A Long-Life and Excellent Rate-Capability Aqueous Zn-Benzoquinone Battery Enabled by Iodine-Catalyzed Cathode

Benzoquinone (BQ) is considered to be a desirable cathode material for aqueous zinc-based batteries. The major limitations of BQ electrode are the severe sublimation and poor electrical conductivity, which results in serious mass loss during electrode preparation and inferior rate performance. In this study, iodine (I2 ) species are utilized as an efficient catalyst for the highly reversible conversion of BQ/BQ2- couple in the Zn-BQ battery system, wherein N-doped porous carbon is employed as a host material for anchoring the BQ molecule. In the combination electrode (denoted as BQ-I@NPC) with 1wt% I2 additive where I2 can serve as a carrier to accelerates the Zn2+ transmission, and reduce the voltage hysteresis of the electrode. As a result, the BQ-I@NPC cathode delivers a high specific capacity of ≈482 mAh g-1 at 0.25 A g-1 , realizing a high energy density of 545 Wh kg-1 (based on BQ), which is the highest values among reported organic cathode materials for aqueous Zn-based batteries. Also, a high BQ loading (8 mg cm-2 ) can be attained, and achieving a superior cycling stability with a capacity retention of ≈80% after 20,000 times at 10 C. The work proposes an effective approach toward high performance organic electrode materials.

Parent anion radical formation in coenzyme Q0: Breaking ubiquinone family rules

We report electron attachment (EA) measurements for the parent anion radical formation from coenzyme Q₀ (CoQ₀) at low electron energies (<2 eV) along with quantum chemical calculations. CoQ₀ may be considered a prototype for the electron withdrawing properties of the larger CoQ _n molecules, in particular ubiquinone (CoQ₁₀), an electron carrier in aerobic cell respiration. Herein, we show that the mechanisms for the parent anion radical formation of CoQ₀ and CoQ _n (n = 1,2,4) are remarkably distinct. Reported EA data for CoQ₁, CoQ₂, CoQ₄ and para-benzoquinone indicated stabilization of the parent anion radicals around 1.2-1.4 eV. In contrast, we observe for the yield of the parent anion radical of CoQ₀ a sharp peak at ∼ 0 eV, a shoulder at 0.07 eV and a peak around 0.49 eV. Although the mechanisms for the latter feature remain unclear, our calculations suggest that a dipole bound state (DBS) would account for the lower energy signals. Additionally, the isoprenoid side chains in CoQ _n (n = 1,2,4) molecules seem to influence the DBS formation for these compounds. In contrast, the side chains enhance the parent anion radical stabilization around 1.4 eV. The absence of parent anion radical formation around 1.4 eV for CoQ₀ can be attributed to the short auto-ionization lifetimes. The present results shed light on the underappreciated role played by the side chains in the stabilization of the parent anion radical. The isoprenoid tails should be viewed as co-responsible for the electron-accepting properties of ubiquinone, not mere spectators of electron transfer reactions.

Statistical vibrational autodetachment and radiative cooling rates of para-benzoquinone

We report measurements of the statistical vibrational autodetachment (VAD, also called thermionic emission) and radiative cooling rates of isolated para-benzoquinone (pBQ, C₆H₄O₂) radical anions using the cryogenic electrostatic ion storage ring facility DESIREE. The results are interpreted using master equation simulations with rate coefficients calculated using statistical detailed balance theory. The VAD rate is determined by measuring the time-dependent yield of neutral pBQ due to spontaneous electron emission from a highly-excited ensemble of anions formed in an electron-attachment ion source. Competition with radiative cooling quenches the VAD rate after a critical time of τ_c = 11.00(5) ms. Master equation simulations which reproduce the VAD yield provide an estimate of the initial effective vibrational temperature of the ions of 1100(20) K, and provide insight into the anion formation scenario. A second measurement of the radiative cooling rate of pBQ^- stored for up to 0.5 s was achieved using time-dependent photodetachment action spectroscopy across the ²A_u ← ²B_2g and ²B_2u ← ²B_2g transitions. The rate at which hot-band contributions fade from the action spectrum is quantified by non-negative matrix factorisation. This is found to be commensurate with the average vibrational energy extracted from the simulations, with 1/e lifetimes of 0.16(3) s and 0.1602(7) s, respectively. Implications for astrochemistry are discussed.

