Research progress on polybenzoxazine aerogels: Preparation, properties, composites and hybrids fabrication, applications

The unremitting pursuit of high-performance and multifunctional materials has consistently propelled modern industries forward, stimulating research and motivating progress in related fields. In such materials, polybenzoxazine (PBz) aerogel, which combines the virtues of PBz and aerogel, has attracted salient attention recently, emerging as a novel research focus in the realm of advanced materials. In this review, the preparation scheme, microscopic morphology, and fundamental characteristics of PBz aerogels are comprehensively summarized and discussed in anticipation of providing a clear understanding of the correlation between preparation process, structure, and properties. The effective strategies for enhancing the performance of PBz aerogels including composite fabrication and hybridization are highlighted. Moreover, the applications of PBz-based aerogels in various domains such as adsorption (including wastewater treatment, CO2 capture, and microwave adsorption), thermal insulation, energy storage as well as sensors are covered in detail. Furthermore, several obstacles and potential directions for subsequent research are delineated with a view to surmounting the prevailing constraints and achieving a realization of the shift from experimental exploration to practical applications.

Graphene oxide-based aerogel stimulates growth, mercury accumulation, photosynthesis-related gene expression, antioxidant efficiency and redox status in wheat under mercury exposure

Mercury (Hg) pollution is a global concern in cropland systems. Hg contamination causes a disruption in the growth, energy metabolism, redox balance, and photosynthetic activity of plants. In the removal of Hg toxicity, a recent critical strategy is the use of aerogels with biodegradability and biocompatibility. However, it is unknown how graphene oxide-based aerogels stimulate the defense systems in wheat plants exposed to Hg toxicity. Therefore, in this study, the photosynthetic, genetic, and biochemical effects of reduced graphene oxide aerogel treatments (gA; 50-100-250 mg L-1) were examined in wheat (Triticum aestivum) under Hg stress (50 μM HgCl2). The relative growth rate (RGR) significantly decreased (84%) in response to Hg stress. However, the reduced RGR and water relations (RWC) of wheat were improved by gA treatments. The impaired gas exchange levels (stomatal conductance, carbon assimilation rate, intercellular CO2 concentrations, and transpiration rate) caused by stress were reversed under Hg plus gAs. Additionally, stress hampered chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fo, Fv/Fm), and under Hg toxicity the expression of psaA genes was reduced (>0.4-fold), but psaB gene was significantly up-regulated (>3-fold) which are the genes involved in PSI. By increasing expression patterns of both genes relating to PSI, gAs reversed the adverse consequences on Fv/Fo and Fv/Fm in the presence of excessive Hg concentration. The activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) decreased under Hg toxicity. On the other hand, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), APX, GST, and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) increased following gA treatments against stress, leading to the successful elimination of toxic levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation (TBARS content) by decreasing the levels by about 30%, and 40%, respectively. By modulating enzyme/non-enzyme activity/contents including the AsA-GSH cycle, gAs contributed to the protection of the cellular redox state. Most important of all, gA applications were able to reduce Hg intake by approximately 66%. Therefore, these results showed that gAs were effective in highly inhibiting Hg uptake and could significantly increase wheat tolerance to toxicity by eliminating Hg-induced oxidative damage and inhibiting metabolic processes involved in photosynthesis. The findings obtained from the study provide a new perspective on the alleviation roles of reduced graphene oxide aerogels as an effective adsorbent for decreasing damages of mercury toxicity in wheat plants.

Phosphorus-Containing Polybenzoxazine Aerogels with Efficient Flame Retardation and Thermal Insulation

Bisphenol A type benzoxazine (Ba) monomers and 10-(2, 5-dihydroxyphenyl)-10- hydrogen-9- oxygen-10- phosphine-10- oxide (DOPO-HQ) were employed to prepare flame retardant and heat insulated polybenzoxazine (PBa) composite aerogels. The successful preparation of PBa composite aerogels was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal degradation behavior and flame-retardant properties of the pristine PBa and PBa composite aerogels were investigated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter. The initial decomposition temperature of PBa decreased slightly after incorporating DOPO-HQ, increasing the char residue amount. The incorporation of 5% DOPO-HQ into PBa led to a decrease of 33.1% at the peak of the heat-release rate and a decrease of 58.7% in the TSP. The flame-retardant mechanism of PBa composite aerogels was investigated by SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and TGA coupled with infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR). The aerogel has advantages such as a simple synthesis procedure, easy amplification, lightweight, low thermal conductivity, and good flame retardancy.

Comprehensive Enhancement in Thermomechanical Performance of Melt-Extruded PEEK Filaments by Graphene Incorporation

A simple and scalable fabrication process of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs)-reinforced polyether ether ketone (PEEK) filaments with enhanced mechanical and thermal performance was successfully demonstrated in this work. The developed PEEK-GnP nanocomposite filaments by a melt-extrusion process showed excellent improvement in storage modulus at 30 °C (61%), and significant enhancement in tensile strength (34%), Young's modulus (25%), and elongation at break (37%) when GnP content of 1.0 wt.% was used for the neat PEEK. Moreover, the GnPs addition to the PEEK enhanced the thermal stability of the polymer matrix. Improvement in mechanical and thermal properties was attributed to the improved dispersion of GnP inside PEEK, which could form a stronger/robust interface through hydrogen bonding and π-π* interactions. The obtained mechanical properties were also correlated to the mechanical reinforcement models of Guth and Halpin-Tsai. The GnP layers could form agglomerates as the GnP content increases (>1 wt.%), which would decline neat PEEK's crystallinity and serve as stress concentration sites inside the composite, leading to a deterioration of the mechanical performance. The results demonstrate that the developed PEEK-GnP nanocomposites can be used in highly demanding engineering sectors like 3D printing of aerospace and automotive parts and structural components of humanoid robots and biomedical devices.

