilicate, served as a model substance to investigate Li+ translational ion dynamics by both broadband conductivity spectroscopy and diffusion-induced 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-lattice relaxation experiments. It turned out that conductivity spectroscopy, electric modulus data, and NMR are indeed able to detect a rapid 2D Li+ exchange process governed by an activation energy as low as 0.35 eV. At room temperature, the bulk conductivity turned out to be in the order of 0.1 mS cm-1. Thus, the silicate represents a promising starting point for further improvements by crystal chemical engineering. To the best of our knowledge, such a high Li+ ionic conductivity has not been observed for any silicate yet.

Understanding the Origin of Enhanced Li-Ion Transport in Nanocrystalline Argyrodite-Type Li6PS5I

Argyrodite-type Li₆PS₅X (X = Cl, Br) compounds are considered to act as powerful ionic conductors in next-generation all-solid-state lithium batteries. In contrast to Li₆PS₅Br and Li₆PS₅Cl compounds showing ionic conductivities on the order of several mS cm^-1, the iodine compound Li₆PS₅I turned out to be a poor ionic conductor. This difference has been explained by anion site disorder in Li₆PS₅Br and Li₆PS₅Cl leading to facile through-going, that is, long-range ion transport. In the structurally ordered compound, Li₆PS₅I, long-range ion transport is, however, interrupted because the important intercage Li jump-diffusion pathway, enabling the ions to diffuse over long distances, is characterized by higher activation energy than that in the sibling compounds. Here, we introduced structural disorder in the iodide by soft mechanical treatment and took advantage of a high-energy planetary mill to prepare nanocrystalline Li₆PS₅I. A milling time of only 120 min turned out to be sufficient to boost ionic conductivity by 2 orders of magnitude, reaching σ_total = 0.5 × 10^-3 S cm^-1. We followed this noticeable increase in ionic conductivity by broad-band conductivity spectroscopy and ⁷Li nuclear magnetic relaxation. X-ray powder diffraction and high-resolution ⁶Li, ³¹P MAS NMR helped characterize structural changes and the extent of disorder introduced. Changes in attempt frequency, activation entropy, and charge carrier concentration seem to be responsible for this increase.

Lithium ion dynamics in LiZr2(PO4)3 and Li1.4Ca0.2Zr1.8(PO4)3

High ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability and small interfacial resistances against Li metal anodes are the main requirements to be fulfilled in powerful, next-generation all-solid-state batteries. Understanding ion transport in materials with sufficiently high chemical and electrochemical stability, such as rhombohedral LiZr2(PO4)3, is important to further improve their properties with respect to translational Li ion dynamics. Here, we used broadband impedance spectroscopy to analyze the electrical responses of LiZr2(PO4)3 and Ca-stabilized Li1.4Ca0.2Zr1.8(PO4)3 that were prepared following a solid-state synthesis route. We investigated the influence of the starting materials, either ZrO2 and Zr(CH3COO)4, on the final properties of the products and studied Li ion dynamics in the crystalline grains and across grain boundary (g.b.) regions. The Ca2+ content has only little effect on bulk properties (4.2 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 298 K, 0.41 eV), but, fortunately, the g.b. resistance decreased by 2 orders of magnitude. Whereas, 7Li spin-alignment echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) confirmed long-range ion transport as seen by conductivity spectroscopy, 7Li NMR spin-lattice relaxation revealed much smaller activation energies (0.18 eV) and points to rapid localized Li jump processes. The diffusion-induced rate peak, appearing at T = 282 K, shows Li+ exchange processes with rates of ca. 109 s-1 corresponding, formally, to ionic conductivities in the order of 10-3 S cm-1 to 10-2 S cm-1.

Substitutional disorder: structure and ion dynamics of the argyrodites Li6PS5Cl, Li6PS5Br and Li6PS5I

Li NMR spectroscopy reveals rapid Li ion dynamics in the poor Li ion conductor Li₆PS₅I; long-range motion is, however, only possible for Li₆PS₅Br and Li₆PS₅Cl with anion site disorder.

