Production, Characterization and Application of Oxide Nanotubes on Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy as a Potential Drug Carrier

This work concerns the development of a method of functionalization of the surface of the biomedical Ti–6Al–7Nb alloy by producing oxide nanotubes (ONTs) with drug-eluting properties. Shaping of the morphology, microstructure, and thickness of the oxide layer was carried out by anodization in an aqueous solution of 1 M ethylene glycol with the addition of 0.2 M NH₄F in the voltage range 5–100 V for 15–60 min at room temperature. The characterization of the physicochemical properties of the obtained ONTs was performed using SEM, XPS, and EDAX methods. ONTs have been shown to be composed mainly of TiO₂, Al₂O₃, and Nb₂O₅. Single-walled ONTs with the largest specific surface area of 600 cm² cm⁻² can be obtained by anodization at 50 V for 60 min. The mechanism of ONT formation on the Ti–6Al–7Nb alloy was studied in detail. Gentamicin sulfate loaded into ONTs was studied using FTIR, TG, DTA, and DTG methods. Drug release kinetics was determined by UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The obtained ONTs can be proposed for use in modern implantology as carriers for drugs delivered locally in inflammatory conditions.

Mixed oxide nanotubes in nanomedicine: A dead-end or a bridge to the future?

Nanomedicine has seen a significant rise in the development of new research tools and clinically functional devices. In this regard, significant advances and new commercial applications are expected in the pharmaceutical and orthopedic industries. For advanced orthopedic implant technologies, appropriate nanoscale surface modifications are highly effective strategies and are widely studied in the literature for improving implant performance. It is well-established that implants with nanotubular surfaces show a drastic improvement in new bone creation and gene expression compared to implants without nanotopography. Nevertheless, the scientific and clinical understanding of mixed oxide nanotubes (MONs) and their potential applications, especially in biomedical applications are still in the early stages of development. This review aims to establish a credible platform for the current and future roles of MONs in nanomedicine, particularly in advanced orthopedic implants. We first introduce the concept of MONs and then discuss the preparation strategies. This is followed by a review of the recent advancement of MONs in biomedical applications, including mineralization abilities, biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, cell culture, and animal testing, as well as clinical possibilities. To conclude, we propose that the combination of nanotubular surface modification with incorporating sensor allows clinicians to precisely record patient data as a critical contributor to evidence-based medicine.

One-step electrosynthesis of visible light responsive double-walled alloy titanium dioxide nanotube arrays for use in photocatalytic degradation of dibutyl phthalate

Using Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) alloy as a substrate, double-walled alloy titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (DW-ATNTAs) with a special porous inner wall and visible light response are synthesized in situ by an improved anodization method. During the anodization, the V element in the TC4 alloy converts into V₂O₅ which dominates the visible light response of DW-ATNTAs. After 3 h of irradiation with visible light, there is a nearly 97% reduction of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) by DW-ATNTAs in which the degradation kinetic constant is 50 and 7 times higher than that of titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (TNTAs) and alloy titanium dioxide layers (A-TiO₂(plate)), respectively. The richly porous inner wall structure of DW-ATNTAs can provide sufficient vacancies for adsorption and active sites for photocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, the differences in the morphology of the inner and outer walls are attributed to the thicker carbon and fluorine-rich oxide layer (C, F-rich oxide layer) resulting from a longer time that the inner wall spends in contact with the electrolyte during the anodization process. This special porous inner wall structure was formed due to the anti-corrosion properties of the alloy caused by appropriate amounts of V and Al as well as the removal of C and F elements during the calcination process.

Characterization of electron beam deposited Nb2O5 coatings for biomedical applications

Niobium oxide coatings deposited on Ti₆Al₄V substrates by electron beam deposition and annealed in air at 600 °C and 800 °C were evaluated for their suitability towards dental, maxillofacial or orthopaedic implant applications. A detailed physico-chemical properties investigation was carried out in order to determine their elemental and phase composition, surface morphology and roughness, mechanical properties, wettability, and corrosion resistance in simulated body fluid solution (pH = 7.4) at room temperature. The biocompatibility of the bare Ti₆Al₄V substrate and coated surfaces was evaluated by testing the cellular adhesion and viability/proliferation of human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63) after 72 h of incubation. The coatings annealed at 800 °C exhibit more phase pure nanocrystalline Nb₂O₅ surfaces with enhanced wettability, reduced porosity and enhanced corrosion resistance properties making them good candidate for dental, maxillofacial or orthopaedic implant applications.

The proposed approach could be considered for the design of various nanostructured titanium implant surfaces.
