Abstract
We report an H-bond donor controlled diastereoselective switchable intramolecular aza-Henry reaction of ketimines derived from α-ketoesters and 2-(2-nitroethyl)anilines, allowing facile access to chiral tetrahydroquinolines bearing an aza-quaternary carbon stereocenter, which are privileged scaffold for medicinal researches. While newly developed cinchona alkaloid derived phosphoramide-bearing quaternary ammonium salt C2 selectively give cis-adducts in up to 20 : 1 dr and 99 % ee, the corresponding urea-bearing analogue C8 preferentially give trans-adducts in up to 20 : 1 dr and 99 % ee.

Abstract
The asymmetric catalytic synthesis of 1,2-diamines has received considerable interest, especially in the last ten years, due to their presence in biologically active compounds and their applications for the development of synthetic building blocks, chiral ligands and organocatalysts. Synthetic strategies based on C-N bond-forming reactions involve mainly (a) ring opening of aziridines and azabenzonorbornadienes, (b) hydroamination of allylic amines, (c) hydroamination of enamines and (d) diamination of olefins. In the case of C-C bond-forming reactions are included (a) the aza-Mannich reaction of imino esters, imino nitriles, azlactones, isocyano acetates, and isothiocyanates with imines, (b) the aza-Henry reaction of nitroalkanes with imines, (c) imine-imine coupling reactions, and (d) reductive coupling of enamines with imines, and (e) [3+2] cycloaddition with imines. C-H bond forming reactions include hydrogenation of CN bonds and C-H amination reactions. Other catalytic methods include desymmetrization reactions of meso-diamines.

Abstract
The first enantioselective aza-Henry reaction of non-activated cyclic iminoesters, derived from cyclic amino acids, has been developed. Good yields and enantioselectivities were observed for the reaction using our original cinchona alkaloid sulfonamide/zinc(II) catalyst. The transition state was proposed to explain the stereoselectivity based on experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract
The chiral oxazoline motif is present in many ligands that have been extensively applied in a series of important metal-catalyzed enantioselective reactions. This Review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the most significant applications of oxazoline-containing ligands reported in the literature starting from 2009 until the end of 2018. The ligands are classified not by the reaction to which their metal complexes have been applied but by the nature of the denticity, chirality, and donor atoms involved. As a result, the continued development of ligand architectural design from mono(oxazolines), to bis(oxazolines), to tris(oxazolines) and tetra(oxazolines) and variations thereof can be more easily monitored by the reader. In addition, the key transition states of selected asymmetric transformations will be given to illustrate the features that give rise to high levels of asymmetric induction. As a further aid to the reader, we summarize the majority of schemes with representative examples that highlight the variation in % yields and % ees for carefully selected substrates. This Review should be of particular interest to the experts in the field but also serve as a useful starting point to new researchers in this area. It is hoped that this Review will stimulate both the development/design of new ligands and their applications in novel metal-catalyzed asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism and the enantioselectivity of the aza-Henry reaction of isatin-derived ketimine catalyzed by chiral guanidine–amide catalysts at the M06-2X-D3/6-311+G(d,p)//M06-2X-D3/6-31G(d,p) (toluene, SMD) theoretical level. The catalytic reaction occurred via a three-step mechanism: (i) the deprotonation of nitromethane by a chiral guanidine–amide catalyst; (ii) formation of C–C bonds; (iii) H-transfer from guanidine to ketimine, accompanied with the regeneration of the catalyst. A dual activation model was proposed, in which the protonated guanidine activated the nitronate, and the amide moiety simultaneously interacted with the ketimine substrate by intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The repulsion of CPh3 group in guanidine as well as N-Boc group in ketimine raised the Pauli repulsion energy (∆EPauli) and the strain energy (∆Estrain) of reacting species in the unfavorable si-face pathway, contributing to a high level of stereoselectivity. A new catalyst with cyclopropenimine and 1,2-diphenylethylcarbamoyl as well as sulfonamide substituent was designed. The strong basicity of cyclopropenimine moiety accelerated the activation of CH3NO2 by decreasing the energy barrier in the deprotonation step. The repulsion between the N-Boc group in ketimine and cyclohexyl group as well as chiral backbone in the new catalyst raised the energy barrier in C–C bond formation along the si-face attack pathway, leading to the formation of R-configuration product. A possible synthetic route for the new catalyst is also suggested.

Abstract
A series of chiral thiourea bearing multiple H-bond donors derived from hydroquinine has been reported. The aza-Henry reaction of isatin-derived ketimines and long-chain nitroalkanes catalyzed by these chiral thioureas can achieve high enantioselectivity (78-99% ee) and excellent diastereoselectivity (up to 99:1). This work is the first report on long-chain nitroalkanes as substrates with excellent diastereoselectivity in metal-free catalytic systems.

