Tri-templating Synthesis of Multilevel Mesoporous Silica Microspheres with a Complex Interior Structure for Efficient CO2 Capture and Catalysis

Multilevel porous architectures with microscopic shape control and tailor-made complex structures offer great potential for various innovative applications, but their elaborate design and synthesis have remained a scientific and technological challenge. Herein, we report a simple and effective tri-templating method, in which microscale Pickering droplets, nanoscale polystyrene colloids (PS), and molecular cetyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles are synchronously employed, for the fabrication of such micro-nanohierarchical mesoporous silica microspheres. In this protocol, Pickering droplet-directed interfacial sol-gel growth and its spatially confined surfactant assembly-directed sol-gel coating on PS suspensions are coupled together, enabling the successful formation of structured mesoporous silica that consists of numerous nanocompartments enclosed by a permeable shell. By varying the quantity of PS colloidal templates, rational regulation of the complex interior structure is achieved. Also, ascribed to the multilevel arrangement, this peculiar architecture not only shows desirable fast mass transport of external molecules but also possesses easy handling ability. After loading with tetraethylenepentamine or enzyme species, the yielded microspherical CO₂ sorbents or immobilized biocatalysts, respectively, exhibit enhanced CO₂ capture capacity and enzymatic catalysis efficiency. Notably, taking advantage of their microscopic characteristics, the immobilized biocatalysts could be ideally packed in a fixed-bed reactor for long-term continuous-flow enzymatic reactions. This tri-templating strategy provides a new synthetic route to access other multilevel microscopic materials with fascinating complex structures and paves a way to promote their practical applications.

Interface Dominated Dielectric Response of PS-Fe3O4 Patchy Microspheres

Polymeric-inorganic interface plays a vital role in enhancing dielectric properties of patchy microspheres, Janus particles, and nanocomposites. We performed the computational modeling and simulations along with experiments to understand the phenomena behind the improved dielectric permittivity of polystyrene-iron oxide (PS-Fe₃O₄) patchy microspheres. We addressed the fundamental insights into the role of the interfacial region on the dielectric properties. Based on the experimental outcomes and computational simulations on dielectric behavior including polarization and electric field formation, we propose a new mechanism of charge buildup at the interface. Computational results reveal that the creation of interface bound-charges at the inorganic-polymeric interface is responsible for the improved dielectric properties. We also fabricated PS-Fe₃O₄ patchy microspheres by Pickering emulsion polymerization using Fe₃O₄ particles as a solid stabilizer. The microstructure, composition, morphology, dielectric, and thermal properties of the synthesized patchy PS-Fe₃O₄ particles were investigated. The dielectric permittivity (k) of the neat PS increased from ∼2.9 to ∼14.8 after decorating with Fe₃O₄ particles. Impedance response of the patchy microspheres shows that the interface of PS-Fe₃O₄ stores more charges than bulk PS-Fe₃O₄. The dielectric behavior of patchy microspheres can be engineered by tuning the shape and position of the patches. The present studies on polymer-inorganic interface provide some insights into the mechanisms that control dielectric permittivity and nonlinear conduction in an applied electric field.

Surface Grafting Polyphosphoesters on Cellulose Nanocrystals To Improve the Emulsification Efficacy

Particle-stabilized emulsion systems have been developed to address the problematic properties of conventional surfactants. However, the nature and properties of the fine particles used in such systems remain a critical issue for stability enhancement. Herein, we describe a thermoswitchable oil-in-water (O/W) particle-stabilized emulsion that exhibits improved stability due to the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) modified with poly[2-isopropoxy-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane] (PIPP), which exhibits relatively good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Various parameters, such as surface activity, concentration of particles, polarity of solvents, and temperatures, on the formation of emulsions with CNCs grafted with PIPP (CNC-g-PIPP) were investigated. Results showed that the surface activity of CNC-g-PIPP was significantly improved compared with the unmodified material. Heptane-in-water particle-stabilized emulsions with CNC-g-PIPP were stably formed, and the effect of temperature on the stability of the emulsions was characterized. CNC-g-PIPP exhibited function as an effective particulate emulsifier at 4 °C because of the strong adsorption at the oil-water interface. However, the emulsions rapidly disintegrated at 45 °C, which is above the low critical solution temperature of PIPP on CNC, as the hydrophobized CNC-g-PIPP desorbed from the oil-water interface. Based on these findings, a thermally induced reversible emulsification/demulsification was presented. The resulting switchable particle-stabilized emulsion based on CNC-g-PIPP shows promise for the ability to control the stability of an emulsion in response to temperature, which is attractive for use in biological applications.

Celebrating Soft Matter's 10th anniversary: stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsion polymerized smart fluids

The Pickering emulsion process is an important and interesting way of forming hybrid soft matter particles stabilized by solid particles as surfactants instead of the extensive use of conventionally available organic surfactant molecules. This Highlight briefly reviews stimuli-responsive polymer/inorganic hybrid materials fabricated by Pickering emulsion polymerization along with the rheological characteristics of their electrorheological and magnetorheological smart fluids under electric and magnetic fields, respectively.

Synthesis of magnetic Fe3O4/polyamine hybrid microsphere using O/W/O Pickering emulsion droplet as the polymerization micro-reactor

An O/W/O emulsion containing Fe₃O₄NPs and PEI was obtained using SM-CaCO₃NPs as the stabilizer. In a droplet-to-droplet reaction mode, a magnetic polyamine microsphere was achieved by crosslinking PEI in the emulsion droplet with glutaraldehyde.
