Abstract
Electrophilic addition reaction to alkynes is of fundamental importance in organic chemistry, yet the regiocontrol when reacting with unsymmetrical 1,2-dialkyl substituted alkynes is often problematic. Herein, it is demonstrated that the rarely recognized β-boron effect can confer a high level of site-selectivity in several alkyne electrophilic addition reactions. A broad range of highly functionalized and complex organoborons are thus formed under simple reaction conditions starting from propargylic MIDA (N-methyliminodiacetic acid) boronates. These products are demonstrated to be valuable building blocks in organic synthesis. In addition to the regiocontrol, this study also observes a drastic rate enhancement upon B(MIDA) substitution. Theoretical calculation reveals that the highest occupied molecular obital (HOMO) energy level of propargylic B(MIDA) is significantly raised by 0.3 eV, and the preferential electrophilic addition to the γ position is due to its higher HOMO orbital coefficient and more negative natural bond orbital (NBO) charge compared to the β position. This study demonstrates the potential of utilizing the β-boron effect in stereoelectronic control of chemical transformations, which can inspire further research in this area.

Abstract
α-Boryl carbonyl species and α-boryl amino compounds are valuable and important frameworks in organic synthesis. However, the strategies that could merge the two scaffolds into one compound, named 1,1-carbonyl amino alkyl boron, are elusive and underdeveloped. Herein, we present an efficient method that could address this gap and produce 1,1-carbonyl amino alkyl borons from readily accessible indoles via oxidation by m-CPBA or oxone. This reaction features operational simplicity, divergent synthesis, broad substrate scope, and valuable products.

Abstract
α-Boryl ketones are traditionally challenging targets in organic synthesis. Reported herein is a mild and metal-free synthesis of α-boryl ketones via the hydration or oxidation of N-methyliminodiacetyl boronate (B(MIDA))-decorated alkynes. A new hydration system comprised of AcCl and H2O in HFIP allows the hydration of arylethynyl B(MIDA)s at room temperature with decent functional group tolerance. An oxidative carbon deletion process of propargylic B(MIDA)s is also developed for the synthesis of aliphatic α-boryl ketones. An intriguing β-boron effect was observed to account for the unique site- and chemoselectivities. The application of the products in the synthesis of borylated heterocycles was demonstrated.

Abstract
We report a combined experimental and computational study of Pd/Senphos-catalyzed carboboration of 1,3-enynes utilizing DFT calculations, 31P NMR study, kinetic study, Hammett analysis and Arrhenius/Eyring analysis. Our mechanistic study provides evidence against the conventional inner-sphere β-migratory insertion mechanism. Instead, a syn outer-sphere oxidative addition mechanism featuring a Pd-π-allyl intermediate followed by coordination-assisted rearrangements is consistent with all the experimental observations.

Abstract
A divergent radical borylation of vinyl azides with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) boranes in the presence of tBuSH is described. The protocol enables the divergent synthesis of α-boryl ketones and borylated triazoles with excellent functional group tolerance and a broad substrate scope. Remarkably, this work shows that vinyl azides can serve as unprecedented five-atom synthons for the construction of 1,2,3-triazoles without N2 extrusion.

Abstract
Metal-free boron Lewis acids, tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane B(C6F5)3, have the advantages of low toxicity and low cost and are a promising catalyst. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to clarify the mechanism and the origin of the diastereoselective cyclopropanation of aryldiazodiacetate and styrene derivatives catalyzed by B(C6F5)3. Four pathways were calculated: B(C6F5)3-catalyzed N-, C-, and O-bound boron-activated aryldiazodiacetate and without B(C6F5)3 catalysis. By calculating and comparing the energy barriers, the most possible reaction mechanism was proposed, that is, first, B(C6F5)3 catalyzed O-bound boron to activate aryldiazodiacetate, followed by the removal of a N2 molecule, and finally, styrene nucleophilic attack occurred to produce [2+1] cyclopropane products. N2 removal is the rate-limiting step, and this step determines the preference of a given mechanism. The calculated results are in agreement with experimental observations. The origin of diastereoselectivity is further explained on the basis of the favorable mechanism. The steric hindrance interference between the styrene aryl group and the large tri(pentafluorophenyl)borane B(C6F5)3 and the favorable π-π stacking interaction between the benzene rings combined to cause the high diastereoselectivity, which resulted in lower energy of the transition state (TS) corresponding to the reaction mechanism. The calculated results not only provide a more detailed explanation of the mechanism for the experimental study but also have certain reference and guiding significance for other catalytic cyclopropanation reactions.

