Abstract
Copper is an essential trace metal for biological processes in humans and animals. A low level of copper detection at physiological pH using fluorescent probes is very important for in vitro applications, such as the detection of copper in water or urine, and in vivo applications, such as tracking the dynamic copper concentrations inside cells. Copper homeostasis is disrupted in neurological diseases like Alzheimer's disease, and copper forms aggregates with amyloid beta (Ab42) peptide, resulting in senile plaques in Alzheimer's brains. Therefore, a selective copper detector probe that can detect amyloid beta peptide-copper aggregates and decrease the aggregate size has potential uses in medicine. We have developed a series of Cu2+-selective low fluorescent to high fluorescent tri and tetradentate dentate ligands and conjugated them with a peptide ligand to amyloid-beta binding peptide to increase the solubility of the compounds and make the resultant compounds bind to Cu2+-amyloid aggregates. The copper selective compounds were developed using chemical scaffolds known to have high affinity and selectivity for Cu2+, and their conjugates with peptides were tested for affinity and selectivity towards Cu2+. The test results were used to inform further improvement of the next compound. The final Cu2+ chelator-peptide conjugate we developed showed high selectivity for Cu2+ and high fluorescence properties. The compound bound 1:1 to Cu2+ ion, as determined from its Job's plot. Fluorescence of the ligand could be detected at nanomolar concentrations. The effect of this ligand on controlling Cu2+-Ab42 aggregation was studied using fluorescence assays and microscopy. It was found that the Cu2+-chelator-peptide conjugate efficiently reduced aggregate size and, therefore, acted as an inhibitor of Ab42-Cu2+ aggregation. Since high micromolar concentrations of Cu2+ are present in senile plaques, and Cu2+ accelerates the formation of toxic soluble aggregates of Ab42, which are precursors of insoluble plaques, the developed hybrid molecule can potentially serve as a therapeutic for Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Although transition metals constitute less than 0.1% of the total mass within a human body, they have a substantial impact on fundamental biological processes across all kingdoms of life. Indeed, these nutrients play crucial roles in the physiological functions of enzymes, with the redox properties of many of these metals being essential to their activity. At the same time, imbalances in transition metal pools can be detrimental to health. Modern analytical techniques are helping to illuminate the workings of metal homeostasis at a molecular and atomic level, their spatial localization in real time, and the implications of metal dysregulation in disease pathogenesis. Fluorescence microscopy has proven to be one of the most promising non-invasive methods for studying metal pools in biological samples. The accuracy and sensitivity of bioimaging experiments are predominantly determined by the fluorescent metal-responsive sensor, highlighting the importance of rational probe design for such measurements. This review covers activity- and binding-based fluorescent metal sensors that have been applied to cellular studies. We focus on the essential redox-active metals: iron, copper, manganese, cobalt, chromium, and nickel. We aim to encourage further targeted efforts in developing innovative approaches to understanding the biological chemistry of redox-active metals.

Abstract
In this context, we used the multicomponent Chichibabin pyridine synthesis reaction to synthesize a novel di(thiophen-2-yl) substituted and pyrene-pyridine fluorescent molecular hybrid. The computational (DFT and TD-DFT) and experimental investigations were performed to understand the photophysical properties of the synthesized new structural scaffold. The synthesized ligand displays highly selective fluorescent sensing properties towards Fe3+ ions when compared to other competitive metal ions (Al3+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Na+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Sr2+, Sn2+ and Zn2+). The photophysical properties studies reveal that the synthesized hybrid molecule has a binding constant of 2.30 × 103 M-1 with limit of detection (LOD) of 4.56 × 10-5 M (absorbance mode) and 5.84 × 10-5 M (emission mode) for Fe3+ ions. We believe that the synthesized pyrene-conjugated hybrid ligand can serve as a potential fluorescent chemosensor for the selective and specific detection of Fe3+ ions.

