Abstract
Although it has been established that covalent functionalization of the U-O bonds in the uranyl dication (UO22+) generally requires use of strong reductants and electrophiles, little work has examined how interactions between the individual reaction components could affect final outcomes in solution. Here, the patterns of such reactivity have been studied in a UO22+-containing model system supported by a workhorse pentadentate ligand, 2,2'-[(methylimino)bis(2,1-ethanediylnitrilomethylidyne)]bis-phenol. Oxo activation and functionalization have been tested with (i) electrochemical and chemical reduction, and (ii) coordinating and noncoordinating solvents. In acetonitrile, uranyl reduction was achieved cleanly, but treatment of the reduced species with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) resulted in a mixture of products arising from direct electron transfer to BCF. In dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), electrochemical reduction of uranyl was achieved cleanly, but clean chemical reactivity was inaccessible. Despite these challenges, one trinuclear and oxo-deficient uranium-containing product was crystallized from CH2Cl2 solution and characterized; thus, desirable electrophilic reactivity can proceed to some degree in CH2Cl2 with BCF. Computational studies were used to investigate the properties of the trinuclear uranium product and the changes that could be inducible by further reduction. Taken together, the reactivity patterns identified here could inform design of improved systems for actinyl oxo functionalization.

Abstract
The +5 state is an unusual oxidation state of uranium due to its instability in the aqueous phase. As a result, gaining information about its aqueous speciation is extremely difficult. The present work is an attempt in that direction and it provides insight into the existence of a new pentavalent species in the presence of hetero-bifunctional phosphonocarboxylate (PC) chelators, other than the carbonate ion, in the aqueous medium. The aqueous chemistry of pentavalent uranium species with three environmentally relevant PCs was probed using electrochemical and DFT methods to understand the redox energy and kinetics of conversion of the U(VI)/U(V) couple, stability, structure, stoichiometry, binding modes, etc. Interestingly, pentavalent uranium complexes with PCs are quite persistent over a wide range of pH starting from acidic to alkaline conditions. The PC chelators block the cation-cation interaction (CCI) of U(V) through strong hetero-bidentate chelation and intermolecular hydrogen bonding (IMHB) interactions which stabilize the pentavalent metal ion against disproportionation. For uranyl species in the presence of PCs, acting as chelators, CV plots were obtained at varying pH values from 2 to 8. The obtained results indicate an irreversible single redox peak involving U(VI) to U(V) conversion and association of a coupled chemical reaction with the electron transfer step. ESI-MS studies were performed to understand the speciation effect on the U(VI)/U(V) redox couple with varying pH. Speciation modelling of U(V) with the PC ligands was carried out, which indicated that the U(V) is redox stable in nearly 47% of the pH region in the presence of the PCs as compared to the carboxylate-based chelators. The free energy and reduction potential of the U(V) complexes and the reduction free energy and disproportionation free energy for the U(VI)/U(V) couple were determined by DFT computations in the presence of the PCs. In situ spectroelectrochemical spectra were recorded to provide evidence for the existence of U(V) species with PCs in the aqueous medium and to acquire its absorption spectra. The present study is highly significant for understanding the coordination chemistry of pentavalent uranium species, accurate modelling of uranium, and isolation of U(V).

Abstract
We detail the relative role of ancillary ligand electron-donating ability in comparison to the locus of oxidation (either metal or ligand) on the electrophilic reactivity of a series of oxidized Mn salen nitride complexes. The electron-donating ability of the ancillary salen ligand was tuned via the para-phenolate substituent (R = CF3, H, tBu, OiPr, NMe2, NEt2) in order to have minimal effect on the geometry at the metal center. Through a suite of experimental (electrochemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory) techniques, we have demonstrated that metal-based oxidation to [MnVI(SalR)N]+ occurs for R = CF3, H, tBu, OiPr, while ligand radical formation to [MnV(SalR)N]+˙ occurs with the more electron-donating substituents R = NMe2, NEt2. We next investigated the reactivity of the electrophilic nitride with triarylphosphines to form a MnIV phosphoraneiminato adduct and determined that the rate of reaction decreases as the electron-donating ability of the salen para-phenolate substituent is increased. Using a Hammett plot, we find a break in the Hammett relation between R = OiPr and R = NMe2, without a change in mechanism, consistent with the locus of oxidation exhibiting a dominant effect on nitride reactivity, and not the overall donating ability of the ancillary salen ligand. This work differentiates between the subtle and interconnected effects of ancillary ligand electron-donating ability, and locus of oxidation, on electrophilic nitride reactivity.

