Abstract
A photo-responsive bi-component solid is designed based on robust large synthons. The study not only provides a template-based approach for a system that was difficult to photo-dimerize, but the designed solid also leads to photo-induced cracking upon photodimerization. The delicate structural design helps in capturing the structural intermediates, which reveals a possible reorientation of the photodimer within the crystal to maintain structural integrity.

Abstract
Using highly sensitive and selective in situ techniques to investigate the dynamics of intermediates formation is key to better understand reaction mechanisms. However, investigating the early stages of solid-state reactions/transformations is still challenging. Here we introduce in situ fluorescence spectroscopy to observe the evolution of intermediates during a two-step [2 + 2] photocycloaddition process in a coordination polymer platform. The structural changes and kinetics of each step under ultraviolet light irradiation versus time are accompanied by the gradual increase-decrease of intensity and blue-shift of the fluorescence spectra from the crystals. Monitoring the fluorescence behavior using a laser scanning confocal microscope can directly visualize the inhomogeneity of the photocycloaddition reaction in a single crystal. Theoretical calculations allow us to rationalize the fluorescence behavior of these compounds. We provide a convenient strategy for visualizing the solid-state photocycloaddition dynamics using fluorescence spectroscopy and open an avenue for kinetic studies of a variety of fast reactions.

Abstract
A novel cyclobutane-containing diacid building block, CBDA-3, was synthesized from sorbic acid using clean, efficient [2 + 2] photocycloaddition. This photoreaction can be performed using commercially available germicidal lamps, which represent a form of ECO-UV. SC-XRD showed that the cyclobutane ring in CBDA-3 has a unique semi-rigid character, unlike more rigid aromatic rings or more flexible types of aliphatic rings. C=C bonds present in the structure of CBDA-3 provide opportunities for derivatization which could be used to alter the characteristics of polymers made from this monomer. Additionally, TGA and DSC analysis showed CBDA-3 to have excellent thermal stability. These characteristics make CBDA-3 a promising building block with the potential to be used as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-derived diacids. Finally, a facile and reliable Fischer esterification of CBDA-3 was performed to tune its melting point and solubility for different applications and to demonstrate the applicability of this building block in polymer synthesis. Abstract
In homogeneous solid‐state reactions, the single‐crystal nature of the starting material remains unchanged, and the system evolves seamlessly through a series of solid solutions of reactant and product. Among [2+2] photodimerizations of cinnamic acid derivatives in the solid state, those involving salts of the 4‐aminocinnamic acid have been recognized to proceed homogeneously in a “single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal” fashion by X‐ray diffraction techniques. Here the bromide salt of this compound class is taken as a model system in a Raman spectroscopy study at low wavelengths, to understand how such a mechanism defines the trend of the crystal lattice vibrations during the reaction. Vibrational mode calculations, based on dispersion corrected DFT simulations of the crystal lattices involved in the transformation, have assisted the interpretation of the experiments. Such an approach has allowed us to clarify the spectral signatures and to establish a correlation between the dynamics of the monomer and dimer systems in a process where chemical progress and crystal structural changes are demonstrated to occur simultaneously.

Abstract
Photoirradiation of a binary cocrystal composed of two different cyclic dienes generates a highly-symmetric cubane-like tetraacid cage regioselectively and in quantitative yield. The cage forms by a double [2+2] photodimerization of one of the diene cocrystal components. The second diene while photostable in the cocrystal reacts in a double [2+2] photodimerization as a pure form quantitatively to form a tetramethyl cubane-like cage. The stereochemistry of the cage is structurally authenticated.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis of a series of covalently linked dimers of quadrupolar curcuminoid-BF2 dyes and the detailed investigation of their solvent-dependent spectroscopic and photophysical properties. In solvents of low polarity, intramolecular folding induces the formation of aggregated chromophores, the UV/Vis absorption spectra of which display the optical signature characteristic of weakly-coupled H-aggregates. The extent of folding and, in turn, of ground-state aggregation is strongly dependent on the nature of the flexible linker. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence emission spectroscopies show that the Frenkel exciton relaxes into a fluorescent symmetrical excimer state with a long lifetime. Furthermore, our in-depth studies show that a weakly emitting excimer lies on the pathway toward a photocyclomer. Two-dimensional 1 H NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) allowed the structure of the photoproduct to be established. To our knowledge, this represents the first example of a [2π+2π] photodimerization of the curcuminoid chromophore.

Abstract
Scalable synthesis of β-truxinic acid (CBDA-4) was accomplished by capturing and photodimerizing a metastable crystalline solid of trans-cinnamic acid. This synthetic approach builds a foundation for investigating the properties and applications of the useful diacid. The X-ray crystal structure of CBDA-4 was determined for the first time. The cyclobutane ring in CBDA-4 was cleaved upon heating, making it a promising building block for thermally recyclable/degradable materials.

Abstract
Regioselective photodimerization of trans-4-styrylpyridine (4-spy) derivatives is performed using pseudorotaxane-like Zn-based metal organic frameworks MOFs as templates. The formation of rctt-HT (head-to-tail) dimers is achieved by confining pairs of coordinated 4-spy derivative ligands within hexagonal windows and then irradiating them with UV light. It is also possible to achieve a photodimerization reaction where two different substituted 4-spy ligands are included in such a MOF material. The ether bond formation is employed to protect the sensitive -OH group of HO-spy and the methyl group of CH3 O-spy is subsequently removed after the formation of cyclobutane derivative in the CH3 O-spy-based MOF. Introducing substituents at the 2- or 3-position of the phenyl group of 4-spy does not significantly affect the rate of the dimerization process except in the case of the strongly electron-withdrawing nitro group where the rate is significantly decreased. These results are in striking contrast to the mixtures of photoproducts and low yields obtained by untemplated photodimerization in organic solvents.

Abstract
The [4 + 4] photoreactivity of the anthracene derivative 9-(methylaminomethyl)anthracene (MAMA) has been investigated in solution, gel medium and in the solid state. While quantitative formation of the cyloaddition photoproduct was achieved upon irradiation at λ = 365 nm of ethanol solutions of MAMA, only partial and slow conversion was detected in gels of low molecular weight gelators, and solid-state reactivity was not observed due to the unfavourable relative orientation of the anthracene moieties in the crystal. In hexafluorophosphate, tetrafluoroborate and nitrate silver(i) complexes, however, 9-(methylaminomethyl)anthracene exhibits a more favourable mutual orientation for the aromatic fragments, and [4 + 4] photoreactivity resulted. All compounds were structurally characterized via single crystal and/or X-ray powder diffraction and by Raman spectroscopy; this last technique proved effective in detection of the photoproduct in all solid state complexes.

Abstract
The conceptual relationship between crystal reactivity, stability and meta-stability, solubility and morphology on the one hand and shape, charge distribution, chirality and distribution of functional groups over the molecular surfaces on the other hand is discussed, via a number of examples coming from three decades of research in the field of crystal engineering at the University of Bologna. The bottom-up preparation of mixed crystals, co-crystals and photoreactive materials starting from molecular building blocks across the borders of organic, organometallic and metalorganic chemistry is recounted.
