Emerging Trends of Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling in Froth Flotation: A Review

Froth flotation is the most versatile process in mineral beneficiation, extensively used to concentrate a wide range of minerals. This process comprises mixtures of more or less liberated minerals, water, air, and various chemical reagents, involving a series of intermingled multiphase physical and chemical phenomena in the aqueous environment. Today's main challenge facing the froth flotation process is to gain atomic-level insights into the properties of its inherent phenomena governing the process performance. While it is often challenging to determine these phenomena via trial-and-error experimentations, molecular modeling approaches not only elicit a deeper understanding of froth flotation but can also assist experimental studies in saving time and budget. Thanks to the rapid development of computer science and advances in high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures, theoretical/computational chemistry has now matured enough to successfully and gainfully apply to tackle the challenges of complex systems. In mineral processing, however, advanced applications of computational chemistry are increasingly gaining ground and demonstrating merit in addressing these challenges. Accordingly, this contribution aims to encourage mineral scientists, especially those interested in rational reagent design, to become familiarized with the necessary concepts of molecular modeling and to apply similar strategies when studying and tailoring properties at the molecular level. This review also strives to deliver the state-of-the-art integration and application of molecular modeling in froth flotation studies to assist either active researchers in this field to disclose new directions for future research or newcomers to the field to initiate innovative works.

Iron nitride nanoparticles for rapid dechlorination of mixed chlorinated ethene contamination

Sulfidation and, more recently, nitriding have been recognized as promising modifications to enhance the selectivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles for trichloroethene (TCE). Herein, we investigated the performance of iron nitride (Fe_xN) nanoparticles in the removal of a broader range of chlorinated ethenes (CEs), including tetrachloroethene (PCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE), and their mixture with TCE, and compared it to the performance of sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) prepared from the same precursor nZVI. Two distinct types of iron nitride (Fe_xN) nanoparticles, containing γ'-Fe₄N and ε-Fe_2-3N phases, exhibited substantially higher PCE and cis-DCE dechlorination rates compared to S-nZVI. A similar effect was observed with a CE mixture, which was completely dechlorinated by both types of Fe_xN nanoparticles within 10 days, whereas S-nZVI was able to remove only about half of the amount, most of which being TCE. Density functional theory calculations further revealed that the cleavage of the first C-Cl bond was the rate-limiting step for all CEs dechlorinated on the γ'-Fe₄N(001) surface, with the reaction barriers of PCE and cis-DCE being 29.9, and 40.8 kJ mol^-1, respectively. Fe_xN nanoparticles proved to be highly effective in the remediation of PCE, cis-DCE, and mixed CE contamination.

Theoretical assessments on the interaction between amino acids and the g-Mg3N2 monolayer: dispersion corrected DFT and DFT-MD simulations

The interaction of a few amino acids (AAs) with the graphene-like magnesium nitride (g-Mg₃N₂) monolayer has been investigated with density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The Mg site was found to cause significant attraction with the polar active sites of AAs. Such AAs, are capable of producing electrostatics bonding with -48.012 (kcal mol^-1) of interaction energy for tyrosine. The good consistency of the DFT interaction energy with the second-order Møller-Plesset method was found. Furthermore, the DFT-MD simulation of the tyrosine/g-Mg₃N₂ system demonstrated that this host-guest system is stable at ambient conditions. The electronic structures and quantum molecular descriptors were calculated, and the results revealed that the g-Mg₃N₂ monolayer is sensitive to the interaction with AAs. Our first-principles outcomes suggest comprehensive visions into the functionalization of g-Mg₃N₂, and anticipate its applicability as an unprecedented nanovector for AAs. In addition, g-Mg₃N₂ nanosheets can be utilized as biosensors for biomolecules detection. These are very hopeful for promising biological and pharmaceutical applications of g-Mg₃N₂.

Exploring the Evolution Mechanism of Sulfur Vacancies by Investigating the Role of Vacancy Defects in the Interaction between H2S and the FeS(001) Surface

Vacancy defects are inherent point defects in materials. In this study, we investigate the role of Fe vacancy (V_Fe) and S vacancy (V_S) in the interaction (adsorption, dissociation, and diffusion) between H₂S and the FeS(001) surface using the dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D2) method. V_Fe promotes the dissociation of H₂S but slightly hinders the dissociation of HS. Compared with the perfect surface (2.08 and 1.15 eV), the dissociation energy barrier of H₂S is reduced to 1.56 eV, and HS is increased to 1.25 eV. Meanwhile, S vacancy (V_S) significantly facilitates the adsorption and dissociation of H₂S, which not only reduces the dissociation energy barriers of H₂S and HS to 0.07 and 0.11 eV, respectively, but also changes the dissociation process of H₂S from an endothermic process to a spontaneous exothermic one. Furthermore, V_Fe can promote the hydrogen (H) diffusion process from the surface into the matrix and reduce the energy barrier of the rate-limiting step from 1.12 to 0.26 eV. But it is very hard for H atoms gathered around V_S to diffuse into the matrix, especially the energy barrier of the rate-limiting step increases to 1.89 eV. Finally, we propose that V_S on the FeS(001) surface is intensely difficult to form and exist in the actual environment through the calculation results.

