Chiral nanomaterials in tissue engineering

Addressing significant medical challenges arising from tissue damage and organ failure, the field of tissue engineering has evolved to provide revolutionary approaches for regenerating functional tissues and organs. This involves employing various techniques, including the development and application of novel nanomaterials. Among them, chiral nanomaterials comprising non-superimposable nanostructures with their mirror images have recently emerged as innovative biomaterial candidates to guide tissue regeneration due to their unique characteristics. Chiral nanomaterials including chiral fibre supramolecular hydrogels, polymer-based chiral materials, self-assembling peptides, chiral-patterned surfaces, and the recently developed intrinsically chiroptical nanoparticles have demonstrated remarkable ability to regulate biological processes through routes such as enantioselective catalysis and enhanced antibacterial activity. Despite several recent reviews on chiral nanomaterials, limited attention has been given to the specific potential of these materials in facilitating tissue regeneration processes. Thus, this timely review aims to fill this gap by exploring the fundamental characteristics of chiral nanomaterials, including their chiroptical activities and analytical techniques. Also, the recent advancements in incorporating these materials in tissue engineering applications are highlighted. The review concludes by critically discussing the outlook of utilizing chiral nanomaterials in guiding future strategies for tissue engineering design.

Management of Brain Cancer and Neurodegenerative Disorders with Polymer-Based Nanoparticles as a Biocompatible Platform

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) serves as a protective barrier for the central nervous system (CNS) against drugs that enter the bloodstream. The BBB is a key clinical barrier in the treatment of CNS illnesses because it restricts drug entry into the brain. To bypass this barrier and release relevant drugs into the brain matrix, nanotechnology-based delivery systems have been developed. Given the unstable nature of NPs, an appropriate amount of a biocompatible polymer coating on NPs is thought to have a key role in reducing cellular cytotoxicity while also boosting stability. Human serum albumin (HSA), poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), Polylactide (PLA), poly (alkyl cyanoacrylate) (PACA), gelatin, and chitosan are only a few of the significant polymers mentioned. In this review article, we categorized polymer-coated nanoparticles from basic to complex drug delivery systems and discussed their application as novel drug carriers to the brain.

Lactide and Ethylene Brassylate-Based Thermoplastic Elastomers and Their Nanocomposites with Carbon Nanotubes: Synthesis, Mechanical Properties and Interaction with Astrocytes

Polylactide (PLA) is among the most commonly used polymers for biomedical applications thanks to its biodegradability and cytocompatibility. However, its inherent stiffness and brittleness are clearly inappropriate for the regeneration of soft tissues (e.g., neural tissue), which demands biomaterials with soft and elastomeric behavior capable of resembling the mechanical properties of the native tissue. In this work, both L- and D,L-lactide were copolymerized with ethylene brassylate, a macrolactone that represents a promising alternative to previously studied comonomers (e.g., caprolactone) due to its natural origin. The resulting copolymers showed an elastomeric behavior characterized by relatively low Young's modulus, high elongation at break and high strain recovery capacity. The thermoplastic nature of the resulting copolymers allows the incorporation of nanofillers (i.e., carbon nanotubes) that further enable the modulation of their mechanical properties. Additionally, nanostructured scaffolds were easily fabricated through a thermo-pressing process with the aid of a commercially available silicon stamp, providing geometrical cues for the adhesion and elongation of cells representative of the nervous system (i.e., astrocytes). Accordingly, the lactide and ethylene brassylate-based copolymers synthesized herein represent an interesting formulation for the development of polymeric scaffolds intended to be used in the regeneration of soft tissues, thanks to their adjustable mechanical properties, thermoplastic nature and observed cytocompatibility.

