Abstract
1,4,5,8,9,12-Hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) is one of the smallest polyheterocyclic aromatic building blocks for forming conjugated metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs). However, the strong inter-molecular steric hindrance impedes the growth of HAT-based cMOFs. Here we employ on-surface synthesis to grow single-layer two-dimensional cMOFs of M3 (HAT)2 (M=Ni, Fe, Co). Using scanning tunnelling microscopy and density-functional theory (DFT) analysis, we resolve that the frameworks comprise a hexagonal lattice of HAT molecules and a Kagome lattice of metal atoms. The DFT analysis indicates that Ni, Co and Fe carry a magnetic moment of 1.1, 2.5, and 3.7 μB, respectively. We anticipate that the small π-conjugated core of HAT and strong bidentate chelating coordination give rise to appealing electronic and magnetic properties.

Abstract
![]()
Structural, magnetic,
and spectroscopic data on a Mn3+ spin-crossover complex
with Schiff base ligand 4-OMe-Sal2323, isolated in crystal
lattices with five different counteranions,
are reported. Complexes of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]X where X
= ClO4– (1), BF4– (2), NO3– (3), Br– (4), and I– (5) crystallize isotypically in the chiral
orthorhombic space group P21212 with a range of spin state preferences for the [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]+ complex cation over the temperature range
5–300 K. Complexes 1 and 2 are high-spin,
complex 4 undergoes a gradual and complete thermal spin
crossover, while complexes 3 and 5 show
stepped crossovers with different ratios of spin triplet and quintet
forms in the intermediate temperature range. High-field electron paramagnetic
resonance was used to measure the zero-field splitting parameters
associated with the spin triplet and quintet states at temperatures
below 10 K for complexes 4 and 2 with respective
values: DS=1 = +23.38(1) cm–1, ES=1 = +2.79(1) cm–1,
and DS=2 =
+6.9(3) cm–1, with a distribution of E parameters for the S = 2 state. Solid-state circular
dichroism (CD) spectra on high-spin complex 1 at room
temperature reveal a 2:1 ratio of enantiomers in the chiral conglomerate,
and solution CD measurements on the same sample in methanol show that
it is stable toward racemization. Solid-state UV–vis absorption
spectra on high-spin complex 1 and mixed S = 1/S = 2 sample 5 reveal different
intensities at higher energies, in line with the different electronic
composition. The statistical prevalence of homochiral crystallization
of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]+ in five lattices with
different achiral counterions suggests that the chirality may be directed
by the 4-OMe-Sal2323 ligand. Zero-field
splitting parameters of the spin triplet and
quintet forms of a spin-crossover Mn3+ complex stabilized
in lattices with different counterions are measured by high-field
electron paramagnetic resonance at different frequencies. The homochiral
crystallization of the enantiopure Δ or Λ forms of the
chelate complex, despite the use of achiral anions, is attributed
to the steric influence of the ligand substituent.

Abstract
Spin state preferences for a cationic Mn3+ chelate complex in four different crystal lattices are investigated by crystallography and SQUID magnetometry. The [MnL1]+ complex cation was prepared by complexation of Mn3+ to the Schiff base chelate formed from condensation of 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde and 1,2-bis(3-aminopropylamino)ethane. The cation was crystallized separately with three polyatomic counterions and in one case was found to cocrystallize with a percentage of unreacted 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde starting material. The spin state preferences of the four resultant complexes [MnL1]CF3SO3·xH2O, (1), [MnL1]PF6·xH2O, (2), [MnL1]PF6·xsal·xH2O, (2b), and [MnL1]BPh4, (3), were dependent on their ability to form strong intermolecular interactions. Complexes (1) and (2), which formed hydrogen bonds between [MnL1]+, lattice water and in one case also with counterion, showed an incomplete thermal spin crossover over the temperature range 5-300 K. In contrast, complex (3) with the BPh4-, counterion and no lattice water, was locked into the high spin state over the same temperature range, as was complex (2b), where inclusion of the 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde guest blocked the H-bonding interaction.