Abstract
In present work a pyrene-dansyl dyad functionalized chemoreceptor, DPNS is unveiled towards ultrasensitive chromo-fluorogenic detection of heavy and transition metal ions (HTMs) like Cu2+ and pernicious CN-. It demonstrated distinct chromogenic responses; colorless to faint yellow (Cu2+), intense yellow (CN-) from contaminant aqueous sources. Cu2+ instigated alteration in DPNS fluorescence from feeble emission to sparkling green with LOD: 37.75 × 10-9 M, cyan emission for CN- having LOD 61.51 × 10-8M. In particular, chemical scaffold of DPNS consists of -C = N, O = S = O donor entitities that escalates overall polarity thereby providing an excellent binding pocket for simultaneous Cu2+ and CN- recognition with distinct photophysical signaling. Impressively, presence of two fluorophoric moieties triggers FRET, CHEF phenomenon. The conceivable host:guest interactive pathway is manifested by LMCT- FRET-PET-CHEF, C = N isomerization for Cu2+ and ICT-H-bonding for CN-. An exquisite experimental and theoretical corroboration further strengthened the recognition phenomenon. In addition owing to pyrene excimer formation, DPNS exhibits AIEE with increasing water fraction. Notably, DPNS could successfully undergo intracellular tracking of Cu2+ in Tecoma Stans, Peperomia Pellucida. DPNS•••Cu2+ adduct displayed significant intercalative DNA binding activity rationalized by spectral investigation, competitive EB binding, viscosity study. The overall findings, excellent properties endows DPNS a potential contender towards discriminative detection of Cu2+ and CN- like toxic industrial contaminants.

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a commonly used antibiotic for the treatment of infectious diseases in humans and as a prophylactic agent in the livestock industry, leading to the environmental discharge of significant amounts of CIP. CIP is stable in aquatic systems leading to its pseudo-persistence. Constant exposure to these antibiotics results in the generation of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and potential toxicity/hypersensitivity in humans. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a convenient, rapid, and cost-effective method for the monitoring of ciprofloxacin in environmental samples. Rhodamine-based fluorescent receptors have the limitation of aqueous solubility. Therefore, in order to overcome this drawback, we designed a novel fluorescent receptor based on a zirconium-based metal organic framework (MOF-808). The precursor, MOF-808, was synthesized and functionalized by using sodium citrate to obtain a receptor called C-MOF-808. The C-MOF-808 was structurally characterized by XRD and spectroscopic analyses. Thus, this synthesized receptor can be used for the fluorescent detection of CIP in aqueous media with a detection limit of 9.4 µM. The detection phenomena of the receptor were studied by absorption as well as fluorescent spectra. The binding behavior of CIP with the receptor was studied by FT-IR and 1H-NMR analyses, and a binding mechanism is proposed.

Abstract
In this work, we report a facile receptor OMB [N',N"'-(3-((4-oxochroman-3-yl)methylene)pentane-2,4- diylidene)bis(4-methoxybenzohydrazide)] for the simultaneous detection of toxic analytes (Hg2+ and Cd2+ ions) in environment and biological samples. The receptor OMB exhibits an excellent selectivity and sensitivity which was determined using absorption and emission spectra. The receptor OMB shows rapid detection with lowest LOD (0.62 nM for Hg2+ ions and 0.77 nM for Cd2+ ions) and LOQ (2.08 nM for Hg2+ ions and 2.57 nM for Cd2+ ions) values. In addition, the receptor OMB exhibits 1:1 binding stoichiometry towards Hg2+ and Cd2+ ions with binding constant values of 5.5 × 106 M-1 and 4.6 × 106 M-1. Moreover, the synthesized receptor OMB possess ability to detect these analytes (Hg2+ and Cd2+ ions) in realistic samples (food and water) which was recognized using photoluminescence spectroscopy technique. In addition, the receptor OMB is also utilized to detect both the analytes in live HeLa cells. Thus, the overall results indicate that the receptor OMB was more suitable to detect the toxic analytes (Hg2+ and Cd2+ ions) present in the environment.

Abstract
Two cyanoimidazopyridine-based sensors (SS1 and SS2) were explored for the colorimetric and fluorometric detection of Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ ions in the semi-aqueous medium. The "turn-off" fluorescence response of both sensors to these ions was due to the restriction in internal charge transfer. Job's plot and semi-empirical calculations revealed that SS1 and SS2 complexed with Cu2+ ions in a 1:1 ratio and Fe2+/3+ ions in a 2:1 ratio, respectively. The sensors were found to have high binding constant (K a) values and low detection limit values. FMO analysis using the semi-empirical quantum mechanics method revealed the decrease in energy gap after complexation with metal ions. Sensor-coated filter paper strips were prepared and analyzed, where the color changes in the strips could be utilized for the real-time detection of Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ ions.