Abstract
Azacycles such as indoles and tetrahydroquinolines are privileged structures in drug development. Reported here is an unprecedented regiodivergent intramolecular nucleophilic addition reaction of imines as a flexible approach to access N-functionalized indoles and tetrahydroquinolines, by the control of reaction at the N-terminus and C-terminus, respectively. Using ketimines derived from 2-(2-nitroethyl)anilines with isatins or α-ketoesters, the regioselective N-attack reaction gives N-functionalized indoles, while the catalytic enantioselective C-attack reaction affords chiral tetrahydroquinolines featuring an α-tetrasubstituted stereocenter. Mechanistic studies reveal that hydrogen-bonding interactions may greatly facilitate such unusual N-attack reactions of imines. The utility of this protocol is highlighted by the catalytic enantioselective formal synthesis of (-)-psychotrimine, and the construction of various fused aza-heterocycles.

Abstract
The asymmetric aza-Henry reaction of N-Boc imines and nitroalkanes was realized in the presence of 10 mol % dinuclear zinc-AzePhenol catalysts under ambient conditions. A variety of nitroamines were obtained in good yields (up to 97%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) and high diasteroselectivity (up to 14:1 dr). Our protocol combined the operational simplicity and mild reaction conditions, thus making the process amenable for technical applications.

Abstract
The mechanism of the DABCO-catalyzed vinylogous Henry reaction of isatin with 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitroisoxazole and solvent effects on it have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) methods and QM/MM Monte Carlo (MC) simulation under "on-water" conditions as well as in methanol and THF solutions. The DFT calculations concluded that Path A, in which DABCO directly catalyzes the reaction of isatin 1a with 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitroisoxazole 2 in water, is the most favorable and the first step, the proton transfer process, is the rate-determining step for the reaction. For the roles of solvents in the reaction, QM/MM MC simulations using free energy perturbation theory and PDDG/PM3 as the QM method have been utilized to predict the free energy profiles. The results indicated that the QM/MM method reproduced well the large rate increases on-water. Solute-solvent energy pair distribution and radial distribution functions were also analyzed and illustrated that hydrogen bonding plays a significant role in stabilizing the transition structures. This work reveals the feasible reaction mechanisms and provides new insight into solvent effects for the DACBO-catalyzed vinylogous Henry reaction.

Abstract
A new class of chiral N-sulfonyl bisimidazoline (Bim) ligands have been designed, prepared, and applied in Pd(II)-catalyzed asymmetric addition of arylboronic acids to isatin-derived N-Boc ketimines. The combination of Pd(OCOCF3)2 and N-tosyl Bim ligand shows high catalytic activity and excellent asymmetric induction, enabling asymmetric addition to offer α-tertiary amines with generally good to high yields and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96% yield, 96% ee). This asymmetric Pd(II) catalysis can tolerate air conditions, providing a practical and operationally simple protocol toward the construction of an enantioenriched α-tertiary stereocenter.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the mechanism and the origin of the high enantioselectivity of the aza-Henry reaction of isatin-derived N-Boc ketimine catalyzed by a quinine-derived catalyst (QN). The C-C bond formation step is found to be both the rate-determining and the stereo-controlled step. The results revealed the important role of the phenolic OH group in pre-organizing the complex of nitromethane and QN and stabilizing the in situ-generated nitronate and protonated QN. Three possible activation modes for C-C bond formation involving different coordination patterns of catalyst and substrates were studied, and it was found that both the ion pair-hydrogen bonding mode and the Brønsted acid-hydrogen bonding mode are viable, with the latter slightly preferred for the real catalytic system. The calculated enantiomeric excess (ee) favouring the S enantiomer is in good agreement with the experimental result. The high reactivity and enantioselectivity can be ascribed to the cooperative role of the multiple non-covalent interactions, including classical and non-classical H bonding as well as anionπ interactions. These results also highlight the importance of the inclusion of dispersion correction for achieving a reasonable agreement between theory and experiment for the current reaction.

Abstract
A quinine-derived trifunctional sulphonamide catalyst has been developed for the effective asymmetric organocatalytic tandem aza-Henry reaction-cyclization of isatin-derived ketimines and nitroalkane-mesylates for the synthesis of spiro-pyrrolidine/piperidine-oxindoles. Demethylation of traditional bifunctional catalyst to incorporate an additional hydrogen bonding C6'-OH group plays the key role toward remarkable enantioselectivity.

Abstract
A novel bifunctional phase-transfer catalyst 1i was found to be highly efficient for the nitro-Mannich reaction of unactivated ketone-derived imines with the introduction of the protecting group 6-methyl-2-pyridylsulfonyl to the ketimines. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are also performed to give the possible transition-state model.
