High-Resolution 17O Solid-State NMR as a Unique Probe for Investigating Oxalate Binding Modes in Materials: The Case Study of Calcium Oxalate Biominerals

Oxalate ligands are found in many classes of materials, including energy storage materials and biominerals. Determining their local environments at the atomic scale is thus paramount to establishing the structure and properties of numerous phases. Here, we show that high-resolution 17O solid-state NMR is a valuable asset for investigating the structure of crystalline oxalate systems. First, an efficient 17O-enrichment procedure of oxalate ligands is demonstrated using mechanochemistry. Then, 17O-enriched oxalates were used for the synthesis of the biologically relevant calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) phase, enabling the analysis of its structure and heat-induced phase transitions by high-resolution 17O NMR. Studies of the low-temperature COM form (LT-COM), using magnetic fields from 9.4 to 35.2 T, as well as 13C-17O MQ/D-RINEPT and 17O{1H} MQ/REDOR experiments, enabled the 8 inequivalent oxygen sites of the oxalates to be resolved, and tentatively assigned. The structural changes upon heat treatment of COM were also followed by high-resolution 17O NMR, providing new insight into the structures of the high-temperature form (HT-COM) and anhydrous calcium oxalate α-phase (α-COA), including the presence of structural disorder in the latter case. Overall, this work highlights the ease associated with 17O-enrichment of oxalate oxygens, and how it enables high-resolution solid-state NMR, for "NMR crystallography" investigations.

Blue-Emitting Ligand-Mediated Assembly of Rare-Earth MOFs toward White-Light Emission, Sensing, Magnetic, and Catalytic Studies

New lanthanide carboxylate compounds with two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) structures have been prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as an organic linker. The compounds, [Ln(C₁₄H₈O₆)(C₇O₃H₄)·2H₂O]·4(H₂O), Ln = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and [Ln(C₇O₃H₄)₃·(C₃H₇ON)·(H₂O)]·2(H₂O)(C₃H₇NO), Ln = La, Ce, Pr, have two- and three-dimensional structures, respectively. In all compounds, lanthanide ions are connected together, forming a dimer, which is connected by the 2,5-BPTA ligand. In the two-dimensional structure, there are two 2,5-BPTA moieties present, and in the three-dimensional structure, there are three 2,5-BPTA moieties present. The lanthanide centers are nine-coordinated, the 2D structure has a tricapped trigonal prismatic arrangement, and the 3D structure has a monocapped distorted square antiprismatic arrangement. The Pr compound forms in both 2D and 3D structures, whose formation depends on the time of the reaction (2 days─2D and 5-6 days─3D). The ligand emits in the blue region, and using the characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ (red) and Tb³⁺ (green) ions, we achieve white light emission in the (Y_0.96Tb_0.02Eu_0.02) compound. The overall quantum yield for the white light emission is 28%. The strong green luminescence of the Tb³⁺-containing compound was employed to selectively sense the Cr³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions in aqueous solution with limits of detection (LODs) at 0.41 and 8.6 ppm, respectively. The Tb compound was found to be a good heterogeneous catalyst for the Ullman-type O-arylation reaction between phenol and bromoarene with yields of 95%. Magnetic studies on the Gd-, Tb-, and Dy-containing compounds showed weak exchange interactions within the dimeric Ln₂ units. The present work demonstrates the many utilities of the rare-earth-containing MOFs, especially toward white-light emission, metal-ion sensing, and heterogeneous catalysis.

Magnetic cooling: a molecular perspective

The magnetocaloriceffect is considered as an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technique which can take cooling technology to the next level. Apart from its commercial application at room temperature, magnetic refrigeration is an up-and-coming solution for the cryogenic regime, especially as an alternative to He³ systems. Molecular magnets reveal advantageous features for ultra-low cooling which are competitive with intermetallic and lanthanide alloys. Here, we present a guide to the current status of magnetocaloric effect research of molecular magnets with a theoretical background focused on the inverse magnetocaloric effect and an overview of recent results and developments, including the rotating magnetocaloric effect.