Abstract
Synthesis of a series of hydrocarbon-soluble triarylamines bearing F, CF3, and Br substituents showing quasi-reversible redox events in the 0.59-1.32 V range is reported. Chemical oxidation of the amines was carried out with 0.5PhI(OAc)2/Me3SiX/Na[RCB11Cl11] (X = Cl or OTf, R = H or Me), and a few aminium salts were isolated as pure solids.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and electrochemical investigation of the NiII and CuII complexes of a novel Sal ligand bearing two ferrocene moieties attached at its diimine linker, M(Sal)Fc. The electronic spectra of M(Sal)Fc are near identical to its phenyl-substituted counterpart, M(Sal)Ph, indicating the ferrocene moieties exist in the secondary coordination sphere of M(Sal)Fc. The cyclic voltammograms of M(Sal)Fc exhibit an additional two-electron wave in comparison to M(Sal)Ph, which is assigned to the sequential oxidation of the two ferrocene moieties. The chemical oxidation of M(Sal)Fc, monitored by low temperature UV-vis spectroscopy, supports the formation of a mixed valent FeIIFeIII species followed by a bis(ferrocenium) species upon sequential addition of one and two equivalents of chemical oxidant. The addition of a third equivalent of oxidant to Ni(Sal)Fc yielded intense near-IR transitions that are indicative of the formation of a fully delocalized Sal-ligand radical (Sal˙), while the same addition to Cu(Sal)Fc yielded a species that is currently under further spectroscopic investigation. These results suggest the oxidation of the ferrocene moieties of M(Sal)Fc does not affect the electronic structure of the M(Sal) core, and these are thus in the secondary coordination sphere of the overall complex.

Abstract
The uranyl complex UVIO2Cl(LMes) of the redox-active, acyclic dipyrrin-diimine anion LMes- [HLMes = 1,9-di-tert-butyl-imine-5-(mesityl)dipyrrin] is reported, and its redox property is explored and compared with that of the previously reported UVIO2Cl(LF) [HLF = 1,9-di-tert-butyl-imine-5-(pentafluorophenyl)dipyrrin] to understand the influence of the meso substituent. Cyclic voltammetry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and density functional theory studies show that the alteration from an electron-withdrawing meso substituent to an electron-donating meso substituent on the dipyrrin ligand significantly modifies the stability of the products formed after reduction. For UVIO2Cl(LMes), the formation of a diamond-shaped, oxo-bridged uranyl(V) dimer, [UVO2(LMes)]2 is seen, whereas in contrast, for UVIO2Cl(LF), only ligand reduction occurs. Computational modeling of these reactions shows that while ligand reduction followed by chloride dissociation occurs in both cases, ligand-to-metal electron transfer is favorable for UVIO2Cl(LMes) only, which subsequently facilitates uranyl(V) dimerization.

Abstract
Oxidation of a series of CrV nitride salen complexes (CrVNSalR) with different para-phenolate substituents (R = CF3, tBu, NMe2) was investigated to determine how the locus of oxidation (either metal or ligand) dictates reactivity at the nitride. Para-phenolate substituents were chosen to provide maximum variation in the electron-donating ability of the tetradentate ligand at a site remote from the metal coordination sphere. We show that one-electron oxidation affords CrVI nitrides ([CrVINSalR]+; R = CF3, tBu) and a localized CrV nitride phenoxyl radical for the more electron-donating NMe2 substituent ([CrVNSalNMe2]•+). The facile nitride homocoupling observed for the MnVI analogues was significantly attenuated for the CrVI complexes due to a smaller increase in nitride character in the M≡N π* orbitals for Cr relative to Mn. Upon oxidation, both the calculated nitride natural population analysis (NPA) charge and energy of molecular orbitals associated with the {Cr≡N} unit change to a lesser extent for the CrV ligand radical derivative ([CrVNSalNMe2]•+) in comparison to the CrVI derivatives ([CrVINSalR]+; R = CF3, tBu). As a result, [CrVNSalNMe2]•+ reacts with B(C6F5)3, thus exhibiting similar nucleophilic reactivity to the neutral CrV nitride derivatives. In contrast, the CrVI derivatives ([CrVINSalR]+; R = CF3, tBu) act as electrophiles, displaying facile reactivity with PPh3 and no reaction with B(C6F5)3. Thus, while oxidation to the ligand radical does not change the reactivity profile, metal-based oxidation to CrVI results in umpolung, a switch from nucleophilic to electrophilic reactivity at the terminal nitride.

