Dynamical heterogeneities and defects in two-dimensional soft colloidal crystals

Structural and dynamical equilibrium properties of hard board-like particles in parallel confinement

We performed Monte Carlo and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations to model the diffusion of monodispersed suspensions composed of impenetrable cuboidal particles, specifically hard board-like particles (HBPs), in the presence of parallel hard walls. The impact of the walls was investigated by adjusting the size of the simulation box while maintaining constant packing fractions, fixed at η = 0.150, for systems consisting of HBPs with prolate, dual-shaped, and oblate geometries. We observed that increasing the distance between the walls led to the recovery of an isotropic bulk phase, while local particle organization near the walls remained stable. Due to their shape, oblate HBPs exhibit more efficient anchoring at wall surfaces compared to prolate shapes. The formation of nematic-like particle assemblies near the walls, confirmed by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory, significantly influenced local particle dynamics. This effect was particularly pronounced to the extent that a modest portion of cuboids near the walls tended to diffuse exclusively in planes parallel to the confinement, even more efficiently than observed in the bulk regions.

A closer examination of the nature of atomic motion in the interfacial region of crystals upon approaching melting

Although crystalline materials are often conceptualized as involving a static lattice configuration of particles, it has recently become appreciated that string-like collective particle exchange motion is a ubiquitous and physically important phenomenon in both the melting and interfacial dynamics of crystals. This type of collective motion has been evidenced in melting since early simulations of hard disc melting by Alder et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 11(6), 241-243 (1963)], but a general understanding of its origin, along with its impact on melting and the dynamics of crystalline materials, has been rather slow to develop. We explore this phenomenon further by focusing on the interfacial dynamics of a model crystalline Cu material using molecular dynamics simulations where we emphasize the geometrical nature and spatial extent of the atomic trajectories over the timescale that they are caged, and we also quantify string-like collective motion on the timescale of the fast β-relaxation time, τf, i.e., "stringlets." Direct visualization of the atomic trajectories in their cages over the timescale over which the cage persists indicates that they become progressively more anisotropic upon approaching the melting temperature Tm. The stringlets, dominating the large amplitude atomic motion in the fast dynamics regime, are largely localized to the crystal interfacial region and correspond to "excess" modes in the density of states that give rise to a "boson peak." Moreover, interstitial point defects occur in direct association with the stringlets, demonstrating a link between classical defect models of melting and more recent studies of melting emphasizing the role of this kind of collective motion.

Reversible-to-irreversible transition of colloidal polycrystals under cyclic athermal quasistatic deformation

Cyclic loading on granular packings and amorphous media exhibits a transition from reversible elastic behavior to irreversible plasticity. The present study compares the irreversibility transition and microscopic details of colloidal polycrystals under oscillatory tensile-compressive and shear strain. Under both modes, the systems exhibit a reversible to irreversible transition. However, the strain amplitude at which the transition is observed is larger in the shear strain than in the tensile-compressive mode. The threshold strain amplitude is confirmed by analyzing the dynamical properties, such as mobility and atomic strain (von Mises shear strain and the volumetric strain). The structural changes are quantified using a hexatic order parameter. Under both modes of deformation, dislocations and grain boundaries in polycrystals disappear, and monocrystals are formed. We also recognize the dislocation motion through grains. The key difference is that strain accumulates diagonally in oscillatory tensile-compressive deformation, whereas in shear deformation, strain accumulation is along the x or y axis.

Structural relaxation dynamics of colloidal nanotrimers

By Molecular Dynamics simulation, we investigate the dynamics of isotropic fluids of colloidal nanotrimers whose interactions are described by varying the strength of attractive and repulsive terms of the Mie potential. To provide a consistent comparison between the systems described by different force fields, we determine the phase diagram and critical points of each system, characterize the morphology of high-density liquid phases at the same reduced temperature and density, and finally investigate their long-time relaxation dynamics. In particular, we detect an especially complex dynamics that reveals the existence of slow and fast nanotrimers and the resulting occurrence of non-Gaussianity, which develops at intermediate timescales. Deviations from Gaussianity are temporary and vanish within the timescales of the system's density fluctuations decay, when a Fickian-like diffusion regime is eventually observed.