Abstract
A state-of-the-art method was developed for repurposing nitrone-containing compounds in the chemosensory field, the ability of the designed molecules to chelate metal cations was evaluated, and their unprecedented solubility in water was confirmed. A facile, rapid, and solvent-free method of synthesizing small molecular mass chemosensors was developed by using a modulative α-aryl-N-aryl nitrone template. α-(Z)-Imidazol-4-ylmethylen-N-phenyl nitrone (Nit1) and α-(Z)-2-pyridyl-N-phenyl nitrone (Nit2) were prepared in 15 min, isolated in less than 60 min with ca. 90% yield, and screened against nine metal cations. Nit1 is a small-molecular-mass compound (188 g mol-1) that is water-soluble and has specificity for sensing Cu2+ with an association constant of K = 1.53 × 1010 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 ppm. These properties make Nit1 a competitive chemosensor for the detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution. The nitrone-containing template used in this study is a step forward for new and small chemosensory entities.

Abstract
The interactions of G-quadruplexes of different topologies with highly fluorescent 9-methoxyluminarine ligand 9-MeLM were investigated by fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The results showed that 9-methoxyluminarine was able to interact and did not destabilize any investigated molecular targets. The studied compound was selectively quenched by parallel c-MYC G-quadruplex DNA, whereas hybrid and antiparallel G4 topology caused only a negligible decrease in the fluorescence of the ligand. A high decrease of fluorescence of the ligand after binding with c-MYC G-quadruplex suggests that this molecule can be used as a selective probe for parallel G-quadruplexes.

Abstract
We have designed and synthesized a novel pyrene-naphthalene sulphonyl conjugate, 1-((1Z)-(4-((Z)-4-(pyrene-1-yl)methyleneamino)phenylsulfonyl)phenylimino)methyl)naphthalene-2-ol (PSN) through a facile two-step reactions. It was characterized by various spectral techniques. Fluorescence spectral studies showed that compound PSN featured fluorescence enhancement upon increasing the water content in THF. This can be attributed to the phenomena of aggregated induced emission (AIE), which is confirmed by SEM and AFM studies, due to the restriction of CHN isomerization of PSN. The anion sensing of PSN was examined with various anions. Among these anions, H2PO4- and F- ions were selectively sensing with a low detection limit of 3.52 × 10-7 M and 7.23 × 10-7 M, respectively, and an obvious color change from yellow to orange was observed by the naked eye. The mechanism of sensing involved the formation of hydrogen bonding interaction between O-H group of PSN and H2PO4-/ F- ions. The binding of PSN with LYZ was also examined by docking studies, which shows that H-bonding and hydrophobic interactions play crucial roles for the interaction of LYZ toward PSN.

Abstract
A new BODIPY-based fluorescent probe (BC-DPA) was prepared by a simple method for Cu2+ detection in aqueous media and living cells. BC-DPA displayed excellent selectivity toward Cu2+via fluorescence "turn-off" mode when a mononuclear Cu(Ⅱ) complex is formed. The corresponding BC-DPA-Cu(Ⅱ) complex, whose structure was characterized by X-ray crystallography, has Cu(Ⅱ) in a distorted octahedral geometry. On the basis of the displacement approach, the fluorescence of BC-DPA-Cu2+ was recovered in the presence of S2-, which allowed the system to act as a sensitive "turn-on" sensor for hydrogen sulfide. Furthermore, BC-DPA exhibited noticeable permeability and low cytotoxicity, making it a useful tool to detect Cu2+ in biosystems.

Abstract
We report two isostructural dinuclear transition metal complexes [M2(HL)2(N3)4], where M = Ni2+ (BS-1), Mn2+ (BS-2), and HL is (2-methyl-2-((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)propan-1-ol) and investigate them as molecular sensors towards hazardous entities. BS-1 shows high selectivity towards the S2- and Ag+ ions, easily observed by the naked eye colour change and its detection limit in aqueous solutions for the S2- ion was calculated as 0.55 μM with a binding constant of 3.28 × 105 M-1, while the limit for the Ag+ ion is 21.8 μM. Notably, BS-2 shows good selectivity towards the Ag+ ion with a detection limit of 10.84 μM. Spectroscopic and DFT studies shed light on the mechanistic course of interaction between the host and guest entities, suggesting a sulphide-mediated reduction of the azide mechanism. In a nutshell, these simple transition metal complexes were exploited for discriminately detecting hazardous analytes with real field applications in analytical science (via. "Dip-Stick" approach) as well as engineering science, which provides a significant contribution in the recent advancement of supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
In this work, a hydrophilic naphthalimide-based fluorescence chemosensor (sensor 1) was synthesized for Cu2+ recognition, in which 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol was introduced to improve the hydrophily and Schiff base acted as the multidentate ligand for Cu2+. The effect factors, sensing mechanism and regenerability of sensor 1 for Cu2+ sensing were systematically investigated. It was found that sensor 1 displayed a long emission wavelength of 532 nm upon excited in visible light region (436 nm), and the good water solubility made it utilized in aqueous media. It could selectively react with Cu2+ over other common metal ions to form a 2:1 complex within 1 min and result in significant fluorescence quench. The fluorescence change was linear to 0.5-10.0 μmol L-1 of Cu2+ with a low detection limit of 3.74 × 10-8 mol L-1. Sensor 1 has been successfully utilized for analyzing Cu2+ in water samples as well as imaging cellular Cu2+. Moreover, in view of fluorescence "on-off-on" switches of sensor 1 induced by Cu2+ and EDTA, an IMPLICATION logic gate was constructed based on fluorescence mode with Cu2+ and EDTA as inputs.

