Optical forces in nanoplasmonic systems: how do they work, what can they be useful for?

Quantification and description of photothermal heating effects in plasmon-assisted electrochemistry

A growing number of reports have demonstrated plasmon-assisted electrochemical reactions, though debate exists around the mechanisms underlying the enhanced activity. Here we address the impact of plasmonic photothermal heating with cyclic voltammetry measurements and finite-element simulations. We find that plasmonic photothermal heating causes a reduction in the hysteresis of the anodic and cathodic waves of the voltammograms along with an increase in mass-transport limiting current density due to convection induced by a temperature gradient. At slow scan rates, a temperature difference as low as 1 K between the electrode surface and bulk electrolytic solution enhances the current density greater than 100%. Direct interband excitation of Au exclusively enhances current density by photothermal heating, while plasmon excitation leads to photothermal and nonthermal enhancements. Our study reveals the role of temperature gradients in plasmon-assisted electrochemistry and details a simple control experiment to account for photothermal heating.

Design considerations of gold nanoantenna dimers for plasmomechanical transduction

Internal optical forces emerging from plasmonic interactions in gold nanodisc, nanocube and nanobar dimers were studied by the finite element method. A direct correlation between the electric-field enhancement and optical forces was found by observing the largest magnitude of optical forces in nanocube dimers. Moreover, further amplification of optical forces was achieved by employing optical power of the excitation source. The strength of optical forces was observed to be governed by the magnitude of polarisation density on the nanoparticles, which can be varied by modifying the nanoparticle geometry and source wavelength. This study allows us to recognise that nanoparticle geometry along with the inter-dimer distance are the most prominent design considerations for optimising optical forces in plasmonic dimers. The findings facilitate the realisation of all-optical modulation in a plasmomechanical nanopillar system, which has promising applications in ultra-sensitive nanomechanical sensing and building reconfigurable metamaterials.

Optical-Force-Dominated Directional Reshaping of Au Nanodisks in Al-Au Heterodimers

The optical reshaping of metallic nanostructures typically requires intense laser pulses to first approach or achieve melting, followed by surface-tension-dominated reshaping, transforming the original nanostructures into more spherical morphologies. Here, we report the directional optical reshaping of the Au nanodisk of an Al-Au heterodimer in the illuminated junction of an atomic force microscope (AFM). Both the heightening and the repositioning of the Au nanodisk component are induced, reducing the gap between the two nanodisks. There are three contributors to this process: the photothermal softening of the Au lattice, the optical force applied to the Au nanodisk by the Al nanodisk, and the optical force from the nearby AFM tip. The asymmetric reshaping of the heterodimer is observable structurally, through electron microscopic imaging, and through changes in the heterodimer optical response. This optical-force-directed shape manipulation may have potential applications in nanofabrication, optically induced nanomanufacturing, sensing, and quality control.

Towards nano-optical tweezers with graphene plasmons: Numerical investigation of trapping 10-nm particles with mid-infrared light

Graphene plasmons are rapidly emerging as a versatile platform for manipulating light at the deep subwavelength scale. Here we show numerically that strong optical near-field forces can be generated under the illumination of mid-IR light when dielectric nanoparticles are located in the vicinity of a nanostructured graphene film. These near-field forces are attributed to the excitation of the graphene’s plasmonic mode. The optical forces can generate an efficient optical trapping potential for a 10-nm-diameter dielectric particle when the light intensity is only about about 4.4 mW/μm² and provide possibilities for a new type of plasmonic nano-tweezers. Graphene plasmonic tweezers can be potentially exploited for optical manipulation of nanometric biomolecules and particles. Moreover, the optical trapping/tweezing can be combined with biosensing and provide a versatile platform for studing biology and chemistry with mid-IR light.

Internal optical forces in plasmonic nanostructures

We present a computational study of the internal optical forces arising in plasmonic gap antennas, dolmen structures and split rings. We find that very strong internal forces perpendicular to the propagation direction appear in these systems. These internal forces show a rich behaviour with varying wavelength, incident polarisation and geometrical parameters, which we explain in terms of the polarisation charges induced on the structures. Various interesting and anomalous features arise such as lateral force reversal, optical pulling force, and circular polarisation-induced forces and torques along directions symmetry-forbidden for orthogonal linear polarisations. Understanding these effects and mastering internal forces in plasmonic nanostructures will be instrumental in implementing new functionalities in these nanophotonic systems.