Translation-rotation decoupling of tracers reflects medium-range crystalline order in two-dimensional colloid glasses

The dynamic heterogeneity and the translation-rotation decoupling are the dynamic signatures of glasses and supercooled liquids. Whether and how the dynamic heterogeneity would relate to the local structure of glasses has been a puzzle for decades. In this work we perform molecular dynamics simulations for tracers in both two-dimensional polydisperse colloids (2DPC) and two-dimensional binary colloids (2DBC). In 2DPC glasses, hexatic local structures develop at low enough temperatures and grow quickly along with the dynamic correlation length of the 2DPC, which is well known as the medium-range crystalline order (MRCO). In 2DBC glasses, on the other hand, any explicit local structure has not been reported to grow significantly with the dynamic correlation length at low temperatures. We introduce two different types of tracers into colloidal systems: A diamond tracer that resembles the MRCO of 2DPC glasses and a square tracer that is dissimilar to any local structure of glasses. The translation-rotation decoupling of the diamond tracer in 2DPC glasses is much more significant than that of the square tracer in the same 2DPC glasses. On the other hand, such a tracer shape-dependence of the decoupling is not observed in 2DBC glasses where the local hexatic structure does not develop significantly. We introduce a shape-dependency parameter of the decoupling and find that the shape-dependency parameter grows along with the dynamic correlation length in 2DPC glasses but not in 2DBC glasses. This illustrates that the dynamic heterogeneity and the translation-rotation decoupling of tracers could reveal the local structure that develops in glasses.

Electric-Field-Driven Assembly of Dipolar Spheres Asymmetrically Confined between Two Electrodes

Externally applied electric fields have previously been utilized to direct the assembly of colloidal particles confined at a surface into a large variety of colloidal oligomers and nonclose-packed honeycomb lattices (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 7839-7842). The colloids under such confinement and fields are observed to spontaneously organize into bilayers near the electrode. To extend and better understand how particles can come together to form quasi-two-dimensional materials, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations and complementary experiments of colloids that are strongly confined between two electrodes under an applied alternating current electric field, controlling field strength and particle area fraction. Of particular importance, we control the fraction of particles in the upper vs lower plane, which we describe as asymmetric confinement, and which effectively modulates the coordination number of particles in each plane. We model the particle-particle interactions using a Stockmayer potential to capture the dipolar interactions induced by the electric field. Phase diagrams are then delineated as a function of the control parameters, and a theoretical model is developed in which the energies of several idealized lattices are calculated and compared. We find that the resulting theoretical phase diagrams agree well with simulation. We have not only reproduced the structures observed in experiments using parameters that are close to experimental conditions but also found several previously unobserved phases in the simulations, including a network of rectangular bands, zig zags, and a sigma lattice, which we were then able to confirm in experiment. We further propose a simple way to precisely control the number ratio of particles between different planes, that is, superimposing a direct current electric field with the alternating current electric field, which can be implemented conveniently in experiments. Our work demonstrates that a diverse collection of materials can be assembled from relatively simple ingredients, which can be analyzed effectively through comparison of simulation, theory, and experiment. Our model further explains possible pathways between different phases and provides a platform for examining phases that have yet to be observed in experiments.

Defects and defect engineering in Soft Matter

Soft matter covers a wide range of materials based on linear or branched polymers, gels and rubbers, amphiphilic (macro)molecules, colloids, and self-assembled structures. These materials have applications in various industries, all highly important for our daily life, and they control all biological functions; therefore, controlling and tailoring their properties is crucial. One way to approach this target is defect engineering, which aims to control defects in the material's structure, and/or to purposely add defects into it to trigger specific functions. While this approach has been a striking success story in crystalline inorganic hard matter, both for mechanical and electronic properties, and has also been applied to organic hard materials, defect engineering is rarely used in soft matter design. In this review, we present a survey on investigations on defects and/or defect engineering in nine classes of soft matter composed of liquid crystals, colloids, linear polymers with moderate degree of branching, hyperbranched polymers and dendrimers, conjugated polymers, polymeric networks, self-assembled amphiphiles and proteins, block copolymers and supramolecular polymers. This overview proposes a promising role of this approach for tuning the properties of soft matter.

