An Insight into the Role of Reactant Structure Effect in Pd/C Catalysed Aldehyde Hydrogenation

The different activity of a 1% Pd/carbon catalyst towards aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes hydrogenation has been explored by ¹³C NMR relaxation. The ratio between T1 relaxation times of adsorbed (ads) and free diffusing (bulk) molecules (T1_ads/T1_bulk) can be used as an indicator of the relative strength of interaction between the reactant and the catalytic surface, where the lower the T1_ads/T1_bulk, the higher the adsorption strength. It can be seen that 1% Pd/carbon showed a reverse catalytic behaviour towards benzaldehyde and octanal hydrogenation, which can be explained by analysing the T1 relaxation times related to each substrate in the presence of the catalyst. Comparing and correlating the different T1_ads/T1_bulk values, we were able to prove that the different catalytic results mainly depend on the contrasting adsorption behaviour of substrates on the catalyst. Moreover, the role of the solvent has been disclosed, as NMR results revealed that the adsorption of the reactants was strongly affected by the choice of solvent, which is revealed to be critical in modulating catalytic activity. As a consequence, T1_ads/T1_bulk measurements can provide a guide to the selection of appropriate reaction conditions for improving catalytic activity.

Nuclear spin relaxation as a probe of zeolite acidity: a combined NMR and TPD investigation of pyridine in HZSM-5

The relative surface affinities of pyridine within microporous HZSM-5 zeolites are explored using two-dimensional ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation time measurements. The dimensionless ratio of longitudinal-to-transverse nuclear spin relaxation times T₁/T₂ is shown to exhibit strong sensitivity to the silica/alumina ratio (SAR) of these zeolites, which is indicative of material acidity. This trend is interpreted in terms of increased pyridine surface affinity with decreasing SAR. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) analysis corroborates this observation, revealing a distinct increase in the heat of desorption associated with adsorbed pyridine as a function of decreasing SAR. A direct correlation between NMR and TPD data suggests NMR relaxation time analysis can be a valuable tool for the non-invasive characterisation of adsorption phenomena in microporous solids.

NMR relaxation in porous materials at zero and ultralow magnetic fields

NMR detection in the ultralow-field regime (below 10 μT) was used to measure the nuclear spin relaxation rates of liquids imbibed into silica pellets with mean pore diameters in the 10-50 nm range. Heptane, formic acid and acetic acid were studied and relaxation rate data were compared with a conventional field-cycling NMR technique. Detection of ¹H-¹³C spin coupling NMR signals at zero field (∼0.1 nT) allowed spectroscopic identification of molecules inside the porous material and unambiguous measurements of the chemistry-specific relaxation rates in liquid mixtures. In the case of molecules that contain ¹H and ¹³C, spin-singlet state relaxation can provide additional information about the dynamics. Applications and future improvements to the methodology are discussed.
