Abstract
The exploration of environmentally friendly, less toxic, sustained-release insecticide is increasing with the growing demand for food to meet the requirements of the expanding population. As a sustained-release carrier, the unique, environmentally friendly intelligent responsive hydrogel system is an important factor in improving the efficiency of insecticide utilization and accurate release. In this study, we developed a facile approach for incorporating the natural compound rosin (dehydroabietic acid, DA) and zinc ions (Zn2+) into a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel network to construct a controlled-release hydrogel carrier (DA-PNIPAM-Zn2+). Then, the model insecticide avermectin (AVM) was encapsulated in the carrier at a drug loading rate of 36.32% to form AVM@DA-PNIPAM-Zn2+. Surprisingly, the smart controlled carrier exhibited environmental responsiveness, strongly enhanced mechanical properties, self-healing ability, hydrophobicity, and photostability to ensure a balance between environmental friendliness and the precision of the drug release. The release experiments showed that the carboxyl and amide groups in the polymer chains alter the intermolecular forces within the hydrogel meshes and ingredient diffusion by changing temperatures (25 and 40 °C) and pH values (5.8, 7.4, and 8.5), leading to different release behaviors. The insecticidal activity of the AVM@DA-PNIPAM-Zn2+ against oriental armyworms was good, with an effective minimum toxicity toward aquatic animals. Therefore, AVM@DA-PNIPAM-Zn2+ is an effective drug delivery system against oriental armyworms. We anticipate that this ecofriendly, sustainable, smart-response carrier may broaden the utilization rosin and its possible applications in the agricultural sector.

Abstract
Present study focuses on the use of a biodegradable and cost-effective cation exchanger for removal of Cr (VI) metal ions from water sources. Semi-IPN was prepared through grafting of acrylamide onto agar-polyvinyl alcohol backbone in presence of boric acid and ammonium per sulphate as crosslinker-initiator system. Graft copolymer was converted to cation exchanger through phosphorylation. Characterization was done using methods such as FTIR, SEM-EDX and XRD. Semi-IPN exhibited higher thermal resistance. The findings revealed that the optimum conditions for Cr (VI) removal are pH = 4.0; contact time (min) = 360; adsorbent dose (mg) = 125 and metal ion concentration(mg/L) =2. The adsorption kinetics of Cr (VI) ions are best fit by the pseudo second order kinetic with 0.99 R2 and Kf (rate constant) was found to be 0.97 thereby supporting the Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption isotherm models used in this study were consistent with the Freundlich model, but the pseudo second order model was the most accurate description of the adsorption kinetics. The present investigation showed an excellent potential with 85 % adsorption capacity for the removal of Cr (VI). Moreover, reusability studies showed that the cation exchanger can be used effectively up to four cycles.

Abstract
In recent times, biopolymer-metal oxide nanocomposites have gained prominent importance in the attenuation of environmental toxicants from aqueous phase. But lanthanide oxide-based biopolymer nanocomposites have scantly been evaluated for their adsorption potential. A novel guar gum-polyacrylamide/erbium oxide nanocomposite (GG-PAAm/Er2O3 NC) adsorbent was synthesized by copolymerization of guar gum (GG) and acrylamide (AAm) utilizing N-N′-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and Er2O3 as a reinforcing agent. The adsorptive efficacy of GG-PAAm/Er2O3 nanocomposite was evaluated using nile blue (NB) as a model pollutant dye from aquatic system. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The optimal process parameters, which include dosage (0.8 g/L), agitation time (40 min), initial solution pH (6), and initial NB concentration (80 mg/L) were determined by batch methodology. The equilibrium data for NB confiscation was better expressed by Langmuir isotherm model, with maximal adsorption effectiveness (Qm) of 225.88 mg NB/g demonstrating the actively monolayer adsorption onto homogeneous surface of GG-PAAm/Er2O3 NC. The kinetics of NB sorption process onto GG-PAAm/Er2O3 NC was reliable with pseudo-second order model. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH° (15–17 kJ/mol) and ΔS° (0.079–0.087 kJ/mol/K), and − ΔG° (8.81–10.55 kJ/mol) for NB validated the endothermic, an increased randomness at the GG-PAAm/Er2O3–NB interface, and spontaneity and feasibility of the process, respectively. The spent nanocomposite was effectively regenerated with NaOH, and could be reused proficiently for five runs demonstrating the high reusability potential of the nanocomposite. The commendable removal efficiency and high reusability of GG-PAAm/Er2O3 NC recommended it to be a highly competent adsorbent for cationic dyes particularly NB diminution from aqueous waste.