The
uranyl complexes UO2(OAc)(L) and UO2Cl(L) of the redox-active, acyclic diamido–dipyrrin
anion L– are reported
and their redox properties explored. Because of the inert nature of
the complexes toward hydrolysis and oxidation, synthesis of both the
ligands and complexes was conducted under ambient conditions. Voltammetric,
electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and density functional
theory studies show that one-electron chemical reduction by the reagent
CoCp2 leads to the formation of a dipyrrin radical for
both complexes [Cp2Co][UO2(OAc)(L•)] and [Cp2Co][UO2Cl(L•)]. Air-stable
uranyl complexes of diamido−dipyrrin ligands
undergo one-electron reduction to form highly air-sensitive ligand
radical complexes instead of uranyl(V) complexes seen for diimine
analogues.

Abstract
The ligand electronics of salen manganese nitride complexes directly influence the locus of oxidation and, thus, the reactivity of the resulting oxidized species. This work investigates the influence of tert-butoxy, isopropoxy, and methoxy substituents on the electronics of salen manganese nitride species and includes the first documentation of the para Hammett value for the tert-butoxy substituent (σpara = -0.13 ± 0.03). Each alkoxy-substituted complex undergoes metal-based oxidation to form manganese(VI), and the kinetics of bimolecular homocoupling to form N2 were assessed by cyclic voltammetry. Bis-oxidation of the manganese complexes was investigated at low temperature using cyclic voltammery and UV-vis-near-IR spectroscopy, and in combination with theoretical calculations, plausible electronic structures of the dications are provided.

Abstract
Search for new U(VI) sequestering macrocyclic ligands is an important area of research due to manifold applications. Besides hard- or soft-donor-based ligands, mixed-donor ligands are also gaining popularity in achieving optimized performances. However, how the combination of hard-soft-donor centers alters the bonding interactions with U(VI) is still not well-understood. Moreover, a consensus is yet to be reached on the nature and role of underlying covalent interactions in mixed N,O-donor ligands. In this work, using the relativistic density functional theory (DFT), we attempted to address these intriguing issues by investigating the subtle change in bonding characteristics of the uranyl ion upon binding with an expanded porphyrin, viz. sapphyrin, with subsequent O substitutions at the cavity. The results obtained from a range of modern analysis tools suggest that in the O-substituted sapphyrin variants, UO22+ prefers to bind with N over O, and an increase in the number of O-donor sites at the cavity prompts UO22+ to have a better interaction with the rest of the N-donor-centers. Although O donors are involved in more numbers of mixed molecular orbitals, the variation in the amplitude of overlap and the better σ-donation ability favor N to have stronger bonding interactions with uranyl. Molecular orbital (MO) and density of states (DOS) analyses show favorable participation of U(d), and the involvement of U(f) orbitals in bonding is of a low extent but non-negligible. Although electrostatic interaction dominates at U-O/N bonds in the equatorial plane, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules descriptors, MO analysis, and overlap-integral calculations confirm the presence of underlying near-degeneracy-driven covalent interactions.