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed mono-acylmethylation of pyridylcarboranes has been realized using α-carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides as a coupling partner. The reaction features high efficiency, excellent site-selectivity and good functional group tolerance. In the presence of pyridyl and enolizable acylmethyl groups, a post-coordination mode has been proposed and validated by in situ high resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS) to rationalize the unique mono-substitution. Post-functionalization at the newly incorporated alkyl site provides additional utility of this method, including the construction of carborane-fused indoliziniums and quinoliziniums. We believe that these mono-alkylated carboranes, together with their post-functionalized derivatives, may find applications in luminescent materials and drug discovery in the near future.

Abstract
A new family of carbon-bound boron enolates, generated by a kinetically controlled halogen exchange between chlorocatecholborane and silylketene acetals, is described. These C-boron enolates are demonstrated to activate 1,3-enyne substrates in the presence of a Pd0 /Senphos ligand complex, resulting in the first examples of a carboboration reaction of an alkyne with enolate-equivalent nucleophiles. Highly substituted dienyl boron building blocks are produced in excellent site-, regio-, and diastereoselectivity by the described catalytic cis-carboboration reaction.

Abstract
Construction of C-C bonds at the α-carbon is a challenging but synthetically indispensable approach to α-branched carbonyl motifs that are widely represented among drugs, natural products, and synthetic intermediates. Here, we describe a simple approach to generation of boron enolates in the absence of strong bases that allows for introduction of both α-alkyl and α-aryl groups in a reaction of readily accessible 1,2-dicarbonyls and organoboranes. Obviation of unselective, strongly basic and nucleophilic reagents permits carrying out the reaction in the presence of electrophiles that intercept the intermediate boron enolates, resulting in two new α-C-C bonds in a tricomponent process.

Abstract
An alkoxide-promoted method for the synthesis of ketones from readily available esters and benzyldiboronates is described. The synthetic method is compatible with a host of sterically differentiated alkyl groups, alkenes, acidic protons α to carbonyl groups, tertiary amides, and aryl rings having common organic functional groups. With esters bearing α-stereocenters, high enantiomeric excess was maintained during ketone formation, establishing minimal competing racemization by deprotonation. Monitoring the reaction between benzyldiboronate and LiOtBu in THF at 23 °C allowed for the identification of products arising from deborylation to form an α-boryl carbanion, deprotonation, and alkoxide addition to form an "-ate" complex. Addition of 4-trifluoromethylbenzoate to this mixture established the α-boryl carbanion as the intermediate responsible for C-C bond formation and ultimately ketone synthesis. Elucidation of the role of this intermediate leveraged additional bond-forming chemistry and enabled the one-pot synthesis of ketones with α-halogen atoms and quaternary centers with four-different carbon substituents.

Abstract
Multicomponent reaction of diazocarbonyl and dibenzenesulfonimide-SCF3 reagents with BAr4 salts in the presence of Zn(NTf2)2 gives α,α′-difunctionalized trifluoromethylthio compounds.
A new Zn-mediated trifluoromethylthiolation-based bifunctionalization reaction is developed. In this process, simultaneous C–SCF3 and C–C bond formation takes place in a multicomponent reaction, in which an aryl and a SCF3 group arise from different reagents. Our studies show that the reaction mechanism is similar to the Hooz multicomponent coupling. The process involves in situ generation of BAr3, which reacts with a diazocarbonyl compound, and the reaction is terminated by an electrophilic SCF3 transfer. The reaction can also be extended to fluorination based bifunctionalization which proceeds with somewhat lower yield than the analogous trifluoromethylthiolation reaction.

Abstract
Organoboron compounds are highly valuable in synthetic chemistry. In particular, α-borylcarbonyl compounds have shown versatile synthetic applications, owing to fruitful chemistries of both the boryl and carbonyl moieties. However, the synthesis of these molecules still remains tedious and time-consuming. Here we report a straightforward and practical route to synthesize α-borylcarbonyl molecules based on a regioselective radical α-borylation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The reaction features unusual α-regioselectivity and high functional-group compatibility. Further synthetic applications of new α-borylated products were also demonstrated. DFT and kinetic studies implicated that the α-regioselectivity of β-aryl-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds was determined by the thermodynamically more favorable radical α-addition step, whereas the formation of α-addition products from β-alkyl-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds was driven by an energetically favored hydrogen atom transfer step. Given that α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds can be easily obtained in abundance and variety, this method enjoys great advantages in diverse and economical synthesis of valuable α-borylcarbonyl molecules. α-Borylcarbonyl compounds are versatile synthons in organic synthesis, however their preparation is often tedious. Here, the authors report a regioselective radical α-borylation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to afford α-borylcarbonyl molecules with high selectivity and functional group compatibility.

