Influence of the electronic structures on the heterogeneous photoelectrocatalytic performance of Ti/RuxSn1-xO2 electrodes

DSA-type Ti/Ru_xSn_1-xO₂ electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition method as photoelectrocatalysts (PECs) and extensively characterized by various sophisticated techniques. First-principles calculations was employed to study the effects of Ru content on the electronic structures of the Ru_xSn_1-xO₂ coatings. The photoelectric-synergistic catalytic activity of the Ti/Ru_xSn_1-xO₂ electrodes was evaluated for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution. The results show that the RuO₂-SnO₂ solid solution could be formed. The band gaps of the Ru_xSn_1-xO₂ coatings gradually decreased and eventually turned into metallic conductivity with the increase of ruthenium content. As a PEC electrode, reducing band gap is helpful to improve electronic conductivity and the electrocatalytic activity, but not always advantageous to increase the photocatalytic activity. Because too narrow band gap will sacrifice the photogenerated charge carriers and thus reduce photocatalytic activity of the electrode. In our experiments, the rate constant of Ti/Ru_0.05Sn_0.95O₂ electrode increased with increasing Ru content and exhibited the maximum rate for 5% Ru loading. The stability test showed the photoelectrocatalytic activity of the Ti/Ru_0.05Sn_0.95O₂ electrode almost had no attenuation after 100h photoelectrolysis, revealing that this electrode has good long-term stability.

The Stability Challenges of Oxygen Evolving Catalysts: Towards a Common Fundamental Understanding and Mitigation of Catalyst Degradation

This Review addresses the technical challenges, scientific basis, recent progress, and outlook with respect to the stability and degradation of catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) operating at electrolyzer anodes in acidic environments with an emphasis on ion exchange membrane applications. First, the term "catalyst stability" is clarified, as well as current performance targets, major catalyst degradation mechanisms, and their mitigation strategies. Suitable in situ experimental methods are then evaluated to give insight into catalyst degradation and possible pathways to tune OER catalyst stability. Finally, the importance of identifying universal figures of merit for stability is highlighted, leading to a comprehensive accelerated lifetime test that could yield comparable performance data across different laboratories and catalyst types. The aim of this Review is to help disseminate and stress the important relationships between structure, composition, and stability of OER catalysts under different operating conditions.

Stability and spinodal decomposition of the solid-solution phase in the ruthenium-cerium-oxide electro-catalyst

The phase diagram of Ru-Ce-O was calculated by a combination of ab initio density functional theory and thermodynamic calculations. The phase diagram indicates that the solubility between ruthenium oxide and cerium oxide is very low at temperatures below 1100 K. Solid solution phases, if existing under normal experimental conditions, are metastable and subject to a quasi-spinodal decomposition to form a mixture of a Ru-rich rutile oxide phase and a Ce-rich fluorite oxide phase. To study the spinodal decomposition of Ru-Ce-O, Ru0.6Ce0.4O2 samples were prepared at 280 °C and 450 °C. XRD and in situ TEM characterization provide proof of the quasi-spinodal decomposition of Ru0.6Ce0.4O2. The present study provides a fundamental reference for the phase design of the Ru-Ce-O electro-catalyst.

Pt- and Ru-doped SnO₂-Sb anodes with high stability in alkaline medium

Different Pt- and Ru-doped Ti/SnO2-Sb electrodes were synthesized by thermal decomposition. The effect of the gradual substitution of Sb by Ru in the nominal composition on the physicochemical and electrochemical properties were evaluated. The electrochemical stability of the electrodes was estimated from accelerated tests at 0.5 A cm(-2) in 1 M NaOH. Both as-synthesized and deactivated electrodes were thoroughly characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The incorporation of a small amount (about 3 at. %) of both Pt and Ru into the SnO2-Sb electrodes produced a 400-times increase in their service life in alkaline medium, with no remarkable change in the electrocatalysis of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It is concluded that the deactivation of the electrodes is promoted by alkaline dissolution of metal species and coating detachment at high potentials. The introduction of Pt has a coating compacting effect, and Ru(IV), at low amounts until 9.75 at. %, replaces the Sn(IV) cations in the rutile-like SnO2 structure to form a solid solution that strongly increases the stability of the electrodes. The observed Ru segregation and decreased stability for larger Ru contents (x > 9.75 at. %), together with the selective dissolution of Ru after deactivation, suggest that the formation of a homogeneous (RuδSn1-δ)O2 single-phase is crucial for the stabilization of these electrodes.