Abstract
A novel fluoro-chromogenic rhodamine spirolactam probe (RP) has been prepared through the condensation of rhodamine hydrazine and 2-acetylpyridine, which displayed the detection of Cu2+ with high selectivity over a large number of other common metal ions. It shows a "turn-on" response to paramagnetic Cu2+ with an about 12-fold enhancement, and a color change from colorless to red that is observable by the naked eye. These changes are ascribed to the ring-opening of the spirolactam in RP, and subsequent host-guest coordination. The 2:1 binding stoichiometry of RP to Cu2+ was confirmed by Job's and B-H plots. The resulting fluorescence enhancement can be used to detect Cu2+ at concentrations from 2.0 to 20.0 μM with a limit of detection of 0.21 μM, which was lower than the maximum allowable Cu2+ level set by the WHO. Finally, RP has been utilized to monitor Cu2+ in living cells and natural water. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Abstract
A simple and coumarin-based fluorescence probe has been designed and synthesized with silyl group as recognition group of fluoride ions (F−) in this study. The results showed that the fluorescence intensity of the probe displayed prominent enhancement with addition of F− at 445 nm with incubation of 1 min. There was an excellent linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and fluoride concentration from 0 to 30 μM (0~0.57 ppm), which offered the important condition for the quantitative analysis. In addition, the highly selective response to fluorion, the low detection limit with 28 nM (0.532 ppb), low toxicity and bioimaging afforded an advantage for practical application and detecting fluoride in biological systerms.

Abstract
Herein, a red fluorescent and colorimetric probe (NDI-Py) based on naphthalene diimide was designed and synthesized, which exhibited rapid response, high sensitivity and selectivity towards copper ions, and the detection limit was as low as 0.97 μM in solution. Furthermore, NDI-Py demonstrated a strong red emission in the aggregated state because of its non-planar structure. Thus, it can act as a test strip to conveniently monitor copper ions with the detection limit as low as 2.0 μM. A red fluorescent and colorimetric probe (NDI-Py) exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity towards copper ions both in solution and on silica gel plates.![]()

Abstract
In this manuscript, a new colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor (T) was designed and synthesized, it could successively detect Cu2+ and H2PO4- in DMSO/H2O (v/v=9:1, pH=7.2) buffer solution with high selectivity and sensitivity. When added Cu2+ ions into the solution of T, it showed a color changes from yellow to colorless, meanwhile, the green fluorescence of sensor T quenched. This recognition behavior was not affected in the presence of other cations, including Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, and Mg2+ ions. More interestingly, the Cu2+ ions contain sensor T solution could recover the color and fluorescence upon the addition of H2PO4- anions in the same medium. And other surveyed anions (including F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO-, HSO4-, ClO4-, CN- and SCN-) had nearly no influence on the recognition behavior. The detection limits of T to Cu2+ and T-Cu2+ to H2PO4- were evaluated to be 1.609×10-8M and 0.994×10-7M, respectively. In addition, the sensor T also could be served as a recyclable component and the logic gate output was also defined in sensing materials. The test strips based on sensor T were fabricated, which acted as a convenient and efficient Cu2+ and H2PO4- test kits.

Abstract
A novel substituted pyrenoylpyrroles was synthesized by the reaction of pyrenoyl chalcone, TosMIC and methyl iodide under mild condition. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their bioactivity, and the MIC was determined, among which few compounds showed moderate antibacterial activity toward Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria. Further, cytotoxicity assay ascertained that these compounds were non-toxic to mammalian cells as well. The pyrene chromophore in the synthesized compounds (3a-e) and (5a-e) is responsible for the good photophysical properties which have an absorbance at λ 340 nm and emission at λ 410 nm. Hence, two of the selected novel synthesized compounds with non-cytotoxic nature prospected for bio-imaging of bacterial cells using high-content screening analysis show that the molecule is suitable for microbial imaging in pathological diagnostic studies.
