Photoinduced hole transfer in QD-phthalocyanine hybrids

Effect of heteroatom-doped carbon quantum dots on the red emission of metal-conjugated phthalocyanines through hybridization

Quantum dots (QDs) are significant fluorescent materials for energy transfer studies with phthalocyanines (Pcs) and phthalocyanine (Pc)-like biomolecules (such as chlorophylls). Carbon-based QDs, especially, have been used in numerous studies concerning energy transfer with chlorophylls, but the numbers of studies concerning energy transfer between phthalocyanines and carbon-based QDs are limited. In this study, peripherally, hydroxythioethyl terminal group substituted metal-free phthalocyanine (H₂ Pc) and zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) were noncovalently (electrostatic and/or π-π interaction) attached to carbon QDs containing boron and nitrogen to form QD-Pc nanoconjugates. The QD-Pc conjugates were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy). The absorption and fluorescence properties of QD-Pc structures in solution were studied. It was found that the quantum yields of the QDs slightly decreased from 30% to 25% upon doping the QDs with heteroatoms B and N. Förster resonance energy transfer efficiency was calculated as 33% for BCN-QD/ZnPc. For the other conjugates, almost no energy transfer from QDs to Pc cores was observed. It was shown that the energy transfer between QDs to Pc cores was completely different from the energy transfer between QDs and photosynthetic pigments, and therefore we concluded that heteroatom doping in the QD structure and the existence of zinc metal in the phthalocyanine structure is obligatory for an efficient energy transfer.

Hybrid Complexes of Photosensitizers with Luminescent Nanoparticles: Design of the Structure

Increasing the efficiency of the photodynamic action of the dyes used in photodynamic therapy is crucial in the field of modern biomedicine. There are two main approaches used to increase the efficiency of photosensitizers. The first one is targeted delivery to the object of photodynamic action, while the second one is increasing the absorption capacity of the molecule. Both approaches can be implemented by producing dye-nanoparticle conjugates. In this review, we focus on the features of the latter approach, when nanoparticles act as a light-harvesting agent and nonradiatively transfer the electronic excitation energy to a photosensitizer molecule. We will consider the hybrid photosensitizer-quantum dot complexes with energy transfer occurring according to the inductive-resonance mechanism as an example. The principle consisting in optimizing the design of hybrid complexes is proposed after an analysis of the published data; the parameters affecting the efficiency of energy transfer and the generation of reactive oxygen species in such systems are described.

Photoinduced holes transfer based visual determination of dopamine in human serum

A simple unexplored strategy was followed to construct ratiometric fluorescence-based sensing system for the detection of dopamine (DA) in human serum. Ratiometric fluorescence system was constructed through bonding energy transfer (TBET) by conjugating carboxyl functionalized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and amine-capped Carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The photophysical properties of sensing system were characterized by standard methods. Photoluminescence (PL) of sensing system under excitonic wavelength (350 nm) depends on dual emission at 440 and 595 nm that corresponds to CQDs and CdTe QDs respectively. The developed sensing system was utilized for visual determination of DA, an unquenched blue fluorescence of CQDs in ratiometric system reveals the visual color differentiation for DA binding with CdTe QDs among the possible interferences (Alanine, Glycine, Glucose, Sucrose, Urea and Ascorbic acid). The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) was calculated as 8.1 and 27.2 nm respectively by using regression analysis. Photoinduced holes transfer (PHT) might have attributed the possible sensing mechanism for DA that quench the photoluminescence sequentially to enhance the sensing performance of QDs. The matrix interferences and reliability of the developed sensing platform were evaluated by testing DA spiked human serum and the sensing response was found to be field deployable.

Photoinduced Energy Transfer in ZnCdSeS Quantum Dot-Phthalocyanines Hybrids

In this article, interaction between ZnCdSeS quantum dot (QD) and phthalocyanines with variable linker has been reported. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic investigation reveals that only photoinduced energy transfer occurs from QD to phthalocyanines. To evaluate quantitatively the energy transfer, the Poisson statistics of QD-dye complex formation was used in the analysis of steady-state and time-resolved emission quenching, which allows to estimate the energy transfer rate constant for an ideal one-to-one complex. The measured rate constants are compared to the rates evaluated based on the classic Förster theory, which shows roughly 1 nm discrepancy in the energy transfer distance estimation, or one order in magnitude discrepancy in the transfer rate constants.

Effects of orientation at the phthalocyanine–CdSe interface on the electron transfer characteristics

A theoretical study of a phthalocyanine molecule anchored on CdSe quantum dots demonstrated strong orientational effects and the important role of a linker in the photoinduced charge transfer between the components.
