Atomically dispersed platinum on low index and stepped ceria surfaces: phase diagrams and stability analysis

Through the combination of density functional theory calculations and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics modeling, we demonstrate that atomically dispersed platinum species on ceria can adopt a range of local coordination configurations and oxidation states that depend on the surface structure and environmental conditions. Unsaturated oxygen atoms on ceria surfaces play the leading role in stabilization of PtOx species. Any mono-dispersed Pt0 species are thermodynamically unstable compared to bulk platinum, and oxidation of Pt0 to Pt2+ or Pt4+ is necessary to stabilize mono-dispersed platinum atoms. Reduction to Pt0 leads to sintering. Both Pt2+ and Pt4+ prefer to form the square-planar [PtO4] configuration. The two most stable Pt2+ species on the (223) and (112) surfaces are thermodynamically favorable between 300 and 1200 K. The most stable Pt4+ species on the (100) surface tends to desorb from the surface as gas phase above 950 K. The resulting phase diagrams of the atomically dispersed platinum in PtOx clusters on various ceria surfaces under a range of experimentally relevant conditions can be used to predict dynamic restructuring of atomically dispersed platinum catalysts and design new catalysts with engineered properties.

One-Step Synthesis of Metal/Oxide Nanocomposites by Gas Phase Condensation

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs), either supported on a porous oxide framework or finely dispersed within an oxide matrix, find applications in catalysis, plasmonics, nanomagnetism and energy conversion, among others. The development of synthetic routes that enable to control the morphology, chemical composition, crystal structure and mutual interaction of metallic and oxide phases is necessary in order to tailor the properties of this class of nanomaterials. With this work, we aim at developing a novel method for the synthesis of metal/oxide nanocomposites based on the assembly of NPs formed by gas phase condensation of metal vapors in a He/O₂ atmosphere. This new approach relies on the independent evaporation of two metallic precursors with strongly different oxidation enthalpies. Our goal is to show that the precursor with less negative enthalpy gives birth to metallic NPs, while the other to oxide NPs. The selected case study for this work is the synthesis of a Fe-Co/TiO_x nanocomposite, a system of great interest for its catalytic and magnetic properties. By exploiting the new concept, we achieve the desired target, i.e., a nanoscale dispersion of metallic alloy NPs within titanium oxide NPs, the structure of which can be tailored into TiO_1-δ or TiO₂ by controlling the synthesis and processing atmosphere. The proposed synthesis technique is versatile and scalable for the production of many NPs-assembled metal/oxide nanocomposites.

Synthesis without Solvents: The Cluster (Nanoparticle) Beam Route to Catalysts and Sensors

It is hard to predict the future of science. For example, when C₆₀ and its structure were identified from the mass spectra of gas phase carbon clusters, few could have predicted the era of carbon nanotechnology which the discovery introduced. The solubilization and functionalization of C₆₀, the identification and then synthesis of carbon nanotubes, and the generation and physics of graphene have made a scale of impact on the international R&D (and to some extent industrial) landscape which could not have been foreseen. Technology emerged from a search for molecules of astrochemical interest in the interstellar gas. This little sketch provides the authors with the confidence to present here a status report on progress toward another radical future-the synthesis of nanoparticles (typically metals) on an industrial scale without solvents and consequently effluents, without salts and their sometimes accompanying toxicity, with minimal prospects for unwanted nanoparticle escape into the environment, with a high degree of precision in the control of the size, shape and composition of the nanoparticles produced and with applications from catalysts and sensors to photonics, electronics and theranostics. In fact, our story begins in exactly the same place as the origin of the nanocarbon era-the generation and mass selection of free atomic clusters in a vacuum chamber. The steps along the path so far include deposition of such beams of clusters onto surfaces in vacuum, elucidation of the key elements of the cluster-surface interaction, and demonstrations of the potential applications of deposited clusters. The principal present challenges, formidable but solvable, are the necessary scale-up of cluster beam deposition from the nanogram to the gram scale and beyond, and the processing and integration of the nanoclusters into appropriate functional architectures, such as powders for heterogeneous catalysis, i.e., the formulation engineering problem. The research which is addressing these challenges is illustrated in this Account by examples of cluster production (on the traditional nanogram scale), emphasizing self-selection of size, controlled generation of nonspherical shapes, and nonspherical binary nanoparticles; by the scale-up of cluster beam production by orders of magnitude with the magnetron sputtering, gas condensation cluster source, and especially the Matrix Assembly Cluster Source (MACS); and by promising demonstrations of deposited clusters in gas sensing and in heterogeneous catalysis (this on the gram scale) in relevant environments (both liquid and vapor phases). The impact on manufacturing engineering of the new paradigm described here is undoubtedly radical; the prospects for economic success are, as usual, full of uncertainties. Exposure of mass-selected bimetallic Pt–Ti nanoalloys to oxygen explored using scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory

The response of nanoparticles to exposure to ambient conditions and especially oxidation is fundamental to the application of nanotechnology. Bimetallic platinum–titanium nanoparticles of selected mass, 30 kDa and 90 kDa, were produced using a magnetron sputtering gas condensation cluster source and deposited onto amorphous carbon TEM grids. The nanoparticles were analysed with a C_s-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM) in High Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) mode. It was observed that prior to full Ti oxidation, Pt atoms were dispersed within a Ti shell. However, after full oxidation by prolonged exposure to ambient conditions prior to STEM, the smaller size 30 kDa particles form a single Pt core and the larger size 90 kDa particles exhibit a multi-core structure. Electron beam annealing induced a single core morphology in the larger particles. First principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to calculate the lowest energy structure of the Pt–Ti nanoparticles with and without the presence of oxygen. It was demonstrated that, as the concentration of oxygen increases, the lowest energy structure changes from dispersed Pt to multiple Pt cores and finally a single Pt core, which is in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Exploring the Optical and Morphological Properties of Ag and Ag/TiO₂ Nanocomposites Grown by Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition

Nanocomposite systems and nanoparticle (NP) films are crucial for many applications and research fields. The structure-properties correlation raises complex questions due to the collective structure of these systems, often granular and porous, a crucial factor impacting their effectiveness and performance. In this framework, we investigate the optical and morphological properties of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) films and of Ag NPs/TiO₂ porous matrix films, one-step grown by supersonic cluster beam deposition. Morphology and structure of the Ag NPs film and of the Ag/TiO₂ (Ag/Ti 50-50) nanocomposite are related to the optical properties of the film employing spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). We employ a simple Bruggeman effective medium approximation model, corrected by finite size effects of the nano-objects in the film structure to gather information on the structure and morphology of the nanocomposites, in particular porosity and average NPs size for the Ag/TiO₂ NP film. Our results suggest that SE is a simple, quick and effective method to measure porosity of nanoscale films and systems, where standard methods for measuring pore sizes might not be applicable.

Core@shell, Au@TiOx nanoparticles by gas phase synthesis

Herein, gas phase synthesis and characterization of multifunctional core@shell, Au@TiOx nanoparticles have been reported. The nanoparticles were produced via a one-step process using a multiple-ion cluster source under a controlled environment that guaranteed the purity of the nanoparticles. The growth of the Au cores (6 nm diameter) is stopped when they pass through the Ti plasma where they are covered by an ultra-thin (1 nm thick) and homogeneous titanium shell that is oxidized in-flight before the soft-landing of the nanoparticles. The Au cores were found to be highly crystalline with icosahedral (44%) and decahedral (66%) structures, whereas the shell, mainly composed of TiO2 (79%), was not ordered. The highly electrical insulating behaviour of the titanium oxide shell was confirmed by the charging effect produced during X-ray photoemission spectroscopy.
