Preparations, Properties, and Applications of Polyaniline and Polyaniline Thin Films-A Review

Polyaniline (PANI) is a famous conductive polymer, and it has received tremendous consideration from researchers in the field of nanotechnology for the improvement of sensors, optoelectronic devices, and photonic devices. PANI is doped easily by different acids and dopants because of its easy synthesis and remarkable environmental stability. This review focuses on different preparation processes of PANI thin film by chemical and physical methods. Several features of PANI thin films, such as their magnetic, redox, and antioxidant, anti-corrosion, and electrical and sensing properties, are discussed in this review. PANI is a highly conductive polymer. Given its unique properties, easy synthesis, low cost, and high environmental stability in various applications such as electronics, drugs, and anti-corrosion materials, it has attracted extensive attention. The most important PANI applications are briefly reviewed at the end of this review.

Recent progress on nanostructured carbon-based counter/back electrodes for high-performance dye-sensitized and perovskite solar cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) favor minimal environmental impact and low processing costs, factors that have prompted intensive research and development. In both cases, rare, expensive, and less stable metals (Pt and Au) are used as counter/back electrodes; this design increases the overall fabrication cost of commercial DSSC and PSC devices. Therefore, significant attempts have been made to identify possible substitutes. Carbon-based materials seem to be a favorable candidate for DSSCs and PSCs due to their excellent catalytic ability, easy scalability, low cost, and long-term stability. However, different carbon materials, including carbon black, graphene, and carbon nanotubes, among others, have distinct properties, which have a significant role in device efficiency. Herein, we summarize the recent advancement of carbon-based materials and review their synthetic approaches, structure-function relationship, surface modification, heteroatoms/metal/metal oxide incorporation, fabrication process of counter/back electrodes, and their effects on photovoltaic efficiency, based on previous studies. Finally, we highlight the advantages, disadvantages, and design criteria of carbon materials and fabrication challenges that inspire researchers to find low cost, efficient and stable counter/back electrodes for DSSCs and PSCs.

High-performance dye-sensitized solar cells using Ag-doped CoS counter electrodes

Electrochemical synthesis of nanoporous tungsten carbide and its application as electrocatalysts for photoelectrochemical cells

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells are promising tools for renewable and sustainable solar energy conversion. Currently, their inadequate performance and high cost of the noble metals used in the electrocatalytic counter electrode have postponed the practical use of PEC cells. In this study, we report the electrochemical synthesis of nanoporous tungsten carbide and its application as a reduction catalyst in PEC cells, namely, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) and PEC water splitting cells, for the first time. The method employed in this study involves the anodization of tungsten foil followed by post heat treatment in a CO atmosphere to produce highly crystalline tungsten carbide film with an interconnected nanostructure. This exhibited high catalytic activity for the reduction of cobalt bipyridine species, which represent state-of-the-art redox couples for DSCs. The performance of tungsten carbide even surpassed that of Pt, and a substantial increase (∼25%) in energy conversion efficiency was achieved when Pt was substituted by tungsten carbide film as the counter electrode. In addition, tungsten carbide displayed decent activity as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, suggesting the high feasibility for its utilization as a cathode material for PEC water splitting cells, which was also verified in a two-electrode water photoelectrolyzer.
