Incorporating Nuclear Quantum Effects in Molecular Dynamics with a Constrained Minimized Energy Surface

The accurate incorporation of nuclear quantum effects in large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations remains a significant challenge. Recently, we combined constrained nuclear-electronic orbital (CNEO) theory with classical MD and obtained a new approach (CNEO-MD) that can accurately and efficiently incorporate nuclear quantum effects into classical simulations. In this Letter, we provide the theoretical foundation for CNEO-MD by developing an alternative formulation of the equations of motion for MD. In this new formulation, the expectation values of quantum nuclear positions evolve classically on an effective energy surface that is obtained from a constrained energy minimization procedure when solving for the quantum nuclear wave function, thus enabling the incorporation of nuclear quantum effects in classical MD simulations. For comparison with other existing approaches, we examined a series of model systems and found that this new MD approach is significantly more accurate than the conventional way of performing classical MD and generally outperforms centroid MD and ring-polymer MD in describing vibrations in these model systems.

Exact Factorization Adventures: A Promising Approach for Non-Bound States

Modeling the dynamics of non-bound states in molecules requires an accurate description of how electronic motion affects nuclear motion and vice-versa. The exact factorization (XF) approach offers a unique perspective, in that it provides potentials that act on the nuclear subsystem or electronic subsystem, which contain the effects of the coupling to the other subsystem in an exact way. We briefly review the various applications of the XF idea in different realms, and how features of these potentials aid in the interpretation of two different laser-driven dissociation mechanisms. We present a detailed study of the different ways the coupling terms in recently-developed XF-based mixed quantum-classical approximations are evaluated, where either truly coupled trajectories, or auxiliary trajectories that mimic the coupling are used, and discuss their effect in both a surface-hopping framework as well as the rigorously-derived coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical approach.

Describing the photo-isomerization of a retinal chromophore model with coupled and quantum trajectories

The exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wavefunction is applied to the study of the photo- isomerization of a retinal chromophore model. We describe such an ultrafast nonadiabatic process by analyzing the time-dependent potentials of the theory and by mimicking nuclear dynamics with quantum and coupled trajectories. The time-dependent vector and scalar potentials are the signature of the exact factorization, as they guide nuclear dynamics by encoding the complete electronic dynamics and including excited-state effects. Analysis of the potentials is, thus, essential - when possible - to predict the time-dependent behavior of the system of interest. In this work, we employ the exact time-dependent potentials, available for the numerically-exactly solvable model used here, to propagate quantum nuclear trajectories representing the isomerization reaction of the retinal chromophore. The quantum trajectories are the best possible trajectory-based description of the reaction when using the exact-factorization formalism, and thus allow us to assess the performance of the coupled-trajectory, fully approximate, schemes derived from the exact-factorization equations.

Seemingly asymmetric atom-localized electronic densities following laser-dissociation of homonuclear diatomics

Recent experiments on laser-dissociation of aligned homonuclear diatomic molecules show an asymmetric forward-backward (spatial) electron-localization along the laser polarization axis. Most theoretical models attribute this asymmetry to interference effects between gerade and ungerade vibronic states. Presumably due to alignment, these models neglect molecular rotations and hence infer an asymmetric (post-dissociation) charge distribution over the two identical nuclei. In this paper, we question the equivalence that is made between spatial electron-localization, observed in experiments, and atomic electron-localization, alluded by these theoretical models. We show that (seeming) agreement between these models and experiments is due to an unfortunate omission of nuclear permutation symmetry, i.e., quantum statistics. Enforcement of the latter requires mandatory inclusion of the molecular rotational degree of freedom, even for perfectly aligned molecules. Unlike previous interpretations, we ascribe spatial electron-localization to the laser creation of a rovibronic wavepacket that involves field-free molecular eigenstates with opposite space-inversion symmetry i.e., even and odd parity. Space-inversion symmetry breaking would then lead to an asymmetric distribution of the (space-fixed) electronic density over the forward and backward hemisphere. However, owing to the simultaneous coexistence of two indistinguishable molecular orientational isomers, our analytical and computational results show that the post-dissociation electronic density along a specified space-fixed axis is equally shared between the two identical nuclei-a result that is in perfect accordance with the principle of the indistinguishability of identical particles.