Changes in CO2 Adsorption Affinity Related to Ni Doping in FeS Surfaces: A DFT-D3 Study

Metal sulphides constitute cheap, naturally abundant, and environmentally friendly materials for energy storage applications and chemistry. In particular, iron (II) monosulphide (FeS, mackinawite) is a material of relevance in theories of the origin of life and for heterogenous catalytic applications in the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) towards small organic molecules. In natural mackinawite, Fe is often substituted by other metals, however, little is known about how such substitutions alter the chemical activity of the material. Herein, the effect of Ni doping on the structural, electronic, and catalytic properties of FeS surfaces is explored via dispersion-corrected density functional theory simulations. Substitutional Ni dopants, introduced on the Fe site, are readily incorporated into the pristine matrix of FeS, in good agreement with experimental measurements. The CO2 molecule was found to undergo deactivation and partial desorption from the doped surfaces, mainly at the Ni site when compared to undoped FeS surfaces. This behaviour is attributed to the energetically lowered d-band centre position of the doped surface, as a consequence of the increased number of paired electrons originating from the Ni dopant. The reaction and activation energies of CO2 dissociation atop the doped surfaces were found to be increased when compared to pristine surfaces, thus helping to further elucidate the role Ni could have played in the reactivity of FeS. It is expected that Ni doping in other Fe-sulphides may have a similar effect, limiting the catalytic activity of these phases when this dopant is present at their surfaces.

Activating the FeS (001) Surface for CO2 Adsorption and Reduction through the Formation of Sulfur Vacancies: A DFT-D3 Study

As a promising material for heterogeneous catalytic applications, layered iron (II) monosulfide (FeS) contains active edges and an inert basal (001) plane. Activating the basal (001) plane could improve the catalytic performance of the FeS material towards CO2 activation and reduction reactions. Herein, we report dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D3) calculations of the adsorption of CO2 and the elementary steps involved in its reduction through the reverse water-gas shift reaction on a defective FeS (001) surface containing sulfur vacancies. The exposed Fe sites resulting from the creation of sulfur vacancies are shown to act as highly active sites for CO2 activation and reduction. Based on the calculated adsorption energies, we show that the CO2 molecules will outcompete H2O and H2 molecules for the exposed active Fe sites if all three molecules are present on or near the surface. The CO2 molecule is found to weakly physisorb (−0.20 eV) compared to the sulfur-deficient (001) surface where it adsorbs much strongly, releasing adsorption energy of −1.78 and −1.83 eV at the defective FeS (001) surface containing a single and double sulfur vacancy, respectively. The CO2 molecule gained significant charge from the interacting surface Fe ions at the defective surface upon adsorption, which resulted in activation of the C–O bonds confirmed via vibrational frequency analyses. The reaction and activation energy barriers of the elementary steps involved in the CO2 hydrogenation reactions to form CO and H2O species are also unraveled.

Electronic Structure and Surface Properties of Copper Thiocyanate: A Promising Hole Transport Material for Organic Photovoltaic Cells

Considering the significance of hexagonal copper thiocyanate (β-CuSCN) in several optoelectronic technologies and applications, it is essential to investigate its electronic structure and surface properties. Herein, we have employed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to characterise the band structure, density of states, and the energy-dependent X-ray photoelectron (XPS) valence band spectra at variable excitation energies of β-CuSCN. The surface properties in the absence and presence of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a solvent additive for improving perovskite solar cells' power conversion efficiency, have also been systematically characterised. β-CuSCN is shown to be an indirect band gap material (Eg = 3.68 eV) with the valence band edge demonstrated to change from being dominated by Cu-3d at soft X-ray ionisation photon energies to Cu-3p at hard X-ray ionisation photon energies. The adsorption energy of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the (100) and (110) β-CuSCN surfaces is calculated at -1.12 and -0.91 eV, respectively. The presence of DMSO on the surface is shown to have a stabilisation effect, lowering the surface energy and tuning the work function of the β-CuSCN surfaces, which is desirable for organic solar cells to achieve high power conversion efficiencies.

