Abstract
The syntheses of hexabrominated closo-carborates decorated with different chiral Binol-derived phosphonates and their conjugate acids are described. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a polymeric structure for the sodium salt with the anionic units connected by [B-Br-Na-O═P]+ linkages. For the acid, coordination of the proton to the phosphonate's P═O oxygen atom is assumed. The pKa value was estimated by combining experiments and computations. Application of these Brønsted acids as chiral catalysts in an imino-ene and a Mukaiyama-Mannich reaction was moderately successful.

Abstract
Enhanced rates and selectivity in enzymes are enabled in part by precisely tuned electric fields within active sites. Analogously, the use of charged groups to leverage electrostatics in molecular systems is a promising strategy to tune reactivity. However, separation of the through space and through bond effects of charged functional groups is a long standing challenge that limits the rational application of electric fields in molecular systems. To address this challenge we developed a method using the phosphorus selenium coupling value (J P-Se) of anionic phosphine selenides to quantify the electrostatic contribution of the borate moiety to donor strength. In this analysis we report the synthesis of a novel anionic phosphine, PPh2CH2BF3K, the corresponding tetraphenyl phosphonium and tetraethyl ammonium selenides [PPh4][SePPh2CH2BF3] and [TEA][SePPh2CH2BF3], and the Rh carbonyl complex [PPh4][Rh(acac)(CO)(PPh2(CH2BF3))]. Solvent-dependent changes in J P-Se were fit using Coulomb's law and support up to an 80% electrostatic contribution to the increase in donor strength of [PPh4][SePPh2CH2BF3] relative to SePPh2Et, while controls with [TEA][SePPh2CH2BF3] exclude convoluting ion pairing effects. Calculations using explicit solvation or point charges effectively replicate the experimental data. This J P-Se method was extended to [PPh4][SePPh2(2-BF3Ph)] and likewise estimates up to a 70% electrostatic contribution to the increase in donor strength relative to SePPh3. The use of PPh2CH2BF3K also accelerates C-F oxidative addition reactivity with Ni(COD)2 by an order of magnitude in comparison to the comparatively donating neutral phosphines PEt3 and PCy3. This enhanced reactivity prompted the investigation of catalytic fluoroarene C-F borylation, with improved yields observed for less fluorinated arenes. These results demonstrate that covalently bound charged functionalities can exert a significant electrostatic influence under common solution phase reaction conditions and experimentally validate theoretical predictions regarding electrostatic effects in reactivity.

Abstract
The crystal structure of 1,12-diiodo-ortho-carborane 1,12-I2-1,2-C2B10H10 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In contrary to earlier studied 1,12-dibromo analogue 1,12-Br2-1,2- C2B10H10, its crystal packing is governed by the presence of the intermolecular I⋯I dihalogen bonds between the iodine atom attached to the carbon atom (acceptor) and the iodine atom attached to the antipodal boron atom (donor) of the carborane cage. The observed dihalogen bonds belong to the II type and are characterized by classical parameters: shortened I⋯I distance of 3.5687(9) Å, C–I⋯I angle of 172.61(11)° and B–I⋯I angle of 92.98(12)°.

Abstract
Weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) are generally tailored to act as spectators with little or no function. Here we describe the implementation of strongly coordinating dianionic carboranyl N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to create organometallic -ate complexes of Au(I) that serve both as WCAs and functional catalysts. These organometallic WCAs can be utilized to form both heterobimetallic (Au(I)-/Ag(I)+; Au(I)-/Ir(I)+) and organometallic/main group ion pairs (Au(I)-/(CPh3+ or SiEt3+). Because parent unfunctionalized dianionic carboranyl NHC complex 3 is unstable in most solvents when paired with CPh3+, novel synthesis methodology was devised to create polyhalogenated carboranyl NHCs, which show superior stability toward electrophilic substitution and cyclometalation chemistry. Additionally, the WCAs containing polyhalogenated carboranyl NHCs are among the most active catalysts reported for the hydroamination of alkynes. This investigation has also produced the first examples of a low-coordinate Au(III) center with two cis accessible coordination sites and the first true dianionic carbene. These studies pave the way for the design of functional ion pairs that have the potential to participate in tandem or cooperative small-molecule activation and catalysis.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative B-H/C-H cross coupling of monocarborane anions with alkenes is reported, allowing for the first time the isolation of selectively penta-alkenylated boron clusters. The reaction cascade is regioselective for the cage positions, leading directly to B2-6 functionalization. Under mild and convenient conditions, styrenes, benzylic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes are demonstrated to be viable coupling partners with exclusive vinyl-type B-C bond formation. Multiple subsequent transformations provide access to directing group-free products, chiral derivatives and penta-alkylated cages. The five-fold coupling, combined with the latter reactions, represents a powerful methodology for the straightforward synthesis of new classes of boron clusters.