Four series of lanthanide coordination polymers based on the tetrabromobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate ligand: structural diversity and multifunctional properties

Four series of lanthanide-based coordination polymers (LnCPs), namely [Ln(Br₄bdc)_1.5(MeOH)₃] (1Ln; Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy), [Ln₂(Br₄bdc)₂(NO₃)₂(MeOH)₄] (2Ln; Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm), [Ln(Br₄bdc)(NO₃)(MeOH)] (3Ln; Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy), and [Ln₂(Br₄bdc)₃(H₂O)_2.3(MeOH)_2.7] (4Ln; Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) have been synthesized by reacting hydrated lanthanide(III) salts with tetrabromobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H₂Br₄bdc) in different solvents under solvothermal conditions. The structural diversity found in the system mainly resulted from the effects of anions, solvents, and the variation in the ionic radii of the lanthanide(III) ions. Compounds in series 1Ln feature a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure with sql topology based on {(Ln(COO)₂)₂(μ-COO)₂} secondary building units (SBUs). Compounds in series 2Ln and 3Ln comprise, respectively, infinite uniform and alternate chains of {Ln(COO)₂}_n SBUs that are assembled into a similar network topology to 1Ln. Meanwhile, compounds in series 4Ln feature 3D coordination networks of a pcu α-Po topological net consisting of binuclear {Ln₂(COO)₃} SBUs. The formation of polymeric networks in series 1Ln-4Ln is facilitated by the numerous coordination sites of the ligand Br₄bdc^2- and the fact that its bromine atoms can participate in the formation of various types of intermolecular interactions. The solid-state photoluminescence studies on Eu- (1Eu) and Tb- (1Tb, 3Tb, 4Tb) containing compounds indicate that the Br₄bdc^2- ligands can efficiently sensitize Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ emission. Notably, such compounds exhibit highly sensitive fluorescence sensing for acetone, water, and Fe³⁺ ions via the fluorescence quenching effect. As the representatives of the series, activated 1Eu, 2Pr, 3Tb, and 4Tb show the maximum CO₂ uptake capacities of 170.4, 273.7, 255.3, and 303.5 cm³ g^-1, respectively, at 50 bar and 298 K with good repeatability of the adsorption-desorption properties. Magnetic studies indicate that the Gd- and Dy-based compounds 1Gd, 1Dy, 3Gd, 3Dy, and 4Gd show simple paramagnetic behaviours, whereas compound 4Dy exhibits weak ferromagnetic interactions.

Insights into the Effect of Trans-to-Cis Photoisomerization of a Co-coordinated Stilbene Derivative on the Luminescence of Di-β-diketonate Lanthanide Complexes

Five lanthanide complexes constructed from a stilbene derivative, (E)-N',N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-4-styrylbenzoyl hydrazide (HL), and two β-diketonates (2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, tta), with or without a trifluoroacetate anion (CF₃CO₂ ^-), namely, [Ln(tta)₂(HL) (CF₃CO₂)] [LnC₄₅H₃₂F₉N₄O₇S₂, Ln = La (1), Nd (2), Eu (3), or Gd (4)] and [Yb(tta)₂(L)] (YbC₄₃H₃₁F₆N₄O₅S₂ (5), L = deprotonated HL), were synthesized and characterized. Crystals of these five complexes were obtained and analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes all belonged to the monoclinic P2₁/c space group. For La³⁺, Nd³⁺, Eu³⁺, and Gd³⁺, the central lanthanide ion was nine-coordinate with a monocapped twisted square antiprism polyhedron geometry. The central Yb³⁺ ion of complex 5 was eight-coordinate with a distorted double-capped triangular prism polyhedron geometry. Among the five complexes, trans-to-cis photoisomerization of the stilbene group in gadolinium complex 4 showed the largest quantum yield. Complexes 2, 3, and 4 showed dual luminescence and photoisomerization functions. The luminescence change of complex 3 was reversible upon the trans-to-cis photoisomerization process. The sensitization efficiencies of luminescent europium complex 3 in acetonitrile solutions and in the solid state were 49.9 and 42.6%, respectively. These medium sensitization efficiencies led to the observation of simultaneous photoisomerization and luminescence, which further confirmed our previous report that photoisomerization of the stilbene group within complexes was related to the lanthanide ion energy level and whether a ligand-to-metal center or ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer process was present. In complexes 1-5, in addition to the intramolecular absorption transition of the ligand itself (IL, π_HL-π_HL ^* and π_tta-π_tta*), the presence of a ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer transition between tta and HL (LLCT, π_tta-π_HL ^* or π_HL-π_tta ^*) indicated whether the triplet-state energy of HL was able to transfer to the excited energy level of the lanthanide ions, leading to different extents of HL photoisomerization. These results provide an important route for the design of new dual-function lanthanide-based optical switching materials.