Abstract
Uranyl(VI) complexes with pentadentate N3O2-donating Schiff base ligands having various substituents at the ortho (R1) and/or para (R2) positions on phenolate moieties, R1,R2-Mesaldien2-, were synthesized and thoroughly characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Molecular structures of UO2(R1,R2-Mesaldien) are more or less affected by the electron-donating or -withdrawing nature of the substituents. The redox behavior of all UO2(R1,R2-Mesaldien) complexes was investigated to understand how substituents introduced onto the ligand affect the redox behavior of these uranyl(VI) complexes. As a result, the redox potentials of UO2(R1,R2-Mesaldien) in dimethyl sulfoxide increased from -1.590 to -1.213 V with an increase in the electron-withdrawing nature of the substituents at the R1 and R2 positions. The spectroelectrochemical measurements and theoretical calculation [density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations] revealed that the center U6+ of each UO2(R1,R2-Mesaldien) complex undergoes one-electron reduction to afford the corresponding uranyl(V) complex, [UO2(R1,R2-Mesaldien)]-, regardless of the difference in the substituents. Consequently, the redox active center of uranyl(VI) complexes seems not to be governed by the redox potentials but to be determined by whether the LUMO is centered on a U 5f orbital or on one π* orbital of a surrounding ligand.

C-term magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy is a powerful method for probing d-d and f-f transitions in paramagnetic metal complexes. However, this technique remains underdeveloped both experimentally and theoretically for studies of U(v) complexes of Oh symmetry, which have been of longstanding interest for probing electronic structure, bonding, and covalency in 5f systems. In this study, C-term NIR MCD of the Laporte forbidden f-f transitions of [UCl6]- and [UF6]- are reported, demonstrating the significant fine structure resolution possible with this technique including for the low energy Γ7 → Γ8 transitions in [UF6]-. The experimental NIR MCD studies were further extended to [U(OC6F5)6]-, [U(CH2SiMe3)6]-, and [U(NC(tBu)(Ph))6]- to evaluate the effects of ligand-type on the f-f MCD fine structure features. Theoretical calculations were conducted to determine the Laporte forbidden f-f transitions and their MCD intensity experimentally observed in the NIR spectra of the U(v) hexahalide complexes, via the inclusion of vibronic coupling, to better understand the underlying spectral fine structure features for these complexes. These spectra and simulations provide an important platform for the application of MCD spectroscopy to this widely studied class of U(v) complexes and identify areas for continued theoretical development.

Abstract
The reactions of UO2(OAc)2·2H2O with benzil bis(isonicotinoyl hydrazone) ligand (H2L) in varied solvent media resulted in the formation of a series of new dioxouranium(vi) complexes 1-3 of the type UO2(L)(X), [where 1, X = DMF; 2, X = DMSO; 3, X = H2O]. The complexes were systematically characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Visible spectroscopy, TGA, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and powder X-ray diffraction study. Among all the complexes, 1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. It was found that 1 preferred a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, in which an equatorial coordination plane was formed by the ONNO-tetradentate cavity of the deprotonated hydrazone ligand along with an additional oxygen atom of the coordinated solvent molecule. Thermal analysis suggested that complexes 1 and 3 undergo weight loss in the temperature range 180-210 °C and 100-120 °C, respectively, due to the ready release of their coordinated solvent molecules. Complexes 1-3 exhibited analogous UV-Visible absorption bands and the intense band between 300-600 nm was assigned to the M ← L and n → π* transitions. Weakly resolved reduction waves assigned to {UO2}2+/{UO2}+ couple were observed for complexes 1 and 2 {1, -1.76 V; 2, -1.75 V; vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene (Fc+/Fc)} in DMSO solution, signifying the feeble electron-donating nature of the L2- ligand. Powder X-ray diffraction study suggested that the crystallite size of all the complexes was in the nanoscale range. Further analysis using density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided structural insights as well as information on the electronic properties of both complex 1 and the ligand.

Abstract
Computational methods have been applied to understand the reduction potentials of [UO2 -salmnt-L] complexes (L=pyridine, DMSO, DMF and TPPO), and their redox behavior is compared with previous experiments in dichloromethane solution. Since the experimental results were inconclusive regarding the influence of the uranyl-bound tetra-dentate 'salmnt' ligand, here we will show that salmnt acts as a redox-active ligand and exhibits non-innocent behavior to interfere with the otherwise expected one-electron metal (U) reduction. We have employed two approaches to determine the uranyl (VI/V) reduction potentials, using a direct study of one-electron reduction processes and an estimation of the overall reduction using isodesmic reactions. Hybrid density functional theory (DFT) methods were combined with the Conductor-like Polarizable Continuum Model (CPCM) to account for solvation effects. The computationally predicted one-electron reduction potentials for the range of [UO2 -salmnt-L] complexes are in excellent agreement with shoulder peaks (∼1.4 eV) observed in the cyclic voltammetry experiments and clearly correlate with ligand reduction. Highly conjugated pi-bonds stabilize the ligand based delocalized orbital relative to the localized U f-orbitals, and as a consequence, the ligand traps the incoming electron. A second reduction step results in metal U(VI) to U(V) reduction, in good agreement with the experimentally assigned uranyl (VI/V) reduction potentials.