Abstract
The iron(ii) salt [Fe(bpp)2](isonicNO)2·HisonicNO·5H2O (1) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; isonicNO = isonicotinate N-oxide anion) undergoes a partial spin crossover (SCO) with symmetry breaking at T 1 = 167 K to a mixed-spin phase (50% high-spin (HS), 50% low-spin (LS)) that is metastable below T 2 = 116 K. Annealing the compound at lower temperatures results in a 100% LS phase that differs from the initial HS phase in the formation of a hydrogen bond (HB) between two water molecules (O4W and O5W) of crystallisation. Neutron crystallography experiments have also evidenced a proton displacement inside a short strong hydrogen bond (SSHB) between two isonicNO anions. Both phenomena can also be detected in the mixed-spin phase. 1 undergoes a light-induced excited-state spin trapping (LIESST) of the 100% HS phase, with breaking of the O4W⋯O5W HB and the onset of proton static disorder in the SSHB, indicating the presence of a light-induced activation energy barrier for proton motion. This excited state shows a stepped relaxation at T 1(LIESST) = 68 K and T 2(LIESST) = 76 K. Photocrystallography measurements after the first relaxation step reveal a single Fe site with an intermediate geometry, resulting from the random distribution of the HS and LS sites throughout the lattice.

Abstract
Rare loop-like isostructural one-dimensional coordination polymer (1D-CP) systems formulated as {Fe(DPIP)2(NCSe)2}n·4DMF (1) and {Fe(DPIP)2(NCSe)2}n·4DMF (2) were obtained by self-assembling FeII and pseudohalide NCX-(X = S, Se) ions in presence of the V-shaped bidentate bridging ligand, namely, N,N'-dipyridin-4-ylisophthalamide (DPIP), and were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, TGA, single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction. The magnetic studies show that complex 2 undergoes a complete thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) behavior centered at T1/2 = 120 K with ca. 5 K thermal hysteresis loop and light-induced excited spin state trapping effect (LIESST) with TLIESST = 65 K. However, either the homologous X = S (1) or the desolvated form of complex 2 is high spin at all temperatures, proving further the concerted synergy for the SCO of 2 between the intrinsic ligand field and that indirectly induced via hydrogen bond interaction. The current results provide valuable information for the design of new 1D SCO systems via the rational control of the cooperated effects derived from the intramolecular coordination bond and the intermolecular supramolecular interactions.

Abstract
Understanding the origin of cooperativity and the equilibrium temperature of transition (T1/2) displayed by the spin-crossover (SCO) compounds as well as controlling these parameters are of paramount importance for future applications. For this task, the occurrence of polymorphism, presented by a number of SCO complexes, may provide deep insight into the influence of the supramolecular organization on the SCO behavior. In this context, herein we present a novel family of mononuclear octahedral FeII complexes with formula cis-[Fe(bqen)(NCX)2], where bqen is the chelating tetradentate ligand N,N'-bis(8-quinolyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and X = S, Se. Depending on the preparation method, these compounds crystallize in either the orthorhombic or the trigonal symmetry systems. While the orthorhombic phase is composed of a racemic mixture of mononuclear complexes (polymorph I), the trigonal phase contains only one of the two possible enantiomers (Λ or Δ), thereby generating a chiral crystal (polymorph II). The four derivatives undergo SCO behavior with well-differentiated T1/2 values occurring in the interval 90-233 K. On one hand, T1/2 is about 110 K (polymorph I) and 87 K (polymorph II) higher for the selenocyanate derivatives in comparison to those for their thiocyanate counterparts. These differences in T1/2 are ascribed not only to the higher ligand field induced by the selenocyanate anion but also to a remarkable difference in the structural reorganization of the [FeN6] coordination core upon SCO. Likewise, the higher cooperativity observed for the thiocyanate derivatives seems to be related to their stronger intermolecular interactions within the crystal. On the other hand, T1/2 is about 53 K (thiocyanate) and 29 K (selenocyanate) higher for the trigonal polymorph II in comparison to those for the orthorhombic polymorph I. These differences, and the small changes observed in cooperativity, stem from the slightly different hetero- and homochiral crystal packing generated by the cis-[Fe(bqen)(NCX)2] molecules, which determines subtle adaptations in the intermolecular contacts and the FeII coordination core.

Abstract
Reducing hexaazatrinaphthylene (HAN) with potassium in the presence of 18-c-6 produces [{K(18-c-6)}HAN], which contains the S=1/2 radical [HAN](.-) . The [HAN](.-) radical can be transferred to the cobalt(II) amide [Co{N(SiMe3 )2 }2 ], forming [K(18-c-6)][(HAN){Co(N'')2 }3 ]; magnetic measurements on this compound reveal an S=4 spin system with strong cobalt-ligand antiferromagnetic exchange and J≈-290 cm(-1) (-2 J formalism). In contrast, the Co(II) centres in the unreduced analogue [(HAN){Co(N'')2 }3 ] are weakly coupled (J≈-4.4 cm(-1) ). The finding that [HAN](.-) can be synthesized as a stable salt and transferred to cobalt introduces potential new routes to magnetic materials based on strongly coupled, triangular HAN building blocks.