The coordination chemistry of benzhydrazide with lanthanide(iii) ions: hydrothermal in situ ligand formation, structures, magnetic and photoluminescence sensing properties

The influence of synthetic conditions on the solid-state structural formation of lanthanide(iii) complexes based on a hydrazide ligand have been investigated and reported. Depending on the solvents and reaction temperatures, the reactions of hydrated Ln(NO₃)₃ with a benzohydrazide (bzz) ligand afforded three classes of lanthanide(iii) coordination complexes viz. [Ln(bzz)(NO₃)](NO₃)₂ (1Ln; Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5)), [Ln(bzz)(ben)₃(H₂O)]·H₂O (2Ln; Ln = Pr (6), Nd (7), Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Er (13)), and [Ln₃(ben)₃] (3Ln; Ln = Eu (14), Gd (15), Tb (16), Dy (17), Er (18), Tm (19), Yb (20), Lu (21)). Complexes 1-5 in series 1Ln were isolated by slow evaporation of their isopropanol solutions at ambient temperature, and the complexes display similar discrete structures bearing distinct intermolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds to generate a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture. Complexes 6-13 in series 2Ln were obtained under hydrothermal conditions at 110 °C where the in situ generated benzoate (ben) ligands participated in the formation of one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) with the bzz ligands. At a temperature of 145 °C the hydrothermal conditions result in the formation of the thermodynamically more stable products of 14-21 in series 3Ln, in which the bzz ligand underwent complete in situ hydrolysis to create the ben ligand. These coordination assemblies feature 1D zigzag chains that are formed by unusual low coordination numbers of the six- and seven-fold coordinated Ln³⁺ centers bridged by the ben ligands in μ ₂- and μ ₃-coordination modes. Notably, the chain structures of 2Ln can be transformed into the zigzag tape-like structures of 3Ln upon heating the crystalline samples to 400 °C in air. In the solid state at room temperature, the Eu- (2, 9, 14) and Tb- (4, 11, 16) containing complexes emit red and green light, respectively. The luminescence investigations show that the Eu- (9, 14) and Tb-(11, 16) based CPs could be used as fluorescent probes for acetone and Co²⁺ ions via an energy competition mechanism. Meanwhile, the Gd- (10, 15) and Dy- (12, 17) based CPs show typical antiferromagnetic interactions.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation and magnetocaloric effects in an oxalato-bridged gadolinium(iii)-based 2D MOF

The coexistence of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation and moderately large magnetocaloric efficiency in the supra-Kelvin temperature region occurs in the 2D compound [Gd(ox)₃(H₂O)₆]_n·4nH₂O (1), a feature that can be exploited in the proof-of-concept design of a new class of slow-relaxing magnetic materials for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.

Remarkable Energy Barrier for Magnetization Reversal in 3D and 2D Dysprosium-Chloranilate-Based Coordination Polymers

Herein, two coordination polymers (CPs) [{Dy(Cl₂ An)_1.5 (CH₃ OH)}⋅4.5 H₂ O]_n (1) and [Dy(Cl₂ An)_1.5 (DMF)₂ ]_n (2), in which Cl₂ An is chloranilate (2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone dianion), exhibiting field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior with moderate barrier of magnetization reversal are reported. Detailed structural and topological analysis disclosed that 1 has a 3D network, whereas 2 has a 2D layered-type structure. In both CPs, magnetic measurements showed weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the dysprosium centers and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with barriers of 175(9)K and 145(7)K for 1 and 2, respectively. Notably, the energy barriers of magnetization reversal of 1 and 2 are remarkable for metal-chloranilate-based 3D (1) and 2D (2) CPs. The temperature and field dependence of relaxation time indicate the presence of multiple relaxation pathways, such as direct, quantum tunneling of magnetization, Raman, and Orbach processes, in both CPs. Ab initio theoretical calculations reinforced the experimentally observed higher energy barrier in 1 as compared with 2 due to the presence of large transverse anisotropy in the ground state in the latter. The average transition magnetic moment between the computed low-lying spin-orbit states also rationalized the relaxation as Orbach and Raman processes through the first excited state. BS-DFT calculations were carried out for both CPs to provide more insight into the exchange interaction.

