Abstract
This study focuses on the reaction mechanisms involving triphenylphosphine (PPh3) derivatives, benzyne, and CO2, giving mechanistic insights into two competing pathways: Path a, which involves direct C-P bond formation, and Path b, which progresses via a [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Comprehensive computational analysis by energy decomposition analysis (EDA) and deformation density insights was employed to elucidate the electronic and steric factors influencing the reactivity and selectivity of PPh3 derivatives. The results reveal that Path b is energetically and kinetically favored. In Path a, substantial repulsive interactions (ΔE rep), especially for electron-withdrawing substituents, hinder C-P bond formation, making this pathway unfavorable, while Path b benefits from compensatory effects between interaction energies, with electron-releasing para-substituents, such as NHMe and OMe, increasing stabilization by enhancing ΔE orb contributions. Substituents in meta positions show greater distortion energies (ΔE dist), which limit their stabilizing effects compared to para-substituents. The deformation density analysis of transition states (TS1(b) and TS2(b)) emphasizes the crucial role of Pauli deformation (Δρ Pauli) and orbital deformation (Δρ Orb) in modulating stability. Para-substituents exhibit stronger electronic effects, reducing ΔE int more effectively than meta-substituents, which increase ΔE dist. This positional dependence underscores the importance of substituent design in optimizing reactivity.

Abstract
Torsional motions along the FCCO and HOCC dihedrals lead to the five unique conformations of 2-fluoroethanol, of which the conformer that is gauche along both dihedrals has the lowest energy. In this work, we explore how nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) manifest in the structural parameters of the lowest energy conformer, in the intramolecular free energy landscape along the FCCO and HOCC dihedrals, and also in the infrared spectrum of the title molecule, through the use of path integral simulations. We have first developed a full dimensional potential energy surface using the reaction surface Hamiltonian framework. On this potential, we have carried out path integral molecular dynamics simulations at several temperatures starting from the minimum energy well to explore structural influences of NQEs including geometrical markers of the interaction between the OH and F groups. From the computed free energy landscapes, significant reduction of the torsional barrier is found at low temperature near the cis region of the dihedrals, which can be understood through the trends in the radii of gyration of the atomic ring polymers. We find that the inclusion of NQEs in the computation of infrared spectrum is important to obtain good agreement with the experimental band positions.

Abstract
Fluorine gauche effects are conformational properties of 2-fluoroethanes often applied in modern molecular designs. However, the physical origins of fluorine gauche effects are not well understood, with the consensus favoring the established hyperconjugation theory over an emerging electrostatic model. Using a series of model systems, we show that a shift to fluorine gauche effects can be influenced by intramolecular CH⋅⋅⋅π aromatic interactions, a through-space event. Modulating the π-ring (forming the aromatic interaction) with substituent groups resulted in a linear Hammett relationship, thus indicating that the CH⋅⋅⋅π interaction has electrostatic features. For instance, attaching a nitro group (an electron-withdrawing substituent) to the π-ring weakened the CH⋅⋅⋅π interaction and led to a gauche preference, whereas an anti conformer is preferred with amine as substituent. The experimental results performed by using proton NMR spectroscopy are corroborated by gas-phase DFT calculations and solid-state X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
The gauche conformer in 1-X,2-Y-disubstituted ethanes, that is, the staggered orientation in which X and Y are in closer contact, is only favored for relatively small substituents that do not give rise to large X···Y steric repulsion. For more diffuse substituents, weakly attractive orbital interactions between antiperiplanar bonds (i.e., hyperconjugation) cannot overrule the repulsive forces between X and Y. Our quantum chemical analyses of the rotational isomerism of XCH2CH2Y (X = F, OH; Y = I) at ZORA-BP86-D3(BJ)/QZ4P reveal that indeed the anti conformer is generally favored due to a less destabilizing I···F and I···O-H steric repulsion. The only case when the gauche conformer is preferred is when the hydroxyl hydrogen is oriented toward the iodine atom in the 2-iodoethanol. This is because of the significantly stabilizing covalent component of the I···H-O intramolecular hydrogen bond. Therefore, we show that strong intramolecular interactions can overcome the steric repulsion between bulky substituents in 1,2-disubstituted ethanes and cause the gauche effect. Our quantum chemical computations have guided nuclear magnetic resonance experiments that confirm the increase in the gauche population as X goes from F to OH.