Abstract
Useful α-boryl esters can be synthesized in one step from α,β-unsaturated esters using just a simple to access NHC-BH3 (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) and catalytic I2. The scope of this reductive α-borylation methodology is excellent and includes a range of alkyl, aryl substituted and cyclic and acyclic α,β-unsaturated esters. Mechanistic studies involving reductive borylation of a cyclic α,β-unsaturated ester with NHC-BD3/I2 indicated that concerted hydroboration of the alkene moiety in the α,β-unsaturated ester proceeds instead of a stepwise process involving initial 1,4-hydroboration; this is in contrast to the recently reported reductive α-silylation. The BH2(NHC) unit can be transformed into electrophilic BX2(NHC) moieties (X = halide) and the ester moiety can be reduced to the alcohol with the borane unit remaining intact to form β-boryl alcohols. The use of a chiral auxiliary, 8-phenylmenthyl ester, also enables effective stereo-control of the newly formed C-B bond. Combined two step ester reduction/borane oxidation forms diols, including excellent e.e. (97%) for the formation of S-3-phenylpropane-1,2-diol. This work represents a simple transition metal free route to form bench stable α-boryl esters from inexpensive starting materials.

Abstract
N-Propargyltetramethylpiperidine reacts with a series of trans-alkenyl-B(C6F5)2 compounds to give the substituted alkenyl-bridged frustrated N/B Lewis pairs 5. Their structures and spectroscopic features indicate a pronounced participation of the mesomeric s-trans-iminium/borata-alkene resonance form. The compounds are thought to be formed in a stepwise addition/rearrangement process which is initiated by a trans-1,2-amine/borane FLP addition to the carbon-carbon triple bond to generate a reactive zwitterionic aziridinium/alkenylborate intermediate. Subsequent alkenylborate attack leads to opening of the activated three-membered heterocycle with clean formation of the products 5a-c. Treatment of the propargyl-TMP substrate with B(C6F5)3 gave a stable example of such an aziridinium/borate betaine, which was isolated and amply characterized. The products 5a-c are active N/B FLPs. They split dihydrogen heterolytically under mild conditions to give the respective NH+/BH- products 9a-c. These contain Z-configurated core C═C double bonds, which indicates rotational equilibration around the central C-C bond of 5a-c during this reaction. Structural and chemical features of the 5c system were analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Regioselective α,α-difunctionalization adjacent to a ketone is a significant synthetic challenge. Here, we present a solution to this problem through the transition-metal-free coupling of esters with geminal bis(boron) compounds. This forms an α,α-bis(enolate) equivalent which can be trapped with electrophiles including alkyl halides and fluorinating agents. This presents an efficient, convergent synthetic strategy for the synthesis of unsymmetrical blocked ketones.

Abstract
Basic hydrolyses of various ligated α-boryl acetic acid esters provided the first ligated derivatives of the unknown compound boroacetic acid (BH2 CH2 CO2 H). Four monoacids (L-BH2 CH2 CO2 H) and one diacid (L-BH(CH2 CO2 H)2 ) were prepared with N-heterocyclic carbene, amine, and pyridine ligands (L). The stable acids were characterized by X-ray crystallography and acidity constant (pKa ) measurements. They rank among the least acidic of all known carboxylic acids. In turn, their conjugate bases are among the strongest of all carboxylates.

Abstract
Relative reactivities of a series of neutral ligated boranes L-BH3 (where L is NHC, amine, pyridine, or phosphine) and the cyanoborohydride anion have been assessed in Rh(II)-catalyzed B-H insertion reactions with methyl 2-phenyl-2-diazoacetate. Stable α-boryl ester products were isolated by flash chromatography in all cases except for the salt product from cyanoborohydride. All of the substrates were either comparable to or more reactive than 1,4-cyclohexadiene, which is one of the most reactive substrates in C-H insertion reactions. The range of reactivity between the most reactive pyridine-borane and the least reactive phosphine-borane is a factor of approximately 40.

Abstract
The use of α-boryl enamine and enamide linchpins in the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles has been demonstrated. Boryl enamines provide ready access to the corresponding α-halo aldehydes, which undergo regioselective annulation to form borylated thiazoles. A condensation/amidation sequence converts α-boryl aldehydes into stable α-boryl enamides without concomitant C → N migration. We also show that palladium-catalyzed cyclization of α-boryl enamides leads to synthetically versatile isoindolones. These molecules can be subsequently used to access polycyclic scaffolds.