A new strategy to construct cellulose-chitosan films supporting Ag/Ag2O/ZnO heterostructures for high photocatalytic and antibacterial performance

The industrial wastewater contaminants including dyes and bacteria have caused serious environmental pollutions. Herein, ternary Ag/Ag₂O/ZnO heterostructure decorating cellulose-chitosan films were constructed via in situ synthesis. Cellulose and chitosan dissolved in alkali/urea solvent and regenerated in ethylene glycol to form cellulose/chitosan nanofiber network, which was an ideal supporter for ZnO and Ag nanoparticles and beneficial for recycle usage. The hydroxyl groups of cellulose and chitosan chains exposed and were utilized for the synthesis of Ag particles, as well as ZnO nanoparticles by biomineralization. The Ag/Ag₂O/ZnO decorating cellulose/chitosan (AZ@CC) films exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The width of inhibition zones around AZ@CC films reached 10.0-19.6 mm and 12.4-15.0 mm for S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Moreover, AZ@CC films exhibited good photocatalytic activity against methyl orange (MO), almost 97% degradation of methyl orange (MO) within 50 min was achieved with the assistance of AZ@CC film. Importantly, the nanocomposite films exhibited excellent tensile strength and thermal stability. This facile and eco-friendly approach provided a new route to utilize cellulose and chitosan advantages for constructing multifunctional materials.

Soft materials as biological and artificial membranes

The past few decades have seen emerging growth in the field of soft materials for synthetic biology. This review focuses on soft materials involved in biological and artificial membranes. The biological membranes discussed here are mainly those involved in the structure and function of cells and organelles. As building blocks in medicine, non-native membranes including nanocarriers (NCs), especially liposomes and DQAsomes, and polymeric membranes for scaffolds are constructed from amphiphilic combinations of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. Artificial membranes can be prepared using synthetic, soft materials and molecules and then incorporated into structures through self-organization to form micelles or niosomes. The modification of artificial membranes can be realized using traditional chemical methods such as click reactions to target the delivery of NCs and control the release of therapeutics. The biomembrane, a lamellar structure inlaid with ion channels, receptors, lipid rafts, enzymes, and other functional units, separates cells and organelles from the environment. An active domain inserted into the membrane and organelles for energy conversion and cellular communication can target disease by changing the membrane's composition, structure, and fluidity and affecting the on/off status of the membrane gates. The biological membrane targets analyzing pathological mechanisms and curing complex diseases, which inspires us to create NCs with artificial membranes.

Preparation of Hybrid Alginate-Chitosan Aerogel as Potential Carriers for Pulmonary Drug Delivery

This study aims to prepare hybrid chitosan-alginate aerogel microparticles without using additional ionic crosslinker as a possible pulmonary drug delivery system. The microparticles were prepared using the emulsion gelation method. The effect of the mixing order of the biopolymer within the emulsion and the surfactant used on final particle properties were investigated. Physicochemical characterizations were performed to evaluate particle size, density, morphology, surface area, surface charge, and the crystallinity of the preparation. The developed preparation was evaluated for its acute toxicity in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Measurements of zeta potential suggest that the surface charge depends mainly on the surfactant type while the order of biopolymer mixing has less impact on the surface charge. Chitosan amphiphilic properties changed the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of the emulsifying agents. The specific surface area of the prepared microparticles was in the range of (29.36-86.20) m²/g with a mesoporous pore size of (12.48-13.38) nm and pore volume of (0.09-0.29) cm³/g. The calculated aerodynamic diameter of the prepared particles was in the range of (0.17-2.29 µm). Toxicity studies showed that alginate-chitosan carrier developed herein caused mild lung inflammation with some renal and hepatic toxicities.

Titanium discs coated with 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine promote osteogenic differentiation of human bone mesenchymal stem cells in vitro

The bioinspired material 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (DOPA) is commonly used as a basic layer in surface modification for osteogenesis; however, its effects on bone remodeling and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effect of DOPA-coated surfaces on human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. Cells cultured on DOPA-modified titanium discs exhibited enhanced cellular adhesion and spreading compared with cells on non-treated surfaces. Moreover, DOPA-coating promoted greater cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, as determined using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, alkaline phosphatase activity test and quantitative mineralization measurements. Furthermore, microarray analysis revealed that genes participating in focal adhesion were upregulated on DOPA-coated surfaces. Our results indicate that the application of a simple DOPA coating can promote osteogenic differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells, improving new bone formation and bone remodeling around implantable devices in tissue engineering.