Abstract
The current investigation presents a green mechanochemical procedure for the synthesis of a special kind of rubber-compatible organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) for use in the inner liner compound of tires. The compatibility character of the OMMT arises from the mechanochemical reaction of the raw bentonite mineral and gum rosin as some of the organic constituents of the inner liner composition. The monitoring of OMMT synthesis by various characterization techniques reveals that gum rosin gradually intercalates into the montmorillonite (MMT) galleries during milling and increases the interlayer spacing to 41.1 ± 0.5 Å. The findings confirm the simultaneous formation of single- or few-layered OMMT platelets with average sizes from the sub-micron range up to several micrometers during the milling process. The mechanical properties of the OMMT/rubber nanocomposite, such as tensile strength, tear resistance and elongation, present a good enhancement in comparison to the un-modified material. Moreover, the organo-modification of the inner liner composition also leads to a property improvement of about 50%.

Abstract
Application of machine-learning methods to assess the batch adsorption of malachite green (MG) dye on chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/zeolite imidazolate frameworks membrane adsorbents (CPZ) was investigated in this study. Our previous research results proved the suitability of the CPZ membranes for wastewater decoloring. In the current work, the residence time was combined with the other operational variables i.e., pH, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dose (AD), to obtain the possible interactions involved in nonequilibrium adsorption. Two well-known soft-computing approaches, multi-layer perceptron adaptive neural network (MLP-ANN) and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), were selected among different machine learning alternatives and then, comprehensively compared with each other considering reliability and accuracy for a 60 number of runs. The ANFIS structure with nine centers of clusters could predict the adsorption performance better than the ANN approach. Root mean square error (RMSE) and R-square were obtained 0.01822 and 0.9958 for the test data, respectively. The interpretability test resulted a linear trend predicted by the model and disclosed that the maximum value of the removal efficiency (99.5%) could be obtained when the amount of the inputs set to the upper limit. Lastly, the sensitivity analysis uncovered that the residence time has a decisive effect (relevancy factor > 80%) on the removal efficiency. According to the results, ANFIS is an effective and reliable tool to optimize and intensify the membrane adsorption process.

Abstract
The synthesis of three kinds of sorbents is described. The first kind was a hydrophobic nanofiber as a specific sorbent for non-polar compounds. The second one was a hydrophilic nanofiber as a specific sorbent for polar compounds and the third one was a generic sorbent synthesized from hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. The functional groups were natural compounds extracted from aloin plant and gum of pine tree. The aloin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rosin/PAN, and aloin/rosin/PAN electrospun nanofibers were synthesized through electrospinning strategy and then characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thereafter, the synthesized sorbents were used in microextraction using the packed syringe (MEPS) method. The determination was conducted using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Under the optimum condition, the method using aloin/rosin/PAN nanofibers as a sorbent showed a good linearity in the range 1.0-250 ng mL-1 for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (as a model for non-polar compounds) and 1.0-200 ng mL-1 for phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (CAPs) (as a model for polar compounds) with correlation coefficient (R2) higher than 0.997. Limits of detections (LODs) for PAHs and CAPs were in the range 0.1-0.3 ng mL-1 and 0.3-0.5 ng mL-1, respectively. The intra-day (n = 3) and inter-day (between 3 days) relative standard deviations (RDSs%) were in the range 6.3-12.3% for a single syringe. Finally, the MEPS-GC-FID method was applied as a simple, facile, and time and cost-effective method to analyze environmental, farm, and industrial water samples. Graphical abstract Herein, aloin/rosin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofiber was successfully synthesized and applied as a sorbent for extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as non-polar compounds and phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (CPAs) as polar compounds from aqueous solutions before GC-FID analysis.