Rare-earth metal–organic frameworks: from structure to applications

In the past 30 years, rare-earth metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been gaining attention owing to their diverse chemical structures, and tunable properties.

Water-stable LnIII-based coordination polymers displaying slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence sensing properties

Six Ln-CPs were synthesized: Dy-CP shows slow magnetic relaxation, and Eu-CP and Tb-CP exhibit recyclable and multi-responsive sensing for Fe³⁺, MnO₄⁻, Cr^VI-anions (CrO₄²⁻, Cr₂O₇²⁻) and TNP in an aqueous system.

Cu(II) MOFs Based on Bipyridyls: Topology, Magnetism, and Exploring Sensing Ability toward Multiple Nitroaromatic Explosives

In this work, a series of three copper(II) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cu(4,4'-DP)Cl] n (1), [Cu(4,4'-DP)0.5Cl] n (2), and [Cu(4,4'-TMDP)Cl] n (3) (4,4'-DP = 4,4'-dipyridyl, 4,4'-TMDP = 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridyl), is designed and synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Crystallographic investigations reveal that 1 and 2 have tetrahedral and 3 has octahedral environment around the Cu(II) ion. By varying the solvent conditions and ligand derivatives, the topology can be interestingly tuned. TOPOS Pro provides topological conclusions that 1 is stabilized by unusual 2D + 2D → 3D polycatenation of layers lying in (110) and (11̅0) planes with dihedral angle of 90° showing altogether fes , hcb , and sql topologies. On the other hand, 2 exhibits a bey (3,4-c net) topology and 3 shows 4-fold interpenetration with the dia topology. The dc measurements for 1-3 performed on polycrystalline samples in a 0.1 T field confirm strong ferromagnetic behaviors for 1 and 2 and moderate antiferromagnetic behavior for 3. To examine the sensing properties of the three MOFs, various hazardous nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) were used as analytes. While 1 is a potent fluorescence sensor for highly sensitive detection of multiple NACs, 2 selectively detects meta-dinitrobenzene (m-DNB) with K SV = 5.73 × 105 M-1 and a remarkably lower limit of detection (LOD) value of 1.23 × 10-7 M. 3 does not show sensing ability toward any NAC probably due to the coordination environment being different from those in 1 and 2. The work demonstrates fine-tuning of the topology and in turn magnetic and sensing properties by changing the reaction conditions.

Tunable Ferromagnetic Strength in Niccolite Structural Heterometallic Formate Framework Based on Orthogonal Magnetic Orbital Interactions

A series of heterometallic formate framework templated by amines were solvothermally prepared. They feature the formula of [A^I][CrM^II(HCO₂)₆] (A^I = NH₄H₂O^I and M = Mn for 1, A^I = CH₃NH₃^I and M = Fe for 2, A^I = CH₃NH₂CH₃^I and M = Co for 3, A^I = CH₃NH₃^I and M = Ni for 4). The title compounds exhibit isostructural niccolite architectures with differences only in the host metal ions and guest amines. Tunable ferromagnetic (FO) strength was realized in the resulting framework under the guidance of orthogonal magnetic orbital analysis of Cr^III (t_2g³e_g) and M^II (t_2g³e_g² for Mn^II, t_2g⁴e_g² for Fe^II, t_2g⁵e_g² for Co^II, t_2g⁶e_g² for Ni^II) ions. The magnetic ordering temperatures derived from the experimental magnetic measurements for 1-4 are lower than 2, 10.3, 7.6, and 22.0 K, respectively. Notably, thanks to the weak FO coupling between Cr^III and Mn^II ions, compound 1 displays a large magnetocaloric effect bearing the maximum of magnetic entropy change (-Δ S_m^max) up to 43.9 J kg^-1 K^-1 with Δ H = 7 T and T = 3.5 K, larger than most reported transition metal-based complexes and commercial gadolinium gallium garnet (Gd₃Ga₅O₁₂) (-Δ S_m^max = 38.4 J kg^-1 K^-1 with Δ H = 7 T). From 1, 2/3, to 4, an enhancement of the magnetic ordering temperature is observable due to the increasing strength of FO interactions between Cr^III and M^II ions. Our work provides a successful instance to modulate the strength of FO exchange via analyzing the orthogonal magnetic orbitals of heterometallic ions.