Treatment of neurodegenerative disorders through the blood-brain barrier using nanocarriers

Neurodegenerative diseases refer to disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) that are caused by neuronal degradations, dysfunctions, or death. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease (APHD) are regarded as the three major neurodegenerative diseases. There is a vast body of literature on the causes and treatments of these neurodegenerative diseases. However, the main obstacle in developing an effective treatment strategy is the permeability of the treatment components at the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Several strategies have been developed to improve this obstruction. For example, nanomaterials facilitate drug delivery to the BBB due to their size. They have been used widely in nanomedicine and as nanoprobes for diagnosis purposes among others in neuroscience. Nanomaterials in different forms, such as nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), and liposomes, have been used to treat neurodegenerative diseases. This review will cover the basic concepts and applications of nanomaterials in the therapy of APHD.

Biocompatible Porous Scaffolds of Chitosan/Poly(EG-ran-PG) Blends with Tailored Pore Size and Nontoxic to Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Preparation by Controlled Evaporation from Aqueous Acetic Acid Solution

The preparation of porous films (average size variation from 1 to 32 μm) of a 1:1 blend of chitosan with poly(EG-ran-PG) by the controlled evaporation of water from a 2 wt % aqueous acetic acid solution is reported. Interestingly, the blend exhibited porosity that could be tailored from 1 to 32 μm with the temperature of preparation of the blend film. The powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry analyses of the films suggested the formation of partially miscible blends. Temperature-induced phase separation of the blend appears to be the mechanism of pore formation. The tensile strength, cytotoxicity, and biocompatibility of the blend films for the growth of mesenchymal stem cells were assessed vis-a-vis chitosan. The 1:1 blend film was observed to lack cytotoxicity and was also viable for the growth of mesenchymal stem cells. The tensile properties of the 1:1 blend were superior to those of the chitosan film. The simple preparation of porous, nontoxic, and biocompatible films could find use as a scaffold in the growth of tissue, and especially bone tissue, in wound dressing, and in filtration if a better control over pore size is achieved.

Recent review of the effect of nanomaterials on stem cells

The field of stem-cell-therapy offers considerable promise as a means of delivering new treatments for a wide range of diseases. Recent progress in nanotechnology has stimulated the development of multifunctional nanomaterials (NMs) for stem-cell-therapy. Several clinical trials based on the use of NMs are currently underway for stem-cell-therapy purposes, such as drug/gene delivery and imaging. However, the interactions between NMs and stem cells are far from being completed, and the effects of the NMs on cellular behavior need critical evaluation. In this review, the interactions between several types of mostly used NMs and stem cells, and their associated possible mechanisms are systematically discussed, with specific emphasis on the possible differentiation effects induced by NMs. It is expected that the enhanced understanding of NM-stem cell interactions will facilitate biomaterial design for stem-cell-therapy and regenerative medicine applications.

Electrospun polymeric nanofibres as wound dressings: A review

Skin wounds have significant morbidity and mortality rates associated. This is explained by the limited effectiveness of the currently available treatments, which in some cases do not allow the reestablishment of the structure and functions of the damaged skin, leading to wound infection and dehydration. These drawbacks may have an impact on the healing process and ultimately prompt patients' death. For this reason, researchers are currently developing new wound dressings that enhance skin regeneration. Among them, electrospun polymeric nanofibres have been regarded as promising tools for improving skin regeneration due to their structural similarity with the extracellular matrix of normal skin, capacity to promote cell growth and proliferation and bactericidal activity as well as suitability to deliver bioactive molecules to the wound site. In this review, an overview of the recent studies concerning the production and evaluation of electrospun polymeric nanofibrous membranes for skin regenerative purposes is provided. Moreover, the current challenges and future perspectives of electrospun nanofibrous membranes suitable for this biomedical application are highlighted.