Abstract
A comprehensive review of the publications about rosin-based chemicals has been compiled. Rosin, or colophony, is a natural, abundant, cheap and non-toxic raw material which can be easily modified to obtain numerous useful products, which makes it an excellent subject of innovative research, attracting growing interest in recent years. The last extensive review in this research area was published in 2008, so the current article contains the most promising, repeatable achievements in synthesis of rosin-derived chemicals, published in scientific literature from 2008 to 2018. The first part of the review includes low/medium molecule weight compounds: Especially intermediates, resins, monomers, curing agents, surfactants, medications and biocides. The second part is about macromolecules: mainly elastomers, polymers for biomedical applications, coatings, adhesives, surfactants, sorbents, organosilicons and polysaccharides. In conclusion, a critical evaluation of the publications in terms of data completeness has been carried out with an indication of the most promising directions of rosin-based chemicals development.

Abstract
In this paper, using amidoxime as a functional monomer, different generations of polyamidoxime dendrimer magnetic microspheres (Fe3O4@SiO2-g-PAMAM-AO) were fabricated to adsorb Pb2+ and Ni2+ in aqueous solution. The magnetic adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, XPS, TEM, EDS, TGA and BET. The effects of different factors (such as solution pH, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, adsorbent dosage etc.) on adsorption were evaluated. Fe3O4@SiO2-g-PAMAM-AO has a maximum Pb(ii) adsorption of 157.25 mg g−1 (100 mg L−1) at pH 5.5. Furthermore, Fe3O4@SiO2-g-PAMAM-AO showed an excellent adsorption performance for the removal of Ni(ii) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 191.78 mg g−1 (100 mg L−1) at pH 8.0. The sorption isotherm data fitted the Freundlich isotherm model well. Adsorption kinetics analysis showed that it was best described by the pseudo-second-order rate model. Desorption experiment results showed that the adsorbent can be reused in the adsorption–desorption cycles. In this paper, using amidoxime as a functional monomer, different generations of polyamidoxime dendrimer magnetic microspheres (Fe3O4@SiO2-g-PAMAM-AO) were fabricated to adsorb Pb2+ and Ni2+ in aqueous solution.![]()

Abstract
Resins derived from natural rosin have been described recently as environmentally-friendly adsorbents with potential uses in the clean-up of wastewaters and the treatment of drinking waters. However, in order to improve the design of these products it is important to understand the chemical mechanisms through which they act. We now describe the combined use of EPR spectroscopy and Cu(II) to probe directly the metal coordination environment after uptake by various rosin-derived products. Clear distinctions are demonstrated between the copper bonding in different adsorbent preparations. Furthermore, in the case of nitrogen cross-linked products, the spectral parameters also provide information on the number of nitrogen atoms in the immediate atomic environment of the copper atom when covalent bonding is involved. This methodology works well for adsorption from solutions containing multiple components, because only those that are paramagnetic are detected, and different types of paramagnetic metal ion produce distinctly different EPR spectra.

Abstract
Rosin-grafted polydimethylsiloxane (RGSO) was prepared via ring-opening reaction of glycidyl ester of rosin acid (ER) with hydroxy-terminated amino polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The structure of RGSO was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The effects of ER on relative molecular weight and rheological properties of RGSO were studied by gel permeation chromatography and rotational rheometry. Then, room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber modified with rosin was prepared using RGSO, hydroxy-terminated PDMS, tetraethoxysilane, and organotin catalyst. The structures and properties of RTV silicone rubbers were studied by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, a universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical analysis. The rosin-modified silicone rubber showed remarkably improved thermal and mechanical properties. Temperatures corresponding to 10% weight loss and maximum rate of weight loss increased by 66 °C and 177 °C, respectively. Moreover, the tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 138% and 113%. The role of rosin structure in improvement of properties is discussed. Rosin-grafted polydimethylsiloxane (RGSO) was prepared via ring-opening reaction of glycidyl ester of rosin acid (ER) with hydroxy-terminated amino polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).![]()

Abstract
A new octahedral ZnO/ZnFe2O4 heterostructure has been fabricated through a facile surfactant-free solvothermal method followed by thermal treatment. It exhibits a record-high adsorption capacity (up to 4983.0 mg·g−1) of malachite green (MG), which is a potentially harmful dye in prevalence and should be removed from wastewater and other aqueous solutions before discharging into the environment. The octahedral ZnO/ZnFe2O4 heterostructure also demonstrates strong selective adsorption towards MG from two kinds of mixed solutions: MG/methyl orange (MO) and MG/rhodamine B (RhB) mixtures, indicating its promise in water treatment.