Solvent Effects on Catechol Crystal Habits and Aspect Ratios: A Combination of Experiments and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

This work could help to better understand the solvent effects on crystal habits and aspect ratio changes at the molecular level, which provide some guidance for solvent selection in industrial crystallization processes. With the catechol crystal habits acquired using both experimental and simulation methods in isopropanol, methyl acetate and ethyl acetate, solvent effects on crystal morphology were explored based on the modified attachment energy model. Firstly, morphologically dominant crystal faces were obtained with the predicted crystal habit in vacuum. Then, modified attachment energies were calculated by the molecular dynamics simulation to modify the crystal shapes in a real solvent environment, and the simulation results were in agreement with the experimental ones. Meanwhile, the surface properties such as roughness and the diffusion coefficient were introduced to analyze the solvent adsorption behaviors and the radial distribution function curves were generated to distinguish diverse types of interactions like hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. Results show that the catechol crystal habits were affected by the combination of the attachment energy, surface structures and molecular interaction types. Moreover, the changing aspect ratios of catechol crystals are closely related to the existence of hydrogen bonds which contribute to growth inhibition on specific faces.

First-Principles Insights into the Interface Chemistry between 4-Aminothiophenol and Zinc Phosphide (Zn3P2) Nanoparticles

Accurate prediction of the structures, stabilities, and electronic structures of hybrid inorganic/organic systems is an essential prerequisite for tuning their electronic properties and functions. Herein, the interface chemistry between the 4-aminothiophenol (4ATP) molecule and the (001), (101), and (110) surfaces of zinc phosphide (Zn₃P₂) has been investigated by means of first-principles density functional theory calculation with a correction for van der Waals interactions. In particular, the atomic-level insights into the fundamental aspects of the 4ATP adsorption, including the lowest-energy adsorption configurations, binding energetics, structural parameters, and electronic properties are presented and discussed. The 4ATP molecule is demonstrated to bind most strongly onto the least stable Zn₃P₂(001) surface (E _ads = -1.91 eV) and least strongly onto the most stable Zn₃P₂(101) surface (E _ads = -1.21 eV). Partial density of states analysis shows that the adsorption of 4ATP on the Zn₃P₂ surfaces is characterized by strong hybridization between the molecule's sulfur and nitrogen p-orbitals and the d-orbitals of the interacting surface Zn ions, which gave rise to electron density accumulation around the centers of the newly formed Zn-S and Zn-N chemical bonds. The thermodynamic crystal morphology of the nonfunctionalized and 4ATP-functionalized Zn₃P₂ nanoparticles was obtained using Wulff construction based on the calculated surface energies. The stronger binding of the 4ATP molecule onto the less stable (001) and (110) surfaces in preference to the most stable (101) facet resulted in the modulation of the Zn₃P₂ nanocrystal shape, with the reactive (001) and (110) surfaces becoming more pronounced in the equilibrium morphology.

The origin of heredity in protocells

Here we develop a computational model that examines one of the first major biological innovations-the origin of heredity in simple protocells. The model assumes that the earliest protocells were autotrophic, producing organic matter from CO₂ and H₂ Carbon fixation was facilitated by geologically sustained proton gradients across fatty acid membranes, via iron-sulfur nanocrystals lodged within the membranes. Thermodynamic models suggest that organics formed this way should include amino acids and fatty acids. We assume that fatty acids partition to the membrane. Some hydrophobic amino acids chelate FeS nanocrystals, producing three positive feedbacks: (i) an increase in catalytic surface area; (ii) partitioning of FeS nanocrystals to the membrane; and (iii) a proton-motive active site for carbon fixing that mimics the enzyme Ech. These positive feedbacks enable the fastest-growing protocells to dominate the early ecosystem through a simple form of heredity. We propose that as new organics are produced inside the protocells, the localized high-energy environment is more likely to form ribonucleotides, linking RNA replication to its ability to drive protocell growth from the beginning. Our novel conceptualization sets out conditions under which protocell heredity and competition could arise, and points to where crucial experimental work is required.This article is part of the themed issue 'Process and pattern in innovations from cells to societies'.

Adsorption and Desulfurization Mechanism of Thiophene on Layered FeS(001), (011), and (111) Surfaces: A Dispersion-Corrected Density Functional Theory Study

Layered transition-metal chalcogenides have emerged as a fascinating new class of materials for catalysis. Here, we present periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the adsorption of thiophene and the direct desulfurization reaction pathways on the (001), (011), and (111) surfaces of layered FeS. The fundamental aspects of the thiophene adsorption, including the initial adsorption geometries, adsorption energies, structural parameters, and electronic properties, are presented. From the calculated adsorption energies, we show that the flat adsorption geometries, wherein the thiophene molecule forms multiple π-bonds with the FeS surfaces, are energetically more favorable than the upright adsorption geometries, with the strength of adsorption decreasing in the order FeS(111) > FeS(011) > FeS(001). The adsorption of the thiophene onto the reactive (011) and (111) surfaces is shown to be characterized by charge transfer from the interacting Fe d-band to the π-system of the thiophene molecule, which causes changes of the intramolecular structure including loss of aromaticity and elongation of the C-S bonds. The thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the elementary steps involved in the direct desulfurization of thiophene on the reactive FeS surfaces is also presented. Direct desulfurization of thiophene occurs preferentially on the (111) surface, as reflected by the overall exothermic reaction energy calculated for the process (ER = -0.15 eV), with an activation energy of 1.58 eV.