Polymer coated mesoporous ceramic for drug delivery in bone tissue engineering

Treatment strategy for various bone fracture and defects the researchers are focusing to develop a new carrier for delivering the drug into injured area with controlled and sustained manner using biomaterials with dynamic architecture orientation. Ceramic materials are resembled with bone compositional architecture and better bioactivity, degradability as well as antimicrobial activity made its enormous application in bone tissue engineering (BTE). Current focus in regenerative medicine were orchestration of biomaterials with the capacity of loading the drugs, growth factors, ionic components to promote better healing of bone tissue. Mesoporous type materials owed a great look towards the delivery of drugs, growth factors, etc in BTE because of its unique geometry. So the guest molecules loaded with geometrically organized ceramics would deliver onto the site of injury in controlled manner also the guiding and regulation of delivery of molecules have been controlled with the polymers response to different stimulation or biochemical factors as either scaffold or encapsulated particles for bone regeneration. Hence the review aims to describing the recent progress in bone tissue engineering using the ceramic based mesoporous materials encapsulated with polymers respond to different physiochemical stimulation for the efficient and controlled delivery of drug/growth factors for better bone healing.

The effect of temporal manipulation of transforming growth factor beta 3 and fibroblast growth factor 2 on the derivation of proliferative chondrocytes from mensenchymal stem cells-A study monitored by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and molecular beacon based nanosensors

Proliferative chondrocytes are critical to realize regeneration of damaged epiphyseal growth plate. However, acquiring autologous replacement cells involves highly invasive procedures and often results in limited cell quantity. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a potential source of chondrogenic cells for the treatment of cartilage disorders and injuries. The temporal effect of transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFβ3) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) on the derivation of proliferative chondrocytes from MSCs in three-dimensional agarose was investigated by manipulating the duration of TGFβ3 and FGF2 treatment. The differentiation process was monitored by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) as well as nanosensors containing two molecular beacons that target critical biomarkers for proliferative chondrocytes (i.e., collagen type-II messenger ribonucleic acid [mRNA] and Ki67 mRNA). The molecular beacon-based nanosensors were found to be comparable to qRT-PCR in measuring mRNA expression and thus providing a noninvasive mean to screen and monitor culture samples. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bone regeneration is associated with the concentration of tumour necrosis factor-α induced by sericin released from a silk mat

To understand the osteogenic effect of the middle layer of the silk cocoon, sericin was examined for its cellular effects associated with tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) signaling in this study. The fragmented sericin proteins in the silk mat were evaluated for the TNF-α expression level in murine macrophages. The concentration of protein released from silk mats was higher in the outermost and the innermost layers than in the middle layers, and the protein released from the silk mat was identified as sericin. The level of TNF-α in murine macrophages was dependent on the applied concentration of sericin, and the expression of genes associated with osteogenesis in osteoblast-like cells was dependent on the applied concentration of TNF-α. In animal experiments, silk mats from the middle layers led to a higher regenerated bone volume than silk mats from the innermost layer or the outermost layer. If TNF-α protein was incorporated into the silk mats from the middle layers, bone regeneration was suppressed compared with unloaded silk mats from the middle layers. Accordingly, silk mats from the silk cocoon can be considered to be a fragmented sericin-secreting carrier, and the level of sericin secretion is associated with TNF-α induction and bone regeneration.

Small Molecular TGF-β1-Inhibitor-Loaded Electrospun Fibrous Scaffolds for Preventing Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic scarring (HS) is a disorder that occurs during wound healing and seriously depresses the quality of human life. Scar-inhibiting scaffolds, though bringing promise to HS prevention, face problems such as the incompatibility of the scaffold materials and the instability of bioactive molecules. Herein, we present a TGF-β1-inhibitor-doped poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gelatin (PG) coelectrospun nanofibrous scaffold (PGT) for HS prevention during wound healing. The appropriate ratio of PCL to gelatin can avoid individual defects of the two materials and achieve an optimized mechanical property and biocompatibility. The TGF-β1 inhibitor (SB-525334) is a small molecule and is highly stable during electrospinning and drug release processes. The PGT effectively inhibits fibroblast (the major cell type contributing to scar formation) proliferation in vitro and successfully prevents HS formation during the healing of full-thickness model wounds on rabbit ear. Our strategy offers an excellent solution for potential large-scale production of scaffolds for clinical HS prevention.