High magnesium mobility in ternary spinel chalcogenides

Magnesium batteries appear a viable alternative to overcome the safety and energy density limitations faced by current lithium-ion technology. The development of a competitive magnesium battery is plagued by the existing notion of poor magnesium mobility in solids. Here we demonstrate by using ab initio calculations, nuclear magnetic resonance, and impedance spectroscopy measurements that substantial magnesium ion mobility can indeed be achieved in close-packed frameworks (~ 0.01–0.1 mS cm^–1 at 298 K), specifically in the magnesium scandium selenide spinel. Our theoretical predictions also indicate that high magnesium ion mobility is possible in other chalcogenide spinels, opening the door for the realization of other magnesium solid ionic conductors and the eventual development of an all-solid-state magnesium battery.

Low magnesium mobility in solids represents a significant obstacle to the development of Mg intercalation batteries. Here the authors show that substantial magnesium ion mobility can be achieved in close-packed ternary selenide spinel materials.

Crystal Structure of Garnet-Related Li-Ion Conductor Li7-3x Ga x La3Zr2O12: Fast Li-Ion Conduction Caused by a Different Cubic Modification?

Li-oxide garnets such as Li₇La₃Zr₂O₁₂ (LLZO) are among the most promising candidates for solid-state electrolytes to be used in next-generation Li-ion batteries. The garnet-structured cubic modification of LLZO, showing space group Ia-3d, has to be stabilized with supervalent cations. LLZO stabilized with Ga³⁺ shows superior properties compared to LLZO stabilized with similar cations; however, the reason for this behavior is still unknown. In this study, a comprehensive structural characterization of Ga-stabilized LLZO is performed by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Coarse-grained samples with crystal sizes of several hundred micrometers are obtained by solid-state reaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction results show that Li_7-3x Ga _x La₃Zr₂O₁₂ with x > 0.07 crystallizes in the acentric cubic space group I-43d. This is the first definite record of this cubic modification for LLZO materials and might explain the superior electrochemical performance of Ga-stabilized LLZO compared to its Al-stabilized counterpart. The phase transition seems to be caused by the site preference of Ga³⁺. ⁷Li NMR spectroscopy indicates an additional Li-ion diffusion process for LLZO with space group I-43d compared to space group Ia-3d. Despite all efforts undertaken to reveal structure-property relationships for this class of materials, this study highlights the potential for new discoveries.

NMR Observation of Mobile Protons in Proton-Implanted ZnO Nanorods

The diffusion properties of H(+) in ZnO nanorods are investigated before and after 20 MeV proton beam irradiation by using (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Herein, we unambiguously observe that the implanted protons occupy thermally unstable site of ZnO, giving rise to a narrow NMR line at 4.1 ppm. The activation barrier of the implanted protons was found to be 0.46 eV by means of the rotating-frame spin-lattice relaxation measurements, apparently being interstitial hydrogens. High-energy beam irradiation also leads to correlated jump diffusion of the surface hydroxyl group of multiple lines at ~1 ppm, implying the presence of structural disorder at the ZnO surface.

Fast Li ion dynamics in the solid electrolyte Li7 P3 S11 as probed by (6,7) Li NMR spin-lattice relaxation