Abstract
The synthesis of [1,1'-bis(o-carboranyl)]boranes was achieved through the deprotonation of 1,1'-bis(o-carborane) reagents followed by salt metathesis with (iPr)2NBCl2. X-ray crystallography confirms planar central BC4 rings and Gutmann-Beckett studies reveal an increase in Lewis acidity at the boron center in comparison to their biphenyl congener, 9-borafluorene.

Abstract
Classically closo-carborane anions, particularly [HCB11H11]- and [HCB9H9]-, and their derivatives have primarily been used as weakly coordinating anions to isolate reactive intermediates, platforms for stoichiometric and catalytic functionalization, counteranions for simple Lewis acid catalysis, and components of materials like liquid crystals. The aim of this article is to educate the reader on the contemporary nonclassical applications of these anions. Specifically, this review will cover new directions in main group catalysis utilized to achieve some of the most challenging catalytic reactions such as C-F, C-H, and C-C functionalizations that are difficult or impossible to realize with transition metals. In addition, the review will cover the utilization of the clusters as dianionic C σ-bound ligands for coordination chemistry, ligand substituents for coordination chemistry and advanced catalyst design, and covalently bound spectator substituents to stabilize radicals. Furthermore, their applications as solution-based and solid-state electrolytes for Li, Na, and Mg batteries will be discussed.

Abstract
A new family of carboranyl phosphine-iminophosphorane ligands was prepared and characterized. The new ligands present a carboranyl group directly attached to the iminophosphorane nitrogen atom through a cage carbon atom (C-carboranyl derivatives L1-L3) or through the B3 boron atom (B-carboranyl derivatives L4 and L5), and the phosphine group on a side chain derived from the diphosphine dppm, i.e. with a two-atom spacer between the P and N donor atoms. The non-carboranyl analogue L6, with a biphenyl group on the nitrogen atom, was also synthesized for comparison. These potential (P, N) ligands were used to obtain palladium complexes (Pd1-Pd6) and, thus, study how the different inductive effect of the carboranyl substituents can modify the coordinating ability of the nitrogen atom. The structural analysis of the complexes revealed two different coordination modes for the ligands: the (P, N) chelate coordination and the unexpected P-terminal coordination, which is not observed for non-carboranyl phosphine-iminophosphoranes. These unexpected structural differences led us to perform DFT calculations on the ligands and metal complexes. The calculations show that the final coordination modes depend on the balance between the electronic and steric properties of the particular carboranyl group.

Abstract
The preparation of the carborane acid chloride [1-(COCl)–CB11H11]− from the carboxylic acid [1-(COOH)–CB11H11]− is reported. This acid chloride exhibits remarkable inertness towards moisture and can be stored under ambient conditions for several months. Reaction with amines affords secondary and tertiary carborane amides [1-(CONR1R2)–CB11H11]− in moderate to high yields under mild conditions. Two of the amide products were characterized by X-ray crystallography in addition to spectroscopic analysis. Preliminary studies show that the amides can be reduced to the corresponding amines and that the acid chloride has the potential to serve as a starting material for carborane ester formation. The preparation of the carborane acid chloride [1-(COCl)–CB11H11]− from the carboxylic acid [1-(COOH)–CB11H11]− and subsequent amide formation are reported.![]()

Abstract
Racemic carborane-based bisphosphanes were obtained by dismutation reactions between a carborane-based diphosphetane and diaryl dichalogenides. NMR spectroscopic and theoretical studies revealed a two-step mechanism explaining the high stereoselectivity of these reactions. The coordination chemistry of the multidentate P,N ligands 6c and 6d in copper(I) and silver(I) complexes was studied. While 6d acted exclusively as tetradentate ligand, 6c showed either tridentate or tetradentate coordination depending on the metal and the counterion.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for selective cage B(3) multiple functionalization of o-carborane is described. Reaction of [3-N2-o-C2B10H11][BF4] with various kinds of nucleophiles gave a very broad spectrum of cage B(3)-substituted o-carborane derivatives, 3-X-o-C2B10H11 (X = OH, SCN, NH2, NO2, N3, CF3, PO(C6H5)2, etc). This reaction may serve as another efficient [18F]-radiolabeling method of carborane clusters for positron emission tomography applications.