Design of High-Performance Polybenzoxazines with Tunable Extended Networks Based on Resveratrol and Allyl Functional Benzoxazine

A novel resveratrol-based bio-benzoxazine monomer (RES-al) containing an allyl group has been synthesized using resveratrol, allylamine, and paraformaldehyde via Mannich condensation reaction, and its chemical structures have been characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and NMR techniques. The polymerization behavior of this benzoxazine resin has been investigated using in situ FT-IR and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements, and the thermal-mechanical properties of its corresponding polybenzoxazines are evaluated by DMA and TGA. We show that by controlling the curing process of the oxazine ring, the C=C bond in resveratrol, and the allyl group in RES-al, the cross-linking network of the polybenzoxazine can be manipulated, giving rise to tunable performance of thermosets. As all curable functionalities in RES-al are polymerized, the resulted polybenzoxazine exhibits a good thermal stability with a Tg temperature of 313 °C, a T_d5 value of 352 °C, and char yield of 53% at 800 °C under N₂.

Synthesis, Optical and Electrical Characterization of Amino-alcohol Based Sol-gel Hybrid Materials

This manuscript describes the synthesis and characterization of five new organic–inorganic hybrid (OIH) sol-gel materials that were obtained from a functionalized siloxane 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) by the reaction with the new Jeffamine^®, namely three different diamines, i.e., EDR-148, RFD-270, and THF-170, a secondary diamine, i.e., SD-2001, and a triamine, i.e., T-403. The OIH sol-gel materials were characterized by UV-visible absorption spectrophotometry, steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The reported OIH sol-gel materials showed that, with the exception of the samples prepared with Jeffamine^® SD-2001, the transmittance values ranged between 61% and 79%. Regarding the capacitance data, the values reported changed between 0.008 and 0.013 nF cm⁻². Due to their optical and electrical properties these new OIH materials show promising properties for applications as support films in an optical sensor area such as fiber sensor devices. Studies to assess the chemical stability of the OIH materials in contact with cement pastes after 7, 14, and 28 days were also performed. The samples prepared with THF–170 and GPTMS, when compared to the samples prepared with RFD-270 and T-403, exhibited improved behavior in the cement paste (alkaline environment), showing promising properties for application as support film in optical fiber sensors in the civil engineering field.

Two Birds with One Stone: Spontaneous Size Separation and Growth Inhibition of Femtosecond Laser-Generated Surfactant-Free Metallic Nanoparticles via ex Situ SU-8 Functionalization

Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) offers a facile technique to develop a large variety of surfactant-free nanomaterials with high purity. However, due to the difficulty in the control of the particle synthesis process, the as-prepared nanomaterials always have a broad size distribution with a large polydispersity (σ). Surfactant-free properties can also cause problems with particle growth, which further increases the difficulty in size control of the colloids. Therefore, searching for strategies to simultaneously unify the sizes of colloids and inhibit particle growth has become significantly important for LAL-synthesized nanomaterials to be extensively used for biological, catalytic, and optical applications, in which fields particle size plays an important role. In this work, we present a facile way to simultaneously realize these two goals by ex situ SU-8 photoresist functionalization. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by femtosecond laser ablation of silver in acetone at laser powers of 300 and 600 mW were used as starting materials. The synthesized Ag NPs have a broad size distribution between 1 and 200 nm with an average size of ca. 5.9 nm and σ of 127-207%. After ex situ SU-8 functionalization and 6 months storage, most particles larger than 10 nm become aggregates and precipitate, which makes the size distribution narrow with an average diameter of 4-5 nm and σ of 48-78%. The precipitation process is accompanied by the decrease in colloid mass from the initial ∼0.2 to 0.10-0.11 mg after ex situ SU-8 functionalization and 6 months colloid storage. Morphology analysis indicates that ex situ SU-8 functionalization inhibits the particle growth into polygonal nanocrystals. Radical polymerization of SU-8 on Ag NPs is considered to be the reason for both spontaneous size separation and growth inhibition phenomena. Benefiting from Ag NPs embedment and acetone dissolution, the glass-transition temperature of SU-8 photoresist increased from 314 to 331 °C according to thermogravimetric analysis. The universality of ex situ SU-8 functionalization-induced growth inhibition and size separation behaviors is further proved using the Au colloids generated by LAL in acetone. This work is expected to provide a new route for better size control of LAL-synthesized colloids via ex situ photoresist functionalization, although a half of colloidal mass is wasted due to radical polymerization-induced colloidal precipitation.

Novel cross-linked melamine based polyamine/CNT composites for lead ions removal

A novel series of polyamine/CNT composites were synthesized via a single step polycondensation reaction of melamine, paraformaldehyde, various alkyldiamines and chlorinated carbon nanotubes (CNT) at optimized reaction conditions in the presence of N, N-Dimethyl formamide as a solvent. Chlorinated carbon nanotubes synthesized by reacting acidified CNT and thionyl chloride was used. The pure polymer (MFDH) and the functionalized composites (MFDH1, MFDH2, MFDH3 and MFDH4) having 0.01, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1% weight of the starting precursors were used. The morphology, surface area, molecular structures and overall properties of the new series of polymers were characterized using Raman Spectroscopy, FT-IR, ¹³C NMR, X-ray diffraction experiments, BET and TGA. A comprehensive design was set up in order to evaluate the effects of pH, temperature, Lead ion initial concentrations and contact time on the ability of the new series of functionalized polymers for Lead (II) ion removal. Wastewater treatment revealed the high efficacy of the synthesized polyamine/CNT composite in the removal of ∼99% of Lead ions in wastewater samples.