Abstract
A series of uranyl compounds with the redox-active iminoquinone ligand have been synthesized, and their electronic structures elucidated using multinuclear NMR, EPR, electronic absorption spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and X-ray crystallography. Characterization and analysis of the iminoquinone (iq0) complex, (dippiq)UO2(OTf)2THF (1-iq), the iminosemiquinone (isq1-) complex, (dippisq)2UO2THF (2-isq), and the amidophenolate (ap2-) complex, [(dippap)2UO2THF][K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]2(3-ap crown) show that reduction events are ligand-based, with the uranium center remaining in the hexavalent state. Reactivity of 2-isq with B-chlorocatecholborane or pivaloyl chloride leads to U-Ouranyl bond scission and reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) concomitant with ligand oxidation along with organic byproducts. 18O isotopic labeling experiments along with IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy confirm that the organic byproducts contain oxygen atoms which originate from U-Ouranyl bond activation.

Abstract
A series of octahedral CoIII salen complexes (where salen represents a N2O2 bis-Schiff-base bis-phenolate framework) were prepared with axial imidazole ligating groups. When using 1-methylimidazole (1-MeIm) axial ligands, the CoIII/CoII reduction potential could be altered by 220 mV via variation of the electron-donating ability of the para-ring substituents (R = H (1), OMe (2), tBu (3), Br (4), NO2 (5), and CF3 (6)). In addition, the irreversibility of the reduction process suggested substantial geometrical changes and axial ligand exchange upon reduction to the more labile CoII oxidation state. Installing an imidazole-coumarin conjugate as the axial ligands resulted in fluorescence quenching when bound to the CoIII centre (R = H (7), OMe (8), and CF3 (9)). The redox properties and fluorescence increase upon ligand release for 7–9 were studied under reducing conditions and in the presence of excess competing ligand (1-MeIm). It was determined that the Lewis acidity of the CoIII centre was the dominant factor in controlling axial ligand exchange for this series of complexes.

Abstract
Multinuclear (1H and 13C) NMR, and Raman spectroscopy, combined with DFT calculations, provide detailed information on the complexation between U(vi) oxoions and 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonate (8-HQS) in aqueous solution. Over the concentration region studied, U(vi) oxoions (uranyl ions) form one dominant complex with 8-HQS in water in the pH range 3-6, a mononuclear 1 : 2 (metal : ligand) complex, with the metal centre (UO22+) coordinated to two 8-HQS ligands, together with one or more water molecules. An additional minor 1 : 1 complex has also been detected for solutions with a 1 : 1 metal : ligand molar ratio. The geometry of the dominant complex is proposed based on the combination of the NMR and Raman results with DFT calculations. Further information on the electronic structure of the complex has been obtained from UV/visible absorption and luminescence spectra. The complex of U(vi) and 8-HQS is non-luminescent, in contrast to what has been observed with this ligand and many other metal ions. We suggest that this is due to the presence of low-lying ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) states below the emitting ligand-based and uranyl-based levels which quench their emission. These studies have fundamental importance and are also relevant in the context of environmental studies, and the water soluble ligand 8-HQS has been chosen for application in uranium remediation of aqueous environments.