Abstract
A quantum chemical investigation of the stability of compounds with identical formulas was carried out on 23 classes of compounds made of C, N, P, O and S atoms as core structures and halogens H, F, Cl, Br and I as substituents. All possible structures were generated and investigated by quantum mechanical methods. The prevalence of a formula in which its Z configuration, gauche conformation or meta isomer is the most stable form is calculated and discussed. Quantitative and qualitative models to explain the stability of the 23 classes of halogenated compounds were also proposed.

Abstract
We have quantum chemically investigated the rotational isomerism of 1,2-dihaloethanes XCH2 CH2 X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) at ZORA-BP86-D3(BJ)/QZ4P. Our Kohn-Sham molecular orbital (KS-MO) analyses reveal that hyperconjugative orbital interactions favor the gauche conformation in all cases (X = F-I), not only for X = F as in the current model of this so-called gauche effect. We show that, instead, it is the interplay of hyperconjugation with Pauli repulsion between lone-pair-type orbitals on the halogen substituents that constitutes the causal mechanism for the gauche effect. Thus, only in the case of the relatively small fluorine atoms, steric Pauli repulsion is too weak to overrule the gauche preference of the hyperconjugative orbital interactions. For the larger halogens, X⋅⋅⋅X steric Pauli repulsion becomes sufficiently destabilizing to shift the energetic preference from gauche to anti, despite the opposite preference of hyperconjugation.

Abstract
For 2-X-ethanols, where X = F, OH, or NH2, the gauche conformer is favored over the trans conformer by at least 2 kcal/mol. Initially, this preference, ΔE, was attributed to an intramolecular hydrogen bond, IMHB, between the OH and X groups. Over the years, this conclusion has been challenged by two major arguments. One claim is that the entirety of ΔE can be accounted for by the gauche effect. Against this, calculations using five different methods show that the maximum contribution of the gauche effect to ΔE is less than 1 kcal/mol. A second argument employs the quantum theory of atoms in molecules to contend that the absence of a bond critical point (BCP) between the OH and X groups in 2-X-ethanols denotes the lack of an IMHB. By looking at the 2-X-ethanols at fixed XCCO torsional angles ranging from 0° to 60°, it is shown that the BCP criterion is inconsistent with other properties such as energy, bond lengths, and stretching frequencies. These inconsistencies are removed when the theory of noncovalent interactions is used. The IMHBs in 2-X-ethanols are found to be similar in form but smaller in magnitude than their intermolecular counterparts. This work concludes that 2-X-ethanols form IMHBs.