Biomineralization: From Material Tactics to Biological Strategy

Biomineralization is an important tactic by which biological organisms produce hierarchically structured minerals with marvellous functions. Biomineralization studies typically focus on the mediation function of organic matrices on inorganic minerals, which helps scientists to design and synthesize bioinspired functional materials. However, the presence of inorganic minerals may also alter the native behaviours of organic matrices and even biological organisms. This progress report discusses the latest achievements relating to biomineralization mechanisms, the manufacturing of biomimetic materials and relevant applications in biological and biomedical fields. In particular, biomineralized vaccines and algae with improved thermostability and photosynthesis, respectively, demonstrate that biomineralization is a strategy for organism evolution via the rational design of organism-material complexes. The successful modification of biological systems using materials is based on the regulatory effect of inorganic materials on organic organisms, which is another aspect of biomineralization control. Unlike previous studies, this study integrates materials and biological science to achieve a more comprehensive view of the mechanisms and applications of biomineralization.

In vivo safety and efficacy of sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol)/glycerin scaffolds fabricated by freeze-drying and salt-leaching techniques for wound dressing applications

In our previous works, two techniques (freeze-drying and salt-leaching) were introduced to fabricate the sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol)/glycerin scaffolds. The freeze-dried and salt-leached sericin/poly(vinyl alcohol)/glycerin scaffolds with the same composition showed distinguished physical and in vitro biological characteristics. In this study, the in vivo safety and efficacy tests of both scaffolds as dressing materials for the healing of full-thickness wounds in rat model were performed in comparison with the clinically used dressing, Allevyn®. In the safety test, the scaffolds were implanted subcutaneously, and the signs of tissue irritation including the extent of inflammatory cells, calcification, vascularization, and fatty infiltration were scored. In the efficacy test, the scaffolds were applied to the full-thickness wound (1.5 cm × 1.5 cm), and the epithelialization and collagen formation in the wound were evaluated. Both freeze-dried and salt-leached scaffolds were characterized as non- to slightly irritant implantable materials. The freeze-dried scaffold minimally causes irritation to the tissue possibly because it was derived from the non-chemical relevant process. Furthermore, the freeze-dried scaffold showed the highest wound healing efficiency as characterized by the fastest epithelialization and highest extent of collagen formation. This might be due to the more sustained release of sericin from the freeze-dried scaffold, compared to that of the salt-leached scaffold. Therefore, fabrication process seemed to directly regulate the properties and applicability of the scaffolds. The safety and efficacy of the dressing materials in wound healing application depended not only on the materials themselves but also on the fabrication process that produces them.

Hyaluronic-Acid-Hydroxyapatite Colloidal Gels Combined with Micronized Native ECM as Potential Bone Defect Fillers

One of the grand challenges in translational regenerative medicine is the surgical placement of biomaterials. For bone regeneration in particular, malleable and injectable colloidal gelsare frequently designed to exhibit self-assembling and shear-response behavior which facilitates biomaterial placement in tissue defects. The current study demonstrated that by combining native extracellular matrix (ECM) microparticles, i.e., demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and decellularized cartilage (DCC), with hyaluronic acid (HA) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticles, a viscoelastic colloidal gel consisting exclusively of natural materials was achieved. Rheological testing of HA-ECM suspensions and HA-HAP-ECM colloidal gels concluded either equivalent or substantially higher storage moduli (G' ≈ 100-10 000 Pa), yield stresses (τ_y ≈ 100-1000 Pa), and viscoelastic recoveries (G'_recovery ≥ 87%) in comparison with controls formulated without ECM, which indicated a previously unexplored synergy in fluid properties between ECM microparticles and HA-HAP colloidal networks. Notable rheological differences were observed between respective DBM and DCC formulations, specifically in HA-HAP-DBM mixtures, which displayed a mean 3-fold increase in G' and a mean 4-fold increase in τ_y from corresponding DCC mixtures. An initial in vitro assessment of these potential tissue fillers as substrates for cell growth revealed that all formulations of HA-ECM and HA-HAP-ECM showed no signs of cytotoxicity and appeared to promote cell viability. Both DBM and DCC colloidal gels represent promising platforms for future studies in bone and cartilage tissue engineering. Overall, the current study identified colloidal gels constructed exclusively of natural materials, with viscoelastic properties that may facilitate surgical placement for a wide variety of therapeutic applications.