Quantum-classical nonadiabatic dynamics of Floquet driven systems

We develop a trajectory-based approach for excited-state molecular dynamics simulations of systems subject to an external periodic drive. We combine the exact-factorization formalism, allowing us to treat electron-nuclear systems in nonadiabatic regimes, with the Floquet formalism for time-periodic processes. The theory is developed starting with the molecular time-dependent Schrödinger equation with the inclusion of an external periodic drive that couples to the system dipole moment. With the support of the Floquet formalism, quantum dynamics is approximated by combining classical-like, trajectory-based, nuclear evolution with electronic dynamics represented in the Floquet basis. The resulting algorithm, which is an extension of the coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical scheme for periodically driven systems, is applied to a model study, exactly solvable, with different field intensities.

Quantum Trajectories for the Dynamics in the Exact Factorization Framework: A Proof-of-Principle Test

In the framework of the exact factorization of the time-dependent electron-nuclear wave function, we investigate the possibility of solving the nuclear time-dependent Schrödinger equation based on trajectories. The nuclear equation is separated in a Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the phase of the wave function, and a continuity equation for its (squared) modulus. For illustrative adiabatic and nonadiabatic one-dimensional models, we implement a procedure to follow the evolution of the nuclear density along the characteristics of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Those characteristics are referred to as quantum trajectories, since they are generated via ordinary differential equations similar to Hamilton's equations, but including the so-called quantum potential, and they can be used to reconstruct exactly the quantum-mechanical nuclear wave function, provided infinite initial conditions are propagated in time.

Nonadiabatic Dynamics in a Laser Field: Using Floquet Fewest Switches Surface Hopping To Calculate Electronic Populations for Slow Nuclear Velocities

We investigate two well-known approaches for extending the fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) algorithm to periodic time-dependent couplings. The first formalism acts as if the instantaneous adiabatic electronic states were standard adiabatic states, which just happen to evolve in time. The second formalism replaces the role of the usual adiabatic states by the time-independent adiabatic Floquet states. For a set of modified Tully model problems, the Floquet FSSH (F-FSSH) formalism gives a better estimate for both transmission and reflection probabilities than the instantaneous adiabatic FSSH (IA-FSSH) formalism, especially for slow nuclear velocities. More importantly, only F-FSSH predicts the correct final scattering momentum. Finally, in order to use Floquet theory accurately, we find that it is crucial to account for the interference between wavepackets on different Floquet states. Our results should be of interest to all those interested in laser-induced molecular dynamics.

Spin-Orbit Interactions in Ultrafast Molecular Processes

We investigate spin-orbit interactions in ultrafast molecular processes employing the exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wave function. We revisit the original derivation by including spin-orbit coupling, and show how the dynamics driven by the time-dependent potential energy surface alleviates inconsistencies arising from different electronic representations. We propose a novel trajectory-based scheme to simulate spin-forbidden non-radiative processes, and we show its performance in the treatment of excited-state dynamics where spin-orbit effects couple different spin multiplets.

Exploring the write-in process in molecular quantum cellular automata: a combined modelingand first-principle approach

The molecular quantum cellular automata paradigm (m-QCA) offers a promising alternative framework to current CMOS implementations. A crucial aspect for implementing this technology concerns the construction of a device which effectively controls intramolecular charge-transfer processes. Tentative experimental implementations have been developed in which a voltage drop is created generating the forces that drive a molecule into a logic state. However, important factors such as the electric field profile, its possible time-dependency and the influence of temperature in the overall success of charge-transfer are relevant issues to be considered in the design of a reliable device. In this work, we theoretically study the role played by these processes in the overall intramolecular charge-transfer process. We have used a Landau-Zener (LZ) model, where different time-dependent electric field profiles have been simulated. The results have been further corroborated employing density functional tight-binding method. The role played by the nuclear motions in the electron-transfer process has been investigated beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation by computing the effect of the external electric field in the behavior of the potential energy surface. Hence, we demonstrate that the intramolecular charge-transfer process is a direct consequence of the coherent LZ nonadiabatic tunneling and the hybridization of the diabatic vibronic states which effectively reduces the trapping of the itinerant electron at the donor group.

