On the Distinctive Hardness, Anti-Corrosion Properties and Mechanisms of Flame-Deposited Carbon Coating with a Hierarchical Structure in Contrast to a Graphene Layer via Chemical Vapor Deposition

Two carbonaceous (amorphous carbon and graphene) coatings were catalytically grown on bulk Ni plates. It was found that the flame-deposited carbon (FDC) layers exhibited a unique hierarchical structure with the formation of FDC/Ni nano-interlocking interface. The effect of the flame coating time on its corrosion protective efficiency (PE) was studied and compared with that of graphene coating produced via chemical vapor deposition. The FDC grown for 10 min exhibited a PE of 92.7%, which was much greater than that of the graphene coating (75.6%). The anti-corrosive mechanisms of both coatings were revealed and compared. For graphene coatings, the higher reaction temperature than that for FDC resulted in large grain boundaries inherent in the coating. Such boundaries were weak points and easily initiated grain boundary corrosion. In contrast, corrosion started at only certain local defects in FDC layers, whose unique interface structure likely promoted its PE as well. Moreover, after the coating process, the hardness of FDC-coated Ni remained almost unchanged, in contrast to that of graphene-coated samples (reduced by ~30%). This is suggested to be related to the crystal structure evolution of the Ni substrate caused by the heat treatment accompanying the coating process.

FeSi2: a two-dimensional ferromagnet containing planar hexacoordinate Fe atoms

As an unconventional bonding pattern different from conventional chemistry, the concept of planar hypercoordinate atoms was first proposed in the molecular system, and it has been recently extended to 2D periodic systems. Using first-principles calculations, herein we predict a stable FeSi₂ monolayer with planar hexacoordinate Fe atoms. Due to its abundant multicenter bonds, the FeSi₂ monolayer shows excellent thermal and kinetic stability, anisotropic mechanical properties and room-temperature ferromagnetism (T _C ∼360 K). Furthermore, we have demonstrated the feasibility of directly growing an FeSi₂ monolayer on a Si (110) substrate while maintaining the novel electronic and magnetic properties of the freestanding monolayer. The FeSi₂ monolayer synthesized in this way would be compatible with the mature silicon semiconductor technology and could be utilized for spintronic devices.

Ångstrom-Scale, Atomically Thin 2D Materials for Corrosion Mitigation and Passivation

Metal deterioration via corrosion is a ubiquitous and persistent problem. Ångstrom-scale, atomically thin 2D materials are promising candidates for effective, robust, and economical corrosion passivation coatings due to their ultimate thinness and excellent mechanical and electrical properties. This review focuses on elucidating the mechanism of 2D materials in corrosion mitigation and passivation related to their physicochemical properties and variations, such as defects, out-of-plane deformations, interfacial states, temporal and thickness variations, etc. In addition, this review discusses recent progress and developments of 2D material coatings for corrosion mitigation and passivation as well as the significant challenges to overcome in the future.

CVD Graphene/Ni Interface Evolution in Sulfuric Electrolyte

Systems comprising single and multilayer graphene deposited on metals and immersed in acid environments have been investigated, with the aim of elucidating the mechanisms involved, for instance, in hydrogen production or metal protection from corrosion. In this work, a relevant system, namely chemical vapor deposited (CVD) multilayer graphene/Ni (MLGr/Ni), is studied when immersed in a diluted sulfuric electrolyte. The MLGr/Ni electrochemical and morphological properties are studied in situ and interpreted in light of the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrode behavior, when immersed in the same electrolyte. Following this interpretative framework, the dominant role of the Ni substrate in hydrogen production is clarified.

Layer Control of Tubular Graphene for Corrosion Inhibition of Nickel Wires

Corrosion protection of complex surface is an active area of research due to its importance to commercial applications such as electrochemical fabrication. However, conventional coatings exhibit limited conductivity, thermal stability, and durability and are thus not suitable. Recent work has shown the potential of graphene, a two-dimensional carbon allotrope, for corrosion protection. The studies, however, limited themselves to simple planar geometries that provide limited insight in the applicability to relevant morphologies such as mesh electrodes and roughened surfaces. We here study the corrosion protection ability of tubular graphene (TG) on Ni-wires as a model system for such complex geometries. TG-covered Ni wires of approximately 50 μm diameters were produced by the annealing of cellulose acetate (CA) on Ni. The high quality of the TG coating was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrical measurements. We show that the graphene layer number could be controlled by adjusting the CA membrane quantity. We found a direct relation between the degree of corrosion inhibition with the variation of graphene layer number. The increase of graphene layers on a Ni surface could enhance its corrosion inhibition in acidic, basic, and marine environments, which shows the potential of our approach for future applications.
