New Concept for the Facile Fabrication of Core-Shell CuO@CuFe2O4 Photocathodes for PEC Application

The CuO@CuFe₂O₄ core–shell structure represents a new family of photocatalysts that can be used as photoelectrodes that are able to produce hydrogen under a broad spectrum of visible light. Herein, we report a novel approach for the production of this active film by the thermal conversion of CuFe Prussian Blue Analogues. The outstanding photoelectrochemical properties of the photocathodes of CuO@CuFe₂O₄ were studied with the use of combinatory photo-electrochemical instrumental techniques which proved that the electrodes were stable over the whole water photolysis run under relatively positive potentials. Their outstanding performance was explained by the coupling of two charge transfer mechanisms occurring in core–shell architectures.

Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Properties of Ag-CuFe2O4@WO3 Magnetic Nanocomposite

This study aimed to synthesize a new magnetic photocatalytic nanosystem composed of Ag-CuFe2O4@WO3 and to investigate its photodegradation efficiency for two drug pollutants of Gemfibrozil (GEM) and Tamoxifen (TAM) under Ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. In this regard, the effect of pH, catalyst dosage, and drug concentration was thoroughly determined. The largest photodegradation level for GEM (81%) and TAM (83%) was achieved at pH 5, a photocatalyst dosage of 0.2 g/L, drug concentration of 5 mg/L, and contact time of 150 min. The drug photodegradation process followed the pseudo first-order kinetic model. In addition to the photodegradation effect, the nanocomposites were proved to be efficient in terms of antibacterial activity, proportional to the Ag doping level. The Ag-CuFe2O4@WO3 nanocomposite exhibited a stable, efficient performance without an obvious catalytic loss after five successive cycles. Taken together, the developed magnetic photocatalyst is able to simultaneously disinfect wastewater streams and to degrade pharmaceutical contaminants and thus shows a promising potential for purification of multi-contaminant water systems.

Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting with p-Type Metal Oxide Semiconductor Photocathodes

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising way to produce clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel. Solar hydrogen production by using p-type metal oxide semiconductor photocathodes has not been studied as extensively as that with n-type metal oxide semiconductor photoanodes and p-type photovoltaic-grade non-oxide semiconductor photocathodes. Copper-based oxide photocathodes show relatively good conductivity, but suffer from instability in aqueous solution under illumination, whereas iron-based metal oxide photocathodes demonstrate more stable PEC performance but have problems in charge separation and transport. Herein, an overview of recent progress in p-type metal oxide-based photocathodes for PEC water reduction is provided. Although these materials have not been fully developed to reach their potential performance, the challenges involved have been identified and strategies to overcome these limitations have been proposed. Future research in this field should address these issues and challenges in addition to the discovery of new materials.

A combustion synthesis route for magnetically separable graphene oxide–CuFe2O4–ZnO nanocomposites with enhanced solar light-mediated photocatalytic activity

Study of Copper Ferrite as a Novel Photocathode for Water Reduction: Improving Its Photoactivity by Electrochemical Pretreatment

Studies on water-splitting p-type oxide electrodes based on nontoxic earth-abundant elements are scarce. Herein, the behavior of electrodes composed of CuFe2 O4 nanoparticles 30 nm in size is presented. The as-prepared CuFe2 O4 nanoporous electrodes exhibit small anodic photocurrents in 0.1 m NaOH. However, an electrochemical pretreatment consisting in the application of sufficiently positive potentials leads to p-type behavior with a photocurrent onset as high as 1.1 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, which is among the most positive values reported for an oxide absorbing visible light (band gap of 2.1 eV). This photocurrent is partly due to H2 evolution, but there are also signs of photoreduction of the material. Although the photocurrents are modest, these results point to the possibility of using CuFe2 O4 as a photocathode material in water-splitting devices. Furthermore, the strategy employed for the enhancement in the CuFe2 O4 photoactivity could be extended to other photocathode materials.