Fabrication and Applications of Micro/Nanostructured Devices for Tissue Engineering

Nanotechnology allows the realization of new materials and devices with basic structural unit in the range of 1-100 nm and characterized by gaining control at the atomic, molecular, and supramolecular level. Reducing the dimensions of a material into the nanoscale range usually results in the change of its physiochemical properties such as reactivity, crystallinity, and solubility. This review treats the convergence of last research news at the interface of nanostructured biomaterials and tissue engineering for emerging biomedical technologies such as scaffolding and tissue regeneration. The present review is organized into three main sections. The introduction concerns an overview of the increasing utility of nanostructured materials in the field of tissue engineering. It elucidates how nanotechnology, by working in the submicron length scale, assures the realization of a biocompatible interface that is able to reproduce the physiological cell-matrix interaction. The second, more technical section, concerns the design and fabrication of biocompatible surface characterized by micro- and submicroscale features, using microfabrication, nanolithography, and miscellaneous nanolithographic techniques. In the last part, we review the ongoing tissue engineering application of nanostructured materials and scaffolds in different fields such as neurology, cardiology, orthopedics, and skin tissue regeneration.

Self-assembling peptide hydrogel scaffolds support stem cell-based hair follicle regeneration

Recent studies show that designer peptide nanofibers can mimic properties of extracellular matrix molecules, promising great potential as scaffold materials for tissue engineering. However, their ability in supporting organogenesis has not been studied. Here we examined the effect of self-assembling peptide hydrogels in supporting skin derived precursors (SKPs) in hair follicle neogenesis. We found that hydrogels formed by RADA16, PRG which contains RGD, and particularly the combination of RADA16 and PRG (RADA-PRG) enhanced SKP proliferation. Notably, the RADA-PRG hydrogel, which exhibited advantages of RADA16 in adequate nanofiber formation and PRG in providing the integrin binding sequence, exhibited superior effects in enhancing SKP survival, expression of hair induction signature genes such as Akp2 and Bmp6, and more importantly de novo hair genesis in mice. Thus our results suggest that RADA-PRG may serve as a novel scaffold material for stem cell transplantation and tissue engineering.

Surface Functionalization of Orthopedic Titanium Implants with Bone Sialoprotein

Orthopedic implant failure due to aseptic loosening and mechanical instability remains a major problem in total joint replacement. Improving osseointegration at the bone-implant interface may reduce micromotion and loosening. Bone sialoprotein (BSP) has been shown to enhance bone formation when coated onto titanium femoral implants and in rat calvarial defect models. However, the most appropriate method of BSP coating, the necessary level of BSP coating, and the effect of BSP coating on cell behavior remain largely unknown. In this study, BSP was covalently coupled to titanium surfaces via an aminosilane linker (APTES), and its properties were compared to BSP applied to titanium via physisorption and untreated titanium. Cell functions were examined using primary human osteoblasts (hOBs) and L929 mouse fibroblasts. Gene expression of specific bone turnover markers at the RNA level was detected at different intervals. Cell adhesion to titanium surfaces treated with BSP via physisorption was not significantly different from that of untreated titanium at any time point, whereas BSP application via covalent coupling caused reduced cell adhesion during the first few hours in culture. Cell migration was increased on titanium disks that were treated with higher concentrations of BSP solution, independent of the coating method. During the early phases of hOB proliferation, a suppressive effect of BSP was observed independent of its concentration, particularly when BSP was applied to the titanium surface via physisorption. Although alkaline phosphatase activity was reduced in the BSP-coated titanium groups after 4 days in culture, increased calcium deposition was observed after 21 days. In particular, the gene expression level of RUNX2 was upregulated by BSP. The increase in calcium deposition and the stimulation of cell differentiation induced by BSP highlight its potential as a surface modifier that could enhance the osseointegration of orthopedic implants. Both physisorption and covalent coupling of BSP are similarly effective, feasible methods, although a higher BSP concentration is recommended.