The development of safe and long-lasting all-solid-state batteries with high energy density requires a thorough characterization of ion dynamics in solid electrolytes. Commonly, conductivity spectroscopy is used to study ion transport; much less frequently, however, atomic-scale methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are employed. Here, we studied long-range as well as short-range Li ion dynamics in the glass-ceramic Li7 P3 S11 . Li(+) diffusivity was probed by using a combination of different NMR techniques; the results are compared with those obtained from electrical conductivity measurements. Our NMR relaxometry data clearly reveal a very high Li(+) diffusivity, which is reflected in a so-called diffusion-induced (6) Li NMR spin-lattice relaxation peak showing up at temperatures as low as 313 K. At this temperature, the mean residence time between two successful Li jumps is in the order of 3×10(8) s(-1) , which corresponds to a Li(+) ion conductivity in the order of 10(-4) to 10(-3) S cm(-1) . Such a value is in perfect agreement with expectations for the crystalline but metastable glass ceramic Li7 P3 S11 . In contrast to conductivity measurements, NMR analysis reveals a range of activation energies with values ranging from 0.17 to 0.26 eV, characterizing Li diffusivity in the bulk. In our case, through-going Li ion transport, when probed by using macroscopic conductivity spectroscopy, however, seems to be influenced by blocking grain boundaries including, for example, amorphous regions surrounding the Li7 P3 S11 crystallites. As a result of this, long-range ion transport as seen by impedance spectroscopy is governed by an activation energy of approximately 0.38 eV. The findings emphasize how surface and grain boundary effects can drastically affect long-range ionic conduction. If we are to succeed in solid-state battery technology, such effects have to be brought under control by, for example, sophisticated densification or through the preparation of samples that are free of any amorphous regions that block fast ion transport.

Correlated fluorine diffusion and ionic conduction in the nanocrystalline F(-) solid electrolyte Ba(0.6)La(0.4)F(2.4)-(19)F T1(ρ) NMR relaxation vs. conductivity measurements

Chemical reactions induced by mechanical treatment may give access to new compounds whose properties are governed by chemical metastability, defects introduced and the size effects present. Their interplay may lead to nanocrystalline ceramics with enhanced transport properties being useful to act as solid electrolytes. Here, the introduction of large amounts of La into the cubic structure of BaF2 served as such an example. The ion transport properties in terms of dc-conductivity values of the F(-) anion conductor Ba1-xLaxF2+x (here with x = 0.4) considerably exceed those of pure, nanocrystalline BaF2. So far, there is only little knowledge about activation energies and jump rates of the elementary hopping processes. Here, we took advantage of both impedance spectroscopy and (19)F NMR relaxometry to get to the bottom of ion jump diffusion proceeding on short-range and long-range length scales in Ba0.6La0.4F2.4. While macroscopic transport is governed by an activation energy of 0.55 to 0.59 eV, the elementary steps of hopping seen by NMR are characterised by much smaller activation energies. Fortunately, we were able to deduce an F(-) self-diffusion coefficient by the application of spin-locking NMR relaxometry.

Li ion dynamics along the inner surfaces of layer-structured 2H-LixNbS2

Layer-structured materials, such as graphite (LiCy) or Lix(Co,Ni,Mn)O2, are important electrode materials in current battery research that still relies on insertion materials. This is due to their excellent ability to reversibly accommodate small alkali ions such as Li(+) and Na(+). Despite of these applications, microscopic information on Li ion self-diffusion in transition metal sulfides are relatively rare. Here, we used (7)Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to study translational Li ion diffusion in hexagonal (2H) LixNbS2 (x = 0.3, 0.7, and 1) by means of variable-temperature NMR relaxometry. (7)Li spin-lattice relaxation rates and (7)Li NMR spectra were used to determine Li jump rates and activation barriers as a function of Li content. Hereby, NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates recorded with the spin-lock technique offered the possibility to study Li ion dynamics on both the short-range and long-range length scale. Information was extracted from complete diffusion-induced rate peaks that are obtained when the relaxation rate is plotted vs inverse temperature. The peak maximum of the three samples studied shifts toward higher temperatures with increasing Li content x in 2H-LixNbS2. Information on the dimensionality of the diffusion process was experimentally obtained by frequency dependent Rρ measurements carried out at T = 444 K, that is in the high-temperature regime of the rate peaks. A slight, but measurable frequency-dependence within this limit is found for all samples; it is in good agreement with predictions from relaxation models developed to approximate low-dimensional (2D) jump diffusion.