A DFT study of the adsorption of short peptides on Mg and Mg-based alloy surfaces

Adsorption of short peptides, including three dipeptides: Arg–Gly, Gly–Asp, Arg–Asp, and one tripeptide RGD, on the surfaces of Mg and Mg alloys (Mg–Zn, Mg–Y, and Mg–Nd), was studied using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), considering van der Waals (vdW) correction.

Iron catalysis at the origin of life

Iron-sulphur proteins are ancient and drive fundamental processes in cells, notably electron transfer and CO₂ fixation. Iron-sulphur minerals with equivalent structures could have played a key role in the origin of life. However, the 'iron-sulphur world' hypothesis has had a mixed reception, with questions raised especially about the feasibility of a pyrites-pulled reverse Krebs cycle. Phylogenetics suggests that the earliest cells drove carbon and energy metabolism via the acetyl CoA pathway, which is also replete in Fe(Ni)S proteins. Deep differences between bacteria and archaea in this pathway obscure the ancestral state. These differences make sense if early cells depended on natural proton gradients in alkaline hydrothermal vents. If so, the acetyl CoA pathway diverged with the origins of active ion pumping, and ancestral CO₂ fixation might have been equivalent to methanogens, which depend on a membrane-bound NiFe hydrogenase, energy converting hydrogenase. This uses the proton-motive force to reduce ferredoxin, thence CO₂ . The mechanism suggests that pH could modulate reduction potential at the active site of the enzyme, facilitating the difficult reduction of CO₂ by H₂ . This mechanism could be generalised under abiotic conditions so that steep pH differences across semi-conducting Fe(Ni)S barriers drives not just the first steps of CO₂ fixation to C1 and C2 organics such as CO, CH₃ SH and CH₃ COSH, but a series of similar carbonylation and hydrogenation reactions to form longer chain carboxylic acids such as pyruvate, oxaloacetate and α-ketoglutarate, as in the incomplete reverse Krebs cycle found in methanogens. We suggest that the closure of a complete reverse Krebs cycle, by regenerating acetyl CoA directly, displaced the acetyl CoA pathway from many modern groups. A later reliance on acetyl CoA and ATP eliminated the need for the proton-motive force to drive most steps of the reverse Krebs cycle. © 2017 IUBMB Life, 69(6):373-381, 2017.

Structures and Properties of As(OH)3 Adsorption Complexes on Hydrated Mackinawite (FeS) Surfaces: A DFT-D2 Study

Reactive mineral-water interfaces exert control on the bioavailability of contaminant arsenic species in natural aqueous systems. However, the ability to accurately predict As surface complexation is limited by the lack of molecular-level understanding of As-water-mineral interactions. In the present study, we report the structures and properties of the adsorption complexes of arsenous acid (As(OH)3) on hydrated mackinawite (FeS) surfaces, obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The fundamental aspects of the adsorption, including the registries of the adsorption complexes, adsorption energies, and structural parameters are presented. The FeS surfaces are shown to be stabilized by hydration, as is perhaps to be expected because the adsorbed water molecules stabilize the low-coordinated surface atoms. As(OH)3 adsorbs weakly at the water-FeS(001) interface through a network of hydrogen-bonded interactions with water molecules on the surface, with the lowest-energy structure calculated to be an As-up outer-sphere complex. Compared to the water-FeS(001) interface, stronger adsorption was calculated for As(OH)3 on the water-FeS(011) and water-FeS(111) interfaces, characterized by strong hybridization between the S-p and O-p states of As(OH)3 and the surface Fe-d states. The As(OH)3 molecule displayed a variety of chemisorption geometries on the water-FeS(011) and water-FeS(111) interfaces, where the most stable configuration at the water-FeS(011) interface is a bidentate Fe-AsO-Fe complex, but on the water-FeS(111) interface, a monodentate Fe-O-Fe complex was found. Detailed information regarding the adsorption mechanisms has been obtained via projected density of states (PDOS) and electron density difference iso-surface analyses and vibrational frequency assignments of the adsorbed As(OH)3 molecule.

Mass transfer of growth units towards the interface promotes crystal growth, and the driving force essentially depends on anisotropic chemical bonding architectures.

A DFT+U investigation of hydrogen adsorption on the LaFeO3(010) surface

Lanthanum ferrite (LaFeO₃) is a technologically important electrode material for nickel–metal hydride batteries, energy storage and catalysis. In the present study, we have employed spin-polarized density functional theory calculations, with the Hubbard U correction (DFT+U), to unravel the adsorption mechanism of H₂ on the LaFeO₃(010) surface.