Ubiquinone molecules have a high biological relevance due to their action as electron carriers in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Here, we studied the dissociative interaction of free electrons with CoQ₀ , the smallest ubiquinone derivative with no isoprenyl units, and its fully reduced form, 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methylhydroquinone (CoQ₀ H₂ ), an ubiquinol derivative. The anionic products produced upon dissociative electron attachment (DEA) were detected by quadrupole mass spectrometry and studied theoretically through quantum chemical and electron scattering calculations. Despite the structural similarity of the two studied molecules, remarkably only a few DEA reactions are present for both compounds, such as abstraction of a neutral hydrogen atom or the release of a negatively charged methyl group. While the loss of a neutral methyl group represents the most abundant reaction observed in DEA to CoQ₀ , this pathway is not observed for CoQ₀ H₂ . Instead, the loss of a neutral OH radical from the CoQ₀ H₂ temporary negative ion is observed as the most abundant reaction channel. Overall, this study gives insights into electron attachment properties of simple derivatives of more complex molecules found in biochemical pathways.

Non-statistical fragmentation in photo-activated flavin mononucleotide anions

The spectroscopy and photo-induced dissociation of flavin mononucleotide anions in vacuo are investigated over the 300-500 nm wavelength range. Comparison of the dependence of fragment ion yields as a function of deposited photon energy with calculated dissociation energies and collision-induced dissociation measurements performed under single-collision conditions suggests that a substantial fraction of photo-activated ions decompose through non-statistical fragmentation pathways. Among these pathways is the dominant photo-induced fragmentation channel, the loss of a fragment identified as formylmethylflavin. The fragment ion specific action spectra reveal electronic transition energies close to those for flavins in solution and previously published gas-phase measurements, although the photo-fragment yield upon excitation of the S₂ ← S₀ transition appears to be suppressed.

Photoelectron spectroscopy of para-benzoquinone cluster anions

The photoelectron spectra of para-benzoquinone radical cluster anions, (pBQ)_n ^- (n = 2-4), taken at hv = 4.00 eV are presented and compared with the photoelectron spectrum of the monomer (n = 1). For all clusters, a direct detachment peak can be identified, and the incremental increase in the vertical detachment energy of ∼0.4 eV n^-1 predominantly reflects the increase in cohesion energy as the cluster size increases. For all clusters, excitation also leads to low energy electrons that are produced by thermionic emission from ground electronic state anionic species, indicating that resonances are excited at this photon energy. For n = 3 and 4, photoelectron features at lower binding energy are observed which can be assigned to photodetachment from pBQ^- for n = 3 and both pBQ^- and (pBQ)₂ ^- for n = 4. These observations indicate that the cluster dissociates on the time scale of the laser pulse (∼5 ns). The present results are discussed in the context of related quinone cluster anions.

Enhancement of electron accepting ability of para-benzoquinone by a single water molecule

Electron acceptors built upon the para-benzoquinone (pBQ) electrophore are ubiquitous in nature. Here, we present a frequency-resolved photoelectron spectroscopic study of the cold pBQ radical anion, pBQ-, solvated by a single water molecule, as commonly encountered in nature. Our results show that the electron accepting ability is enhanced by the single water molecule and by elevated temperatures.

Ion mobility action spectroscopy of flavin dianions reveals deprotomer-dependent photochemistry

Photo-induced proton transfer, deprotomer-dependent photochemistry, and intramolecular charge transfer in flavin anions are investigated using action spectroscopy.

The intrinsic optical properties and photochemistry of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) dianions are investigated using a combination of tandem ion mobility spectrometry and action spectroscopy. Two principal isomers are observed, the more stable form being deprotonated on the isoalloxazine group and a phosphate (N-3,PO₄ deprotomer), and the other on the two phosphates (PO₄,PO₄ deprotomer). Ion mobility data and electronic action spectra suggest that photo-induced proton transfer occurs from the isoalloxazine group to a phosphate group, converting the PO₄,PO₄ deprotomer to the N-3,PO₄ deprotomer. Comparisons of the isomer selective action spectra of FAD dianions and flavin monoanions with solution spectra and gas-phase photodissociation action spectra suggests that solvation shifts the electronic absorption of the deprotonated isoalloxazine group to higher energy. This is interpreted as evidence for significant charge transfer in the lowest optical transition of deprotonated isoalloxazine. Overall, this work demonstrates that the site of deprotonation of flavin anions strongly affects their electronic absorptions and photochemistry.

Photo-induced proton-coupled electron transfer and dissociation of isolated flavin adenine dinucleotide mono-anions

The intrinsic optical absorption spectrum and photo-dissociation pathways of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) mono-anions isolated in vacuo are probed using photo-induced dissociation (PID) action spectroscopy. The main photo-products are lumichrome and formylmethylflavin. Evidence is presented that the dissociation pathway leading to these products is non-statistical i.e. occurs during the excited state lifetime. This suggests that the stacking of the adenine and alloxazine chromophores, which enables ultra-fast quenching of the flavin excited state by photo-induced electron transfer in aqueous solution, is inhibited in vacuo. These results provide firm experimental confirmation that lumichrome formation from flavins proceeds via photo-induced, intra-molecular proton-coupled electron transfer.
