A review of hybrid enzymatic-chemical treatment for wastewater containing antiepileptic drugs

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide and requires treatment with antiepileptic drugs for many years or for life. This fact leads to the need for constant production and use of these compounds, placing them among the four pharmaceutical classes most found in wastewater. Even at low concentrations, antiepileptics pose risks to human and environmental health and are considered organic contaminants of emerging concern. Conventional treatments have shown low removal of these drugs, requiring advanced and innovative approaches. In this context, this review covers the results and perspectives on (1) consumption and occurrence of antiepileptics in water, (2) toxicological effects in aquatic ecosystems, (3) enzymatic and advanced oxidation processes for degrading antiepileptics drugs from a molecular point of view (biochemical and chemical phenomena), (4) improvements in treatment efficiency by hybridization, and (5) technical aspects of the enzymatic-AOP reactors.

Recent advances in electroanalytical methods for the therapeutic monitoring of antiepileptic drugs: A comprehensive review

Frequency of seizures is often managed by a wide group of antiepileptic drugs. Regarding the pharmacokinetic variability, narrow targeted range, and difficulty of detecting signs of toxicity based on laboratory responses, therapeutic monitoring of antiepileptic drugs can play a pivotal role in optimizing the drug dosage. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors can facilitate analysis of these drugs due to their unique advantages such as fast analysis, sensitivity, selectivity, and low cost. This review article, for the first time, describes the recent advances in electrochemical sensors and biosensors developed for the analysis of antiepileptic drugs. General electrochemical measuring techniques and types of applied electrode substrates were described first. To simplify the work, various chemical and biological modifiers applied to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensors were classified and explained briefly. Finally, the future prospective on the development of electrochemical platforms in the quantification of antiepileptic drugs will be presented.

Levetiracetam

A comprehensive profile of levetiracetam is presented in this chapter which includes its description, formula, elemental analysis, appearance, uses and applications. Different earlier studies included for example methods of synthesis are described with its typical structural schemes. The profile also listed the drug's physical characteristics indicating its solubility, X-ray powder diffraction pattern, thermal methods of analysis as well as its spectroscopic characteristics. Different methods of analysis which includes compendial method of analysis, as well as reported method of analysis which include spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, electrochemical method, chromatographic method, and immunoassay method of analysis. The study was include drug stability, clinical pharmacology, e.g., mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic study. Around 70 references are recorded as a proof of this chapter.

Impedimetric genosensor for ultratrace detection of hepatitis B virus DNA in patient samples assisted by zeolites and MWCNT nano-composites

Nanocrystals of zeolites (Nanocrys Zeo) and Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) based diagnostic genosensor was employed for detection of polymerase chain (PCR) amplified HBVDNA in blood of hepatitis B patients. The ssDNA-nanocomposite modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The hybridization between ss DNA probe and target ss DNA was detected by reduction in current, generated by interaction of methylene blue (MB) with free guanine (3'G) of ssDNA. Nanocrys zeo were deposited on the Fluorine doped tin oxide glass electrode (FTO) by drop-casting method for better immobilization of ss DNA while MWCNTs are incorporated into the zeolite-assembly to enhance the electro-conductivity of the present genosensor. The ssDNA-nanocomposite modified FTO electrode exhibited optimum current within 5s, at pH 5.6, and incubation temperature of 45°C. The value of charge transfer resistance (Rct) was linear with the number of copies of target DNA between 150 and 10(6) copies/ml. The limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor was 50 copies/ml. Within and between batches coefficients of variation (CV) were 2.5% and 3.2% respectively. Results obtained with our genosensor were also correlated with those by RT-PCR and r(2) value found with good accuracy of 97%. The electrode was reused by dipping it into 0.1M NaOH for 3min and lost 50% of its initial activity in 4 weeks. Furthermore the technique employed for detection of HBV is EIS, which is convenient and required less analysis time.