Transport dynamics of complex fluids

Thermal motion in complex fluids is a complicated stochastic process but ubiquitously exhibits initial ballistic, intermediate subdiffusive, and long-time diffusive motion, unless interrupted. Despite its relevance to numerous dynamical processes of interest in modern science, a unified, quantitative understanding of thermal motion in complex fluids remains a challenging problem. Here, we present a transport equation and its solutions, which yield a unified quantitative explanation of the mean-square displacement (MSD), the non-Gaussian parameter (NGP), and the displacement distribution of complex fluids. In our approach, the environment-coupled diffusion kernel and its time correlation function (TCF) are the essential quantities that determine transport dynamics and characterize mobility fluctuation of complex fluids; their time profiles are directly extractable from a model-free analysis of the MSD and NGP or, with greater computational expense, from the two-point and four-point velocity autocorrelation functions. We construct a general, explicit model of the diffusion kernel, comprising one unbound-mode and multiple bound-mode components, which provides an excellent approximate description of transport dynamics of various complex fluidic systems such as supercooled water, colloidal beads diffusing on lipid tubes, and dense hard disk fluid. We also introduce the concepts of intrinsic disorder and extrinsic disorder that have distinct effects on transport dynamics and different dependencies on temperature and density. This work presents an unexplored direction for quantitative understanding of transport and transport-coupled processes in complex disordered media.

Heterogeneous dynamics of unentangled chains in polymer nanocomposites

We present a systematic investigation on the effect of adding nanoparticles on the dynamics of polymer chains by using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. The dynamics is characterized by three aspects: molecular motion, relaxation at different length scales, and dynamical heterogeneity. It is found that the motion of polymer chains slows down and the deviation from Gaussian distribution becomes more pronounced with increasing nanoparticle volume fractions. For polymer nanocomposites with R ≤ R_g, the relaxation at the wave vector q = 7.0 displays multistep decay, consistent with the previous reports in strongly interacting polymer nanocomposites. Moreover, a qualitatively universal law is established that dynamic heterogeneity at whole chain's scale follows a nonmonotonic increase with increasing nanoparticle loadings, where the volume fraction of the maximum dynamic heterogeneity corresponds to the particle loading when the average distance between nanoparticles is equal to the Kuhn length of polymer chains. We show that the decoupling between whole chain's dynamics and segment dynamics is responsible for the nonmonotonic behavior of dynamic heterogeneity of whole chains.

Colloidal polycrystalline monolayers under oscillatory shear

In this paper we probe the structural response to oscillatory shear deformations of polycrystalline monolayers of soft repulsive colloids with varying area fraction over a broad range of frequencies and amplitudes. The particles are confined at a fluid interface, sheared using a magnetic microdisk, and imaged through optical microscopy. The structural and mechanical response of soft materials is highly dependent on their microstructure. If crystals are well understood and deform through the creation and mobilization of specific defects, the situation is much more complex for disordered jammed materials, where identifying structural motifs defining plastically rearranging regions remains an elusive task. Our materials fall between these two classes and allow the identification of clear pathways for structural evolution. In particular, we demonstrate that large enough strains are able to fluidize the system, identifying critical strains that fulfill a local Lindemann criterion. Conversely, smaller strains lead to localized and erratic irreversible particle rearrangements due to the motion of structural defects. In this regime, oscillatory shear promotes defect annealing and leads to the growth of large crystalline domains. Numerical simulations help identify the population of rearranging particles with those exhibiting the largest deviatoric stresses and indicate that structural evolution proceeds towards the minimization of the stress stored in the system. The particles showing high deviatoric stresses are localized around grain boundaries and defects, providing a simple criterion to spot regions likely to rearrange plastically under oscillatory shear.