Abstract
Investigation into the reactivity of reduced uranium species toward diazenes has revealed key intermediates in the four-electron cleavage of azobenzene. Trivalent Tp*2U(CH2Ph) (1a) (Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) and Tp*2U(2,2'-bpy) (1b) both perform the two-electron reduction of diazenes affording η2-hydrazido complexes Tp*2U(AzBz) (2-AzBz) (AzBz = azobenzene) and Tp*2U(BCC) (2-BCC) (BCC = benzo[c]cinnoline) in contrast to precursors of the bis(Cp*) (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienide) ligand framework. The four-electron cleavage of diazenes to give trans-bis(imido) species was possible by using Cp*U(MesPDIMe)(THF) (3) (MesPDIMe = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)2-C5H3N, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), which is supported by a highly reduced trianionic chelate that undergoes electron transfer. This proceeds via concerted addition at a single uranium center supported by both a crossover experiment and through addition of an asymmetrically substituted diazene, Ph-N═N-Tol. Further investigation of 3 and its substituted analogue, Cp*U(tBu-MesPDIMe)(THF) (3-tBu) (tBu-MesPDIMe = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)2-p-C(CH3)3-C5H2N), with benzo[c]cinnoline, revealed that the four-electron cleavage occurs first by a single electron reduction of the diazene with the redox chemistry performed solely at the redox-active pyridine(diimine) to form dimeric [Cp*U(BCC)(MesHPDIMe)]2 (5) and Cp*U(BCC)(tBu-MesPDIMe) (6). While a transient pyridine(diimine) triplet diradical in the formation of 5 results in H atom abstraction and p-pyridine coupling, the tert-butyl moiety in 6 allows for electronic rearrangement to occur, precluding deleterious pyridine-radical coupling. The monomeric analogue of 5, Cp*U(BCC)(MesPDIMe) (7), was synthesized via salt metathesis from Cp*UI(MesPDIMe) (3-I). All complexes have been characterized by 1H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and, where pertinent, EPR spectroscopy. Further, the electronic structures of 3-I, 5, and 7 have been investigated by SQUID magnetometry.

Abstract
Arylazide and diazene activation by highly reduced uranium(IV) complexes bearing trianionic redox-active pyridine(diimine) ligands, [CpPU(MesPDIMe)]2 (1-CpP), Cp*U(MesPDIMe)(THF) (1-Cp*) (CpP = 1-(7,7-dimethylbenzyl)cyclopentadienide; Cp* = η5-1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienide), and Cp*U(tBu-MesPDIMe) (THF) (1-tBu) (2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)2-p-R-C5H2N, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl; R = H, MesPDIMe; R = C(CH3)3, tBu-MesPDIMe), has been investigated. While 1-Cp* and 1-CpP readily reduce N3R (R = Ph, p-tolyl) to form trans-bis(imido) species, CpPU(NAr)2(MesPDIMe) (Ar = Ph, 2-CpP; Ar = p-Tol, 3-CpP) and Cp*U(NPh)2(MesPDIMe) (2-Cp*), only 1-Cp* can cleave diazene N═N double bonds to form the same product. Complexes 2-Cp*, 2-CpP, and 3-CpP are uranium(V) trans-bis(imido) species supported by neutral [MesPDIMe]0 ligands formed by complete oxidation of [MesPDIMe]3- ligands of 1-CpP and 1-Cp*. Variation of the arylimido substituent in 2-Cp* from phenyl to p-tolyl, forming Cp*U(NTol)2(MesPDIMe) (3-Cp*), changes the electronic structure, generating a uranium(VI) ion with a monoanionic pyridine(diimine) radical. The tert-butyl-substituted analogue, Cp*U(NTol)2(tBu-MesPDIMe) (3-tBu), displays the same electronic structure. Oxidation of the ligand radical in 3-Cp* and 3-tBu by Ag(I) forms cationic uranium(VI) [Cp*U(NTol)2(MesPDIMe)][SbF6] (4-Cp*) and [Cp*U(NTol)2(tBu-MesPDIMe)][SbF6] (4-tBu), respectively, as confirmed by metrical parameters. Conversely, oxidation of pentavalent 2-Cp* with AgSbF6 affords cationic [Cp*U(NPh)2(MesPDIMe)][SbF6] (5-Cp*) from a metal-based U(V)/U(VI) oxidation. All complexes have been characterized by multidimensional NMR spectroscopy with assignments confirmed by electronic absorption spectroscopy. The effective nuclear charge at uranium has been probed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, while structural parameters of 1-CpP, 3-Cp*, 3-tBu, 4-Cp*, 4-tBu, and 5-Cp* have been elucidated by X-ray crystallography.