Abstract
The dehalogenation of 2-chloroethanol (2ClEtOH) in the gas phase with and without the participation of catalytic water molecules has been investigated using methods rooted into the density functional theory. The well-known HCl elimination leading to vinyl alcohol (VA) was compared to the alternative elimination route toward oxirane and shown to be kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable. However, the isomerization of VA to acetaldehyde in the gas phase, in the absence of water, was shown to be kinetically and thermodynamically less favorable than the recombination of VA and HCl to form the isomeric 1-chloroethanol (1ClEtOH) species. At the ωB97X-D/cc-pVTZ level of calculation, this species is more stable than 2ClEtOH by about 6 kcal mol-1 at 298 K, and the reaction barrier for VA to 1ClEtOH is 23 kcal mol-1 versus 55 kcal mol-1 for the direct transformation of VA to acetaldehyde. In a successive step, 1ClEtOH can decompose directly to acetaldehyde and HCl with a lower barrier (29 kcal mol-1) than that of VA to the same products (55 kcal mol-1). The calculations were repeated using a single ancillary water molecule (W) in the complexes 2ClEtOH_W and 1ClEtOH_W. The latter adduct is now more stable than 2ClEtOH_W by about 8 kcal mol-1 at 298 K, implying that the water molecule increased the already higher stability of 1ClEtOH in the gas phase. However, this catalytic water molecule lowers dramatically the barrier for the interconversion of VA to acetaldehyde (from 55 to 7 kcal mol-1). This barrier is now smaller than the one for the conversion to 1ClEtOH (which also decreases, but not so much, from 23 to 13 kcal mol-1). Thus, it is concluded that while 1ClEtOH may be a plausible intermediate in the gas phase dehalogenation of 2ClEtOH, it is unlikely that it plays a major role in water complexes (or, by inference, aqueous solution). It is also shown that neither in the gas phase nor in the cluster with one water molecule, the oxirane path is more favorable than the VA alcohol path. Additionally, a direct conversion of 2ClEtOH to 1ClEtOH through a transition state which resembles a VA molecule in a complex with a chlorine atom and a hydrogen atom on both sides of this planar species was found. This reaction path has also lower activation energy than the conversion to oxirane but not as low as the conversion to VA.

Abstract
The mechanism of the Ni0 -catalyzed reductive carboxylation reaction of C(sp2 )-O and C(sp3 )-O bonds in aromatic esters with CO2 to access valuable carboxylic acids was comprehensively studied by using DFT calculations. Computational results revealed that this transformation was composed of several key steps: C-O bond cleavage, reductive elimination, and/or CO2 insertion. Of these steps, C-O bond cleavage was found to be rate-determining, and it occurred through either oxidative addition to form a NiII intermediate, or a radical pathway that involved a bimetallic species to generate two NiI species through homolytic dissociation of the C-O bond. DFT calculations revealed that the oxidative addition step was preferred in the reductive carboxylation reactions of C(sp2 )-O and C(sp3 )-O bonds in substrates with extended π systems. In contrast, oxidative addition was highly disfavored when traceless directing groups were involved in the reductive coupling of substrates without extended π systems. In such cases, the presence of traceless directing groups allowed for docking of a second Ni0 catalyst, and the reactions proceed through a bimetallic radical pathway, rather than through concerted oxidative addition, to afford two NiI species both kinetically and thermodynamically. These theoretical mechanistic insights into the reductive carboxylation reactions of C-O bonds were also employed to investigate several experimentally observed phenomena, including ligand-dependent reactivity and site-selectivity.

Abstract
In this computational study the interaction of NO., NO+, and NO- with H2O: [NO--H2O]., 1 ., [NO--H2O]+, 1 + , and [NO--H2O]-, 1 - was analysed. The optimized geometries indicate that the relative position of NO and H2O depends on the total charge: (ON.--H-OH), (NO---H-OH), and (ON+--OH2). Moreover, atomic spin density along with frontier molecular orbitals help to identify the preferred reduction or oxidation sites on the nitric oxide. Thus, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), electron localization function (ELF), and natural bond-bond polarizability (NBBP) methods aid to quantify the electron delocalization level between NO and H2O, 1 + > 1 . > 1 - , and show the predominantly ionic, and covalent character to inter-molecular, and intra-molecular chemical bonds, respectively. Furthermore, the natural bond orbital (NBO) and localized molecular orbital energy decomposition analysis (LMO-EDA) methods enable energy analyses of the interaction between NO and H2O in the complexes 1 ., 1 + , and 1 - . Where, the first method showed that the interaction between the natural bond orbitals in 1 - is more favorable, than in 1 + , and less in 1 ., however, the second method designates that the total interaction energy is lower for 1 + in relation to 1 - and 1 ., due mainly to the electrostatic component. As a final point, analysis of the electrostatic potential surfaces provides a clear and direct explanation for the relative position of the monomers. It also shows that the predominant Coulombic attraction between H2O and the charged NO+, and NO- compounds will be stronger in relation to the neutral NO.. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
