Photoinduced luminescent carbon nanostructures with ultra-broadly tailored size ranges

Time-Resolved Luminescence Properties of Laser-Fabricated Nano-diamonds

In the study, well-crystallized nano-diamonds with an average size of 3.8 nm are obtained via femtosecond laser ablation. Both steady-state and transient luminescence are observed. The luminescence peaks of nano-diamonds shift from 380 to 495 nm when the excitation wavelength changes from 280 to 420 nm. After passivation by polyethylene glycol-400N, the surface of nano-diamonds is significantly oxidized, which is verified by Raman and UV-Vis absorption spectra. Furthermore, there is no change in all the luminescence wavelengths, although the maximum intensity increases by 10 times. Time-resolved luminescence spectra reveal that trapping states can be modified by surface passivation, and this leads to stronger luminescence with a longer lifetime.

Direct synthesis of nanodiamonds by femtosecond laser irradiation of ethanol

Carbon nanomaterials exhibit novel characteristics including enhanced thermal, electrical, mechanical, and biological properties. Nanodiamonds; first discovered in meteorites are found to be biocompatible, non-toxic and have distinct optical properties. Here we show that nanodiamonds with the size of <5 nm are formed directly from ethanol via 1025 nm femtosecond laser irradiation. The absorption of laser energy by ethanol increased non-linearly above 100 μJ accompanied by a white light continuum arises from fs laser filamentation. At laser energy higher than 300 μJ, emission spectra of C, O and H in the plasma were detected, indicating the dissociation of C₂H₅OH. Nucleation of the carbon species in the confined plasma within the laser filaments leads to the formation of nanodiamonds. The energy dependence and the roles of the nonlinear phenomenon to the formation of homogeneous nanodiamonds are discussed. This work brings new possibility for bottom-up nanomaterials synthesis based on nano and ultrafast laser physics.

Laser-ablation production of graphene oxide nanostructures: from ribbons to quantum dots

A new one-step method for the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) nanostructures has been developed by pulsed laser ablation in GO solution. The formation of different shapes of GO nanostructures, such as ribbons, nanoflakes (including nano-squares, nano-rectangles, nano-triangles, nano-hexagons, and nano-disks) and quantum dots, has been demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Photoreduction for the GO occurred during irradiation by the pulsed laser. The GO quantum dots exhibit a blue photoluminescence, originating from recombination of the localized carriers in the zigzag-edge states.

Photochemical synthesis of doped graphene quantum dots and their photoluminescence in aqueous and solid states

A facile photochemical approach to prepare nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) has been presented.
