Zinc oxide and gold textured Janus nanowire integration in an impedimetric sensor for leptospirosis DNA-biomarker recognition

A "Janus particle" refers to the production of two materials in a single system and shows a difference in physical characteristics, and two surfaces participate in the formation with different chemistries. This research generated the Janus using a hybrid of zinc oxide (ZnO) and gold (Au) on the sensor surface toward making high-performance DNA sensors. The Janus ZnO/Au-textured film was synthesized via the one-step sol-gel method, which involves a suitable ratio of a mixture of ZnO sol seed solution. The synthesized Janus ZnO/Au-textured film undergoes a low-temperature aqueous hydrothermal route to synthesize quasi-one-dimensional nanowires. The average grain size in the Janus ZnO/Au nanotextured wire was 41.60 nm. The fabricated nanotextured wire was further optimized by tuning the thickness and characterized by XRD and high-resolution microscopy. Electrical characterization was conducted on the Janus ZnO/Au nanotextured wire coupled with an interdigitated electrode sensor to detect the specific leptospirosis DNA strand. The generated device is capable of detecting lower DNA concentration at 1 × 10^-13 M with a sensitivity of 8.54 MΩ M^-1 cm^-2 . The high performance is attained on linear concentrations of 10^-6 -10^-13 M with the determination coefficient, "I = 135437.63C-3609.07" R² = 0.9551. A potential strategy is proposed as a base for developing different high-performance sensors.

An overview of Structured Biosensors for Metal Ions Determination

The determination of metal ions is important for nutritional and toxicological assessment. Atomic spectrometric techniques are highly efficient for the determination of these species, but the high costs of acquisition and maintenance hinder the application of these techniques. Inexpensive alternatives for metallic element determination are based on dedicated biosensors. These devices mimic biological systems and convert biochemical processes into physical outputs and can be used for the sensitive and selective determination of chemical species such as cations. In this work, an overview of the proposed biosensors for metal ions determination was carried out considering the last 15 years of publications. Statistical data on the applications, response mechanisms, instrumentation designs, applications of nanomaterials, and multielement analysis are herein discussed.

Electrical detection of trace zinc ions with an extended gate-AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility sensor

In this report, we have developed a high sensitivity zinc ion (Zn2+) detection method based on a Schiff base functionalized extended gate (EG)-AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility (HEMT) sensor. The complexation reaction between the Schiff base and the zinc ions would cause surface potential change on the extended gate, and achieve the purpose of zinc ion detection. Compared with conventional methods, the Schiff base functionalized EG-AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility sensor showed a rapid response (less than 10 seconds) and the limit of detection (LOD) was 1 fM. At the same time, the real-time detection of zinc ion concentration ranging from 1 fM to 1 μM showed good linearity (R2 = 0.9962). These results indicated that it provides a promising real-time detection method for trace-free zinc ion trace detection.

An ‘‘off–on–off’’ sensor for sequential detection of Cu2+ and hydrogen sulfide based on a naphthalimide–rhodamine B derivative and its application in dual-channel cell imaging

A novel colorimetric and fluorometric sensor with unique dual-channel emission to sequentially detect Cu²⁺ and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was synthesized from naphthalimide–rhodamine B through the PET and FRET mechanism. The sensor showed a selective “off–on” fluorescence response with a 120-fold increase toward Cu²⁺, and its limits of detection were 0.26 μM and 0.17 μM for UV-vis and fluorescence measurements, respectively. In addition, 1–Cu²⁺ was an efficient “on–off” sensor to detect H₂S with detection limits of 0.40 μM (UV-vis measurement) and 0.23 μM (fluorescence measurement), respectively. Furthermore, the sensor can also be used for biological imaging of intracellular staining in living cells. Therefore, the sensor should be highly promising for the detection of low level Cu²⁺ and H₂S with great potential in many practical applications.
