Abstract
Nonadiabatic dynamics simulation has become a powerful tool to describe nonadiabatic effects involved in photophysical processes and photochemical reactions. In the past decade, our group has developed generalized trajectory-based ab initio surface-hopping (GTSH) dynamics simulation methods, which can be used to describe a series of nonadiabatic processes, such as internal conversion, intersystem crossing, excitation energy transfer and charge transfer of molecular systems, and photoinduced nonadiabatic carrier dynamics of extended systems with and without spin-orbit couplings. In this contribution, we will first give a brief introduction to our recently developed methods and related numerical implementations at different computational levels. Later, we will present some of our latest applications in realistic systems, which cover organic molecules, biological proteins, organometallic compounds, periodic organic and inorganic materials, etc. Final discussion is given to challenges and outlooks of ab initio nonadiabatic dynamics simulations.

Abstract
van der Waals heterojunctions formed by transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and fullerenes are promising candidates for novel photovoltaic devices due to the excellent optoelectronic properties of both TMDs and fullerenes. However, relevant experimental and theoretical investigations remain scarce to the best of our knowledge. Herein, we have first employed static density functional theory (DFT) calculations in combination with time-domain density functional theory (TDDFT) based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to rationally evaluate the photovoltaic performances of four TMD@fullerene heterostructures, i.e. WSe2@C60, WSe2@C70, MoTe2@C60 and MoTe2@C70, respectively. Our simulation results indicate that the C70-based heterostructures overall have better photoinduced electron transfer efficiencies than their C60-based counterparts, among which the performance of the WSe2@C70 heterostructure is the best and the electron transfer from WSe2 to C70 almost accomplishes within 1 ps. In addition, the large build-in potential of about 0.75 eV of WSe2@C70 is beneficial for the charge separation processes. Our present work not only selects the van der Waals TMD@fullerene heterojunctions that might have excellent photovoltaic properties, but also paves the way for the rational design of novel heterojunctions with better optoelectronic performances with DFT and TDDFT simulations in the future.

Abstract
Constructing a van der Waals heterostructure is a practical way to promote the conversion efficiency of solar energy. Here, we demonstrate the efficient performance of a GeSe/AsP heterostructure in solar energy cells based on the first-principles calculations. The electronic properties, optical absorption, and optoelectronic properties are calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the newly designed heterostructure. The results indicate that the GeSe/AsP heterostructure possesses a type-II band alignment with an indirect bandgap of 1.10 eV, which greatly promotes the effective separation of photogenerated carriers. Besides, an intrinsic electric field is formed in the direction from the AsP to GeSe monolayer, which is beneficial to prevent the recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pair. Simultaneously, a strong optical absorption is observed in the visible light range. The predicted power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the GeSe/AsP heterostructure is 16.0% and can be promoted to 17.3% by applying 1% biaxial compression strain. The present results indicate that the GeSe/AsP heterostructure is a promising candidate material for high-performance solar cells.

Abstract
Fullerene has a definite 0D closed-cage molecular structure composed of merely sp2-hybridized carbon atoms, enabling it to serve as an important building block that is useful for constructing supramolecular assemblies and micro/nanofunctional materials. Conversely, graphene has a 2D layered structure, possessing an exceptionally large specific surface area and high carrier mobility. Likewise, other emerging graphene-analogous 2D nanomaterials, such as graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and black phosphorus (BP), show unique electronic, physical, and chemical properties, which, however, exist only in the form of a monolayer and are typically anisotropic, limiting their applications. Upon hybridization with fullerenes, noncovalently or covalently, the physical/chemical properties of 2D nanomaterials can be tailored and, in most cases, improved, significantly extending their functionalities and applications. Here, an exhaustive review of all types of hybrids of fullerenes and 2D nanomaterials, such as graphene, g-C3N4, TMDs, h-BN, and BP, including their preparations, structures, properties, and applications, is presented. Finally, the prospects of fullerene-2D nanomaterial hybrids, especially the opportunity of creating unknown functional materials by means of hybridization, are envisioned.

Abstract
We show how gadolinium (Gd)-based metallofullerene (Gd3N@C80) molecules can be used to create single adatoms and nanoclusters on a graphene surface. An in situ heating holder within an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope is used to track the adhesion of endohedral metallofullerenes (MFs) to the surface of graphene, followed by Gd metal ejection and diffusion across the surface. Heating to 900 °C is used to promote adatom migration and metal nanocluster formation, enabling direct imaging of the assembly of nanoclusters of Gd. We show that hydrogen can be used to reduce the temperature of MF fragmentation and metal ejection, enabling Gd nanocluster formation on graphene surfaces at temperatures as low as 300 °C. The process of MF fragmentation and metal ejection is captured in situ and reveals that after metal release, the C80 cage opens further and fuses with the surface monolayer carbon glass on graphene, creating a highly stable carbon layer for further Gd adatom adhesion. Small voids and defects (∼1 nm) in the surface carbon glass act as trapping sites for Gd atoms, leading to atomic self-assembly of 2D monolayer Gd clusters. These results show that MFs can adhere to graphene surfaces at temperatures well above their bulk sublimation point, indicating that the surface bound MFs have strong adhesion to dangling bonds on graphene surfaces. The ability to create dispersed single Gd adatoms and Gd nanoclusters on graphene may have impact in spintronics and magnetism.

Abstract
Following the development of many novel two-dimensional (2D) materials, investigations of van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWHs) have attracted significant attention due to their excellent properties such as smooth heterointerface, highly gate-tunable bandgap, and ultrafast carrier transport. Benefits from the atom-scale thickness, physical and chemical properties and ease of manipulation of the heterojunctions formulated by weak vdW forces were demonstrated to indicate their outstanding potential in electronic and optoelectronic applications, including photodetection and energy harvesting, and the possibility of integrating them with the existing semiconductor technology for the next-generation electronic and sensing devices. In this review, we summarized the recent developments of vdWHs and emphasized their applications. Basically, we introduced the physical properties and some newly discovered phenomena in vdWHs. Then, we emphatically presented four classical vdWHs and some novel heterostructures formed by vdW forces. Based on their unique physical properties and structures, we highlighted the applications of vdWHs including in photodiodes, phototransistors, tunneling devices, and memory devices. Finally, we provided a conclusion on the recent advances in vdWHs and outlined our perspectives. We aim for this review to serve as a solid foundation in this field and to pave the way for future research on vdW-based materials and their heterostructures.

Abstract
The ability to strongly absorb light is central to solar energy conversion. We demonstrate here that the hybrid of monolayer ZrS2 and double-ring tubular B20 cluster exhibits dramatically enhanced light absorption in the entire visible spectrum. The unique near-gap electronic structure and large built-in potential at the interface will lead to the robust separation of photoexcited charge carriers in the hybrid. Interestingly, some Zr and S atoms, which are catalytically inert in isolated monolayer ZrS2, turn into catalytic active sites. The dramatically enhanced absorption in the entire visible light makes the ZrS2/B20 hybrid having great applications in photocatalysis or photodetection.