Ab Initio Nonadiabatic Dynamics with Coupled Trajectories: A Rigorous Approach to Quantum (De)Coherence

We report the first nonadiabatic molecular dynamics study based on the exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wave function. Our approach (a coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical, CT-MQC, scheme) is based on the quantum-classical limit derived from systematic and controlled approximations to the full quantum-mechanical problem formulated in the exact-factorization framework. Its strength is the ability to correctly capture quantum (de)coherence effects in a trajectory-based approach to excited-state dynamics. We show this by benchmarking CT-MQC dynamics against a revised version of the popular fewest-switches surface-hopping scheme that is able to fix its well-documented overcoherence issue. The CT-MQC approach is successfully applied to investigation of the photochemistry (ring-opening) of oxirane in the gas phase, analyzing in detail the role of decoherence. This work represents a significant step forward in the establishment of the exact factorization as a powerful tool to study excited-state dynamics, not only for interpretation purposes but mainly for nonadiabatic ab initio molecular dynamics simulations.

On the Dynamics through a Conical Intersection

Conical intersections represent critical topological features of potential energy surfaces and open ultrafast nonradiative deactivation channels for photoexcited molecules. In the following, we investigate how this funneling picture is transposed in the eyes of the exact factorization formalism for a 2D model system. The exact factorization of the total molecular wave function leads to the fundamental concept of time-dependent potential energy surface and time-dependent vector potential, whose behavior during a dynamics through a conical intersection has up to now remained unexplored. Despite the fact that these quantities might be viewed as time-dependent generalizations of the adiabatic potential energy surfaces and the nonadiabatic coupling vectors, characteristic quantities appearing in the Born-Oppenheimer framework, we observe that they do not exhibit particular topological features in the region of conical intersection but still reflect the complex dynamics of the nuclear wavepacket.

Electronic non-adiabatic dynamics in enhanced ionization of isotopologues of hydrogen molecular ions from the exact factorization perspective

An exact-factorization perspective of enhanced ionization in isotopologues of H₂⁺ demonstrates the concept of the exact potential driving the electrons in non-adiabatic motion of molecules in strong fields, and sets a new platform for introducing various approximations.

Quantum-Classical Nonadiabatic Dynamics: Coupled- vs Independent-Trajectory Methods

Trajectory-based mixed quantum-classical approaches to coupled electron-nuclear dynamics suffer from well-studied problems such as the lack of (or incorrect account for) decoherence in the trajectory surface hopping method and the inability of reproducing the spatial splitting of a nuclear wave packet in Ehrenfest-like dynamics. In the context of electronic nonadiabatic processes, these problems can result in wrong predictions for quantum populations and in unphysical outcomes for the nuclear dynamics. In this paper, we propose a solution to these issues by approximating the coupled electronic and nuclear equations within the framework of the exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wave function. We present a simple quantum-classical scheme based on coupled classical trajectories and test it against the full quantum mechanical solution from wave packet dynamics for some model situations which represent particularly challenging problems for the above-mentioned traditional methods.

Exact Potential Driving the Electron Dynamics in Enhanced Ionization of H(2)(+)

It was recently shown that the exact factorization of the electron-nuclear wave function allows the construction of a Schrödinger equation for the electronic system, in which the potential contains exactly the effect of coupling to the nuclear degrees of freedom and any external fields. Here we study the exact potential acting on the electron in charge-resonance enhanced ionization in a model one-dimensional H(2)(+) molecule. We show there can be significant differences between the exact potential and that used in the traditional quasistatic analyses, arising from nonadiabatic coupling to the nuclear system, and that these are crucial to include for accurate simulations of time-resolved ionization dynamics and predictions of the ionization yield.
