Research Progress in Enzyme Biofuel Cells Modified Using Nanomaterials and Their Implementation as Self-Powered Sensors

Enzyme biofuel cells (EBFCs) can convert chemical or biochemical energy in fuel into electrical energy, and therefore have received widespread attention. EBFCs have advantages that traditional fuel cells cannot match, such as a wide range of fuel sources, environmental friendliness, and mild reaction conditions. At present, research on EBFCs mainly focuses on two aspects: one is the use of nanomaterials with excellent properties to construct high-performance EBFCs, and the other is self-powered sensors based on EBFCs. This article reviews the applied nanomaterials based on the working principle of EBFCs, analyzes the design ideas of self-powered sensors based on enzyme biofuel cells, and looks forward to their future research directions and application prospects. This article also points out the key properties of nanomaterials in EBFCs, such as electronic conductivity, biocompatibility, and catalytic activity. And the research on EBFCs is classified according to different research goals, such as improving battery efficiency, expanding the fuel range, and achieving self-powered sensors.

Electrochemical SERS for in Situ Monitoring the Redox States of PEDOT and Its Potential Application in Oxidant Detection

In response to recent developments for applying conducting polymers on various biomedical applications, the development of characterization techniques for evaluating the states of conducting polymers in liquids is beneficial to the applications of these materials. In this study, we propose a platform using electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering (EC-SERS) technology, which allows a direct measurement of the redox states of conducing polymers in liquids. A thiophene-based conducting polymer, hydroxymethyl poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or poly(EDOT-OH), was used to demonstrate this concept. Poly(EDOT-OH) films were coated on Au nanoparticle-coated ITO glass as SERS-active substrates. Taking the advantage of Raman enhancement, we can in situ and clearly monitor the redox behavior of poly(EDOT-OH) in aqueous solutions. The Raman peak intensity decreases as the poly(EDOT-OH) film is oxidized. Furthermore, we demonstrated our idea to utilize this phenomenon as the sensing mechanism for oxidant detection. The Raman intensity of conducting polymers reduces faster when oxidants exist, and we obtain a quantitative analysis for the detection of oxidants. Moreover, the oxidized poly(EDOT-OH) films can be reused for detection of oxidants simply by applying a reduction potential to activate the poly(EDOT-OH) films. The film stability was also confirmed, and the detection of two other oxidants, namely ammonium persulfate and iron chloride, were also demonstrated. The results show different SERS spectra of poly(EDOT-OH) films oxidized by using different oxidants. Besides, the oxidized films can be easily recovered simply by applying a cathodic potential, which allows repeating usage and makes it possible for continuous monitoring applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to apply PEDOT's Raman feature for detection purposes.

Flow injection amperometric sandwich-type aptasensor for the determination of human leukemic lymphoblast cancer cells using MWCNTs-Pdnano/PTCA/aptamer as labeled aptamer for the signal amplification

In this research, we demonstrated a flow injection amperometric sandwich-type aptasensor for the determination of human leukemic lymphoblasts (CCRF-CEM) based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) decorated with gold nanoparticles (PEDOT-Au_nano) as a nano platform to immobilize thiolated sgc8c aptamer and multiwall carbon nanotubes decorated with palladium nanoparticles/3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (MWCNTs-Pd_nano/PTCA) to fabricate catalytic labeled aptamer. In the proposed sensing strategy, the CCRF-CEM cancer cells were sandwiched between immobilized sgc8c aptamer on PEDOT-Au_nano modified surface electrode and catalytic labeled sgc8c aptamer (MWCNTs-Pd_nano/PTCA/aptamer). After that, the concentration of CCRF-CEM cancer cells was determined in presence of 0.1 mM hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as an electroactive component. The attached MWCNTs-Pd_nano nanocomposites to CCRF-CEM cancer cells amplified the electrocatalytic reduction of H₂O₂ and improved the sensitivity of the sensor to CCRF-CEM cancer cells. The MWCNT-Pd_nano nanocomposite was characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to confirm the stepwise changes in the electrochemical surface properties of the electrode. The proposed sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor exhibited an excellent analytical performance for the detection of CCRF-CEM cancer cells ranging from 1.0 × 10¹ to 5.0 × 10⁵ cells mL^-1. The limit of detection was 8 cells mL^-1. The proposed aptasensor showed high selectivity toward CCRF-CEM cancer cells. The proposed aptasensor was also applied to the determination of CCRF-CEM cancer cells in human serum samples.

Utilization of hydroxypropyl carboxymethyl cellulose in synthesis of silver nanoparticles

Hydroxypropyl carboxymethyl cellulose samples having varying degrees of substitution and varying degrees of polymerization were used to reduce silver nitrate to silver nanoparticles. UV spectral analysis of silver nanoparticles colloidal solution reveal that increasing the pH of the reduction solution leads to improvement in the intensity of the absorption band for silver nanoparticles, to be maximum at pH 11. The absorption peak intensity also enhanced upon prolonging the reaction duration up to 60 min. The conversion of silver ions to metallic silver nanoparticles was found to be temperature-dependent and maximum transformation occurs at 60 °C. The reduction efficiency of hydroxypropyl carboxymethyl cellulose was found to be affected by its degree of polymerization. Colloidal solutions of silver nanoparticles having concentration up to 1000 ppm can be prepared upon fixing the ratio between silver nitrate and hydroxypropyl carboxymethyl cellulose at 0.017-0.3g per each 100ml of the reduction solution.