A combined experimental and theoretical approach to investigate the structure, magnetic properties and DNA binding affinity of a homodinuclear Cu(ii) complex

A dicopper(ii) complex of a flexible amino alcohol anchored with an acetate auxiliary was designed and characterized by spectral, X-ray crystallographic, magnetic and DFT studies; moreover, it was evaluated for its DNA binding properties. The experimental results are supported by theoretical analyses.

A new approach to fabricate the Mn(ii)-based magnetic refrigerant through incorporation of a diamagnetic {LiO4} spacer

A new 3D MOF [MnLi₂(ip)₂(H₂O)₂] (1) with a 1D heterometallic inorganic Mn(ii)-Li(i) chain is reported. With the assistance of diamagnetic {LiO₄} connectors, which separate the paramagnetic Mn(ii) ions and act as magnetic spacers, very weak magnetic interactions were obtained. Remarkably, 1 showed a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE) with a large entropy change value of 30.4 J kg^-1 K^-1 for ΔH = 8 T at 2 K.

Isostructural lanthanide-based metal–organic frameworks: structure, photoluminescence and magnetic properties

Highly stable 3D Ln-MOFs were constructed. The Eu-MOF shows good luminescence properties while the Dy-MOF shows a typical single-molecule magnetic behavior with a slow relaxation of magnetization.

Rare earth phosphors based on spherical infinite coordination polymers

New spherical lanthanide infinite coordination polymer (ICP)-based phosphors were obtained and show great potential for light-emitting applications.

The investigation of an organic acid assisted sol–gel method for preparing monolithic zirconia aerogels

In our previous work, a citric acid assisted sol–gel method was developed for preparing monolithic metal oxide aerogels. Such method adopted citric acid as the gelator, which replaced the well-studied proton scavenger propylene oxide. In this work, we have further extended this “organic acid assisted” sol–gel method and investigated the gelation mechanism. Four different organic acids (butanedioic acid, l-malic acid, l-aspartic acid and mercaptosuccinic acid) with an identical main chain but different side groups were used as the gelators for preparing monolithic zirconia aerogels. It was found that complex interactions including covalent bond and coordination bond interactions between organic acids and zirconium ions were vital to give a rigid gel network. After supercritical drying, crystalline zirconia aerogels can be obtained with high surface areas over 330 m² g⁻¹ and large pore volumes over 3.574 cm³ g⁻¹.

The mechanism of the organic acid assisted sol–gel method free of propylene oxide for preparing monolithic zirconia aerogels was investigated in detail.

Two hybrid lanthanide complexes exhibiting a large magnetocaloric effect and slow magnetic relaxation

Two isostructural lanthanide (Ln) hybrid complexes co-bridged by organic oxalate and inorganic hypophosphite, [Ln(oxa)(H₂PO₂)(H₂O)₂] (oxa = oxalate; Ln = Gd (1), Dy (2)), were solvothermally prepared with the goal of elucidating the role of a hybrid framework in the generation of novel molecular magnetic materials. The title compounds feature a two dimensional (2D) hybrid layer. The Ln^III ions are octa-coordinated with distorted square antiprism geometry. The adjacent Ln^III ions are co-bridged by hypophosphite and one type of oxalate ligand to form 1D hybrid chains, which are further linked by a second type of oxalate ligand to generate the resulting 2D framework. Magnetic investigations reveal that compound 1 features a large magnetocaloric effect with -ΔS = 46.60 J kg^-1 K^-1 (134.39 mJ cm^-3 K^-1), due to the combined advantages of organic oxalate and inorganic hypophosphite ligands, while compound 2 displays slow magnetic relaxation.
